Dear all,

Insomnia's going to be physically released in three days! Of course, we've already released the album online, and I want to thank anybody who took the time out to listen! So far, the response has been incredible. Have I ever mentioned how much I love you guys?

'Just Another US Tour' is going smashingly, as well! Being the headliners has been quite the honor. Big ideas cropping up for our next tour; a string orchestra as a support band, classical influences on the stage design. It's going to be intense! If there's anybody who'd like to be on tour with us, please let me know! Any acts are allowed, as we're not exactly limited with our musical tastes.

But, to all who noticed some of the more cryptic messages I've left in that album; yes, Infinite is disbanding following our upcoming tour. There's no anger, no bitterness; Insomnia is the perfect end for us. In a short space of time, we released three beloved albums to an audience of ever-increasing fans. It's been a dream come true, and everything I hoped this band would achieve has been realized. We don't want to ruin it by beginning to churn out shitty album. Greg, Matt and I just need to take a break from it all, try out new things with new people, see where it takes us. If we get back together with ideas for an album that's unlike anything we've made in the past, then Infinite will definitely return from it's hiatus!

Don't fret, though; Infinite isn't over just this second. We still have two more singles to release from Insomnia, as well as tour obligations. It's not over yet!

-Eric Quillington

(By the way, enjoy some free Infinite shit HERE)
Kid Anything- Indie/Britpop/Shoegaze; influenced by Sigur Ros, XXYYXX, Kanye West, Blur, Oasis

(Bringing together an eclectic group of influences, Ulysses' songs are sung with carefree abandon by Nick Junk)

Kurt Ulysses - Songwriter, Guitarist, Backup Vocalist
Nick Junk - Vocals, Mojo

Infinite- Alternative/Experimental Rock; influenced by Muse, Radiohead, and The Beatles

(Known best for their experimental music and their frontman's eccentric behavior, the band disbanded after Eric Quillington's death to pursue solo careers or, in Matt Robert's case, peace of mind. Infinite released four albums over the course of their career; Blue Nebula, Midnight Skies, Insomnia, and Dancing about Architecture.)

Matt Roberts - Bass
Greg Oldson - Drums, Backup Vocals, Secondary Lyricist

"When asked 'how do you write?' I invariably answer, 'one word at a time', and this answer is invariably dismissed. But that's all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That's all. One stone at a time. But I've read you can see that motherfucker from space without a telescope."

Flander Hondison: Damn bro.. The end of Infinite.. I've never really spoke out about this band, but let me say now that I've always enjoyed listening to their music. My favorite being "Blue Nebula", the two songs "No Remorse" and "Nothing's Going to Change" is just phenomenal. Say, y'all down for featuring in the upcoming Electric Roses album?

That means so much to me, the fact that you still remember our songs from way back when. It's been a fuckin' privilege to have fans like you! Anyways, about your album; Infinite would love to be a part of that! Just let us know when, mate.

I don't think Infinite deserves the title of best rock band; Mind's always been the one for me. Without Shattered Fairytale, there never would've been Midnight Skies, I guarantee it. But, without wanting to sound ungrateful, thank you so much! Praise like that means the world to me.

Composition [Music/Lyrics]

Insomnia was heavily inspired by IDM (intelligent dance music), classical music, and the cryptic lyrics of bands such as Interpol and Radiohead. Because of this, there is less obvious use of guitar throughout this album, instead placing a focus on ambient noises and beats. While Infinite's past work had a structured style, this album breaks away from traditional conventions to represent the fractured state-of-mind possessed by a man going through sleep withdrawal. The best example of this is, arguably, 'End and Begin'; the chaotic noises and vocal distortions give off the feeling of uncertainty. This claustrophobic feeling is further expressed through the song structures; very few have traditional choruses, and often change musical direction mid-song (such as 'Failing Expectations' and 'Chaos Reigns').

