JASON SMITH TO WORK WITH UNKNOWN MODERN CONCEPTUAL ARTIST/ DIRECTOR/ POET/ "MUSICIAN"/ OTHER. Above: Tomas Lonnquist. Little known Swedish cult artist Tomas Lonnquist, more commonly known as Tom Jarrett, has confirmed that he is working with rock megastar Jason Smith on a concept album entitled Maverick Mayfly under the self-admittedly "unoriginal" name of Smith and Jarrett, which will see a release later this year after Smith releases his album with Mind. The statement that Jarrett has made has been confirmed by Smith. Tom Jarrett:"It is with utmost pleasure that I announce the arrival of Maverick Mayfly, an album that I have created alongside the genius Jason Smith. Me and Jason go years back, to when he first toured in Sweden... if I remember correctly, the whole of Mind were in a bar one night and, by the time I arrived there, they were already completely inebriated. We soon got chatting and, after a large amount of alcohol consumption, myself and Smith agreed that one day, we would make an album full of weird, artsy, texture based pieces of music. I thought that he had forgotten about it when he sobered up, but, around about 10 months ago, I got an e-mail from the man himself wanting to catch up. I flew directly over to England and we discussed plans for something that we were calling Mayfly. Eventually, this grew and grew into a magnificent concept about how the incredibly short lifespan of a mayfly can be likened to one of our own. It sounds awfully dreary, pretentious and nonsensical, but once you listen to it, you'll get what I mean.
The album will not interfere with any of our projects, such as Jason's Mind and Project; Prometheus, and my exhibitions and new DVD of beat poetry (coming out next week!). Musically, this album is sort of like a neo-psychedelic, electronic afflicted, indie tinged minimalist piece of art pop. It will definitely not be what anyone expects from either of us. We are both usually quite nihilistic, dark, twisted artists... however, Maverick Mayfly, in the end, is a very positive story. To fully get the story involves deep thinking, but we still want it to be a good listening experience nonetheless.
Work finished on the album around about 3 months ago, but a lot was going on for both of us back then, so we didn't want to put any more pressure on anyone.
