A Brief Look into the Background of "Free": The Producer Speaks

Hello, everyone! Who knew all of this was going to happen so soon! It's been fairly about 4 months since the release of "Newborn". and now it's nearly 7 days before the release of fifth studio child "Free". It seems that with every album, I only grow more excited about this kind of thing. That last moment, before you unveil something you've been putting so much time into, the adrenaline rush is just indescribable.

And yes It's finally starting to hit me. Please check out the post before this one where you can see the official "Free" album information, with credits. All me baby :) I'm not going to lie, it feels good that no other person's name is slapped in the credits section. I've always wanted to create something completely on my own, without anyone's input or opinion. So....when the 28th hits, before you listen to the new album, I would like you to listen to my fourth studio album, in contrast to this one. You would notice a connection between the two albums. However, if you thought Newborn was a departure from my previous material, then wait until you listen to "Free". I'm gonna get more into detail about that once the album is released.

I'm an artist and I don't want to become that pop musician, who makes albums, classic albums after classic album that follows that same simple rule. The Top notch cliche structure. I've been doing that the past 4 albums. That phase of my music career is officially over. I want to create something way beyond that now.

With this album, I'm representing my mind in the form of an atmosphere that reflects it. It contains not only an intricate musical soundscape which I created and named myself, (clears throat) "I will like to present to you the Fierce Atmosphere"!, I wanted to create something, that would later on grow and evolve into something else, for my albums in the future. This mimics the same idea of human society and it's development over time.

"Free" also contains the psychological aspect of a true writer, who's challenged by disgust and delusion. This is the reason most of the lyrics are written straight like a story, rather than a manufactured/processed song (with the exception of "Dying in the Airwaves and "Poetry Monster"). The pace they are sung in is also effected. This lead me to explore and include the "spoken" music genre. Somethings are just not meant to be sung. As I've said, this album is somewhat psychological, and I wanted to create boundaries so that my thoughts would not escape and the main idea sticks through.

The fierce atmosphere is a musical getaway, where everything nature is the architecture/blueprint of all things and all realistic thoughts dominate the delusional ones. Each layer is influenced by everything I've created musically in the past. Which my fans will recognize once they look at deeper details. Best way to explain this is to say a collage of my music known as "the Family Tree" will invisibly live in the atmosphere. However, the Fierce Atmosphere is often attacked by the poetry monster.

My next goal is to put the whole idea into a visual and create a virtual model of it, where you can actually 'see' it. I'm currently working on that and will be launching the website once it's completed. Speaking about visuals...... the artwork represented in the album, is heavily inspired by the songs. I didn't just slap in an image of myself and put a font over it. I actually gathered images, that represented the song. One of the song artwork (ps. Electric Guitar Virgin) shows my fingers literally bleeding, as I was trying to develop my guitar skills. It's all carefully crafted. Once again I'll get more into detail once the album is release. I've made something truly on my own and I really would like to congratulate myself for doing it. It's kind of crazy, the production span in comparison to my previous albums, this one turned out to be much more complex and developed in a shorter period of time.

I'm happy. I write and speak out my mind, therefore I am FREE.

- Stay Fierce, Stephanie Fierce

1. DYING IN THE AIRWAVES
Written and produced by Stephanie Fierce

UserPostedImage

Song Background and Lyrics

Stephanie Fierce was looking at the "World Press Photos" and came across the one taken by Malcolm Browne, which featured the self-Immolation(setting oneself on fire as a form of protest, suicide or punishment) of Buddhist monk Thích Quảng Đức. Steph proceeded on to watching the footage of the act. After watching the self-immolation video, she was inspired to write "Dying in the Airwaves", which in prospect talks about the same idea applied in the music industry.

"I was afraid to speak of this, because it can be a very controversial topic. But self-immolation is probably one of the most disturbing things I've learned about humanity. There's something scary about that. At first, it just seemed so wrong and as human beings, it's kind of hard to look into the reason of that. To go into that perspective of the human mind, so I'm not speaking against the religion of Buddhism and I'm not saying "suicide" is the way to prove a point. But you have admire someone like Thích Quảng Đức. When you're seeing someone's life being ripped out by flames. It's almost like getting a preview of what hell is going to be like. It changed my life forever."

The idea of self-immolation heavily inspired Stephanie Fierce to write "Dying in the Airwaves', which mimics the idea of it.

