Infinite - Insomnia

There is no disputing that, in the music of the modern world, Infinite are a power house. They currently have two majorly successful albums and a gargantuan fan base to back them up, as well as a number one single. With enigmatic frontman Eric Quillington leading the charge, they seem to be going from strength to strength.

Their latest offering, Insomnia, is a perfect blend of the experimental alternative rock that we know and love and the progressive, conceptual themes of yore. This is a brave, yet strangely fitting move for the band. We are greeted with the unusual sounds of a circus as Eric Quillington takes on the role of the Circus Ringmaster. The song itself is reminiscent of the Beatles “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!” and it is a great way to start the album. It’s a new direction for Infinite, and a great one at that.

It then glides into Loopholes with a great bass intro which provides a setting for the rest of the song. This is a brilliant alternative rock song, you cannot argue with that. Eric’s vocals fit in perfectly, with his intentionally monotonous, yet craftily emotional vocals surrounding the track. Infinite then breaks even more ground with Collision. The guitar is not present on this track; instead, it is left to wander into the world of electronica. However, instead of sounding like a corny dance track, they manage to make it seem spectacularly good. The song bears some similarity to Daft Punk. This is the first real highlight of the album.

Salt is the next song on the album. Matt Roberts makes his singing debut on this song, and it is a nice anthemic song, although overshadowed possibly, by the eclectic nature of the songs that it is sandwiched in between. Vague Similarities follows, and it turns out to be one of the best songs on the album. It combines a chilling instrumental display with some traditional Infinite-isms. It is Blue Nebula, taken to the extreme and back. Shades of Grey, the following song, is absolutely stunning in every way. Most ballads are, for me, usually tedious after a while, but I cannot get tired of this song. It’s just... beautiful.

It then goes into the creepy piano led song Beautiful Solace. It is immediately unnerving, with the ghostly vocals and generally desolated feeling that you get throughout the song. It eventually builds up into a more aggressive front, with the effects put onto the vocals wearing off. You can’t help but get a feeling that something big is about to happen. And so it does. The crushing Chaos Reigns, as well as being one of Infinites heaviest songs, is a clusterfuck of noise that will make you think that the world is coming to an end. It can be genuinely scary at times and you can’t help but believe that this chaos has been orchestrated beautifully by the band. The grand finale is Shards of Glass, which recaps the album that goes before it, reliving the beauty, the emotions and the pure grandiose on display throughout. It is a perfect representation of, not only the album, but of the band as a whole. It is one of the most haunting of all tracks, out of a huge collection of them and that glockenspiel that is evident is used as effectively as it ever could be.

In conclusion, Insomnia isn’t just an album; it’s a work of art. Some fans may feel alienated by this change and the album can occasionally go into territories slightly TOO dark, but I’m sure that most others will feel like it’s a necessary and natural evolution for the band. Mind had the prog rock theatrics, Reckoner had the alternative rock sensibilities and Quarantine had the sheer beauty. Infinite have all three. It will be hard to find a better band out there this year, and this album could possibly go down as one of the most important rock albums of the 21st century.

Can someone please review Chloe's debut album???

1. Autobiography
The album opens up with a track could Autobiography. It has a very strong R&B vibe to it along with the pop oriented chorus. Chloe explains in the song that listening to her album is her own personal biography. She also touches the playful belief that has always struck in the more urban part of music. She sings "They even said this white girl can't rap, now I'm standing with with the best, and I'm acin em, just like a test". The witty line came up as Chloe was writing the song remembering how she received high scores on test mirroring it to the success of her rapping. What stands out the most in this song is the quick paste rap-singing followed by Chloe's captivating voice devouring the hook.

2. I Got Soul
I Got Soul is the second track that comes on after Autobiography and shares some similarities to the opening track but holds some differences as well. I Got Soul deeps digger as it holds a very quick but soulful beat having Chloe sing the chorus about her demanding for respect when it comes to being a very soulful artist because "She Got Soul". Playful but serious, the part that stands out in the song is the very heavy jazz oriented trombone, bass and drum combo that rides from the bridge and comes back on with the ending chorus, riding the song to its ending. A very inspirational song in the end.

