The Future and Beyond

The boys in TMK are content with the success that they have. They are still largely popular on the independent and underground music scene but have yet to release a largely popular record on the mainstream side. But they seem content with that fact and seem to agree that the moment hasn't yet come for them. While they wait for major mainstream success they hope that their future endeavors will help them reach this goal. Their newest and still yet unreleased major concept album "The Water's Edge" seems to be the record they hope will get them reaching the goal they strive for. They've hired Jason Smith as their producer and believe he is the right ingredient to the mix. Whether this album will be their crowning achievement still remains to be seen.

Johnny: I knew as soon as we started writing this album and started talking concept ideas that Jason was the number one pick for us. We wanted him at the helm or nobody else. If we couldn't get him we were going to scrap the album altogether. He's definitely been a godsend behind the recording booth. The general consensus was to try and get a different sound along with some untapped resources out of us. Jason required us to reach down deep in the writing and recording process. It's something we don't regret.

Joe: There isn't enough we can say about Jason's direction for Water's Edge. He worked with us when we explained the idea and story behind it. It definitely became a shared vision among all of us, including Jason, to make this album the best it could be. He really helped us open up our sound to its fullest spectrum.

Mack: Having him not only in the booth but guesting for a few songs was absolutely perfect. Jason definitely is an honorary "kid" and we were glad to invite him into our studio. As well as have him spend time among our families. This album would never have been as near as good as it could have been or live up to its potential without having Jason at the front of it all.

Clyde: There just isn't enough words or enough time to describe all the cards that Jason brought to the table. He helped us keep our general sound yet expanded it at the same time. Every track was just gold. I don't think there's any recording on the album that we as a band don't like. Every song just clicked. It was just something we all stood back and stared at admiring how perfect it was. Kind of like looking at the ceiling on the Sistine Chapel.

Johnny: In my opinion I think this is the best album we've done to date. Everything was just there. The sound, the idea, and the music. There wasn't one thing that was out of place. Bringing Jason in brought it all together and made everything converge into a beautiful landscape of sound. It was everything we wanted it to be.

Even though the album has yet to be released the band considers it to be one of their best releases to date. Jason Smith has yet to release his comments on recording with the band. But with the new album coming the band is also exploring other avenues in their music. Each member wants to do a solo effort while still working with TMK as a collective unit. This has also lead to further discussion for more concept album based ideas and even a reworking of their first band.

Johnny: Captain Phineas Showalter was sort of a hybrid of elaborated stories amongst the band as just a general party game that we played while passing the bottle around and smoking herb. One night Joe got the idea to record these ongoing stories that we would tell between each other. I'd start whatever idea I had in my head about the good Captain, take a hit from the joint, a swig from the bottle, and then pass these things over to Joe. Who in turn would elaborate on the original idea until he ran out of steam. Then he'd pass bottle and joint over to Mack and so on and so on. You get the idea.

Joe: I just decided to record all this drunken and stoned nonsense on night on a digital voice recorder. Then we kind of hashed out the other ideas when we were in a more sober state of mind. The rest kind of worked itself out really. I wish I could say it was more of a grand idea that we came up with one night while smoking our pipes together in the billiards room. But it's not. It was formed from stoned and drunk nonsense.

Mack: But we are dedicating the album to an author that we all like that was definitely a driving force behind the tall tales. Mark Twain. If any man could weave a story or come up with exploits like our great Captain Phineas T. Showalter, he could. So it's a rather obvious tongue in cheek dedication and tribute. Though we're putting our own spin on it.

Clyde: Captain Showalter was born out of a night of drunken debauchery and stoned sillyness as most of our great ideas are of course. We initially wanted to turn it into a sort of adult children's book or graphic novel of sorts. But then we all got to thinking what if we just made this into an album? That was all that need to be said. So we translated some of our inebriated ideas and tales into the mythos that will become Captain Showalter and of course his famous Elixir of Immortality.

Johnny: While we were all yukking it up about this grand idea to make a few albums on the tall tales of this really old mythical old western type figure some other ideas started taking shape. We were so fixated on the south and cowboys at that point. Then Joe brought up the name of our first band. We were really flowing on this concept idea. So it was natural that it would come up.

Joe: I remember watching David Bowie and how he did his whole Ziggie Stardust thing. Then I figured what if we did that with Mudd Flap and The Cruzers? Except the idea was to make them a more southern rock and blues type group. A sort of an Americanized version of the Rolling Stones. We've already got names picked out and everything. We're adding an old friend of ours into the fold as our second guitar player with Johnny strictly doing vocals and harmonica. It's going to be a trip.

