'I made a kite out of your period' may go down in history as the greatest line ever written for a song...

-Eric Quillington
Kid Anything- Indie/Britpop/Shoegaze; influenced by Sigur Ros, XXYYXX, Kanye West, Blur, Oasis

(Bringing together an eclectic group of influences, Ulysses' songs are sung with carefree abandon by Nick Junk)

Kurt Ulysses - Songwriter, Guitarist, Backup Vocalist
Nick Junk - Vocals, Mojo

Infinite- Alternative/Experimental Rock; influenced by Muse, Radiohead, and The Beatles

(Known best for their experimental music and their frontman's eccentric behavior, the band disbanded after Eric Quillington's death to pursue solo careers or, in Matt Robert's case, peace of mind. Infinite released four albums over the course of their career; Blue Nebula, Midnight Skies, Insomnia, and Dancing about Architecture.)

Eric Quillington (Deceased) - Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar, Piano, Primary Lyricist
Matt Roberts - Bass
Greg Oldson - Drums, Backup Vocals, Secondary Lyricist
Amelia Florentine - Keyboards, Piano, Lyricist, Backup Vocals

"When asked 'how do you write?' I invariably answer, 'one word at a time', and this answer is invariably dismissed. But that's all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That's all. One stone at a time. But I've read you can see that motherfucker from space without a telescope."

CircusFreak: why thank you Monsieur Qullington. Although "written" might be a strong word, considering how I just said it cos it came to my head there and then. Like I said, period blood, such a versatile substance!

OOC: Fuck... looking at every one else, my chances are dwindling. Ah well. Be darlings!

DTBOTB5
JASON SMITH
CITY OF CAMBRIDGE

Jason hadn’t played a gig of his own for quite a while now. Yes, he had performed at festivals and various ceremonies, but when it came to a bona-fide musical gig, he hadn’t performed in months. And, although it was meant to be a secret, this rooftop gig in his home town of Cambridge meant a lot to him. It was a free, open gig for everyone to see in the middle of the day. Various people gathered to the spot where Jason was due to person and, as they see a rough outline of him, cheer rabidly. Once the equipment is set up, after about 20 minutes of people waiting, a mixture of music fans, metalheads and hipsters from all across East Anglia, Jason raises his hand and sets the crowd in a wild mood again. He then approaches the microphone and reveals his famously buoyant hair, alongside a simple t-shirt and jeans get up.

“Cambridge...” he utters quietly to the delight of everyone. After about 2 minutes of cheering, he speaks again. “Cambridge... it’s been a while. I think it’s time we got together again. Let’s do this. This song is... Two Trees!” The genuine fans go ape shit in delight here, whilst people who just have turned out for the sake of it applaud politely. He starts playing the introduction riff, and it turns out that the city has quite good musical acoustics. Before he starts going into the vocals, he looks down upon his crowd from the roof, and gives a wave. It turns out that there are cameras on top of the roof and that screens are then put across some buildings so that fans could see what Jason was doing. Turns out that, at this point, what he was doing was being a prat, hopping around the building top and gyrating. He then looks into the camera and sticks his tongue out. Once the vocals actually come in, another cheer erupts from the audience, which causes Jason to laugh. He then gets back into the flow and goes throughout the song.

Two trees, but one is taller than the other,
Light now, then shade will soon blow its cover,
And the minerals, that rest in the ground for them to devour...
And they will.

Two timed, the bastard pro-creates,
More lies, when friendship turns to hate,
Conformity, we don’t want to go down,
Simply.

Freedom, I’m free now,
I’m free now, freedom.
Freedom sings out loud...

Two trees, can you now follow me?
Right here, lay the invisible bodies,
Ghosts are waiting to take you away,
And they will.

When it comes to the heavy, djenty part, the more “kvlt” of the audience start headbanging in sync, alongside Jason. The finale of the song causes a mosh to ensue and a circle pit also.

The roots are bloodied,
We are thirsty,
So hungry,
Time to feed...

Now, bring me down.
I dare you, bring me down.
This tree, no longer,
In conformity,
So bring me down.

Now, bring me down. (Save me, please)
I dare you, bring me down. (No longer I need)
This tree, no longer, (Two trees)
In conformity, (Resting in me)
So bring me down.

