OOC: I have got to the point where I just want to get this out. I've worked hard on all of the tracks and have them all completed, so I want to get it out of the way.

Today, it starts. The track-by-track for Minds return album and what they consider to be their masterpiece.

1. Animus, Anima: The Coma Theory (2:21) (Experimental/ Avant-Garde)

Quiet synths fade into the foreground alongside some mechanical noises and crying. Many layers of random static and ambient white noise pop in for a few seconds before fading out again. Beneath these layers of noise, you can hear Jason sing the song in a mock sing-song voice, but with no melody to add to the background. Just random pitches. Once the singing has finished, Jason starts breathing heavily and distorted guitar noises start to enter the song. There is no melody still, but you can hear more conventional instruments now. A jungle drum enters loudly, as well as the increasingly louder sounds of a heart beating and extremely heavy breathing. The tension of this just rises gradually until everything explodes and a static scream can be heard. It then segues into the next song from this point, Jungle 55. This is a nightmarish intro, which sets the whole atmosphere and tone for the album.

(You’re not perfect.)
There are shoes on the table, a joker in the pack.
The salt was spilled and the mirror’s cracked.
There’s one lone magpie overhead.
And I’m not superstitious, the mother said.
No, I’m not superstitious, the mother said.
(You’re not... not perfect)

How quickly an idea planted can,
Take root and grow into a plan,
A thought conceived in this very room,
Grew as surely as a seed, in a mothers womb!

(You’re... not perf- perfect. You’re not perfect)

How quickly those who’ve made a pact,
Can come to overlook the fact.
Oh that the reckoning could be delayed,
But a debt is a debt. It must be paid.

(Perfect.)

2. Jungle 55 (6:08) (Mathcore/ Progressive Metal)

Starting with the remnants of the scream from the intro, Jungle 55 is one of the weirder songs on the album, definitely different from the traditional Mind opening song. After the scream, jungle drums can be heard, with a few multi-tracked voices in the background gutturally singing “Jungle 55”. They are produced so that they’re quite quiet, as opposed to distracting. Many distorted guitar layers then crash in. Some of them are reversed, some of them have considerable delay and reverb and some of them are pure noise. Overall, there are about 10 different guitar layers during this part, making it very complex. They are placed randomly, making it sound a bit like a darker, metallic Tomorrow Never Knows. After all these different guitar textures, everything quietens down so that you can only hear the jungle drums and Jason whispering “You are not perfect”. Everything then explodes in a huge wall of sound, with many people now chanting “Jungle 55!” in the background, complete with the muddled sounds of brass instruments and violins, making a clusterfuck of random noise. It then goes back to the quieter bit, and Jason whispers the first two lines of the first verse. After these two lines, he goes into screaming the last 3 lines of the verse viciously, with the main guitar playing a loud, complex riff and the rhythm playing a quieter combination of arpeggios. It then turns loud again, with the chanting, but with a choir vocalising operatically in the background as well. Huge walls of sound come and go in different varieties and samples from television programmes can be heard. The second verse is done in the same way as the first. One singular complex riff accompanied by a more simple rhythmic one can be heard in the “disappear again” part, with Jason singing in a dramatic, tense, high pitched voice. There are many polyrhythms to be heard and still a lot of emphasis on the wall of sound. The Theremin can be heard at some points, but fairly quietly in the background, more to work as a layer of sound against the actual music. This goes on 4 times, with different variations in noise in the background, until it suddenly goes to quiet jungle drum beats again. Jason then speaks the last verse in a tense tone, before an ambient segment plays the song out and fades it into The Concept of a Nightmare.

(Jungle 55, jungle 55, jungle 55, jungle 55...)

You are not perfect.

(Jungle 55, jungle 55, jungle 55, jungle 55...)
(Jungle 55, jungle 55, jungle 55, jungle 55...)

You can find heaven on the other side of your consciousness,
Left behind we are all that we need, all that we seek is conformity.
ALL THAT WE ARE!
ALL THAT WE NEED!
LEFT BEHIND, DROWNING IN APATHY!

(Jungle 55, jungle 55, jungle 55, jungle 55...)
(Jungle 55, jungle 55, jungle 55, jungle 55...)

You may find heaven through the neuron pathways created by the mind,
Left behind in seas of dirt we sail across the greatest oceans.
ALL THAT WE ARE!
ALL THAT WE NEED!
LEFT BEHIND, DROWNING IN APATHY!

Disappear again.
Remind me, how long has it been?
It’s good to see you home, my friend.
How long has it been?

Disappear again.
Remind me, how long has it been?
It’s good to see you home, my friend.
How long has it been?

Disappear again.
Remind me, how long has it been?
It’s good to see you home, my friend.
How long has it been?

Disappear again.
Remind me, how long has it been?
It’s good to see you home, my friend.
How long has it been?

All this silence.
Love is violence.
It’s control...
Jungle 55.

So, what does everyone think? Could this be Minds greatest achievement yet? Please feel free to leave comments.

Scott H: I love this already man. If this is your masterpiece, if you consider it better than your other stuff, then I just know it's going to be immense. "A debt is a debt. It must be paid", is some quality lyrical work! And that artwork is just lovely.

Jason: Thanks man! Yeah, out of all the things we've done, I consider this our magnum opus. I can't take COMPLETE credit for the lyrics, since a couple of lines were influenced by the play Blood Brothers, but thanks!

We're going to be doing them two by two, so that you can have the album quicker. We're nice guys.