3.W.T.F (ft Miss Vanity)
W.T.F is a track that would make a fan think, what the f*ck after looking at the title. It would seem odd to some that Miss Vanity is on a track with the very versatile and urban Chloe, but this song develops a sound that we didn't hear from Chloe. After Man Down's debut, fans heard a more urban/R&B and especially dancehall sound influence but with W.T.F we get a different sound. This song is a very symphonic pop song that seems to add on to the low amounts of this type of sound, starting with one of 2010's hugest single releases "Red Symphony" by Michelle Green. But this song doesn't include an indie root to it. W.T.F is the captivating expect of original, but poppy orchestral music topped off with a danceable base line and beat that would make a person really think "Is this an invented sound?". What is likeable about this song is that it can be taken seriously on a musical stand point while remaining playful and able to play in the countries hottest clubs.

Miss Vanity just adds on even more to the surprising sound, she brings on her powerful vocals and harmonizing belts adding on to quite the unorthodox-ed meaning of the song. Now, W.T.F was titled after what has happened in their song which can be taken very controversially. In the song the women sing about an online "relationship" with a female and a female posing as a man on the other end (Miss Vanity) they share a very strong love interest and decide to meet up, when they finally meet and Chloe feasts her eyes on a female instead of the male she was in love with and has to come up with a solution to this surprise, continue this date with this adoring and trustful female or leave her at the spot. One may make a controversial stink about the song and others might like the meaning behind it, but one thing we know for sure is, its different because its Chloe & of course, Miss Vanity.

4. Dreams (Ft. Alicia Lena)
Returning to a more R&B/Soul sound, Dreams is the first ballad to appear on the album. The song is very soulful and includes very light and inspirational vocals from R&B/Pop Princess Alicia Lena. The song is about believing in your dreams, and even though people constantly hold you back from chasing them, you keep moving forward to you achieve it. The breakdown into the bridge gives us a beautiful treat having Alicia's magnificent vocals and Chloe's powerful and witty pipes sing over other, note in, note out. Forcing a listen to rewind back to it, and listen again because its that special.

5. Butterfly
Butterfly is a med tempo pop song that has Chloe speaking in metaphors for most of the song speaking of her state of happiness at this very point. Only singing in the song, not rapping as well. She sings "I'm so high, I feel like a butterfly"
along with other heart pulling lyrics that gives you the general feeling of happiness when listening to the song.

6. Cupid's Twin
Cupids Twin was used as the albums lead single and proved as a success after charting in the Top 10 in the U.S and U.K and number 3 on the Top 20 chart. The song, known to many, is a small return of dancehall in music mixed with R&B and Pop sounds. Song gives you a very scary and jittery, nervous feeling, leaving you with a cliff hanger at the end. Cupids Twin, is written as a song about Cupids evil twin sister, who goes around breaking 5 men hearts badly, and not caring about it, sort of moving on to the next guy and repeating this routine to every man due to her looks and fooling words. In the end all 5 men band together and go after the heartbreaking Chloe, who is also Cupids evil twin. The song hits its climax when Cupids Twin expresses her nervousness to be out and has to flee town because their coming to get her. The song ends in a fading mist as the men finally find Chloe in hiding....what happens next? We may never know. Actually, if you purchase the deluxe version of the album (Cupids Hold (Pt Two)), a continuation is present.

