TITLE: Smile For You ARTIST: Sara Daniels WRITERS: Sara Daniels & Vara Gallo LENGTH: 4:08 GENRE: Rock, pop rock, heavy rock PRODUCER: Reza Vranitzky
"Smile For You" is the eleventh - and penultimate - track on Sara Daniels' debut album. The song talks about the events that happen over a three day period of Sara breaking up with her boyfriend, starting from Monday morning, and going until Wednesday. If the listener follows the theme of the album, it seems that most of the songs have been about awful or unhealthy relationships that Sara has been in, and that she is using this debut album to finally work out some of her emotions about them. The album has seen her through bad relationships that she's stayed in, and good relationships that she's ruined - but "Smile For You" is the only song about a bad relationship that Sara's been in that she's gotten out of in a healthy way. Rather than causing a scene over the break-up that ends in screaming and fighting, in this song, she talks about simply letting the person go, and smiling for them. Vara Gallo again helped in the writing of the song, with her focus more on music while Sara wrote the lyrics. The song seems to be a great combination of Vara's style and Sara's style, combining into one rock anthem for women in abusive relationships that want to get out of them.
The song starts out on Monday morning, when Sara first starts to think about breaking up with her boyfriend. Although it's not specifically said what the boyfriend has said that makes her change her mind about him, it's obviously something that insults Sara's sensibilities, because she describes it as seeing his "dark side." When she tries to get away from him, screaming, he simply smiles at her, seeming to enjoy the hurt that he's causing her. She tries to stay away from him, deciding that she's never going to see him again, but he starts crying and emotionally blackmailing her to get her to come back. Tuesday morning, she does, and he does something else that's awful. Again, he simply smiles at her, seeming to enjoy it again. In the chorus, Sara tells him that she thought she needed dysfunction in her life, and that's why she stayed with him, but now he's got her wrapped around his finger and she's almost afraid to leave him. But she promises him that this is the end of them, and that it was his smile that pushed her over the edge. She tells him that today, she's going to smile for him as she lets him go, enjoying being free and enjoying that she'll never have to deal with his evil smile again. It's a very adult reaction to the breakup - she doesn't want to fight or scream at him anymore, she's just going to smile at him as she walks away. She's smiles for him, of course, but she also smiles for herself, knowing that this was the right decision to make.
We go back to Wednesday, where Sara is still debating on whether or not to leave her boyfriend. She follows the "charade" that he wants to keep up with them being a happy couple, allowing him to kiss her because she's too afraid to not. Again, he knows that she's too afraid of him to leave him at this point, so he smiles at her again. The chorus starts again, this time with Sara prefacing that she was so confused by her love for her boyfriend that she truly thought that a guy like him is what she thought she needed in her life. After the chorus, in the bridge, she explains how the relationship got so bad, saying that the love that her boyfriend had for her went from "caring" to "obsession," which eventually turned into him being very possessive over her. She explains to him that she feels like he can't help treating her like this, but that she couldn't fake being happy with him anymore, and that's why she's leaving. His smile that he always flashed to her when she was upset was too much for her to bear, and she never wants to be with him again. The chorus repeats again, and ends finally with Sara tells him that she's letting him go. Monday morning, I can't breathe I saw your dark side And all that's underneath I screamed and cried and tried to run You smiled at me
And when I tried to stay away You called me crying on the very next day By Tuesday morning, damage done You smiled at me
Dysfunction is what I thought I needed I'm wrapped around your finger (I'm wrapped around your finger) But it's the end of you and me Your shining teeth is what makes this hurts
But today I will, I will, I will Smile for you Woah, oh, woah Oh, oh, and let you go I will, I will, I will Smile for you Woah, oh, woah I have to let you go
I followed through the charade You pressed your lips against mine I'm too afraid Wednesday morning, cannot run You smiled at me
I was so confused that dysfunction is what I thought I needed I'm wrapped around your finger (I'm wrapped around your finger) But it's the end of you and me Your shining teeth is what makes this hurts, hurts, hurts, hurts!
But today I will, I will, I will Smile for you Woah, oh, woah Oh, oh, and let you go I will, I will, I will Smile for you Woah, oh, woah I have to let you go
Your love went from "caring" to "obsession" We can't help it, we can't help it Then you thought of me as your possession We can't fake it, we can't fake it Toothy grin, toothy grin, got under my skin Toothy grin, toothy grin, fuck, never again
But today I will, I will, I will Smile for you Woah, oh, woah Oh, oh, and let you go I will, I will, I will Smile for you Woah, oh, woah I have to let you go
We can't help it Oh, oh, and let you go I will, will, I will Smile for you We can't fake it I have to let you goSOUNDS LIKE: Digital Daggers - Out of My Head