Mack: The whole Andy Kaufman-esque ruse behind it is what I like the most. But we're not going to elaborate too much on it right now. We'll keep you guessing on when we're gonna show up. You never know when Mudd Flap and The Cruzers are going to make their
debut. But expect a spectacle.

Clyde: It's all under wraps for now. We like keeping the wool over everybody. Just keep your eyes peeled.....

Expecting a spectacle seems to be a true statement for any fan of TMK. They have a large following of fans from every spectrum of the music world. Their sound is a fusion that has developed into something all its own. Their future seems to grow more interesting by the minute. Whatever this band decides to do next is anyone's guess. But it's their unique musical formula that truly makes them a great band. They measure their success not by their charts or album sales. But by the fans and memories they make.

Jason: Those Meddling Kids are quickly becoming one of my favourite bands. Not only are you guys some of the coolest people I have ever worked with, but you're awesome musicians as well and I wish you the greatest success with this. I hope we will be able to work on projects in the future, since your sound and my style of production definitely compliment each other. You guys are definitely going places, and I'm sure that this release will break you through to the mainstream, if it doesn't, people obviously don't have ears.

Johnny: I can't say enough. Those comments mean alot to us. We are content to be the underground force that we are recognized as. Though we all want to break into the mainstream.

Joe: It's definitely a love-hate relationship with us for sure. We want the recognition yet we like where we're at.

Mack: Just slightly under the radar. We've always been comfortable there and if that's where we stay, so be it.

Clyde: Though it'd definitely be nice to crash those hip little IMA parties.

Johnny: For sure. But it was more than a pleasure working with you Jason. We'll definitely call on you again when we need you behind the booth for another album. You were definitely the perfect ingredient for what the album needed. We thank you for making it greater than what it was.

The only member of the band to speak openly on their solo album release is Joe. Who plans to do an album with his fiance and soon-to-be wife, Kate. He plans to do a hybrid of Appalachian Blues and Folk along with some Jazz numbers that are done only by his significant other. Joe elaborates further on his plans and what has already been done for the album's promotion.

Joe: Kate and I have always had a comradery together when singing with each other. She compliments my voice and my more traditional acoustic work when I want to bust it out. I just love hearing her harmonies over mine because nobody does it better. At least female wise of course. We've already filmed a music video together for our single. It was a very beautiful and spiritual experience for both of us to bring the song to life that way. The girl's my angel. I can't say enough about her.

Kate: I fell in love with him the first day I met him. I'm a California girl though and for me to fall for some country boy was something I'd never thought I do. But I ran into him one day on a street corner in Memphis busking for money. His voice just made me melt. Then he offered to play a song for me if I'd sing it. It was "At Last" that song by Etta James. Then he played "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go," and then I knew right then and there that he was the one. He just had that look in his eyes like he'd just found something so important that he'd die for it. I can't forget that glow.

Joe: The soul in this song is raw and forceful. Just how we wanted it to be. Kate's voice is just amazing and gives me shivers. She's got that dark country tone that's just haunting as hell. But I can't say enough about my little woman's harmonies. It's magic just pure and absolute magic. She's got that kind of voice that you can see, hear, and feel. We're very proud of how it came out.

The Video:

However, bassist Mack Mackenzie has released a solo effort of his own that is more on the experimental and progressive side rather than having a folky approach. He's hired his friend and TMK's drummer Clyde Bonner to produce as well as help lay down some drum tracks when needed. So it's actually considered a solo effort by both musicians respectively. Mack had quite a lot to say on the release as well as Clyde.

Mack: I actually have a collection of 6, 9, and 11 string custom made bass guitars that I usually only play with in private settings. But I thought I should dust off some old pieces that I'd written for them but never recorded. I wanted it to be an experiment of sound with the bass that could stretch the listener's ear more making more than just one dimensional. So a lot of the pieces I did are very free flowing in composition and very liquid like if you could give the sound a consistency. Doing this is something I'm now looking back on and saying why didn't I do this sooner?

Clyde: Having your best friend ask you to record his album and assist on it is pretty much a given. I had to do it. But most of the time I just stood back in awe of him. Sometimes we don't realize how much talent or buddies have because we take it for granted so much. Everybody was blown away by Mack's solo work. He just completely blew us all out of the water.

