TRACK 4: Dracula
GENRE: Hard Rock, Garage Rock, Art Rock

Quote:
"This is one of the songs that was on ZMIX! - that little mixtape I put out so that there would be a chance that by the time I got to Aphrodisiac people would know me. I think it might have helped - some of the people at the concert sang along. Anyways, this song went on the mixtape because 1) I had finished it and 2) it really represents the middle ground of my material. When I'm not being all lovey-dovey and hippy-dippy, and when I'm not being all "cut your dick off and shove a pumpkin up your ass," I'm being just like this. Hard rocking and odd, but with a more accessible flavor than my other work. 'Dracula' is mostly about me taking myself seriously. I don't, and I shouldn't. That's why it's got the grandeur of a ballsy rock song, but with all the quirky artsy influences that speak to the music nerd in all of us."

The song begins immediately, with a fuzzy, distorted guitar line. The song has an almost garage-rockish type sound, with less of the wall of sound production that Zander uses on most of his songs. After a few seconds of just the guitar chugging, Zander's vocals come in, powerful and theatric, and a second guitar echoes the cadences of the lyrics,

oh! eyes are on you now
you seem to draw a crowd
underneath the shade
oh! fight until you die
you made the children cry
why must you misbehave?

With a crash, the drums and bass come in, backing the rocking groove of the two distorted guitars,

no! i am not alone
who can i call my own?
who can i make mine?
woah! it kills me when you're gone
my forgotten sun
oh but i'm so cold

The simple guitar chugging turn to epic chords as Zander sings the soaring chorus,

suck blood to get higher!
you were always my favorite vampire!
dracula!

with hatred as your fire!
you always get me higher!
dracula!

The verse part returns, Zander's voice getting more powerful with each line,

owch! burned into my skin
tatoo of my sin
sinking deeper in
light! blinds me everywhere
outside, i don't dare
but do you smell burning hair?

the sun makes me perspire!
my blood pressure gets higher!
you were always my favorite vampire!
oh why can't we be friends - dracula!

All the instruments but the guitar and drums drop out, as they play a simple, repetitive beat. It seems to be building to a climax, slowly getting more tense, before returning to the verse/chorus part

why! why, why, why oh why!
did you have to die?
did i have to live!
hate! stupid fucking hate!
i only took the bait
i should be in bed by eight!

the rush of getting higher!
my family members conspire!
you were always my favorite vampire!
oh, how i wish i was higher! dracula!

The song slowly fades out.

TRACK 5: Mulch
GENRE: Progressive Metal, Experimental Metal

"Mulch," the fifth track on Calm Storm is where Zander's metal influences begin to show themselves. The song clocks in at a staggering 10 minutes, which Zander explains to be "basically diarrhea of the mouth and fingers and constipation of the sense of overstaying your welcome."
Quote:
"Mulch is such a long fucking song. If you actually listen to it all the way through, I'm proud of you. It'll put hair on your chest. Lyrically it's more oblique, weird pairings of words that I came up with when stoned. I came up with the title first - Mulch just sounded cool to me - and then the lyrics came. It's basically a message to myself, telling myself to be creative but to never be too proud."

The song begins with a thundering, epic sounding guitar riff that is soon overwhelmed with layers upon layers of chunkier riffs and rumbling bass, ambient, almost new-agey sounding samples, and heavy drums. Zander's voice breaks through the storm of chords and notes, echoing off into the distance.

use yourself, abuse yourself
mold yourself, you've sold yourself
shape yourself, create yourself
you're human mulch, human soil
cycles upon cycles, break the cycle
dirt shoved into my eyes
straight down the drain
someone massage my brain
you're human soil, fertilize somewhere else

The song continues, the riffs swirling and overlapping for minutes until Zander's voice returns with a resounding crash.

i saw god, i saw god
and he was mechanical
i saw jesus, i saw jesus
he's just the result of a chemical
it's your birthday, it's his birthday
gave his blood, he'll come again
gave his blood, he'll come again
it's your worst day, it's his worst day
feed your creativity
cycles upon cycles
don't fear your prisons
it cycles and cycles
you're a fucking maggot
you crawl in the soil
you're a fucking maggot
you crawl in my soil
so fuck it, i don't even care!
fuck you, see if i care!
listen, you fuck!
earth cries, she bleeds! she fucking bleeds!

The music suddenly takes an uplifting turn, ascending guitar riffs and swirly synths accompany a heavy drum beat as Zander's multitracked vocals sing,

take! your! time!
take! your! time!
it's! only! a!
matter! of! time!
leave! your! home!
destruction!
you, garbage creature
you'll never take my clarity!
you'll never take my clarity!
this doesn't mean anything to me!
you're just a lying piece of meat!
this music - this fucking music!

The music stops, and Zander speaks the nexst line,

Why the fuck do I think you care!?