7. Tales From The Crazy Mouth (Ft Matty)
After the anxious and upbeat feeling behind Cupids Twin, the next song that rides in starts out with an applauding audience with a comedic stand up man yelling the words "Welcome To Tales From The Crazy Mouth!" After that is over, the listeners are introduced with a very edgy and dramatic start of the song, so we are guessing that the song is talking about two artists who have "crazy" mouths and can't control what comes out of them, we were, correct. Here with the crazy mouths are top male rapper Matty and the even crazier Chloe really going "crazy" with their raps here. When you think of Chloe and Matty you think of a rap battle made in heaven and these artists are going back and forth heavily talking about people who have done things to them and the psychotic outcome that came out of it. We know a lot of the things they are speaking about are false but we can't help but to listen to the quick, outrageous and futuristic hip hop match that is similar to Nicki Minaj's Roman Revenge. In the track, we also get the first taste of an edgier Matty who we are used to making light and radio friendly hip hop music. This time he throws that away as he shows a different side of his persona along with Chloe. This can be considered another stand out track on the album because Chloe's rap skills upstage many rap artists in this song for the almost 5 minute edgy and futuristic song.

8. I Believe In A Thing Called Love
This track is a very soft R&B/Pop ballad that gives you a very soft and suttle feeling towards it. The song is about the belief in love and that your true love is out their somewhere and that Chloe is out to find who that very person is. The ending is beautiful, having Chloe sing her heart away in this "less is more" song. Having less of a chaotic beat but more natural and soft beat that leaves the listener feeling very warm hearted and eager to find that special one.

9.Catch Me
Catch Me takes a similar approach with the less if more type of music having a softer buildup and a thunderous chorus talking about how Chloe won't catch herself being caught up with another persons lies. She won't ever fall for a liar ever in her life and let's that belief out loud and clear as she sings you won't catch me over each chorus adding on quirky lyrics, this song is perfect for a sing along.

10. Just My Heels and My Notepad (Nothing Else)
This track is a alternative hip hop song that takes a slower approach, with a mid temp and Chloe sings laid back and deeper then usual talking about her weird way of writing music, with just her heels and notepad and nothing else. It is quite a weird practice but Chloe let's it all out when she talks about letting all her thoughts out, nakedly in her room penciling the hits that she makes. A funny song that shows just how Chloe really is (and weird)

11. Keyboard Occasion
Keyboard Occasion would be the next stand out track on the album. The song has leading keyboard work from (uncredited) European keyboard man Yuron. The song has a slow and deep beginning, as the keyboards come in, one by one, as Chloe sings about how she is a natural woman, how she relates with the keyboards naturalness and so calls the song, a keyboard occasion.

12. The Life (Ft Jenny Hudson)
The Life is a song that takes a more poprock/R&B mix up that sounds surprisingly well together. Jenny Hudson sings over the hook singing "The Life" as Chloe sings over her. The song talks about sitting down, taking a break from the rich life and just "living the life" relaxing and sitting back, enjoying a weekend, not to stress out the life and just live it to the fullest. The song is very badass and would make any person who listens to it on a friday night after a look week of work, wanna go out and live the life for the weekend. The song will make any person have a good feeling.

13. Here I am
Here I am, the last track, is a track where Chloe is leaving us off with a sweet and strong rap song, having a hook that can be compared to the original rap songs that was present many years ago. The song speaks about Chloe who is trying her hardest to solidify herself in music as a great figure, she's trying to make people chase there dreams, try their hardest, never give up and just live the life to their fullest potential. Another heavily inspirational song, letting us know that Chloe has the note to inspire other people with the album, and let's us off with something sweet.

Deluxe Edition Bonus Tracks

14. He's Gonna Cry
A soul/pop/alternative song that speaks about two girls caught in a love triangle who band together to get the man back in the end (#2 - Top 20)

15. Cupid's Hold (Part 2)
Continuation of Cupids Twin, this time the men capture Cupids evil twin and have her in a holding cell, the twin is begging for forgiveness and tries her lies and scams to get through to the men, but it doesn't seem to work, do they kill the twin? Only time will tell in this dance hall track.

16. That American Man
A soft pop song that talks about Chloe meeting an American man and falling head over heels for him.

