It's been almost 3 years since Lily has been in the music industry. Her first appearance was with her former band, Screaming in Silence. Controversy over why the band broke up is still being debated today. Today, Lily is one of the most recognizable and talented faces in the music business. This is her first interview that she has opened up about everything; from family, the band life, her disorder, music, and more.

Jody Rosen: Good Morning Lily, how are you today?

Lily: I’m hanging in there, just another day.

Jody Rosen: So you said you were recording, can you tell me some more about it?

Lily: Well i’m working on a song with Taylor Asbridge and i’ve been trying to write and then record it in about two days which is very crazy to do but i know i can do it.

Jody Rosen: Ok then good luck with recording. Now, i’d like to talk about your childhood life. What were you like as a child growing up?

Lily: This may come as a shock but as a child i was really shy and quiet. I never talked to anyone unless they talked to me first. I was kind of afraid of getting to know people and i was in a comfort zone with people i already knew.

Jody Rosen: Now, is it true that you have a disorder?

Lily: Yes, i have OCD. It's nothing i can't handle im just a super neat and analytical person. It takes me longer to do simple things like read a book or clean something because i have to do it a certain way. I also have rituals that i do everyday like i have to touch a door frame before i leave and enter it, or i have to tap something before i use it. It's just something i've dealt with since i was a kid.

Jody Rosen: Tell me about your family.

Lily: I was an only child and i lived with my mother in New York. She always told me that i was definitely not planned and i was the result of a one night stand. After i was born my mother and father tried to raise me together but they just couldn’t get along so when i was two he left. She never talked about him after that so i don’t really mention him either.

Jody Rosen: How would you describe your teenage years?

Lily: I was having fun. I met Ben, Cash, and Eli when i was 14 in Detroit after we had moved so my mother could find work. They were everything to me. I probably cared about them more than anything else.

Jody Rosen: Would you blame them for your relationship with your mother?

Lily: That’s a harsh question there, Jody. (Smiles) Back then, i did. Now? I don’t. I look back and they never forced me to do anything it was all me. She always worked and never had time for me so i turned to my friends who were there.

Jody Rosen: Would you try to reconnect with your mother now?

Lily: I don’t know. It wouldn’t make up for anything we’ve been through. I wouldn’t wanna try to repair it just because, you know?

Jody Rosen: So how did you guys come up with the name Screaming in Silence?

Lily: Very cheesy way but we were like hey we are all suffering somehow in a way and we can’t do anything about it so each day we’re silently screaming inside and we thought screaming in silence and....yeah. We were 15, not much creativity going on there.

Jody Rosen: How did your mother take you being in a band?

Lily: She HATED it. She thought it wasn’t very ‘lady-like’ for me to be in a band with a bunch of guys singing about hate and pain and you know? She was trying to keep me away from them but i wouldn’t stop. She finally had enough and i ran away and went to live with them.

Jody Rosen: Had you ever thought about being in a band?

Lily: I always wanted to start solo but i thought being in a band might increase my chances of getting discovered plus they were there to help me so i didn’t mind.

Jody Rosen: So you guys finally got signed in 2009?

Lily: Yup to Hot Eye Records. It was the highlight of our lives. We were like finally our hard worked has paid off.

Jody Rosen: So you guys recorded and performed together, how was the atmosphere? Did anything change?

Lily: We were like family. We joked around alot acting like the kids we were inside. (Laughs) It’s a wonder people took us seriously. We were almost inseparable.

Jody Rosen: So what happened?

Lily: Fame. It got to them, hard. Soon we had the ego’s in the band and i admit i had a huge one. I thought im the lead singer, i’m the one doing all the work so you guys should just follow me. Everyone thought they should be able to outshine the other. They were fighting over who got paid more and it wasn’t fun anymore. Now it was all about the money and not the actual love for music i knew we had. We all just got sick of each other and knew someone had to leave or we just had to break up.

Jody Rosen: Did you leave?

Lily: I’m a solo artist today aren’t i? My ego got me this far and it’s gonna carry me for a long time until i get dropped. (Smiles)

Jody Rosen: You recently released your debut album, Raw. What kind of music inspired it?

Lily: I’ve always had a thing for Opera music so you can definitely hear that influence. Mostly just rock and metal, a little screamo, something for all my fans.