“I wanted to put myself in the position of Thích Quảng Đức the best way I could and write the lyrics. Of course, I didn’t light myself on fire, but I put my mind in the worst place possible to see what would come out lyrically. I couldn’t possibly put myself in such discomfort. What a noble man he was to not make one bit of noise or move a muscle”.

Pre-production

During her pregnancy and time away from recording, Stephanie went to production school to sharpen her skills, that way she could finally produce an album on her own. Before production began, Stephanie Fierce wanted to create a musical atmosphere for “Free”. So pre-production for the album took place, to make a foundation. To make the foundation Stephanie Fierce used machines costumed made and designed by a private music instrument manufacturing company. The machines were made to mimic orchestral instruments and operatic vocals, specifically made for the album. Stephanie Fierce spent months organizing the foundation by experimenting with the machines which were designed to her taste and level of knowledge. Once, getting comfortable with the machines, Steph began programming the ambient sounds that she had taped with her tape recorder and the “Fierce Atmosphere” was developed.

OOC: This “Pre-production but is going to be edited out towards the last post, once all the tracks are posted. This pre-production bit applies to all of the tracks, not just “Dying in the Airwaves”.

Production and Composition

Making her guitar playing debut, Stephanie Fierce's "Dying in the Airwaves" , features an on-going electric guitar. The song’s basic chord progression was arranged and defined in the matter of 2 days, which was rather quickly for Steph. The song first builds up with intense discordant chords. Stephanie Fierce noticed that the "discordant chords" in the song where used a lot in a many indie folk-rock songs, so she made it her own by adding more upbeat preferences. Her vocals are heard as warm, mellow and melancholic in the beginning and in the choruses. But the second verse features hard sung/screamo like vocals. The purpose was to sing with emotion despite it sounding like she's holding back vocally. You can hear her 'fear' and presence for once. Her vocals are not about confidence, or ego-like vocals, but within all-that there, confidence somehow makes its way.

The ambient production was minimally influenced by Formic Acid's "Dream of Fantasy" (an ambient record, Stephanie Fierce looked up on youtube), which features an on-going faded "chorus-like” sound. The record was only an influence to the song, instead of sampling it Steph used the “Fierce Atmosphere” for the song's ambient production. Overall, “DITA” was recorded, edited, mixed by Stephanie Fierce in the scale of two weeks.

"Dying in the Airwaves" (Lyrics)

(Spoken):
They now play me. (Scratchy tape)

(Verse 1 Sung):
They.... eat you, they eat me too
You tamed the noises, they're all clam now
Who these people hunting me now?...They like to listen....

They will slay me, searching for those lost emotions
But how could she not die? How could I not die?
No need to run now, just wake to defeat......

(Chorus Part 1, with SELF back up vocals in parenthesis)
Life Long Gone; (its been long now, its been long)
They forgot to listen; (its been long now, its been long)
Long Life gone; (it’s been long now, its been long)
Only you will listen, In this industry

(Part 2 of Chorus Spoken)
Ghost of your voice, acidic spit from your lips,
They could foster me

(Part 3 Repeat of Chorus, Sung with SELF back up vocals in parenthesis)
Life Long Gone; (its been long now, its been long)
They will hate me; (its been long now, its been long)
They will listen; (it’s been long now, its been long)
They will listen, In the industry

(Verse 2)
So...Fuck the radio, fuck the charts
This shit right here comes from the heart
Rock star pop star, same fucking star
You made me the star
You tore me apart.....
but I'm just a lyrical beast, from the mouth to the sheet
pop music contradictory, searching for radio hits ('hits' said in latino accent)
and I'm also a industry priest, not living life as if deseased
Some hooker whore look a like, I hear this all the damn time!
But they don't know I was doomed
born in a equivocacy womb
raised in miracle tomb
and lost my fucking damn mind
Never will be a thing of the past,
is that a forgivable crime?

(Bridge; Guitar Solo)

(Chorus Sung, with self back up vocals in parenthesis)
Life Long Gone; (its been long now, its been long)
They will hate me; (its been long now, its been long)
They will listen; (it’s been long now, its been long)
They will listen, In the industry

(Outro)
Now I'm done.
Long life.....GONE
in the airwaves......the airwaves
Dying in the airwaves
I'm dying in the airwaves
Dying in the airwaves
Dying.....

They will never play me..

