If we all die, you are welcome to say I told you so.
But, the press has been going on about the economy so much, they need something new to sell. And suddenly, he's another influenza. I talk to doctors regularly (no, I'm not a headcase :P) and they'll all tell you that this is a classic example of the press blowing something completely out of proportion. Remember when we all died of bird flu? No, me neither. |

If it is the end of the world the Jews & Muslims are RAGING. And perhaps it is over-stepping my boundaries as a mere peon but perhaps it's worth moving this thread into Serious Debate to kick that baby off? Edited by user 28 April 2009 11:16:14(UTC)

I haven't eaten pig on more than a year, if I get this flu the pigs are some unfair motherfuckers. |

Its called Swine Influenza but it has nothing to do with swines, ive heard today on TV from a Dutch specialist.
Swine flu is a respiratory infection caused by influenza type A. It usually affects pigs, but can be passed to humans. This is a new strain, probably created when two older swine flu viruses infected the same pig in Mexico. These then swapped genes to create a fresh strain. They dont have a vaccin. It will take three to six months to produce one. |

Well, it's called swine flu because it orginates in pigs, so I think it's fair to say that it DOES have something to do with swines...
And yes, it's a new strain, because these are always mutating. We really have to panic when someone with human flu, or a cold, or something like that then gets this new strain of H1N1 and they get a chance to share RNA and then become something that can be spread from human to human much more virulently than is currently the case |

Clearly we're not all going to die its not a virus that spreads that easily, pork is safe as long as its cooked properly and it cant be passed human to human so yes it will spread, no there wont be alot of deaths and im sure the hype will die down soon i think the whole situation being headline news has been taken all out of proportion and clearly the news channels and newspapers havent got much else to talk about. |

i think it is possible and probably that within the next 25 years or so we will have a massive influenza outbreak, just look at the Spanish flu and what that did to the world... Does this mean that its going to be swine flu or bird flu that does it? i have no idea... Pigs are genetically close to Humans so it could jump in theory a lot easier than bird flu could. On the other side yes, the media need a new scare story now that everyone is getting used to the idea of a global recession. At the end of the day, if im dead in six months, then i wont care what killed me, just that im dead. |
I hate it when people see me at the supermarket and they are like: Hey, what are you doing here? and im just like: Oh you know, hunting elephants |

Lepelbos wrote:The last standings at the AD Dagblad of today. basically, that. In the UK at least, a whole 14 odd suspected cases I think it is when I last checked? And only two confirmed. And something tells me this nation has possibly surpassed a fair few hundreds of thousands in the population mark... |

The WHO raised the alert to phase 5 yesterday - meaning that a pandemic is said to be highly likely or "imminent" in 2 countries.
Scary stuff :P |

The first US casualty was in New York, my home state. I hope it doesn't get too bad. (Although it appears to already have)

(Although it appears to already have) Excuse me if the following statement looks like I'm against Mexico, it is not meant in that way. Did you notice that the death was: - 1. A young child, I think 4 years of age? - 2. A Mexican? |
