Hey James, thanks for joining us here at SpinMagazine.Com! Heh! Its great to be here.
How has life been for you lately? Busy, crazy, exciting, amazing. Its all in one. Things have just been moving so fast lately, I feel like I've been all over!
You are certainly all over, you were nominated for a Chaos Award for best male artist and your debut album didn't even come out yet! How does that make you feel? It makes me great, eager to say the least. It makes me excited for what has to come next, what accomplishments could I tackle. Its all apart of the amazing dream that I had as a young kid.. that I'm living right now. Its quite unreal.. haha.
How is your album titled 'Climbing' coming along? I hear that fans are itching for it! I'm very happy to see that my fans are anticipating the release. Because I've worked so hard on the album which is another reason why it might have been taking a bit longer. I don't ever want to rush an album out, I want the music I release to reflect on the person I am, my true feelings and outlooks. So it takes a while to really get those feelings out.
Why did you choose to name it the title you chose? Because I wanted something to concrete yet simple. It relates to the state of mind I'm in right now. I'm climbing to reach the best of me, and climbing up this ladder to certify myself as a respected artist. I'm still new, there alot of things I have to climb up to really reach the home run.
Can you tell us about the album? Is it finished? It is about 97% done. Its really turned into a piece of art. The album is very upfront, rebellious, very awakening, outspoken and captivating. It also has a lot of variety ranging from Progressive Rock to Electronic Rock. Its fits perfectly.m
How was it working with Jason Smith? That man is amazing. He really brought out a different side in me while we were recording. He's a man that really doesn't care what people think and he is truly a genius when it comes to anything having to do with music. I learned an awful being a somewhat newcomer and learning from this freaking legend, and working with him and creating this monster of a song called 'Young America' was just great.
What about Vin Peters? Vin Peters knows it all. He's such a great producer and it was really an honor working with him and getting to meet the members of Reported Failure. They always tell me how I'm someone to look out for its a great feeling, pressuring but its a great feeling.
Is it true that a collaboration with your brother Matt, is confirmed for the album? Hmmm.. maybe! My brother and I have always been optimistic about working together again. Its nothing better then that because we know alot about eachother. Our abilities as vocalist and artists as well.
Dig Me A Hole, your debut single and #1 has gone plantinum, congrats! How'd you react when you got the news? I couldn't fucking believe it. I thought I was just daydreaming or something, haha, all joking aside I was really shocked and the first person I called was my mother, then matt.
Do you feel like you were underestimated coming early into the pre stages of recording new music? I think I was. I was "matts brother" his younger brother. No one really payed attention to who I was as an artist behind the name I was sorta given. But its nice to know I've made a name for myself certainly.
Who are some of your inspirations, or the people you look up to, currently in the buisness? There's alot of people but Jason Smith, Reported Failure, Eric and Infinite, Realm. Right now, them, in terms of rock music, I listen out for their music the most. Other genres theres so much to list..
How do you feel about the return of The Walls and there new front man Alex? I think its great for them. Its good to see the Walls legacy continue..as for Alex, dont really know him but he's filling my spot as a vocalist and I wish him the best of luck. As a person I dont know him and he's been quite judgemental of me, but hey, everyone judges.. are you suppose to care? No.
Do you see a collaboration in the future? With the Walls and Alex. I dont exactly see why not... in the future. We have too many things going on to come back together for a while, but a collab, you never know just not now.
Talk about your collaboration with Cristina Lake, how'd it come about? It was a more underground approach that I was putting together in the studio. I felt it was missing something, an emotional vocalist and I was at the time flipping through a magazine and I saw her.. I just remembered how interested I was in her debut album. I had to call her up and tell her how much of a fan I was and that I had an idea to recording a song together. I did that and we ended up doing a song.
The song takes a different approach then Dig Me A Hole doesn't it? Yeah, Believing In Being Happy was not so mainstream. Alot more underground. I wanted to release the song for my underground/indie fans who enjoy music like that. I figured it wasn't fair to tend to one crowd.. so released BIBH. It sold 121,000 copies last week. That's great for a promotional single that was promoted a lot, it became an enjoyable song for smaller crowds, but I think the song is going to keep growing.
You have a new single coming out.. can you at least give us a title? And maybe a short decription? The new single will be called Illuminati Calling (Dropping Bombs). The song is just so strong and pokes at the fact or fiction of the "illuminati/new world order". Its the type of song that makes you either go " That will never happen" or "Wow this song is deep". I thought it was important to make a deep follow up from Dig Me A Hole. I'm sure everyone will enjoy it..