Many songs were initially written at earlier points of Infinite's career. 'End and Begin' is a reworked version of B-Side 'Collision', and 'Salt' was initially written during the recording sessions of Blue Nebula as, according to writer Eric Quillington, "a joke". After Matt Roberts expressed interest in this song, it was reworked to become his first vocal performance on an Infinite album. In addition, several songs are also reminiscent of the themes found on previous albums; 'Vague Similarities' recalls the murky singing style and lyrics of Blue Nebula, while 'Event Horizon' has the dream-like moods from Midnight Skies. This is because the band view this as the conclusion to their trinity of albums; Eric Quillington has stated that the lyrics on Insomnia are his "goodbye from the world of Infinite".

Reception

Insomnia has received widespread critical acclaim upon it's release, currently holding an 84 out of 100 on Metacritic. NME gave the album a rating of 9.5 out of 10, and stated, "Infinite has always pointed towards more ambient and cryptic songs, and this side to them is now fully exposed. Even the points where they break away from the new eccentric surroundings into more familiar sounds are still enjoyable; the rough edges from their wildly different first two albums have been polished clean. What you're left with is the band's most experimental, and brilliant, collection of songs to date. With Insomnia, Infinite have created their own dark masterpiece." The album's move away from traditional verse/chorus/verse song structures, as well as 'stadium-rock anthems' have also been praised. The Wire noted in a positive review, "After the creative leap from the brooding 'Blue Nebula' to the trippy dreamscapes of 'Midnight Skies', it's something of a letdown to see how little has changed this time around. Aside from deeper and more complex lyrical themes (as well as a surprise vocal spot by Matt Roberts), there's nothing here that we haven't already heard. Instead of representing leap forward, 'Insomnia' almost seems like a step backwards; a combination of their first two albums."

Q Magazine's review, while still positive, commented on (what the writer believed) the album's lack of flow in comparison to previous albums; Wire, for instance, claimed, "This album doesn't have the cohesive feel of 'Midnight Skies', and as a result doesn't feel like such an important event. It's what many believed Infinite to be above; a mess of songs with little relation to each other. An album in the loosest sense of the word. If the band couldn't merely settle for an unintelligible mess of ideas, then this is the next best thing." Claims by the band that this would focus more prominently on the talents of Greg Oldson and Matt Roberts were criticized. In the words of Rolling Stone, a magazine that has long held Infinite in a negative light; "Quillington still takes charge of this album as his two bandmates (what're their names again?) relegated to the role of session musicians."

Despite some criticisms, the album has been embraced by the musical media. Insomnia won the award of 'Best Album' at the 21st Birdies, to the surprise and bafflement of Eric Quillington and Matt Roberts.

Vague Similarities; Single Information

Vague Similarities

The opening piano keys, played by Greg Oldson, immediately set the chilling vibe that the remainder of the song follows. Eric Quillington sings in a low, almost mumbled, singing voice that is completely removed of all emotion. This creates the most striking aspect of the song; the descriptive and emotional lyrics are sung with an almost passive indifference, suggesting that the narrator no longer cares about the outcome of the conflict. Each verse also has progressively increased instrumentals: the first simply contains Greg's keyboard-playing and Eric's singing, the second brings in Matt Robert's bass-riff and Quillington's subdued and distorted guitar, and so forth. This reaches it's climax in the third verse, which is essentially a nightmarish collage of music consisting of wailing guitars, distorted bass, faint background noises of fires and screams, all played against Quillington's almost monotone singing.

All sounds then abruptly end, with the mournful piano opening brought back to center stage. Quillington sings a fourth and final verse of how 'all past rights have been wronged', before the piano riff closes the song. Lyrically, this song is about the quiet hatred many civilians can feel towards a revolution, especially if they don't support the causes. Quillington has stated that this song is influenced by the Russian Revolution of 1917, and the horrifying effects the resulting Soviet Union had on it's citizens. The sarcastically indifferent line, 'it brings me down' that serves as the end of each verse effectively sums up the themes of this song.

