MattY and Eric Quillington - Lazarus, Live and almost acoustic
MattY and Eric are both sat on stools on the stage. MattY has a keyboard in front of him, whereas Eric is holding a guitar. Both of them have a microphone in front of them too. MattY taps the mic to make sure it is working and then speaks into it; “Yo, this working?” He looks off the stage to see, he then nods at Eric. “Okay, this is a quick live set then; today we are doing a live almost acoustic version of mine and Eric’s new song Lazarus which is out on the 15th of May. This live version will be a B-side as well as a Dubstep remix by some underground guys that I have heard of. Well, that is if they are as good as everyone says they are…” MattY quickly plays a few notes on the keyboard and then stops to press a few buttons on the top of it, he then plays the same few notes again and smiles. “Right, Eric Quillington, are you ready my friend?”
Eric hasn’t yet spoken, which is unlike him,“ Indubitably, good sir, are you? ” MattY smiles and nods, prompting Eric to continue, “Fantastic! To quote the Beatles; One, two, three, FAW!"
A look of concentration comes across MattY’s face as he plays a simple sounding riff on the keyboard; as Eric takes his first strum on the guitar the riff becomes far more complex, with notes coming from both ends of the spectrum. Eric does not have a lot to do on his guitar for now; he just sits there playing his steady tune. Eric then leans closer to the microphone to begin the song.
Eric’s voice echoes around the room, helping to create an eerie effect that was wanted for the song; the lyrics are cold and dark, and help to emphasise the idea behind the song – revenge. The keyboard riff ends just as Eric stops singing, MattY starts to play a few simple chords, which help to slow the song right down. MattY’s mic is right by his face as he starts to rap. Compared to MattY’s usual rapping style, this is very slow and meaningful – it almost suggests that darker things are to come from MattY; but that message isn’t entirely clear.
The verse comes to a close and MattY lifts the pace of his keyboard playing, as well as upping it an octave; Eric’s soft, loud vocals contradict MattY’s harsh, quiet rapping for this song; and they help to lift the song a bit. Eric’s chorus ends as MattY stops playing the keyboard altogether. Eric now stands up to play an incredible guitar riff – it is fast and sharp with an incredibly powerful feeling to it.
MattY presses a few chords whilst pressing the loop keys; so now he does not have to play the same chord over and over, he gets up and picks up a guitar that was lying next to him. He now starts to play a fast tune while moving up to a microphone which is standing waiting for him. Now Eric hits a long hard note while MattY starts to rap underneath it; he has now picked up the pace of his rapping, but still making sure that every syllable is understandable.
Eric starts to sing the chorus again while MattY’s guitar playing quickens; the two guitars are playing at different pitches, helping to create a sense of unease. Both guitars slow down and grind to a halt, while the keyboard continues to play the loop; Eric speaks the chorus and as it comes to a close both guitars kick back in. Eric starts to sing the chorus again, while MattY quickly blasts out a few lines. He stops playing the guitar and sits back down at the keyboard; turning off the loop. Eric stops singing and stops playing his guitar too while MattY ends the song with the riff he played to introduce it.
MattY nods, “That was Lazarus! The real version is a lot more electronic than this; and this will not be on the album. If you want this, you can download it on the single package, which like I said earlier includes the album version as well as possibly a Dubstep version. Thank you and goodbye!”