2. BIRD FLU SUNG
Written and produced by Stephanie Fierce

UserPostedImage

Song Background and Lyrics

Just before the relationship of Stephanie Fierce and The Rockers lead singer Johnny Johnson had ended, Steph went through a period of depression, which inspired the song. Stephanie Fierce had never written a song about her husband before, since she was always a bit intimated by the press. However, she didn't want to become too apprehensive of the media, and with more reason wrote “Bird Flu Sung”.

“I wrote this while I was in my apartment in New York. I was going through a very emotional time. It's once again more of me and what goes inside my life. I’ve always written song to other people or about other people. But, Bird Flu Sung talks about trying to leave someone, but their love is so strong, it has mutated in you. You're kind of stuck with the bird flu. I shamelessly wanted to be a little creative with the title. I remember it was raining the day, and the sky was so grey, it really looked nasty outside. I felt like shit and I got into this emo-like mood and just started writing away”.

Production and Composition

Stephanie Fierce's "Bird Flu Sung " , the song features, a harp and broken down/distorted music boxes that create a beat that doesn't sound classical, but leans more towards ambient. The song’s basic piano arrangement was arranged and defined in the matter of 4 hours. The song starts off with a clavichord playing off, fading out to piano and delusive like harp. Various music boxes are distorted throughout the song for a chilling effect.

Vocals are possessive, bold while the song doesn't really have a structure to it. It's just sung as if it were reading out as a poem. Ironically, Stephanie fierce smiled when recording the song, since by doing so it complemented her vocal range and soprano like vocals. Stephanie Fierce’ vocal grow raspy and louder towards the end of the song, leading out to a scream.

Once again for the ambient production Steph uses the “Fierce Atmosphere”. The use of it was minimal though, as Stephanie wanted the song to be more defined. Overall, “BFS” was recorded, edited, mixed by Stephanie Fierce in the scale of two days.

"Bird Flu Sung" (Lyrics)

The New York sky is coffee black these days
At least God’s tears writing on my window….glaze
Leaving messages I can’t comprehend
And this feeling you’ve injected in me stays
Cause every time you leave….
I am calling, I am calling
For you
Like that woman in 6th avenue
I have lost the remote to my life
and it won’t turn on
I’ve let things go, I’ve let things go
But you seem so promising, It’s hard to let you go"

Glamazon: I absolutely adore the production, especially with the distorted music boxes, it really gives it that vulnerable feel and you can sense the emotion through your vocals and in the lyrics. Killer track, great work, sweetheart!

You're so creative and innovative, Mrs. Fierce, I love it! Many pop-stars just stick with what they know best when they've gotten to your level of success, but then again, you've always been one of the more special artists out there. Looking forward to listening to the other tracks!

"When asked 'how do you write?' I invariably answer, 'one word at a time', and this answer is invariably dismissed. But that's all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That's all. One stone at a time. But I've read you can see that motherfucker from space without a telescope."

3. LUBE
Written and produced by Stephanie Fierce
Genre: Indie Rock, Pop

UserPostedImage

Song Background and Lyrics

Stephanie Fierce wanted this song to be more of a listening song, hence the overall two minutes out of the 4 of just instrumental playing. But while the lyrics are quite short, it gets straight to the point in a collective kind of way and that's what she wanted with this song. 'Lube' talks about the feeling of prime time or in sexual terms the feeling of wanting to reach an orgasm. This song works. Because not only is it song about anal sex.....it's also double meaning in the sense of breaking free from something so intense. Something that might be out of reach.. It could be anything really. But she specifically wanted it to be about sex.

“ I'm not cutting back or hiding the element of the song. I'm being straightforward and coming clean. It's a listening song as I've stated. This is the song that sort of breaks away from the touchy touchy core of the album and we get into something much more free spirited, edgy and upbeat. You have the fast-sung but understandable lyrics, the stop and go guitars, distorted clavichords that do nothing but compliment the song...... What more could you want? It's more of an indie pop sort of record for me and once I'm giving my fans more of me.”

Production and Composition

"LUBE", is the second and last song that does not include the “Fierce Atmosphere”. The song features an ongoing chorus with a jumpy stop and go guitar, as well as an electronic keyboard and a complimenting clavichord that is randomly played in many sections of the song. The song has a summery vibe, adding warmth to the album. The stop and go guitars are played throughout the song, as well as the drumming. All keys of the electronic keyboard are pressed six times at the finish of the chorus. A lengthy instrumental of the stop and go guitar and drum takes over as it finishes off.