"The boiling of the bloodstream is building up inside of me
Air is so black, the air is so black
It brings me down

The endless possibilities are shot down before they can bloom
Skin is so blue, the skin is so blue
It brings me down

The windows are shut to blind ourselves of what’s outside
Eyes are so white, the eyes are so white
It brings me down

The city is so silent now that past rights have been wronged
Water is so red, the water is so red
It brings me down"

Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces

Soft acoustic strumming opens the song, giving way to a false sense of security. Eric Quillington sings with a rare tone of sincerity in his voice, making it seem as though this song is a ballad. From the second verse onwards, however, the proceedings take a nose-dive into the claustrophobic atmosphere found on 'Insomnia'. Pounding piano notes hover ominously, the bass-line rumbles, and out-of-tune guitar chords chime. All the while, Quillington's voice has also become electronically distorted, adding to the disturbing vibe. Each noise abruptly cut after the final two lines, leaving only the piano in it's wake. There is a jumpy quality to the audio at this point, as if this song is being played on a broken record. The sound of Quillington's whistling can be softly heard in the background as 'Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces' reaches it's end.

Lyrically, this song is a satirical look on love songs. Spinning the lyrics to a point that it speaks of schizophrenia, 'Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces' comes off as one of Infinite's darkest songs to date. Despite the undertones, Quillington still considers this to be, "The song everybody will be requesting at their Proms this year. Mark my words, I will be proven right."

"You can’t make pretty pictures, you can’t make pretty poems
It doesn’t matter, because you simply view the world differently
Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder
It’s only a matter of time before the loneliness evaporates
After all, you’ll never be alone

You can’t find inspiration, you can’t find a shred of success
It really doesn’t matter, because you simply view the world differently
Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder
If you’re scared of the silence, we’ll be there with comforting words
After all, you’ll never be alone

This is your statement; everything has it’s time
This is our statement; everything has it’s place"

Like Spinning Plates (Radiohead Cover)

Less ambient and experimental than the original version, Infinite's cover is focused solely on Quillington's singing and Oldon's piano playing. This song was selected by Infinite because it carries on the sinister concepts from the previous two songs perfectly, a conclusion to a single the band regards as 'the darkest, and most bleak, collection of sounds we'll ever make.'

"While you make pretty speeches,
I'm being cut to shreds
You feed me to the lions,
a delicate balance

And this just feels like spinning plates
I'm living in cloud cuckoo land
And this just feels like spinning plates
My body is floating down the muddy river"

Dear all,

Hello! How're we doing on this fine day? Because I'm fucking spectacular, thank you very much.

Anyways, onto some news; Infinite's going to be releasing two EPs in the next several months. Slightly ambitious? Yes. But, we're still gonna try and pull it off. A while ago, we were going to release a nine-track EP titled 'Inferno'. Each track was going to describe the nine layers of hell from 'Dante's Inferno'. It was going to be very classically influenced, with no traditional rock-instruments. The recording sessions for that EP, oddly enough, are what 'Insomnia' grew out of. So, yeah, it never saw the light of day in it's originally intended form. But, the idea still has promise, so we're going to try and make it again. Who knows, maybe we'll end up making 'Insomnia II; Return of the Night Terrors'.

No, not really. Can you imagine?

The second little EP will be released at a later point, and will consist entirely of collaborations with other artists. We traditionally stray away from collaborations with Infinite albums, and stay as a self-contained three piece, but it'd be a nice change of pace to break away from tradition this one time. We're still getting ideas of who will appear on this album, but here's who we have in mind so far; Glamazon, Brandon Caulfield, Jason Smith (fucking obvious to anybody who pays a speck of attention to my life), and Gears of Bremen.

Weird fact about these EPs; they'll be released independently, since our contract with 'Hot Eye Records' is at an end. Greg, Matt, and I think it'd be an interesting experiment if we released a couple things in this fashion before we sign onto a record label for our next album. We're in a bit of a transitional period, so these two releases could ease the way into our fourth full-length LP.