The music returns, more and more riffs overlap until it sounds very much like a churning storm, and Zander screams the lines incredibly fast, his vocals almost indecipherable,

insipid, so vapid, so livid!
you think you're an artist but really you're just a fucking asshole!
you think you're an artist but nobody wants to listen to your problems!
you think you're an artist you're just an old baldheaded hippy!
you think you're an artist but no one gives two shits about you!

The riffs slow down as Zander stops screaming and resumes singing, his voice powerful,

destruction! instruction!
it cycles and cycles!
destruction! instruction!
it cycles and cycles!
his birthday, your worst day,
blood he gave! for us he gave!
well fuck you! and fuck christ too!
destruction! instruction!
it cycles and cycles!
destruction! instruction!
it cycles and cycles!
human mulch! human soil!
you're worth so much!
but still so little,
so stop complaining!
stop, don't whine!
let's go far away!
pick up some clay!
create!
create!

The riffs clash and overlap each other for a full minute before they begin to fade out as the song ends.

TRACK 6: Alarm Clock
GENRE: Progressive Rock, Indie Rock, Alternative Rock

Just as "Spring Sun" served to introduce people to the album, "Alarm Clock" is a kind of intermission of sorts, coming after the long, epic, and frantic "Mulch." "Alarm Clock" lacks Zander's layered production; like "Spring Sun" it was recorded live in one take in the back of Zander's van. The wind can be heard blowing against the metal sides of the vehicle, and Zander can be heard sitting down and idly tapping a few notes on his keyboard. He adjusts the mic,

1, 2, 3, 4...

and begins to play somber sounding chords, his keyboard sounding like a church organ and reverberating throughout the metal box he's recording in. Rain can be heard falling on the rooftop. His vocals are soft and reserved, almost whispering, and very soothing,

everybody told me
that my love was dead
everybody told me
love was just in my head

everybody told me
that love was dead
everything's a product
of someone else's creativity

nobody told me
when the morning came
the north winds took me
blew me away

A cough is heard, along with the sounds of Zander taking a sip of water. He then continues to play the melancholy chords to the song, keeping time by kicking a bass drum along with the keyboard. The entire length of the first three verses is repeated without lyrics, just the sullen sounding keys and thundering bass drum, as the rain sounds get harder and thunder is heard in the distance. After a while, the instruments fade out until it's just a single note being held on the keyboard. Zander barely breathes the last line,

good morning, beautiful,

and suddenly, jarringly, the clanging of an alarm clock is heard, jerking the listener from the calmness of the song. The sound fades out and the track ends.

TRACK 7: Weekend
GENRE: Progressive Rock, Ambient/Atmospheric Rock

Fading in from the stormy ending of the previous track "Alarm Clock," "Weekend" slowly fades in with the sound of the wind. Zander strums a few chords on his guitar which seem to echo on into forever. After a few strums, a second guitar comes in, playing a heavy but still gentle riff ass the drums and bass return. The music is heavily layered and sonically pleasing, with pop melody and harmony buried underneath the multitracked riffs.
Quote:
"Weekend is a perfect intro to the last half of the album, a gentler take on the heavy metal elements explored earlier on the album. It's kind of the quintessential example of what the album is about, musically. Lyrically, it's kind of like stepping outside for the first time after spending a night in my van during "Alarm Clock.""

Zander's voice is soft, soothing even, as he croons the lyrics against the heavy backdrop of epic-sounding synths and layered guitars.

dreamed
yawned
there's another way
i know when it's time to say
it's a shame
mysteriously astray
but happily away
it's a weekend

The ambient side of Zander's music shines through in this song, with ethereal nature sounds just barely audible under the other instruments. The guitars and synthesizers work together to perfectly match Zander's vocals, which are multitracked just like the instruments, sometimes having Zander's voice overdubbed 7 or 8 times in order to get a choir-like sound.

there's a time
and a place
it's a torrent that rushes
from my brain place
from the mortals there
from my brain place
i love it, too
i hate it, too
i won't wait for it to
but i will weigh it for you

The instruments build to a fever pitch, the guitars getting heavier and heavier as the synthesizers become more frantic. The song returns to it's more mellow state as Zander plays a fast and masterful solo, segueing into a calmer rendition of the main riff as the vocals return,

there's a calm
and there's a storm
but in between, what's left to say?
what's left to hear?
at the end of the day
the rumbling storm takes it away
the calm we can appreciate
the storm will put us in it's place
but it's the inbetweens
those pretty seams
that keep us in our place

Zander holds the final note of the song as the instruments fade away into soothing ambient noise.