17. Bass Drum
A sweet R&B rap and sing along song that tells the story of a man that makes Chloe's heart feel like a bass drum because he's so perfect for her. Great and loveable song that includes a bass and drum, similar to the second track on the album.

In the end, Chloe clearly wants to prove to us listeners that she can swim into different genres and hold her own while performing it, whether its rap, R&B, Soul, Pop, Dancehall or Hip Hop, Chloe has showed her different elements and has managed to deliver us an album with many different genres incorporated into one, and made it work, now its only up to the listeners to tell what they think. January 15th...

Cherise - Redlight
by Daniel Antherstein

Following the breakup of RnB duo AngelicDevil, one half of the two(Cherise) decided to continue her music career solo. Cherise is now two singles into her debut album, "Destination Unknown" which releases on the 14th of March.

Redlight is the second track off "Destination Unknown" and the second single as well. The single comes in two flavors, Regular and MattY Mix, I'll be reviewing both. The regular RedLight single features Cherise singing about her club prowess, the lyrics are fine for an upbeat RnB song and the MattY Mix further elaborates on this. Both are accompanied by music videos that showcase this.

RedLight is a fine single for it gives a party classic type of hint but it feels kind of generic in a way too, I hope "Destination Unknown" won't be.

A sophomore album is always a tricky task for anyone. How to expand on what you delivered previously and how to create something that’s fresh and not a rehash of old material. Some people crumble under the pressure of it all and some people rise to the occasion, rarely is their an in-between.
Hannah Beth returned after a brief disappearance from the music industry and quickly began work on her sophomore effort Tough And Tender and may have surprised people from the get-go with the opening track.

Dangerous
A guitar fuelled less than friendly track, it’s title said everything you needed to know and it’s a nice change to see a “pop” artist let go and unleash a certain devilish charm. Certainly different from what we’re used to and a welcome change.
It’s a dark tale straight from the Stephen King handbook that follows a young girl with a duel personality, a murder mystery party turns into a real life nightmare as 6 people fall victim to the young girls split personality. It sets the album up very nicely and gives Hannah room to move without raising expectations too high. All in all a good foundation to build the album on.

Shout (I Love You)
Your quickly brought back down to reality with a bump with the second song. A very different, pop friendly approach about just shouting about how much you love someone, Similar in theory to the Alicia Lena collaboration Rooftops (Feat. Ryan Ross Hernandez). It’s a total pop love song and couldn’t be more different from the album opener, it may make some people feel like vomiting at the sheer levels of happiness in the track but it’s charming nevertheless.

Think Again
This song seems to be in keeping with the previous track rather than the opener. Hannah seems like a completely different artist on this track, certainly in comparison to Dangerous.
It’s another radio friendly pop track, it’s a kind of break up song, not exactly an original idea but it puts a smile on your face and provides charm and warmth. Although the song may be radio friendly and pop oriented you can see the maturity in Hannah Beth’s writing, growth from an artist and at the perfect time.
It’s essentially about a girl attempting to make her ex-boyfriend jealous in a last ditch attempt to make him miss her, it’s heart warming and charming, but fails to stand alongside other commercially succesfull pop songs.

Catch Your Eye
The standout track possibly. Well there’s a few stand out tracks on the album and this is definitely one of them. It’s an upbeat song, possibly about a young girl who happens to enjoy attention but maybe enjoys teasing a little more. It’s a song about a young girl content on flirting with a man at a club with no intention of taking things any further, slightly frustrating for the guy? Maybe but it makes for a very interesting and fun pop track with more of a dance influence to it. Likely to become a big hit in clubs all over the USA.

Best Kept Secret
A decent track but it fails to stand alongside Catch Your Eye, Dangerous, When I’m Dead and A Fathers Love. It’s a song about a girl in the midst of an affair, after finding herself frustrated at sharing a man, she decides to reveal herself as the mistress to her lovers other woman. Despite It’s rhythmic beats, easy melodies and catchy chorus, it fails to give this track any real depth and lacks anything other than a passing appreciation at the musicianship on show. It’s not gonna break ground but it’s listenable enough to redeem it from being considered a poor effort.