Also, there's some talk of releasing a live DVD of our performance at Wembley. Not totally sure if it'll happen yet, but it's definitely a possibility. For any who missed the televised broadcast of that night, streaming for it is available right... about... here.

And, yes, I know; Infinite was supposed to disband at the end of Insomnia. I'm sorry we're still around. Just, around the time of recording that album, I just wasn't feeling like this band mattered. The double win of 'Best Band' and 'Best Album' at the Birdies changed that for me, though. As sappy as this sounds, I've realized how special you fans are to me. As long as you're willing to listen, we're willing to make music.

Stay classy San Diego.

Dear all,

Well, it feels nice to join the ranks of the dating circle. Like, with Cassie and Jason, Nicole and Katie, etc. Yes, in case you haven't already heard the rumor, yours truly has been taken. Not going to say who, because I dunno if she'd like to announce it first. Plus, I don't want to miss the chance for the paparazzi to speculate. It's actually been pretty fun so far, reading the guesses they've thrown out there. I think the 'Eleventh Doctor' has to be my favorite choice so far. If the TARDIS ever dematerialized in my bedroom, you bet your sweet little ass that I'd ask him out on the spot.

Back on topic; honestly, it should be fairly obvious who it actually is.

Anyways, this is the 'Infinite' website, not my own personal blog. So, let's get cracking with the news. Infinite has won three little trophies during the @Chaos Awards Show. The only thing cooler than that is the fact that the host called us, 'the best band in the history of music'. I dunno if he actually meant it, or if it's really true, but fuck; that was awesome.

Our live performance as co-headliner will be up for streaming later on. For now, enjoy the two clips of my Presentations for awards. I think I did a damn good job.

Best Solo Artist (Female)

Eric Quillington steps up to the microphone, and looks at those in attendance for a brief couple seconds. Getting over the initial nerves of having no preparation, he attempts to act as charming as possible.

“Uhm… hi. It’s me, Eric… erm… Quilton. I mean, Quillington. Eric Quillington. That’s me. Hello. And we are here to honor the best Female Solo artist. It’s a good thing Matt Roberts hasn’t released an album by himself yet, or he’d be eligible to win this one.”

Eric laughs awkwardly, hoping for a good reaction to his truly awful joke. Aside from a couple coughs from those in the audience, the only other audible noise is a screamed out ‘FUCK OFF’ from an unidentified bassist.

“Righty-ho, then, here we go; the runner-up is none other than the legendary Stephanie Fierce. And the winner is; the always lovely ALICIA LENA!”

Icon Award

There are several groans in the audience as Eric steps up to present another award. An interesting duality seems to exist regarding the nature of people’s perception towards Infinite’s frontman; as a musician, he is one of the most beloved people in Europe. As an awards presenter…

“Hello again! I hope we’re all having a good time! So, this is the final award of the evening; the Icon Award! It’s rather sad, though; they told me that they’d have me present awards I have no chance of winning. Guess I’m not an Icon, huh?”

Once again, Eric laughs, hoping for a decent response. There is laughter this time, however, but in an incredibly sarcastic manner from Matt Roberts.

“Okay, so, yeah… jokes don’t work. But, y’know what? Neither did Mr. Roberts’ condom.”

Not a word is uttered at Albert Hall, as everyone is staring at Eric with shocked expressions. Taking the silence as a form of victory, he merely smiles and continues;

“So, here we go! The runners up are none other than Moronic Changeling. Of course, that would mean that the winner would have to be truly special to top them. And, honestly, she is; give it up for MISS VANITY!”

We should totally double date sometime, even though I'm fucking terrified of Cassie.

Awww, one of your favorites? Thank you, Katie! I really hope this doesn't sound too insulting or anything, but you're one of my favorite lesbians! Oh, god, that sounds unintentionally horrible...

I think that was the best possible way to announce that it was you. I knew I picked wisely...

Jason: Sure! Of course, I can't let her know it's you two that we're going out with, but I'll make it happen.
