MattY at the Chaos Awards II

MattY steps onto the stage with nothing but a guitar; a keyboard and drum machine is already waiting for him.  He has a head-mic which is easier as he can now move about the stage while also using his guitar.  He stops behind the keyboard and then starts to talk; “Hey!  Chaos!  I am gonna do a ‘solo-band’ type set tonight!  I have my trusty keyboard, my guitar, and of course my drum machine here with my tonight.  I have decided I am gonna give you a sneak peak of a track from the album.  This one is called The Moment – I apologise in advance, as I actually do a little bit of ‘singing’ – well I like to think it is singing, but it is probably more like a cat dying.  So here is The Moment.”

MattY does a short talked introduction on the song, over a quiet keyboard riff.  He stops with his vocals as the keyboard gets louder.  He presses a button which gets the keyboard to do a loop.  Now he spins his guitar round to the front and starts to play a simple guitar rhythm while he steps forward and starts to sing the chorus.  His singing voice is not terrible; it is quite husky with an aura of calmness about it.  It is quite deep and very controlled.

The chorus comes to an end and MattY quickly flicks a switch on the drum machine to get a drum beat going.  Now the song has three different instruments going as well as MattY’s vocals.  He slides from his husky singing voice into his harsh rapping voice very smoothly, making an instant transition.  His flow is just as fast and sharp as usual, giving the required effect.

The drums speed up and the guitar quickens as the next chorus approaches.  He stands at the front of the stage and belts out a chorus.  This is incredibly surprising as MattY has never even tried to sing at a live show, and this could really have been a bad time to screw up – at an awards show where he is nominated for Best Male Solo Artist!  His voice is surprisingly strong considering he never uses it like this, and the audience seems to be really enjoying this new side of MattY.

He moves back to behind the keyboard and stops his guitar playing; he turns the loop off and starts to play a different complex riff on the keyboard.  He is standing playing the keyboard whilst rapping out another verse.  This one is a lot slower than the last one, he flicks the drums off and then approaches the end of the verse and switches to singing quickly and holds a long, deep note.  Which leads into the chorus as the drums are flicked back on the keyboard is put quickly back on loop.  He gets back onto his guitar as he sings a double chorus.  As the last line comes to a close MattY stops everything.  There is silence – and then the audience applauds.