Save Her
This is the kind of song that I particularly enjoy. It’s story and it’s depth is what makes it memorable. It’s about a young girl who happens to be treated badly by her mother, abuse, sorrow and a somewhat surprising ending. It’s haunting melodies and vocally one of the strongest tracks on the album gives it a memorable quality.

Emily’s Song
At this point, you may be thinking, please not another love song, it is a story overused in every kind of medium, films have made this kind of story over and over again and there’s been so many songs that have followed this kind of story.
It’s about a young girl who falls in love with a young guy, as love always is when your young, it’s naïve and it’s wreckless and as you’d expect, one of them has to leave and oh, the one left behind finds a new love and oh she ends up being torn between two lovers. However, Hannah can be forgiven because she’s young and she’s allowed to dream, my least favourite song on the album.

Stray
A story about the first time you leave home, a song everyone can relate to and a very honest representation of it. That loneliness and fear you feel and then the comfort and normality that begins to happen as you get used to leaving home. It’s very honest and at some points can even choke you up as you remember that feeling of independence and leaving your old life behind, a sweet and surprise track, definitely worth a listen.

A Fathers Love
This song has so much raw emotion. Hannah opens her heart on the track and you can’t help but feel pain for the person singing. The lyrics are beautiful and the music is just as good but it never takes away from the lyrics and that is something to behold, certainly for someone considered to be a popstar. The music never takes away from the lyrics in this song and the emotion is incredible, it has depth and that’s what I’m looking for from music. Easily the standout track from the album.

Stand Alone (A Fool For You)
A total, teen drama track, in my opinion anyway. It’s about dealing with heartbreak and moving forward with your life. It’s the story of a girl, unlucky in love and now unwilling to open her heart to anyone, of course as the song progresses, she finds someone who happens to start to open heart up a little bit. It’s another pop song on a predominantly pop album, it’s a good track and could be a pretty succesfull single.

Thinking Of You
This track is the second part of A Fathers Love. Written together with her young brother as was A Fathers Love and it shows just how good they could become as a song writing team, although this isn’t another pop song. It’s about remembering the person who loved you most in the world after they’ve gone and it’s another of those emotional tracks that Hannah seems to have found a niche with and I think this could be the future of her music. If she can continue to write such beautifully emotional songs then she’s got an incredible future ahead of her.

Just Another
It’s another song about independence and it sets the album up for a great ending, the previous track gave you emotion and feeling and this track gives you a smile and some inspiration. It’s about being more than someone’s girlfriend. It’s about creating your own path and walking it. It’s your life and you should walk it the way you want to. It’s about taking charge and it’s another good song.

When I’m Dead
The bonus track ends the album perfectly. It’s an upbeat track about leaving one life behind, will you miss people when your gone, It’s another really well written track and another with an element of emotion to it. A line, “You Don’t Know What You’ve Got Until It’s Gone.” couldn’t describe the song anymore. It’s a very good song and if Hannah can continue to write these kind of songs throughout her career then it’s gonna be a very long career indeeed.

The album is a worthwhile purchase. It’s an emotional rollercoaster at times, one moment your smiling and the next your almost on the verge of tears. It has it’s bad points but they’re almost completely outweighed by the good points, standout track, Dangerous, Catch Your Eye, A Fathers Love, Thinking Of You, Just Another and When I’m Dead are all songs which are certainly worth listening to. And there’s a few upbeat pop tracks for the casual fan but for someone looking for something with a little bit more, I recommend taking a listen to this album, it has depth and emotion and feeling but it also doesn’t stray too far into the darkness.
All in all a good sophomore record and something to build on, maybe just perfecting one or two of those pop songs that fill the middle of the album would be a good idea and could in the future turn her work from good into great. But I’d definitely recommend this album.

7/10