Credit goes to the amazing real life bass guitarist of Nuclear Rabbit, Jean Baudin.

Johnny: So Mack's bass work is god like.

Joe: No, it's not god like, it's god incarnate on the bass.

Johnny: He's Zeus with a bass thunderbolt!

Joe: Thor with his mighty bass hammer!

Mack: I can hear valhalla calling me already guys.

Johnny: You'd bitch slap all the gods with your mighty bass!

Joe: Cower in fear all ye warriors and mighty ones!

Mack: You guys sure know how to stroke a dude's ego. I feel like I could fell hercules with one swing of my bass axe into his tiny balls.

OOC: Thanks for reading, those of you who have become fans of the band, and the writing. I was thinking about shelving them a while back but the comments have kept me going.

It seems that TMK's latest dvd release has been met with stellar sales than the band first anticipated. It has frontman Johnny McDougal excited an looking toward the future. He already has plans to release a deluxe edition of the dvd with more bonus content and interviews with family members. It will contain longer clips and a few full perfomances from their earlier days in high school. McDougal has also hinted at dropping few very rare Mudd Flap and The Cruzers recordings along with a secret video related to the band's pseudo-reunion as hidden easter eggs. The new album still hasn't hit the charts yet but he and the band remain optimistic about its upcoming release. He comments on the potential of lining up an alternative music festival in the wake of this.

Johnny: The dvd was released with a slight shrugging of the shoulders and nonchalance. We really released it for the fans but when we heard how well it was selling we were all very surprised. It had gotten good reviews from a lot of the big documentary critics and we were absolutely thrown by it. So we decided to go back to the drawing board on it and make a revised edition that was even better. The more die hard fans will definitely go after this release and we were happy to do it for g. There's some more stuff on there that they'll want to see.

As for the new album we are in agreement that it could be our breaking point where finally bust out of that glass ceiling and advance into the mainstream. It was a very arduous recording tha"t got more out of us than what we expected. This is what makes "The Water's Edge" our best album to date in our opinion. Having Jason Smith guest spot on two of the songs really catapulted it into another level. I honestly can't wait for this to hit the shelves and we blow everyone away. This album is dark, gritty, and captivating. It's something you wouldn't expect us to do. But we surprised ourselves on well we did it when we put it all together. Perfection like that is very rare.

After the album is released we've given serious thought to sponsoring a 3 day festival that will include mostly alternative, indie, and groups that are a bit under the radar to give them recognition. We plan to have it in a big field close to around where we live and give it that campy Bonaroo type vibe. We're also going to include acoustic acts as well. Not only do we want it to be a music festival there has been plans to include some of the arts as well. Though most of that part is going to be film and spoken word perhaps. We really want to do something different on the festival scene and have our own sort of SXSW Fest kind of going. We want to hire an MC to host the different events and all that. The driving idea is to have it in the fall as well. Because when's the last time anybody's headed out to big a fest in the fall? Half of the proceeds we make our going to a charity that TMK's started called "Sounds Like Change" which raises money to bring instruments and arts programs to more impoverished and inner city areas to the United States. We hope to expand this out to the U.K. very soon.

Johnny: Whatever you guys wanna wear is fine with us. A loin cloth and viking helmet totally works for you Erich.

Joe: Seeing Erica in a coconut bra and grass skirt would definitely be fine with me. I'll wear some snazzy pirate garb!

Johnny: I'll probably go 30s era gangster and rock some pintstripes.

Joe: Dressing up is so much fun! Wait.... will there be pudding?

Johnny: I've forgotten about your love for all things pudding.

Joe: Who doesn't love pudding?! You can't have a fest without pudding!

Johnny: You can't have your meat either.

Joe: Without pudding!

The spot for TMK's proposed music festival which is still un named has been picked out. However, details are still up in the air. Sponsors and acts are still needed for it. It's going to purely a festival for charity that the band has founded as well as going toward other philanthropic organizations.

Johnny: This festival has really become a project for us. We hope that we can gather enough support from sponsors and acts to have it come to fruition. Most of the proceeds from the festival will go to our charity as well as a few others. Because we think that spreading music and the arts programs to schools that are in need of them is wonderful gift. So if you're looking to make some cash then look else where. This is about the love of making music and the benefit of helping others that could really be better off by having such resources made available to them.