Bring it down! (Save the world)
Bring it down! (You know you want to)
Bring it down! (Holy Father)
Bring it down! (Is resting)
Bring it down! (These two trees)
Bring it down! (Remain bloodthirsty)
Bring it down! (Offer yourself)
Bring it down! (To these leaves)

The police soon sort this out and realise that they may have a difficult job this afternoon. Jason politely asks them to abide the rules, to no avail. Ah well, he thinks, as long as I’m allowed to keep performing.

So much for the health kick.

“Oh wow... I forgot how much I loved that... anyway, next song! I don’t care if you’re just passing by; my voice is louder than yours, so LET’S DO THIS! This is Frown Upon!” The drummer continuously hits a hi-hat quietly to get a beat going, as Jason begins playing the weird, spacious riff on his guitar, to the delight of everyone. The song eventually bursts into its true colours and Jason prances about the roof top, with an amazing amount of energy. He barely reaches the microphone to get the first words but manages to do so and is still able to sing them perfectly in tune, despite running about the stage for a while and this being a live environment. Since it’s a single and it’s quite well known, a lot of the crowd are able to sing along with this one.

This time I go into a new life,
Thinking about the ones before,
Karma, religion, it’s all true, I guess,
Since I can now experience it first hand.

I don’t care if you sing my words,
I won’t lie if you bounce along,
I seriously couldn’t care less,
About anyone other than myself.

Not anymore,
I can’t feel,
I won’t feel,

On the “this life is love inside my head” line, he lets the audience sing it, and they do loudly and in perfect harmony. So when it comes to the doomy riff, both the audience and Jason are brimming with momentum and adrenaline.

One who has lived life in vanity,
Must take pride in their demise too,
No hyperbole or hypocrisy.
You chose to die, in the end.

I need more now,
Just one more fix,
Then I swear I’ll be done.

Even at the time that the pebbles are being counted out, be not frightened; tell no lies; and fear not the Lord of Death.

Jason cheers outside of the microphone and raises his hands at the end of the song (alongside a bottle of alcohol, clearly. What a lovely chap).

UserPostedImage

After about five minutes of talking to organisers and the police, whilst letting the crowd cool down a bit, Jason declares “One more song guys!” to the crowd, who then start to let out a small cheer again, whilst the others get prepared. “Alright then ladies and gentlemen... I think it’s time to... party.” He then plays an unknown riff on the guitar, although a couple of people know the song after a few seconds. There is a backing track from the original song as well. We like to party... we like-we like to party... it then goes out of the beginning and into the proper song and everyone bounces up and down and starts faux-raving. Jason starts singing We Like to Party! by the Vengaboys in a high voice, one that he has rarely shown before in quite this style. If you were looking away, he could have been a female.

I've got something to tell ya,
I've got news for you,
Gonna put some wheels in motion,
Get ready 'cause we're coming through,
Hey now, hey now, hear what I say now,
Happiness is just around the corner,
Hey now, hey now, hear what I say now,
We'll be there for you.

The whole song is sending everyone into the frenzy and it is truly a glorious day from this point onwards. People start dancing together, singing along and being reminded of their collective youths.

The Vengabus is coming,
And everybody's jumping,
New York to San Francisco,
An intercity disco,
The wheels of steel are turning,
And traffic lights are burning,
So if you like to party,
Get on and move your body!

At the end of the song, there is a big band finish for about a minute, before Jason reaches out to the crowd and waves with both of his hands before throwing his plectrum and hair band in his pocket out to the crowd to keep as memorabilia. “This is why I love Cambridge so much... you guys are the best crowd in the world. Thank you, and I’m glad to call this place my home.” He says emotionally, before handing his guitar over to a roadie and walking down the stairs through the building and coming out of the other side, so that no crowds mob him.

Thus, daily life once again processes. Although lots of work has been avoided by people caught up in the mayhem, there is a general concession that this was a massive success. It has brought Jason Smith back into the households of the people of Cambridge and has given many more people another opportunity to get into his music. This has been one of his most important gis for a very long time and will go down in the history of the city.

Setlist:

Two Trees
Frown Upon
We Like to Party! (Vengaboys)

Awards (stroking myself and thinking I'm superior):
@Chaos awards:
Best Band - Mind
Best Album - Shattered Fairytale by Mind
Technical Ecstasy - Jason Smith (x3)

OOC : Yup, anytime until Sunday inclusive, though it's best to get them done earlier. Voting groups are announced at midnight. (I know full well that I should get on with mine. Also, after running and taking part in all five battles, this is the first ever time where I think I'm not going to survive the first round. The standard is extremely high.)

