Like you said, a donations option would be so much better but...........business is a bitch. I would rather them run ads so they can generate money that way, but then again ads can get annoying.... I figured donations really can run a site and if they combine donations with some ads, there ya go. What they could do is make it enticing to donate like most sites including TRSG do. Give donaters some extra stuff but don't charge the others.
