You could say that it all started when one day, Dan Helyer and Damien Comyns were having lunch and talking crap, and YouTubing it for random Moronic Changeling fans, as if they had nothing better to do. (Which, to be brutally honest, they didn't.)
((OOC : Ian = Damien, Anthony = Dante, Smosh = Moronic Changeling. It works.)) Or, you could say that it started before that. Which may be more accurate. But this was definitely a turning point. Damien did look up his family tree, and yes, a lot of white people, mostly from the Cardiff area, his most interesting find being that there were actually people from England a few generations back.
"I can't believe I'm actually related to people from like, over the border!" he had said, in surprise. "You should try this, it's crazy."
"No," said Dan, gritting his teeth. "It's me - and my dad - and you're like an annoying little brother to me, so I guess I'm related to English people too! Whoa, man!"
"Speaking of annoying little brothers, I think I accidentally on purpose locked Kato in the airing cupboard. I better go check if he's still alive. See ya."
Dan knew that Damien had only forgotten his past - after all, it wasn't something they talked about. The two of them and Katriel, Damien's 17-year-old brother, lived happily together. Before that, they had gone to university together, and before that, they'd been next-door neighbours since Dan was three. Before that? Dan may as well have not existed before his life in Merthyr Tydfil. He never thought about it. He'd never gone back to Weybridge, not even for a visit to any of the Helyer family. Let alone gone to see his mother in California. Though he joked about her a lot, he considered Mrs. Comyns to be his mother. Why would he want anyone else?
Josh Helyer. Dan Helyer. This was weird. Dan had tried to tell himself that it was just a surname, there were five guys with the surname Lewis in his class at primary school, none of them related. But Helyer - much rarer name. Also, how could it be that they both had relatives in Surrey and California? That screamed that they shared blood. But how could it be true? Things like this happened on TV shows and in movies, not in real life. There was no way ....
Dan Helyer. Josh Helyer.Dan and Damien walked into the studio the next day to see Kaethe, Somerset, Nick and Jimmy sitting around with Kathleen Cruz-Bishop, aka. Kamikaze Kate. Dan was one of the few people on DBM who hadn't learned to tolerate that crazy bitch - sure, she had Tourette's and whatever, but he'd made enough allowances for that. They rubbed each other up the wrong way.
He put his hands on his hips and looked at her. "And what are you doing hanging around like a silent fart? Didn't you read the door? Moronic Changeling practice room. Moronic Changeling."
Kate looked at him as if she was sulking. "Kamikaze Nick's my fucking mother, you know."
"She's not your mother. You're talking bollocks."
"Mentor. Good as, dickfucker." Kate left, slamming the door behind her.
Kate and Nick were BFFs, that was certain. To those who didn't know Nick or Kate at all, they looked like lesbians; after all, Nick had been out'n'proud for years, now Kate was too, and the two were very close. Dan saw a different kind of relationship in Nick and Kate though, an even deeper bond - a surrogate parent and child, water thicker than blood.
Just like I have with Damien and Kato, my brothers. But that doesn't mean I don't want to know. I have to find out.He took in a deep breath and turned to his manager. "Jimmy, I've seen this great band I think we should work with. They're called Misery Loves Company. Could you get Renée to call them?"
Jimmy smiled. "Sure, always looking for more ways to get the music going! I'll just get that sorted. Friends of yours, Dan?"
"I just - think they're cool guys, and great musicians."
"Gay," said Damien, watching Jimmy leave, not really paying attention. "They're a boyband, aren't they? And they all have hair like yours. You make me feel so hetero, Dante."
"So does your mum," Dan countered, "and that's not why I'm interested."
"Why you bovverrrred then, Dan?" said Nick. "I like to know 'bout who I'm workin' wiv, innum?"
"Erm .... long story, you wouldn't be interested."
"Yer right thur, yarr. I be orf to see wha' Kate's up to. Torch'rin' Kato, prob'ly." The small but powerful woman rose to her feet and left the room, and without words, Damien followed at the mention of his brother.
Family loyalty, thought Dan.
Do I owe any to the Helyer family, or to Josh? I wonder ....Somerset Bissell, the band's ever-inquisitive bassist, moved closer to Dan. "I want to know. Come on, tell me! Tell Kaethe and me."
He was in a trap, sat between two ladies who would never give in on anything.
"OK. You know Damien and I are Welsh, right? Well - he is, I'm not. I was born in a town called Weybridge in Surrey. I'm a bastard, that is, my parents aren't married, and I took my mum's name, Helyer. She's American, from California, and she was always heading back there when I was little. When I was three, she announced that she was pregnant. Then the family split up, she ran off to America, my dad built a new life in Wales. We've never looked back - until now."
Somerset looked at him, confused. "Why now? And what has that got to do with Misery Loves Company?"
"It's a long shot, but I think that one of the band members may be that kid my mum had, and I want to know him."
Both women, in a rare emotional moment, hugged him tightly. This wasn't going to be easy.