Lucifer

Lucifer is sat on a chair in a comfy looking studio when the camera turns on and is looking at him. “On, yeah?” he says to the man holding it. The man obviously nods or gestures yes to him as he then nods and replies; “sound.”

He looks down into the camera and says; “Safe. I am Lucifer; I do some drum & bass, rap, grime type stuff. I released my debut mixtape not that long ago; it was called My Streets. I think it represents who I am quite well at this point in time. So if you wanna download that, it is available on iTunes now. Okay then, follow me over to where I’m gonna be performing for you then and we can get underway.”

He gets up and walks over to an almost stage like area with a set of DJ decks on it. He stands behind the decks and says, “Well today I am gonna perform a live mix for you guys; whilst of course doing my rapping over the top of it – you get me?” He checks to see if the decks are turned on and then rolls his shoulders. “So first up is my first single, Hoods Up, Heads Down, which actually did bare good on the Top 20 Charts thing, which was a massive shocker – ennit.”

He presses a button on the programming machine and a tidy drumbeat kicks out of the speakers; it is quick and occasionally has a few symbols in it. He presses the loop button so that it will continue throughout the track. Lucifer presses a button which makes a smashing noise, and then he starts his vocals.

“Yeah,
Hoods up, heads down,
See me and they gather ‘round,”

Then he flicks a switch up which increases the level of the bass, making the track louder and more powerful.

“They know that I’m trouble,
Always here on the double,
Got my pain, know what’s right,
Feeling the hate, up for a fight,
Don’t fucking tempt me blud,
You won’t like what’s under the hood.”

At this point he switches the drum loop to one which involves a lot more symbols and crashes.

“Hoods up, heads down,
Shake ‘em off all over town,
Take down yours and I’ll take mine,
What the fuck? You won’t take time,
I’d have you mate, don’t forget it,
Don’t try me boy, or you’ll regret it,
You hit the ground, down and out,
You didn’t have the time to fucking shout.”

Now he does a bit of scratching on the decks, adding in a few sounds here and there with the beat still going crazy.

“Fuck off mate!

Hoods up, heads down; bitch.”

The track ends with a massive banging sound and a breaking glass effect. Lucifer pulls his hood down and wipes his forehead on the sleeve of his hoody. Lucifer puts an almost African sounding drumbeat on now, with a whistling sound coming from the speakers. This track’s beat is incredibly fast and Lucifer sound as if he is freestyling over the top of it. The music is very electronic sounding, not sounding as if it could be played by a live band. The beat drops and this is when the traditional Dubstep ‘Whaaa’ sounds come into play. The track lasts about 7 minutes and leaves Lucifer with very little breath left at the end of it.

“Well that is all I have time for you guys today… I need to be somewhere, so there you go – I am Lucifer.”

Remember, vote on all three, putting the best in your opinion at the top of each list, the worst in your opinion (or fifth best!) at the bottom, and 2nd, 3rd, 4th inbetween. Being as we're down to 15, the groups are of five. ((OOC : Taylor. But it still works.)) You can vote from now until midnight on Sunday. If you haven't yet, you can still send a tape in until then. Three bands, one from each group, will be leaving the competition.
Thanks in advance for your co-operation,

OOC: This is cancelled? The title is confusing me. Either way, I need to do more with Liars and Thieves so I'll post mine.

Liars and Thieves - Live at the Corner of Main and Cataract

A car starts. Bird chirp. Guitars are tuned. The scene takes shape on main street of a small Connecticut town. The camera closes in on three guys standing on a street corner. One of them takes their place on a drumset. The other two switch on their amps. One of them walks up to the mic. "We are Liars and Thieves. I am Andy. To my left on the guitar is Ian. Back there on the drums is my brother Mike. While other bands in this competition have played stadiums, were proudly playing the corner of Main and Cataract st. This first song is called Sleeping Wont Wait". Immediately Ian begin playing a loud distorted riff. The drums steadily join in, and Andy supplies some much needed bass. The vocals start fast to the point where lesser singers would easily find themselves tongue tied. The vocals slow down for the chorus because otherwise Andy would probably stop breathing. The chorus goes:

We could do it in the car
We dont have to go home now
Because wherever you are
I can always be with you
Yea, we can go so far
I will always be with you
We can feel what we want
When we do it in the car

