I get really protective about topics like these. One of my closest friends is gay, another I can tell is probably closeted, and is afraid to admit it, and I have several other good friends whom are either gay or bisexual. I myself, although I have never been attracted to men, consider myself open to be bisexual simply because I have nothing against homosexuality. I get angry at the stupid stuff people can say about gays, mentally ill people, family tragedies, diseases like cancer, aids, and hepatitis B (nobody even realizes how big the latter really has become). It just frightens me sometimes. I guess that's one of the major reasons why I hate republicans, especially the complete right-wing nut jobs like Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, and Glenn Beck...Then again, I really don't like American politics at all.
Anyways, what are your thoughts? Do you think people can be born gay? I personally don't because you aren't just born into the idea of being aroused by your own sex...you were just born. I understand where people who believe that people are born gay are coming from, that whole "people are bound to go where fate leads them to". I don't believe that. I hope I don't offend anyone who does, but I don't. Besides, most people use this excuse to make it seem "ok" to be gay. They feel that if they say they were "born into" being gay, then it's better than taking into practice on their own. That's like saying you were born racist. It's all about the upbringing and the surroundings that determine who you are during your childhood to become whatever you end up becoming as an adult. If a boy hang around in places that are considered "girly" as a kid for example, then the boy would get a different experience than a boy who would participate on a little league baseball team that is stereotypically all-boys. Feel free to attack my previous statement if you feel I am wrong. |

When you are a baby you obviously don't think about liking your same gender or not. It's when we start school and have relationship with other people that we start 'oh, that boy is cute' and those times when we 'date' someone when we are kids but the only thing we do is hold hands. I don't believe a boy that hangs around girly places will be gay. I have a girl friend that grew up all pinky, playing with her barbies and doing all girly shit and is a full lesbian. It means nothing. But yes, it's not a choice we make, we just feel attracted to people of the same gender. Nobody chooses to suffer prejudice and all that kind of thing that gays still suffer in our society. I can say for myself, when I started to feel attracted to girls I panicked, I didn't want to be a lesbian, I wanted to fit the whole straight thing, but it comes a time when you have to accept yourself in order to be happy. |

I watched an interesting programme with John Barrowman once and apparently, you are born gay. I don't know though. I don't even know my own sexuality yet, I mean, I think I'm straight, but there have been times...
Personally, I think your upbringing and environment do have certain roles to play, it's just their significance of which I don't know. |

I dont think you can be "born gay" but I do think you are sort of "destined" to be what ever you will be. It's a choice, but not really one you get to make. Either way, what does it matter if you are or not? |

I think it's a path of least resistance thing. You're not born "gay" as such, but some naturally tend towards it. I think it's hard to put it down to nature or nurture, it's probably a bit of both.
As a sidenote, I've said it before and I'll say it again: homosexuality is a solution to overpopulation. If let's say one in every five people in the whole world was born gay, and they didn't have children of their own, and perhaps adopted a child instead, the world's population would stabilise at a far healthier figure, improving quality of life for all, and you wouldn't even need to resort to EVIL SOCIALISM. But then again the people who need convincing are probably to busy readying themselves for the return of Jesus to think in practical terms. |

Hey, I'm one of the most christian people here and I have no problem with Gay people. My reasoning for not accepting gay-ness as a solution to over population is simply because I personally am not gay and find the idea of being in that situation rather disgusting and the idea of people becoming gay just to help the world is an idiotic notion. |

Overpopulation being solved by homosexuality is a stupid idea. Why don't couples just stop having kids? Why don't sex offenders just stop raping innocent young girls who might probably end up getting pregnant? People aren't going to just stop, and change, especially turning gay. You can't force people into choosing who to be sexually attracted which, is the same struggle amongst LGBT members and the conservatives. |

I agree with Gildy, if I'm honest. And I'm pretty sure it's heavily down to being born that way, and growing up and influence dictate exactly how open you are about it. That's why you get ragingly camp people, and then on the other hand, people who seem straight as an arrow. |

I'm not saying we should enforce homosexuality, it's a hypothetical. If more people were naturally gay, and by extension if homosexuality were better accepted in places such as the Indian subcontinent and in Africa, less children would be born. Nobody should be forced to be gay, but just as a practical example, there are plenty of folks who are really gay who pretend to be straight, who raise families and live unhappy lives in the closet, for the sake of social stigma. If there were no prejudice, surely that would happen far less. |

I do believe that it may help the population crisis, especially in countries such as India, the democratic republic of the congo, china, and most certainly Bangladesh (the country is about the size of england, and has a population greater than that of Russia). Honestly, I don't think it would be possible to lower to social awkwardness of being labelled "gay" to that great extent of lowering the human population. The population is always going to increase, even if we do slow it down. I just don't believe we will reach that state of comfort where everything is up in the air, at least not in the near future. There are strives at improvements, and most have been successful, especially right now, with Brazil being open to gay marriage. I still don't think that has really helped motivate gay people enough to be more open. I think it had a greater effect on the people who were strong enough to admit they're gay live a normal life. |
