Release Date: June 26, 2011 Format: CD Single, Digital Download Recorded: February - March 2011 Genre: R&B, Soul, Blues Length: 4:47 Label: Junction Records! Written By: Alicia Lena Producer: Ryan Ross Hernandez, Will.Rocca, Alicia Lena "Who I Am, Who I’m Not, Who I Wanna Be" is a song by American R&B recording artist Alicia Lena. It was written by Alicia Lena in early 2011 and was produced by Alicia Lena, Ryan Ross Hernandez and Will.Rocca for her sophomore album ‘Waking Up’ (2011). The song marks the release of the third single from the number one album. And follows the hugely the succesfull first two singles, Clichés Come Easy and The Butterfly Effect which both became number one hits. This single will be Alicia’s eighth single following her debut just over one year ago. The single will be released on June 26, 2011. Background‘Who I Am, Who I’m Not, Who I Wanna Be’ was written in January 2011 by Alicia Lena at her New York apartment, she stated in an interview in March that the song came unexpectedly from just playing the piano one evening, “I was just messing around with a couple of sounds I had in my mind and I suddenly came up with the intro that you hear at the beginning of the song, And the song kinda formed itself in that way, it was a lot different from how I wrote the other songs for the album, but it’s definitely a song that I’m pleased with.” It’s a song about trying to be the absolute best possible version of yourself and trying to figure out what kind of person you have become, “When you leave school or college and you’ve gotta head out into the big bad world you have no idea what to expect, you don’t know the person you’re gonna become or even the person you wanna be. And it’s tough to make these decisions you can never just know everything, it’s all about learning, you’ve gotta make mistakes to learn from them and I think it’s a scary world for 16-19 year olds trying to find their way in the world, I’d like to think that this song could maybe give them perspective because I felt just as scarred when I was that age and I never had anyone to tell me that everything would work out eventually.” She said about the song in March 2011. The song is another soft, soulful R&B track, familiar in sound to her previous singles from her sophomore album, Waking Up. It’s soft piano introduction sets the song up perfectly for Alicia to question what she has become as she realises that her attempts to hide from her past cannot continue as she attempts to make a change and become the best person that she can be.