Joe: Growing up our school was very limited on music and arts type programs. There really wasn't much we could do and it would have been a great thing for us to have youth and after school type programs that really nurtured these ideas. We want other kids to have that luxury of having what we didn't. It can really influence budding artists and musicians so it's something that is of utmost importance to us.

Johnny: We're still hashing out the major details of the festival and discussing what kind of acts we want to bring to the bill. The idea is to bring alternative, acoustic, rock, and folk type groups on the schedule. Along with that we're still thinking of what to call it. But the most important thing is that it happens. I think it's time we give back to those that really need it. We as musicians really need to remember the bigger picture.

OOC Notice: My internet, or well person I was leeching from, didn't pay his bill or some thing. So I fixed the problem by buying my own internet! Smart huh?! Just saying TMK didn't die or anything. We're still here, some where, doing something.

Johnny McDougal speaks on the first 5 tracks of the band's breakthrough concept album "The Water's Edge." He also talks about the festival the band is still trying to organize, their tour with Mind, and the future plans for the band.

Track 1: The Water's Edge

The title track of the album of course sets up the entire story. Our protagonist witnesses an abduction that leads to a murder of a woman he barely knows. He struggles with the guilt of knowing what he had seen without doing anything to stop it. His fear of going to someone to tell what he has seen is because this woman's abductor's apparently know a lot of people. He's obviously very haunted by his guilt and is afraid to tell anyone. The song is very visceral and bleak. The ending is strong and emotional. This guy is lamenting the fact that he didn't do anything when he could have.

Track 2: Chloroform Feat. Jason Smith

We wanted this to be an entirely instrumental piece thrown in with some sound to set the tone of the song. We start out with the just sound of muffled screaming and whispering menacing voices. The sound of a door slams and you a hear a real violent screeching shriek that fades away with the sound of a van driving into the distance amidst rain and thunder. This was all done by Jason which did it justice. None of us our very good screamers, mostly growlers. But as it fades away it fades into a guitar solo that is rather floaty and technical but simple. We really wanted to build from slow to really visceral and sweepy with some crazy progressive rock noise. Jason, Joe, and I all did some guitar work that really played off of each other. It was the general idea to have one guitar go into the next without breaking the piece to stop. It's probably my favorite song on the album just because the way the guitar work was done was amazing as shit. Flawless. We wanted to stop there but I got the idea to make each guitar the woman's captors. So the solid stream of ebb and flow was broken up a bit at the end with each of us playing some noise and cohesive riffs at each other to sound like the guitars themselves were talking and whispering to each other. This is what turned the song into the master piece. There was method in this madness. We then dubbed each of us whispering incoherently over our guitar parts after the initial first stream of consciousness of the three of us playing as one stopped and faded out to a presumed ending.

Track 3: Katherine's Lament

The girl in the song didn't really have a name so we thought giving her one would humanize her more and have the listener sympathize with her a little more. We had Joe's wife sing her parts and she did it so beautifully. She visits our protagonist in what he perceives to be a lucid dream though he may have actually been awake the entire time. She laments over her loss of life and professes her anger at him for not doing anything to help her. Vowing to haunt his nights until he brings her killers to justice. We thought Katherine was a fitting name. It has an innocent and princess-esque like quality to it that seems suitable for a girl slain in such a brutal way. Joe's wife forced herself to cry at the end which topped the track's ending off perfectly. The dream like quality and the psychedelic symphonic overtures that we wrote up for Katherine's singing parts was an amazing piece of sound. Very almost, Pink Floyd like.

Track 4: Back Alleys and Bloodstains

Our protagonist goes back to the scene of the abduction and recounts in his head what he saw there. He considers his fate if he were to go to the authorities with what he knows. We're presented with an alternate reality where he pictures himself rescuing Katherine. What if he decided to confront the men himself and kill them in a vigilante act? Just as he's working up his nerve to do something about what he saw that night. He's attacked by the three men who beat him and leave him to die threatening his life as they leave him laying in his own blood. As he fades into unconsciousness he sees Katherine in the corner of his eye or does he. He has a vision of being held in her lap as he bleeds out from a serious head wound. She screams at him and he awakes still beaten and not sure what to do next. We started this out as a very intense instrumental that we wanted to build from intense into a slow melodic to accentuate the protagonist hero's slip into unconscious and dreamlike vision. Then have one intense blast of distortion at the end at his waking moment. There was just more noise work thrown it. A track of breathing, startling gasp to signal being awoke, then you hear our hero picking himself up off the ground and walking away followed by the whisper of passing cars. We really liked doing these instrumental pieces and substituting ambient noise for lyrics. It seemed more effective in the album's creative process as I look back on it.

