anyway. so if enough people are interested.. whats the first book we should try and read? I put a vote in for Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea." I have never read it but always wanted to. I have a copy somewhere and havent read it, so yeah that would be great. |

Books rock, particularly ones relating to war like the ones written by Stephen Ambrose. Currently reading 'Band of Brothers' for the millionth time, give or take a few thousand...I never get sick of it, it's such a fascinating read. |

best war book i know is all quiet on the western front by Erich Maria Remarque. which is in essence a book about a pair of boots. |

I'm always reading so I'd be definitely up for this...have just recently finished reading "My Name Is Red" by Orhan Pamuk. Originally a Turkish book translated into English, the narrative style is epic...it's always first person, but every chapter is from the perspective of a different person, animal, or inanimate object. I would reccomend reading JM Coetzee's "Disgrace", as well, that is possibly the best book I've ever read, properly well written. |

I agree, it's not about a generation of young men maimed, killed, mentally destroyed by war...it's about getting a decent pair of boots. |

I love to read, but I guess it'd be hard for me to find some of the books over here. I'm reading mostly school books at the moment, right now it's A Cidade e as Serras from the Portuguese author Eça de Queirós. I do love his books. |
I own:
Andrew Guinnard (Post-punk/acoustic) Lucy Tankeray (Pop diva/weird) |

Among the best books on war I've read (as a history buff) is The Second World War by John Keegan, and The Battle For Spain by Antony Beevor. You can probably guess what conflicts those are about. |

i really liked antony beevors book on the spanish civil war. I found it both convlusive and enlightening. John Keegan i haven't read though.
the best history wise book i think i have read is the Iron Kingdom by Christopher Clark, which is about the history of Prussia from 1600 to 1947. Or Napoleon Bonaparte: A Life by Alan Schom. |

My Name is Red is a hard slog first time through to be honest, so maybe do that one later. I'd be up for Hemmingway though if that's what the consensus is. |