Jody Rosen: Why did you chose Raw as your album name?

Lily: The album is filled with pure, raw emotion. There’s no hidden tricks or meanings it’s just how i feel, point, blank, period. It’s my talent being exposed for the first time as a solo artist.

Jody Rosen: What made you decide to become a musician?

Lily: I knew i could write songs and i had a talent in singing so why waste good talent? I know some songs that have gotten me through some tough times so maybe i could do that for someone else.

Jody Rosen: Who are your current favorite artists?

Lily: I really love Riot! In the Boulevard. Amy is a phenomenal singer and the band sounds wonderful. Glamazon is an amazing writer. I love the way she writes such interesting things and makes it come to life. I’ve always been a fan of Dead Roses, they are some legends and The Rockers are also one of my heroes. (Smiles) Brandon Caulfield is an amazing artist. Alot of people would go on to say ‘Oh Stephanie Fierce is my inspiration’ or ‘Miss Vanity is my hero’. I think people get hyped up over artists and just ignore the other good talent out there who aren’t as commercialized as them.

Jody Rosen: Do you think you will be ignored?

Lily: I have a loud damn voice, you can’t ignore me. (Laughs) I don’t want people to just stay focused on me and ignore the other amazing talent out there. Being ignored is like being insulted.

Jody Rosen: Who would you most likely want to work with in the future?

Lily: The five artists i just named. Hell, if i could work with them, i’d be set for the rest of my career until someone else catches my eye.

Part two of this interview will be released tomorrow!

Amy: I gotta apologize to Callum because I'm just so in love with Lily. I had the exact same awkwardness and shyness when I was younger, so that just makes me love you more because I can relate to that. I could go on and on about how amazing you are, but I don't wanna sound like some screaming fangirl. But yeah, your amazing, I just love you and I can't wait for Part 2. :)

Stephanie Fierce: I read "Rolling Stone" on a monthly basis, because I always find it interesting how artist say certain things, when they land their first cover issue. Things that they will regret in the future especially.......

We all feel a certain way about things, but we tend to tweek things a little last minute when we say them. Why do we do that? I think we do that out of perverseness. Which is a sick thing.

It seems to me like you want to play the victim for people to feel sorry for you. Sad thing is that you probably are so caught up in the moment, that you don't realize it. And I'm not talking about you exposing your disorder. I'm talking about your views and playing the victim to build yourself up. But hey....... that invisible marketing strategy works on many people, so I don't blame you in a way.

I always wonder, why artist say that certain artists deserve more attention? If those artist got the same attention and the others didn't, Wouldn't it be the same thing? Think about that..... You wouldn't be saying that, if you make it big. It's a freaking cycle.

You are right. I am commercialized. I am commercialized by the media. Which is different than being commercialized by your record label. I don't ever sit around and be like, what market would like this song? What can I do to make this songs likable by many? Will this song sell? I did that my first album, but that benefited me in the sense, that I was exposed to many people and It allowed me to bite back in a bigger way.

There's probably a lot you don't know about me and my mission to get to where I am today. Maybe that just inspires people. I don't believe they are ignoring others for saying that. I believe that they're just showing gratitude to THEIR favorite music "inspirations". Everyone has their music idols and is not like they are speaking for everyone. Mine are pretty distant from yours, but that's fine.

I've already established myself with a fan base. But as I said, to get there, it wasn't easy. Especially when you have people making fake articles about you and successfully getting them published. I have a list of things people did to me just cause they hated me. Did that break me? No. However, eventually you go through things in life and people grow tire of you. Which is why I believe I will be dying in the airwaves, eventually.

This feeling that I'm experiencing right now, is almost like having a mid life crisis, but with my career. Which is why I feel like I need to break free. We all don't last forever. But we cannot be prisoned by these thoughts. Being in the industry so long,
Once again, I just kind of figured how people work, and why they say the things they say. It's all invisible marketing. Building a persona for yourself. For the sake of being liked by certain people. People who won't care about you in the future. It's like falling for a cult of some sort. My new album talks about breaking away from those people who hold you down, with their bullshit and breaking FREE.

I really hope your not a victim of this, like I was.

