Artist: Medina
Title: Chase the Horizon
Genres: Pop-Rock ∙ alternative rnb ∙ sofi
Length: 4:17
Writers: Medina & Greg Kurstin
Producer: Medina & Greg Kurstin
Label: Obsidian
From The Album: Voyage to Venusia

"Chase the Horizon" is a track that marks a significant evolution in Medina's musical journey, reflecting a blend of introspection, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of authenticity. Nearly a decade after her debut album "Paper Light," which received a lukewarm reception for its perceived lack of depth, Medina embarked on a path of musical rediscovery. This period saw her releasing a series of singles, including the notable "Feels Right" and "Fighting Through," which resonated with a wide audience despite the challenges she faced with label partnerships. Her experiences with Warner Music, Safe Haven Records, and the missed opportunity with FivePeskyKids, which could have heralded a defining era in pop music for her, instead led to a phase of reflection and eventual independence with the establishment of her own label, Obsidian. During this transformative time, Medina honed her songwriting skills, which is evident in her contributions to hits for various artists like CMBD, Uphoria, and Chaelin. She also refined her vision for her own music. "Chase the Horizon" emerges from this period of introspection as a poignant narrative that weaves together the threads of Medina's personal and professional growth. Collaborating closely with Greg Kurstin, the song encapsulates the essence of pop-rock, alternative R&B, and synthpop genres, showcasing Medina's versatility and depth as an artist.

The lyrics of "Chase the Horizon" serve as a metaphorical compass guiding listeners through Medina's journey toward self-discovery and artistic freedom. Lines like "In the silence of my mind, your echoes slowly fade" and "Wrapped in cosmic wonders, away from the spotlight" reflect a departure from past uncertainties and a bold step into uncharted territories. The track's composition, a collaborative effort between Medina and Kurstin, complements the lyrical themes with its rich, layered production that intertwines ethereal melodies with compelling rhythms, inviting listeners to embark on a voyage of their own. In her Pitchfork interview, Medina opens up about the challenges she faced and the resilience required to overcome them. Her return signifies not only a rekindling of her passion for music but also a recommitment to her fans, promising a sophomore album that not only charts her growth as an artist but also seeks to inspire others to chase their own horizons. With "Chase the Horizon," Medina sets the stage for "Voyage to Venusia," an album that promises to be a testament to her journey, her struggles, and ultimately, her triumphs.

Medina via Pitchfork Interview wrote:
"Embarking on 'Voyage to Venusia' felt like setting sail into uncharted waters after years of being anchored. Reflecting on my past, I realized the importance of not just evolving as an artist but doing so on my own terms. The journey wasn't easy; navigating through the industry's highs and lows, label changes, and the quest for a sound that truly represented me was daunting. Yet, it was through this odyssey that 'Chase the Horizon' was born. This track, and the album as a whole, symbolizes not just my return, but my transformation. Working with Greg Kurstin was pivotal; our synergy in the studio brought to life the soundscapes that I had been dreaming of. This project is deeply personal, a narrative of breaking free from the echoes of doubt and embracing the vastness of my own potential. To my fans, this album is a testament to the fact that it's never too late to pursue your dreams, to redefine your path, and to chase the horizon, no matter how distant it may seem."

"Chase the Horizon"

In the silence of my mind, your echoes slowly fade,
A tapestry of dreams where my doubts are laid.
Under the watchful eyes of a neon sky,
I'm dancing with my shadows, learning how to fly.

Once we played a game under society's gaze,
In a house of mirrors, lost in a maze.
Now I sing my truth, far from your lies,
Finding my reflection in the midnight skies.

Drinking the universe, I dive into the night,
Wrapped in cosmic wonders, away from the spotlight.
Drinking the universe, where my heart ignites,
In the search for truth, I find my might.

I shed the layers of a life too small,
Stepping out of the frame, breaking the wall.
In the quiet of the dark, I rewrite my story,
Chasing the stars, in all their glory.

"Be who you are," the stars whisper to me,
In the galaxy's embrace, I find the key.

Drinking the universe, I dive into the night,
Wrapped in cosmic wonders, away from the spotlight.
Drinking the universe, where my heart ignites,
In the search for truth, I find my might.

From the ashes of our tale, a new path I carve,
In the canvas of the night, my spirit starves.
For a drop of authenticity in this masquerade,
Under the constellation's shade, my fears fade.

Ethereal

Past the curtains of conformity, I soar,
Finding solace in the stars, forevermore.
In this cosmic ballet, where I'm no longer caged,
On the stage of the universe, I'm finally engaged.

Beyond the facade, in the silence, I thrive,
In the symphony of the cosmos, I'm alive.
Discovering the essence, where I truly belong,
In this interstellar journey, I find my song.

Beyond the masquerade, into the cosmic sea,
I embrace the mystery, setting my heart free.
In the dance with the stars, I claim my decree,
In the vast universe, I'm unapologetically me.

Erich: it makes me want to sing into a hairbrush and throw open my window. Then a gust of wind would blow the silk curtains dramatically. It's that beautiful, Medina. My little baby is all grown up.

Ashford York: Medina, this is a fantastic comeback single, the way you manage to manoeuvre between genres within a track is remarkable and truly showcases your ability and the lyrics show just how incredibly unique and talented you are in that aspect which has always been what makes you stand out among the crowd. Incredible comeback and hopefully the beginning of something truly special!