The camera turns to briefly show a small crowd of locals staring open mouthed at Liars and Thieves, obviously slightly shocked that the quiet town has been subjected to hearing every sinister desire of Andy Hardaway's. The song ends with a howling yell that could be heard all the way down at the local diner. By now a nice crowd had formed. Not all of them were discussing what way was best to make the band leave. Some of them, mostly kids who happened to be out on the town, were enjoying the show. Because of the crowd, Andy decided the appropriate song to play. "We're going to do a cover. I expect to hear all of you singing along. This song is called Teenagers and it's by a band called My Chemical Romance,".

UserPostedImage

A small portion of the crowd joins in. Most, however are confused and don't know what to think. Andy conducts on the last chorus which is played only with a steady bass drum keeping the beat. Then Ian plays an improvised guitar solo to finish the song. "Back on Long Island, where we live, we played a show with a few other bands. They all went up and didn't play a single cover or a single good song. we played a set of a few originals, but mostly covers. We were gonna do one more original, but as I look out at this crowd there is only one song that comes to mind as one we should play, and it was written by a band called Brand New. This last song is called Soco Amaretto Lime,". There are cheers amongst some in the crowd who know the song. The rest are busy in debate as to whether or not they should call the local police. Andy puts down his bass, and Ian grabs an acoustic guitar. The song begins...

"Passed out on the overpass
Sunday best and broken glass
Broken down from the bikes and bars
Suspended like spirits over speeding cars
You and me were kings over the parkway tonight
And tonight will go on forever while we
walk around this town like we own the streets
and stay awake through summer like we own the heat
Singing "everybody wake up (wake up) it's time to get down"
(everybody, everybody wake up its time to get down)
And when I pass the bottle back to Pete
on the overpass tonight, I bet we laugh

I'm gonna stay eighteen forever (cut me open)
So we can stay like this forever (sun poisoned)
And we'll never miss a party (this offer...)
cause we keep them going constantly (...stands forever)
And we'll never have to listen (new haircut)
to anyone about anything (new bracelet)
cause it's all been done and it's all been said (eyeliner)
we're the coolest kids and we take what we can get

The hell out of this town
Find some conversation
The low fuel lights been on for days
It doesn't mean anything
I've got another 500, 'nother 500 miles
before we shut this engine down,
we shut it down

I'm gonna stay eighteen forever (cut me open)
So we can stay like this forever (sun poisoned)
And we'll never miss a party (this offer...)
cause we keep them going constantly (...stands forever)
And we'll never have to listen (new haircut)
to anyone about anything (new bracelet)
cause it's all been done and it's all been said (eyeliner)
we're the coolest kids and we take what we can get (wait forever)

(you're just jealous cause I'm young and in love)
Eighteen forever (first kisses)
(your stomach's filled up but you're starved for conversation)
So we can stay like this forever (new stitches)
(you're spending all your nights growing old in your bed)
And we'll never miss a party (collar weekend)
(and your tearin up your photos cause you wanna forget... it's over)
cause we keep them going constantly (appearance ticket)
(you're just jealous cause I'm young and in love)
And we'll never have to listen (November to...)
(your stomach's filled up but you're starved for conversation)
to anyone about anything cause it's all been done (...remember)
(you're spending all your nights growing old in your bed)
and it's all been said (nightswimmers)
(and your tearin up your photos cause you wanna forget... it's over)
we're the coolest kids and we take what we can get

Just jealous cause we're young and in love "

"Thank you all for listening to us. We are Liars and Thieves, and you have been a great audience. I can see that some of you want us to stop so were gonna head home."

OOC : Maybe 'postponed' would be a better word than 'cancelled'. The matriarch of BOTB has been struck down with the dreaded lurgy and is taking a break from RP duties. Maybe I'll start it up when I'm over the fever (hopefully very soon, give me a few days to recover, I'm better than I was), using the same participants; I don't want all this to go to waste. I'll give you less time to perform, redo the groups, and the option of either using this or making a new one.
Thanks for understanding assuming you did,
-bikz.
(PS. Always something goes wrong with the odd-numbered battles. First one fell apart because one of the frontrunners died, second one was won by fAthOm, third one fell apart because the forum broke down, fourth one was won by Blood of Wecz, fifth one - is taking a short break and that will be the only issue.)