Stephanie Fierce puts forward psychedelic like vocals, her range doesn’t grow pretty distant and the song doesn’t really emphasize on the vocals, as they sound faded or as if recorded with low quality equipment. Overall, “LUBE” was recorded, edited, mixed by Stephanie Fierce in four days in the matter of two recording section.

"LUBE" (Lyrics)

Don’t let the turtle be your inspiration,
You’ve been trying for weeks now
But your blow up sex doll deflated
These days, you gotta go the extra mile… for. It. to. work
You’re losing patience for the feeling
But this feeling is for the fortunate only
and you’re starting to get lonely
You disgusting romantic,
which version do you like the most
This feeling is so elastic but it doesn’t last too long
My strength's incompetent, this feeling in parentheses
I’m going to push it to the edge (sel feesh you),
I’m gonna push myself, (SELFISH YOU!)
I’m gonna hurt myself for you
But I’m now discouraged
AND THEN I FAULT.MY.SELF/ WHEN. I. CAN'T
(selfish-you)
And you get your sense of joy, you get your sense of joy
I’m like the tree that stares into the sun,
Looking for what could kill me.......
And needing more, I'm needing mo-ho-ore, I'm needing more
But the feeling's too intense, the idea lost its senses

Just a little lube, Look how easy it all becomes……….

4. ELECTRIC GUITAR VIRGIN
Written and produced by Stephanie Fierce
Genre: Alternative Rock, Minimal Trance, Classical Crossover

UserPostedImage

Song Background and Lyrics

After the release of “Dying in the Airwaves” and making her guitar playing debut, Stephanie Fierce was inspired to write a song about guitars and her new found love freedom with them.

“I didn’t want the song to be this typical “rock” song with a guitar solo. So I added a classical crossover section towards the end, where everything settles down. That was bound to happen, anyway. As I’ve said I put boundaries, I didn’t want the song to turn the song into something it was not meant to be or something that didn’t represent me. Very complex to put it all together, but it worked.”

The song’s lyric are simple word play with virginity and guitar playing.

Production and Composition

"Electric Guitar Virgin", is the only song of two that does not include the “Fierce Atmosphere” in the instrumentation. The song features an electronica based composition. A forceful instrumentation of a brawling guitar with driven bass, keyboards is heard. The song pays homage to “Electric Club”, mimicking its heavy bass line. The song starts off with a static like beat classified in the dubstep genre however that does not continue throughout the song. Once the chorus kicks in, the electric guitar dominates the overall sound leading up the guitar solo. The guitar solo mimics the chorus with emphasis and acts as a bridge. Due to Steph’s low experience with guitar solos, it’s composed to mimic the chorus. Once the guitar solo is finished, the track goes into this trance fusion like break, leading up to a classical music crossover section above a trip hop influenced beat. Stephanie Fierce arranged the beats with pre-recorded classical pieces. The classical crossover section features a striking violin that builds up to a non-stop 16 second vocal belt, making it the second vocal acrobatic done in “Free”. The song then proceeds with the trip–hop beat while slowly fading out.

Vocals are laid back through most of the song and the lyrics are purposely sung as if Stephanie was reading them out. She almost sounds as if she’s under control and the soprano side is more present. Stephanie Fierce’s vocal ranges from D3- E6 in her 16 second vocal belt. Overall, “Electric Guitar Virgin” was recorded, edited, mixed by Stephanie Fierce in two weeks. It was the last song to be mixed and shipped for the album.

"Electric Guitar Virgin" (Lyrics)

She’s dress in black, with the pic and the spike
But they still say,
she a….Electric Guitar Virgin
She plays it hard, with the tongue out her mouth
But they still say…..
Electric Guitar Virgin

(I couldn't come up with full lyrics of this, so I just put a taster of what the lyrics would look like)

5. IN LOVE ALONE
Written and produced by Stephanie Fierce
Genre: Alternative Pop, Downtempo, Fierce Atmosphere-Industrial

UserPostedImage

Song Background and Lyrics

So far while listening to “Free”, you get a sense of tenderness, and humility with the instrumentation of the first two tracks. “Dying in the Airwaves” and “Bird Flu Sung” seem more organized and both songs include a climax that might be predictable. With “Lube” and “Electric Guitar Virgin” you get more of an experimental feel with the electronic elements and with the loose guitar selections, despite “EGV” having an classical like climax towards the end, it was only done purposely to bring you back and not lose its purpose. With the fifth song, Stephanie wanted to mix in the two vibes.

