Aaron Marks Interview - "Sometimes I just think f**k it, you only live once"by Jonas Godward 21/07/11
We recently went to see Aaron Marks in the studio, to discuss his debut album, his image, and his hopes for the future, whilst also discovering his influences in music and hints at possible setlists for the Summer festivals.
NME: How are you Aaron?
Aaron: Yeah I'm good thanks, feel a bit tired and worn out, but that's to be expected when you spend the whole day writing music and doing nothing but that *laughs*NME: How's the recording process been? We've heard rumours that you've had a different approach to recording this album, rather than Getting Out [debut EP], is this true?
Aaron: Well... *pauses* yeah I guess so. I mean, when I was recording Getting Out I felt like I had pressure on me for the EP to sound good, so it had loads more stress behind getting it all sorted out and making it sound as good as possible. But with my debut album, it's had a more relaxed feel, me, Derek (Baker, purcussion), Gia and Damion Holmes (producers) just chill out and get bits done at a time.
NME: Would you say that this is also because your brother isn't involved in the production of the album?
Aaron: Possibly, I don't really compare the two session that often because they are both for different reasons and have had different amounts of time put behind them. With Kieran (Marks, producer/vocalist) it was about getting the EP done to show everyone what I sound like. But with this album its more about expanding on my ideas that I set down in the Getting Out EP and just seeing how I can expand it.
NME: So the album is going to be a mix of genres like Getting Out was?
Aaron: *Pauses*... I'd say so to a certain extent. It'll be different from Getting Out in that I've had different experiences of the music industry since the writting sessions for it, which occured before I was signed. That EP was influenced by acoustic pop artists such as NeverShoutNever and City & Colour, both of whom still influence me now, but I've also started to listen to a lot more Bloc Party and other indie rock bands, so that'll have an impact on the sound that the album will have. But yeah, overal it'll a lot like Getting Out.
NME: You're playing a few festivals over the Summer, what can be expected from you setlist/performance wise?
Aaron: It depends on the amount of time I get on stage, for the majority of my shows this year it'll be like 30 minute slots, which will mean 5/6 songs. For the festivals this summer I'll be playing at least one new song at each, and there is a chance of a cover, with the other songs being from the Getting Out EP. Then I have no idea what the setlist for my tour supporting Katie Coyle will be, but it'll be completely different what I've planned for the Summer.
NME: Onto another subject, your image is something different, explain it for us briefly..
Aaron: I like tattoos, piercings,in general, and I just wear whatever I like *laughs*... I do get some weird looks from people for some of my tattoos but I just think "F**k it, you only live once"
NME: One final question, what would you say are your goals for the future?
Aaron: Woah, big question *laughs*.. I'd say that my main goals for the future are to have a Top 20 single, a number one single would be even better but I'm doubting the chances of that. For me to develop as an artist, and to play headlining shows at huge venues like Brixton Academy or Camden Underground. Also wouldn't mind playing shows with a few of my favourite artists, like Ryan Ross Hernandez, Suburban Sunrise and The Jason Smith Band. But the most important out of those is the number one single, it'd be amazing.