TRACK 8: Out
GENRE: Indie Rock, Ambient, Experimental

The 8th track, 'Out,' is yet another softer song showcasing Zander's more experimental side. The song has almost no lyrics except for a few lines that are repeated against a backdrop of clashing, fuzzy keyboards, distorted acid rock guitar, thunderous drum fills, and crashing cymbals and gongs. Zander even plays ukulele on this track, plucking out bright sounding notes that make the cacophony easier to swallow. The song isn't very structured, with the instruments seemingly fighting it out for top spot, competing for the listener's attention, as the music approaches a crescendo of sonic disharmony that is strangely beautiful before the song becomes nothing but white noise.

we're all, we're all
down
we're all, we're all
we're all, we're all
down
we're
we're all down
we're
we are
we're all, we're all
we're all, we're all
we're
we are
we are all
down
down, but not out

TRACK 9: Killing Moon
GENRE: Indie Rock, Alternative Rock, Post-punk

The 9th track, "Killing Moon," is a cover/reworking of Echo and the Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon," with a different set of lyrics written by Zander.
Quote:
"I just thought that the original song expressed itself so beautifully and perfectly, and that I could use it to express my own words. Musically, it's different yet still maintains the feeling and emotion in the original song. The lyrics are kind of my take on the original version, and I think it's an interesting song. Hopefully I don't get sued."

The song begins with the familiar opening riff of "The Killing Moon," albeit played much slower and on an electric guitar. Zander's take on the song is much more laid back than the original version, with jangly guitars and simplistic drum and basslines as he sings the lyrics softly,

under blue moon i saw you
you said that you'd take me
you said you'd love me maybe
but i'm feeling way too crazy

it's killing time
i'm killing mine

During the chorus, two more guitars come in, replicating the string ensemble of the original version with shimmery, echoing chords and reserved but bright synths,

faith, up against a whale
through the thick and thin
he waited until
your heart would let him in

Zander plays a short, bluesy solo before the verse returns,

under red moon you took me
so soon you said you'd keep me
i'm so distressed at the thought
of sharing my death with someone else

it's killing time
but don't kill mine

This time, actual strings come in to back the three guitar attack of the chorus. As the strings take on a lighter tone, the guitars become more distorted and fuzzy,

faith, up against my will
through the times of sin
they will wait until
my heart will let them in

killing time
killing mine
killing mime
it's killing time

The guitars overwhelm and overlap each other as they get louder and louder, drowning the other instruments out into white noise as the song comes to a crashing end.

TRACK 10: Overcast
GENRE: Progressive Metal, Hard Rock

The album's epic closer, "Overcast," is 11 minutes of pure, quintessential Zander Gray. Much of the song is based off of one, heavy, rollicking riff that repeats over and over again, sometimes shifting rhythmically but staying essentially the same. The production is superb, with the wall of sound that Zander is known for really being showcased.
Quote:
"When I wrote this I knew it would be the closer of the album because of how long it took me to finish it. I just kept adding more lyrics and extra stuff to it so I would have a chance to say everything I wanted. I did this because I knew it was the end. Lyrically, I'm trying to cram all my thoughts about the album into this last song to achieve closure. I don't want to put out a Calm Storm Part 2. This is it. This is the point of no return. If you listen to the album from beginning to end, then you understand."

Musically, the song is relatively straightforward as the hulking riff rolls along, speeding up, slowing down, but usually staying the same as more is added on top of it. Twinkling synths give it a space rock feel, and occasional guitar leads break the monotony as the song lumbers forward. Zander's vocals are polished and smooth as his voice resounds over the musical backdrop provided. Towards the end, the song only becomes heavier and slower as it churns and sputters out, leaving behind only clean guitars as Zander croons the last lines. As the song fades out, the sounds of rain falling, birds chirping, and the wind blowing can be heard as the cacophony dies out, ending the album on a peaceful, tranquil note.

yeah! it's so grey,
but today seems beautiful
there's so much
don't pretend like you don't give a fuck
i love it
i love it
there are soft rains
yeah! not today
you won't get my heart today
save it for tomorrow
it's too much
i feel like i've heard it all before
bore
boring, bored, bore, boring
yeah! let's play
let's go outside and sit in the rain
our feet are wet but we don't care
yeah! today
the water comes to wash our sins away
we love everything, even though everything hates us

yeah!
so what have we learned?
and what have we found?
did we find the truth while we were down but not out?
and for you, my friend
i'd do it all again
but please don't impose
and please don't just pose
it's raining, you can find me outside
you can find me outside!
no need to hide, my friends
love is just around the corner
and i think we can learn
something about one another
it's a big sharing circle
but i'll be the only one to share
i'll lay my soul bare for you
so what have we learned?
from this experience we find
we can all find peace of mind
we all have our inner storms
that start as soon as we are born
but next time you're about to drop a bomb
remember to keep your storm relatively calm
cathartic!
oh, hug me!
cathartic!
oh, loathe me, lonely, godly, cleanly,

it's overcast
it's raining
if you want me i'll be outside
because the lonely are never alone...

George: Dude this is killer! Especially the last track 'Overcast.' We need to do a show together.

Irwin: Ain't it a wee bit early to start asking other groups to play shows together? We haven't even got enough songs to play! I agree though. These songs are a masterpiece of metallic and progressive music.

Zander: Thank you, friends. I've liked what I've heard from you guys, keep up at it, I know you've got some amazing potential. If I need openers or tour buddies, I'll make sure to give you guys a call.