After feeling a bit overwhelmed with the recording process of “Free”, Stephanie Fierce wrote “In Love Alone” inside a New York City train terminal late at night, she placed herself within the group of passengers to give her ambition and a sense of company. But not even that numbed her into normality nor gave her a purpose to finish the song. Steph surprisingly wrote what she could in about 10 minutes, lost all ambition and didn’t finish it leaving the lyrics incomplete. With the song’s lyrics, Steph seems to become the narrator of her own thoughts, opening up about the feelings of her ex-husband Johnny once again. It’s the one song on the album where that she hated, especially throughout the process of actually making it.

“In the process, I was thinking what the hell happened to me. Why am I putting all of this effort into this guy and he’s not even putting any effort into showing affection towards me. Affection and communication is a big part of love. I didn’t understand it because I felt like we had everything we needed to be the best lovers we could possibly be. Money wasn’t an issue and time wasn’t that much of an issue either. Being with this man, felt like being at the mountain top, him missing, and no one to share the view with. I felt like a balloon full of nothing but air. Going up, and up without an actual purpose. So these lyrics are not only a reflection of my annoyance and loss of ambition, at the same time it’s a song about something so simple and cliché that I could in fact have finished. But I didn’t.It’s kind of interesting.”

Production and Composition

“I guess you can say that I was trying to make this song as interesting as possible. When I wrote the song, it was already looking out to be some sort of boring ballad. At the time, I was very worn out with looking at myself and after going over the unfinished lyrics, I was pretty bored with the sound I was already creating in my head. Everything about this song was just annoying to me for some reason and til this day I don’t know how it made its way to the album. Maybe the fact that it’s unfinished made it…. finished."

“IN LOVE ALONE” jumps back into the Fierce Atmosphere, and goes a bit deeper into the darker soundscape, that was not showcased in “Dying in the Airwaves” and “Bird Flu Sung”. The song also features the more industrial side of the fierce atmosphere that eventually meets up with a collection of brass instruments. The industrial sound, sounds like machinery hitting against each other almost like train tracks, as if the machines are on-going without a purpose. This reflects the “no progression” of the lyrics. Even with the glitchy instrumental parts of the song, the song suffers progression before ending with a collection of brass instruments going off, giving the ear a sense of freedom, escaping from the dark sounds of the Fierce atmosphere, and finally introducing a moment of progression. However, after the collection of brass instruments go off, the song ends and train tracks are heard once more.

“Brass instruments make the perfect sound, if you’re introducing a moment in music. It’s almost welcoming. That moment comes in, the overwhelming sound of brass instruments going off give you a sense of freedom. I never thought I was going to use this part of the “Fierce Atmosphere so soon into making the album to be quite honest.”

Stephanie Fierce’s vocals are sound as if annoyed and almost forced through boredom. Her range is heard all over the place and it doesn’t seem structured. Overall, “In Love Alone” was recorded, edited, mixed by Stephanie Fierce in the matter of ten days in the process of three recording sessions.

"In Love Alone" (Lyrics)

"Are you here with me (Whispers)

You really had me going,
but left me empty handed
In need of it...................
I'm screaming with confidence I swear
Out this coffin you put me in
With one eye open, as my intuition ends
It seemed like I was in love
In love with with the air
Freely, but waiting for the rush to begin
In reality............
You had the floor above my head
and I was falling effortlessly
Viewing the picture all alone
In a cold mountain top
How nice could that possibly be?
Not knowing or receiving anything
And it feels like I’m In Love alone....
what an irritation
This loneliness brings Irritation
And it feels like……
In Love Alone, giving my everything
and I still look for your love I confess
But it’s nowhere to be found"

Sexy Star: Gorl... you already know "Lube" is my favourite, but you don't need me to tell you that. This is the album of my youthful and beautiful 15 year old life.

OOC: I love how unique the lyrics are, I love them! :D

Erich: i cant help but love steph.and i hope to never reach the level of maturity to not focus on the anal sex tune...you know,steph...

Karoleina: down, puppy.you never know, steph never said which side of that equasion she is on.she seems like a pretty take charge kinda girl,so you might end up on the other end of things.

Erich:*gives this some thought.* well hell,i'll try anything once.also... Sadly, steph's guitar work is better than mine.

Stephanie Fierce: Oh thanks Magie, that's really nice! :) It's what I wanted for people to feel while listening to the album, so it's good to see the mission was accomplished :)
