I hate the other way around. My mate is just some huge Apple detractor for no reason...no matter how many things they ever do right, or how impressive their new gadgets are, this boy has no respect for them, and refuses to acknowledge them. The second they make a mistake (eg, iphone 4 antenna) he's all over it, loving it, almost hard for it.
However, he's also a Sony "fanboy", and despite the PSN being down for 3 weeks, sony losing everyone's credit card details, and generally "fooking up", he says it's "not their fault". I can only imagine his reaction if Apple did the same.
He does sound a little bit of a fanboy, but here's the thing:
10 years ago, Microsoft was the king and plenty of people, myself included were all "microsoft is evil, blah blah blah" because they were an easy target. I laughed when Microsoft decided to put out a console, thinking how could that ever work, Microsoft make software and mice... Mostly I just thought they had no right to burst into the scene with a product that was basically just a low-spec PC you plug into a TV. Low and behold, that model has served them pretty well and I think Microsoft make the best current gen console experience. They've been through a rough patch with Windows, but now they're back on form. So fair enough. I hold no grudge.
Now look at Apple, iPod, iPhone, iPad, iTunes, App Store... Their business model is super closed systems, which coupled with their monopoly in all those areas means if you want an mp3 player today, the iPod is almost the only viable choice. And if you have an iPod, you need to use iTunes. And if you're using iTunes, why not buy music from the iTunes Store... etc. The other horrible aspect of their business model is that they release new versions of their hardware with very little notice, and there's no trade-up option. You can walk into a store, walk out with a brand new iPhone, then the next day, all those iPhones are gone, replaced with the new fancier model, for the same price. But then it turns out when you get a partial refund and get the new model, it no longer has a particular port you used all the time previously. Apple hardware is obsolete in six months to a year, and they basically stop developing for their old hardware as soon as the new one is out.
So yeah, I think people have a viable reason to hate Apple. But as much as it's down to how Apple run their business, it's just as much down to the patronising misinformed nauseatingly smug bullshit Apple zealots tend to spew in all directions (Not you of course).