Track 5: Stand Up, Sit Down, or Get Out

Our protagonist goes home and nurses his wound while thinking of what to do. He's still haunted by Katherine and wrestles with what he should do. Should he tell the authorities? Would they even believe the story of one man? The pros and cons of keeping quiet weigh on his mind as he realizes the outcome would mean he would be forever tormented if he chose to stay silent. Running and getting out of town would just prove similar. I love the line I wrote "I can run and live another life. Changing my name doesn't mean the faces will change. I still see her face, see their faces, and angry fists." He's afraid even if he runs he'll be found and possibly killed. He remembers advice from his father that a man can never run from fear. Facing it down and doing what is right is the answer to any tortured mind and heavy heart. He realizes that he must do the right thing. Because you can stand up for something, sit down and say nothing, or get out of town then pretend it never happened. But standing up for the right thing is always the answer. Sitting down or getting out is not the worth of a righteous man.

TMK's music festival starting to take more shape.

We're still working on the festival and have found a name for it. The Mountaintop Alternative Music and Arts Festival. Since the space we are having it on is actually on the top of a small mountain so to speak. As we've said most proceeds are going to out charity that supports arts and music in the schools so this is not a thing about being paid. We're taking mostly alternative and folk type acts so we're having a hard time finding artists to fit the bill. If anybody out there is interested in joining this fracas let us know and we'll be glad to fit you on the bill. We're gonna make it a two day deal. Also, if anybody wants to submit films or anything that's gonna be taken as well. We actually have nobody yet. But I've been looking at Mind as well Jason Smith's side project to headline the second day. We're probably taking the first day and have some surprises in store. We've even talked to Bruce Springsteen about co-headlining the first day. We wanted a real authentic folk rock act and couldn't think of anybody but the boss. Anyway it's still being worked out. We're probably going to take twelve bands total. 6 for each day. We're pretty excited about this. (OOC: Short films can be written by people who want throw in one shots and just write something interesting. I think it's a neat idea. Also can somebody make me a banner for this?)

Mind Tour and Future Plans. A name change coming?

Touring with Jason Smith and Mind was probably the highlight of our career that's up there with headlining Warped Tour. We had a hell of a time going through Europe and the States before dropping out around the South American run. We wanted to go back into working on getting the Mountaintop Fest in order so we needed to get back home to do so. But it's something we'll never forget or the mushroom tea incidents. It was a blast for us and we were privileged to share the bill with such talented artists.

After the tour we discussed a possibility of doing another concept album and threw around ideas about dear old Captain Showalter. But we decided on doing something a bit more easier before going into another project that would make our heads hurt and we wanted a bit of rest after the tour with Mind. So since we started out as a cover band we decided to make another cover album but the band as a whole had input into it. Joe and myself are usually the creative forces behind the band but we do realize we need to work as a unit or things could get stale. So we all discussed songs that were particularly meaningful and favorites of ours that we all enjoyed as a whole as well as individually. We all wrote down two songs a piece for each of us and kind went pot luck for the last two by throwing a bunch in the a hat then picking out two more. We each agreed to write the liner notes for each song individually about why we found it meaningful or why we liked it. I made it a point to express why it was liked individually then as a whole from where we as a band come in. It's something special that we think will help us grow more cohesive as a band and bring out better music. Sometimes I don't notice the things that the other guys in the band notice and it's really humbling sometimes to hear what we like about each other. Though the album is going to be called Under The Influence and it fits. Along with that I'm still producing my grandad's record though he wants to keep as a six track LP though I've tried to convince him that he has more to give. But he's a stubborn old coot. He says 6 is enough and he's written enough songs that he doesn't need an entire album to go under a new tour on. I have to say he's right. He's also slated to play solo with myself and his own backing band at the Mountaintop Fest. So I suggest you guys tune in if you really want to see a legend at work.

We also feel we've grown out of our teenage years somewhat but haven't really lost what we had when we were younger. It's still there but we feel we've matured enough with our sound to consider a name change. We've considered calling ourselves "Southland" since alot of our music focuses on that aspect really. Southtown was also considered as well. We're reaching out to our fans as well to see if they think we should go through with the name change as well as our fellow musicians. But we think the time
has come for such since the landscape of our music is changing.
