NEW LOOK WEBSITE COMING SOON!
Info.Brown Sugar were formed in early 2009. Fantasic Records wanted a new girl band to join their label as sales of their other artists were declining. Representitives for the label went out talent scouting. They first found guitar playing beauty, Una Harvey. Una got the attention of the scouts because of her rich, throaty vocals. Ife Kuku was next to join the band, her soulful rendition of "Unfaithful" by Rihanna, at the auditions earned her a place in the band. Then 17 year old child model Victoria Black joined the group, her uncle who worked for Fantastic Records recommended her to the label and when she auditioned for them they were blown away by her big strong voice. Saffia Saunders and Chloe Byrne were the last to be found. They had worked together before in short-lived UK Pop/R&B girlband "Scrumptious". "Scrumptious" never released any material. Saffia and Chloe were chosen because "Scrumptious" were previously signed to Fantastic records before they disbanded and the record label thought that they were extremely talented. After "Brown Sugar" were finally put together, they started to record their debut album. The groups debut single "Don't Wanna Know" became a radio station favourite and was used in an episode of "Hollyoaks". "Don't Wanna Know" peaked at No.27 in the UK. The groups debut album "Chasing Rainbows" was released 3 weeks later to rave reviews. The album went straight into the Top 10 and peaked at No.8. Brown Sugar then released their second single "Moving Up" which peaked at No.8 in the UK and No.9 in
"The Top 20". Brown Sugar released their third single "Can't Hide It" in the UK two weeks ago and went staight to No.1! The new single Just Can't Get Enough will be released in May! Chloe and Saffia have defected from the group and have been replaced by Serenity White and Sierrah Summers.
The GirlsIfeIfe Kuku was born on 24th December 1990 to Gloria Wakki and Gaetano Kuku. She is of a Zimbabwe family but was born in Milton Keynes, England and has spoke in English all of her life. When she was 5 years old she entered a dance competition at her local community centre. She came first in the competition, beating more than 20 other competitors, she was also the youngest in the contest. At the age of 10 she entered her school's annual talent show. Ife sang "Killing Me Softly" by The Fugees. She received a standing ovation from the whole school. Ife won the competion and soon became recognised throughout her home town. She would then go on and perform at Church and also at Holiday/Annual events in the local community. At 14 years of age, Ife entered her secondary school's talent show. She sang "Lately" by Samantha Mumba (originally a "Divine" song). She won this competiton and again received lots of praise for her performance. When she heard about the auditions for "Brown Sugar", she auditioned straight away and sang "Unfaithful" by Rihanna. Ife was added to the group and is known for the soulful sound of her voice which is heard on numerous tracks on the group's debut album. Ife is also known for setting the harmony for the group.
ChloeChloe Byrne was born on 15th August 1988 to Bitsy Williams and Edwin Byrne . She had an upper-class upbringing and went to a private school. Although having a privileged life, Chloe said
"I don't want anybody to think that I am a snob. I was actually quite a tom-boy and still am. I used to play football with some boys who went to the local (notorious) public school. We had so much fun that money, manners or family didn't matter." . She was born in Castle Combe, England. At the age of 16 she auditioned for a band for "fun" as she did not seriously think that she would be accepted as she had no musical background and had never really done anything musical before. However, to her surprise she was accepted and became a member of "Scrumptious". She was joined in the group by "Tonicha Winans", "Beth Elliot" and future Brown Sugar member "Saffia Saunders". "Scrumptious" split before releasing any material (although they had recored a full album). Chloe and Saffia became close friends and decided to try and audition for a new group. Both of them were successful and became members of "Brown Sugar". Chloe's father died earlier this year in a fatal road accident.
UnaUna Harvey was born on 2nd January 1990 to Maureen and John Harvey. She has 3 older sisters; Caoimhe, Allana and Kiona. She was born in Limerick, Ireland. At the age of 8 year father passed away in a car accident. He left her his guitar and drums in his will. Una made it her duty to learn to play and master these instruments. She used to play the guitar and sing her own songs around clubs. Una has written over 50 songs since she started writing them when she was 16. In school, she was also known for her creative writing and her poetry skills. The english department in her school were amazed by her talent. When Una auditioned for "Brown Sugar" she also showed the panel a few of her songs including her first song that she ever wrote, "Can't Hide It". Una was accepted into the group and "Can't Hide It" was included as a track on their debut album "Chasing Rainbows" and it became the group's first No.1 single. She has 3 cats and 1 dog. She loves scary movies and believes in Paranormal events and the after life. Una has the deepest voice of the group.
SaffiaSaffia Saunders was born on 12th February 1991 to Corrine Henderson and Paul Saunders. She has two older brothers; Callum and David. Saffia had always been intersted in music. Her older brothers used to play drums and they formed a band in school. Saffia's mother, Corinne, has released 3 singles and an album back in 1987. Saffia auditioned for a girl group called "Scrumptious". She became part of the group and met Tonicha Winans, Beth Elliot and future fellow Brown Sugar member Chloe Byrne. "Scrumptious" spilt before releasing material. Chloe and Saffia both auditioned for "Brown Sugar" and were successful in joining. Although Saffia doesn't have the strongest voice in the group she has the highest pitch and her voice can be heard in the higher harmonies in songs. She co-wrote the group's debut single "Don't Wanna Know". Saffia is also known for her great impressions of celebrities and public figures. In 2002, at the age of 11, she learned to play the drums professionally
VictoriaVictoria Black was born 20 February 1992 to Robert Black and Juanita Lopes. She is of Hispanic decent. Victoria was a child model from the ages of 6-13. She is anything but camera shy. Although enjoying the modelling, Victoria knew that she didn't want to do this forever. Her real passion was music. Victoria sang "Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis at the audition for Brown Sugar. The producers were blown away by her performance. They were surprised that a big voice could come from a young and very small lady. Victoria's voice has been compared to Leona Lewis, Mariah Carey, Stephanie Fierce and the members of En Vogue. Victoria and Una are the only girls to get prominent solo parts in every track on the group's debut album. She is the only member of the group that still lives with her parents. She said
"I love my parents so much that I can't bare the thought of leaving them. Even when I'm like 40 years old I'll still be popping round to see them everyday." She has the strongest voice in the group.
