ROLLING STONE REVIEW NIGHT RIDER TOUR
Just over half an hour late on stage, the screams from a stadium full of GirlSpice fans gave the indication that no love was lost once the lights went down.
After the wait, GirlSpice finally made their big entrance in lace bodysuits with black platform boots whilst straddling motorbikes and dancing over them for opening song on the setlist, "Morning Won't Come". It was certainly far from a sight for sore eyes and we all know many girls have dragged their boyfriend to a GirlSpice concert at least once, so there must have been a few men in the house with no regrets on coming to see the show. A troop of soldiers marched around on stage after the performance for a quick interlude break whilst the girls had their first of many costume changes of the night, soon back on and seen on a tank whilst wearing army-styled crop tops and shorts for "Drop the Bomb", a past GirlSpice hit that features Thunderwolf. The soldiers continued to march around the tank as GirlSpice flaunted their flawless dance abilities with a routine; it's enough to sing live and dance at the same time, but to do it in heels as well is obviously a skill that they've all perfected over the years. Fan favourite "Xplode" followed, originally featuring Aerospliff, GirlSpice jumped down from the tank as the soldiers attempted to capture them throughout the performance, soon grabbing them by the end of the song and carrying them off stage over their shoulders.
Taking another costume change, all of GirlSpice reappeared locked in a metal cage that lifted from under the stage, sporting black and white striped leotards and black latex stockings with white heels. They climbed around the cages throughout "I Don't Need You" and escaped for new single "Danger", whilst dancing with a group of dancers under a shower of sparks. Ripped tights, leather jackets and jean shorts were their next look for a performance of "The Night", as they all appeared on four elevated platforms, whilst a giant heart prop stood upright on the stage below them as it lit on fire for the final chorus of the song. Furious strobe lights surrounded the stadium for "Hallucination", the girls threw kimonos on for the Japanese-inspired performance, downtown Japan footage appeared on the video screens and a dozen samurais fought and threw swords at each other, skillfully catching them each time as GirlSpice stood boldly in the middle of it all. It's a brave, daring and visually appealling performance and made for one of the highlights of the night, except if you're epileptic of course, then the frantic strobe lights would be your worst enemy.
GirlSpice's show seems to be a fashion show as much as it is an actual music concert, is this a good thing? We'll leave that to the fans to decide who have to get used to the group continuously leaving the stage for their next costume change. Arriving back in white tank tops, sequin black shorts, fingerless gloves and thigh-high boots for "Downtown", they rode around the stage in a roofless red Lexus car which mysteriously drove itself as they danced around at the back of the car with some dancers, it's a fun and easy-going performance which manages to keep the energy going. The anthemic sounding "Sleep with Your Sins" which is produced by and originally features Aftershock became another highlight of the night as the girls flew above the crowd on wires, before being brought back to the stage and singing under rainfall, generated by a machine of course; another one of the many visually stunning moments in the show, aside from GirlSpice themselves. Going for a more classic workout look in pink hoodies, black spandex leggings and leg warmers, they then put on an 80s inspired medley of hits "Control" and "Energetic" as they performed a workout dance with their dancers, before beginning to jump a giant rope for a breakdown in the medley, which most definitely got the crowd roaring. Of course, their vocals suffered from being short-breathed and weak afterwards, but it still became another show highlight.
Taking it down a notch later in the show, they made their way through "Burning Bridges", "Tomorrow's a Better Day" and an acoustic version of hit single "Endless Tears". It's a more relaxed moment in the show and was a chance for the girls to get their breath back after several high-energy performances, finally getting the moment to showcase their vocal talent which may often be overlooked. Their vocals probably would have been better on the ballads at the start of the show before all of the demanding dancing, but they still managed to give an impressive performance as they stood at their microphone stands and smiled out to the crowd, their genuine love for performing is still as present as ever after all of the personal and career highs and lows. But what may be one of the best moments in the show was their two covers of "Happiness Is Something You Need" by PANIC! and "Another Face in the Crowd" by Alicia Lena, the girls introduced the two as their favourite songs at the moment. They sat at the edge of part of their spectacularly huge stage and reached out to fans, holding their microphone out to get them to sing along, no gimmicks were present, and both performances were kept entirely stripped back, something much needed after all of the intense lighting and pyro.
Ending the show inside a giant box full of money, GirlSpice danced inside of it as the box lit up in various different colours, they may have said their goodbyes after the performance, but it wasn't the last we saw of them. Their #1 hit single "Dirty Mouth" was their encore performance and the girls most certainly got a little raunchy in backless bondage-style bustiers, performing a sexually suggestive dance routine with each other, before stripping each other down behind a screen where the audience could only see their silhouettes, playful and controversial, it was classic GirlSpice.
If you're looking for a show that focuses purely on the music, obviously you don't look to a GirlSpice show, but for a pop spectacle, the Night Rider Tour is your answer.