On the other hand I really find you interesting and we have a lot in common and I see a lot of ME in you, whether you believe it or not. Good luck with everything you have going on and I only wish success for you.

Lily: Im sorry you wasted your time writing that because it doesn't apply to me at all. I am not playing a victim and trying to get anyone to feel sorry for me. I am not building a persona of myself, i am being myself. Who are you to tell me if im being real or not?

On the other hand, thanks for the compliments.

Miss Vanity: If me and Stephanie Fierce are looked at as an inspiration or a hero to anyone, it's because we've worked damn hard to get where we are, not because other talent simply isn't being recognised. Thank you.

Rolling Stone Interview cont. (Part 2)

UserPostedImage

Jody Rosen: What kind of experiences do you use as a songwriter?

Lily: I used things that have happened in my life, things that i’ve seen happen to other people, and things that i think about all the time. Sometimes i like my songs to tell stories which may or may have a moral.

Jody Rosen: What can we expect from your future releases?

Lily: You can expect different shades of Lily. There may be more of a soft side, and there may be more of a bitchy side; you just never know what to expect. I can tell you that my next single is definitely a softer side.

Jody Rosen: Can you tell us about the next single you’re going to release?

Lily: It’s called Another Day is Over and it’s a beautiful song about, well whatever you want it to be about really. You can relate it to many different things.

Jody Rosen: So we haven’t heard any tour dates from you, when will you be touring?

Lily: I will be touring in the summer during June, July, and a little in August. The dates and locations will be released later on.

Jody Rosen: Any special guests touring with you?

Lily: Well, you’ll just have to wait until i release all the information. (Smiles)

Jody Rosen: Is Lily dating or seeing anyone these days?

Lily: Nah, Lily is on her own these days. I never really looked for anyone to date. Some guys have said i was intimidating but i think i'm just fine. I'm interested to see who i'll attract. (Laughs) Might be some serial killers or psychos, who knows?

Jody Rosen: So now i have some questions sent in by some fans just for you. Ashley from Texas wrote; Where do you see yourself in five years?

Lily: I see myself still in the music industry and writing. Hopefully i’ll be on my 6th or 7th album, maybe married and with a family but i won’t plan it. Things change so i can’t really tell. (Laughs)

Jody Rosen: Luke from Arizona asks; How good do you consider yourself to be?

Lily: I mean i’m good. There’s no sugar coating it. I have some kick ass vocals, i can play the piano, i can control my breathing when singing, I write all of my songs, i am just that damn good. I would say on a scale of The Doors and The Beatles, im like Led Zepplin.

Jody Rosen: Jackson from Detroit asks; What is your biggest dream in your career?

Lily: My biggest dream is to the top female artist. Not in Rock but in the freakin universe. I wanna be bigger than Celine Dion. (Laughs) Or Oprah.

Jody Rosen: Taylor from Miami asks; Should people be afraid of you?

Lily: You know i get asked that alot and i really don’t care if people are or are not. My purpose in life wasn’t to go around making people fear me, it’s to make music and if i have to be a bitch to get my point across then so be it. I think its what i do best. (Smiles)

Jody Rosen: Salina from North Dakota asks; If you could sing with anyone living or dead who would it be?

Lily: Marilyn Manson. Future husband. It will happen someday.

Jody Rosen: And last question from Audrina in Nevada; Do the voices in your head bother you?

Lily: I don’t listen to to them. My voice told me not to slap my gym teacher in 8th grade. Totally did it. (Laughs) No im kidding, my voices talk to me and they understand. There’s only 2 voices in my life; Lily and God.

Jody Rosen: Well thank you for this wonderful interview. Good luck with your future endeavors and try to listen to those voices, ok? (Smiles then laughs)

Lily: I try. (Smiles)

Ryan Ross Hernandez: "When you're on your first cover of Rolling Stone, I feel as though people try to come off a certain way. When I did my first Rolling Stone interview I went for being witty and savvy, and just prove that I had this music dictionary in my head. Admittedly with a hint of douchebaggery. I'm really hoping that you were trying to come off as funny or be sarcastic for some of your answers. If you weren't, I'm sorry, but you aren't going to survive with that certain attitude in this industry. Believe me, I've tried it myself."
