IN THE BOULEVARDAs the lights fade all around, the stadium turns into almost complete silence and as four pounding drum beats begin the whole band is centre stage with exception for lead singer Amy Meyer who as we noticed at the recent IMA’s likes to wait until the music begins playing before she makes her lively entrance onto the stage. As the guitars begin playing from Jason Greenberg and Justin Mullen, suddenly the stage erupts with pyrotechnics and front woman Amy Meyer comes running out from the left of the stage and makes her way to the microphone stand at the very centre of the stage. “HOW’S EVERYBODY DOING TONIGHT!!!!.” she screams out to the audience, “JAPAN!!!! I WANNA HEAR YOUR GO WILD.” and with that, the stadium erupts into huge cheers and Amy begins the vocals to the bands number two hit, Sweet Little Fantasy’s
“She Wears Her Hair Down Low She Walks The Streets Once More She Writes Up Fairytales In Her Head It’s Tragic, Because They Always End Up Dead.”
And as the song moves towards the chorus, Amy decides to bring the crowd into the performance by holding out the microphone stand for the crowd to sing along to the highly recognizable chorus. She screams at the top of her voice.
“She’s Got … Sweet Little Fantasy’s Coming Away With Me Sweet Little Fantasy’s Coming Away With Me
It’s All Just A Game They Play They’ll Play It Until, Your Old And Grey They’ll Mess With Your Head Tonight They’ll Scream Louder, “HOLD ON TIGHT!!!”
And when the song comes towards it end, Amy adds an extra lyric which conveniently sets up the next song. She raises her arm in the air and waves it from side to side, encouraging the crowd to do the same. And she kicks into the final lyric of the song.
“It’s All Just A Game They Play They’ll Play It Until, Your Old And Grey They’ll Mess With Your Head Tonight They’ll Scream Louder, “HOLD ON TIGHT!!!
We‘ll Whisper Hallelujah And Then We Start A Fight.”
Amy stops briefly and encourages the crowd to sing along with her again for a sing-along chorus of Leonard Cohen’s timeless Hallelujah. She steps as close to the edge of the stage as possible and stretches her arm out for the crowd to reach out for her hand and begins singing.
“I've Heard There Was A Secret Chord That David Played And It Pleased The Lord But You don't really care for music, do you? It Goes Like This, The Fourth, The Fifth, The Minor Fall, The Major Lift The Baffled King Composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah.
Your Faith Was Strong But You Needed Proof You Saw Her Bathing On The Roof Her Beauty And The Moonlight Overthrew You She Tied You To A Kitchen Chair She Broke Your Throne And She Cut Your Hair And From Your Lips She Drew The Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah.”
The crowd seem to be revelling in the song choice and sing along with every single part of the song, waving their arms and jumping up and down in unison. The band quickly switch instruments, preferring to use the acoustic guitars for the rest of the performance and it sets up a more sombre mood onstage, Amy takes the microphone once more and introduces the next song, “This is called Mona Lisa Smile.” and they begin playing the soft acoustic song with Amy’s lively vocals being replaced with a softer side.
“She Puts Her Make-up On Like She’s Creating Some Kinda Art She Looks Around For Clothes But She Just Don’t Know Where To Start
She Throws On A Skirt And An Old Yankee’s Sweater Guys Will Fall In Love … Before They Even Met Her She’s The Envy Of Her Peers Because After All These Years … There Ain’t Been No One Like Her Before”
As the song picks up pace, Amy starts walking around the stage rather quickly before jumping up and down for the sing-along chorus with the enthusiasm of a very small child.
“The Girls Wanna Be Her The Guys Wanna See Her If Only For A Little While Just To See Her Mona Lisa Smile
The Girls Wanna Be Her The Guys Wanna See Her If Only For A Little While Just To See Her Mona Lisa Smile”
The song ends with one final drum beat and Amy drops to her knees as the lights dim into almost total darkness, she starts breathing heavily into the microphone before shouting, “TOKYO, NAGOYA, CHIBA, HIROSHIMA, SAPPORO, KOBE, YOKOHAMA, JAPAN!!!” she stops briefly before shouting, “WE FUCKING LOVE YOU!!!!.” and the band thunder their way into the next song, Assassination In A Subway Station.
“Stand Alone In The Underground Heading Home To That Familiar Sound Screaming And Shouting, It’s So Loud This Is Your Life, Don’t … It … Make … You … Proud
No, No, No No, No, No
Throwing Bottles And Empty Glasses Fucked Up On Coke And High On Acid As The Darkness Descends And The Doors Fling Open Here’s To You … Kid, Here’s To Hoping.”
And the song moves onto the chorus with Amy standing on one of the stage amplifiers shouting the chorus at the top of her voice and continuing to swing her arms back and forth, again encouraging the crowd to do the same as she sings.
“It’s An Assassination On A Subway Station Fear And Panic Across The Nation Run Along And Don’t Look Back As The Teardrops Hit The Track
Teardrops Hit The Track Teardrops Hit The Track Run Along Kid, Don’t Look Back Teardrops Hit The Track”
As the song finishes, Amy steps up to the edge of the stage. “This has been an incredible event, I want to thank you all for coming out today and enjoy the rest of the show because right now we’ve gotta go. Don’t forget Japan, We fucking love you.” And with that the band leave the stage.