3. The Concept of a Nightmare (4:54) (Technical Death Metal/ Symphonic Metal)

A driving, forceful combination of violins and war drums introduces, in a building crescendo and the tension is mounting. In the background, you can hear blast beats starting to fade in, alongside a heavy, groovy guitar. At approximately the 30 second mark, everything breaks down and it goes into an extremely technical, hard hitting and heavy riff. The drums are pure death metal, with slight grindcore and punk influences and with Harry playing a slap bass. After this intro is done, it turns faster, almost thrashy, and Jason lets out a massive bellow, with him yelping the lyrics of the chorus beneath it. This riff continues with different variations and a gallop develops. The violins and other orchestral instruments join in, such as brass, drums and a choir repeating the chorus slowly in the background to build tension. Jason then shouts the long segment in the middle, almost as if in a strained rant. Aaron plays a complicated mixture of arpeggios and power chords in the background whilst this happens. On his guitar, Jason plays alongside the gallop. Stevie is using the double-bass here quite extravagantly. After this part, it then goes back into a thrashy rhythm and subsequently a duel guitar solo, with a third guitar setting the rhythm in the background. This utilises Jasons triple-layered guitar technique of producing. The bridge is then shouted by Aaron and Harry, underneath another longer, more pained scream of Jason. Then, everything slows down, to a bluesy rhythm. A massive, epic, confusing guitar solo is played by Jason, reminiscent to something Pink Floyd may have done. This lasts for about 25 seconds, before it speeds up into the “hunt down” part, which consists of Jason having double tracked vocals for the entirety of the verse. It then goes back to the chorus, before violins play the song out amongst an electronic ticking in the background and demonic voices.

You fell from your perch on top of your sanity,
The only thing that exceeded your hate was your vanity,
So when I ask only this of your my dear,
I ask, can’t you see me standing right here?

You’re not perfect,
You will never be,
Your deceit, it knows no boundaries,
Your own futility,
This dream of yours is null and void,
You’re too pretentious to understand,
That knowledge and superiority,
Doesn’t even make a man,
The lucid power beckons,
Are you going to take the bait?
It seems the tide is turning,
In an awful twist of fate.
You will not be welcome,
You will not be free,
The only thing that will remain,
Is your curiosity,
You sicken to the stomach,
You chill to the bone,
Go ahead, I dare you,
Pick up the fucking phone.
Can you even be bothered?
Do you even care?
I am just stood here,
Waiting in your nightmare.

Go down!
Bow down!
To the gods that you’ve fabricated!
Go down!
Bow down!
Are you happy understanding yourself?
So you’d!
Love to!
Run from all the horror and the pain!
Hunt down!
Bow down!
WOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAH!!

You fell from your perch on top of your sanity,
The only thing that exceeded your hate was your vanity,
So when I ask only this of your my dear,
I ask, can’t you see me standing right here?

4. Sun Gods (5:37) (Experimental Rock/ Experimental Metal)

The sound of the wind gently blowing and slight laughs can be heard. Not sinister laughs, like you would expect, genuinely happy laughs. A quiet, subtle arpeggio sequence and relaxed ambient effects come into the song. An alternative rock riff and a drum beat then crash into the song, giving it quite a happy melody. It is slow, but fairly uplifting in a way. Then, everything apart from the arpeggios and drum beats drop out and Jason operatically sings the first and second verses, with a slight echo being put on the vocal tracks, making it feel airy and trippy. Then, a low-tuned riff comes in for a while, when Jason says the “curiosity killed the cat line” in a low, brooding voice, before everything comes back in loudly. The arpeggios are louder, the rhythm guitar has returned and the vocals are even more dramatic than before. This is the chorus. Lots of wall of sound effects can be heard fizzing in the background, as well as a simple piano piece with Jason humming the melody in a different vocal track. The next piece, the bridge, is darker, with a quieter, simple sparse melody on top of ambient tracks and nothing else. No percussion or bass at this part. Jason then mumbles through this part, in quite a creepy tone, before it returns back to normal in a happy arpeggio piece. The song continues as normal with 2 verses and a chorus, before Jason and Aaron have a guitar battle. It starts with Jason playing a complicated, cluttered sequence on an 8-string and then Aaron playing a bluesy solo on a normal guitar. This goes back and forth for a while, whilst Jason shouts the last line over the top of Aarons solo and then it starts to slowly fade out into the sounds heard at the beginning of the song. Very floaty.

I am flying again, but I’m going too close to the sun.
Just call me Icarus.
But I can see for miles and miles,
I can see for miles and miles.
And I am home.

It’s in my veins, I’m going too close to the edge,
Call me a junkie, whatever you want.
But I can finally open my eyes.
I can open my eyes,
And I am home.

If curiosity killed the cat, we better teach the cat to fight back.

Now we’re falling to the ground,
But I’m not even making a sound,
I am free! I am free!
I am home again!
I am free! I am free!
I am free to live again!

And what do you want from me?
I can only give hypocrisy.
My advice condescends and my mind has bent,
Yet I am free again.

Now we’re falling to the ground,
But I’m not even making a sound,
I am free! I am free!
I am home again!
I am free! I am free!
I am free to live again!

Free to live AGAIIIIIIIIIIIIN!!

5. Animus, Anima: To Hold All (6:55) (Ambient/ Ambient Rock)

A very simple C-B-C-G melody played sparsely can be heard about 10 seconds into the song after some ambient effects and another sample in the background. After another 10 seconds comes the melody again. It progressively becomes more normal and played at a normal rate, before the ambient effects are turned up. Over the top of the melody quietly sings Jason in a dark, creepy tone as if it was through a megaphone. The song is very relaxed. He sings like this through the entirety of the first verse. After the first verse, things get a little faster, but no louder. A different melody is played, with ghostly vocals singing the first line of the chorus. Jason then proceeds to sing the rest of the chorus in a quite uplifting way. Things go back to slower for the second verse, which is practically identical to the first, except with different lyrics. Once it goes to the chorus, things get a bit sprightlier, with light synths and sound segments raising the mood of it slightly, but everything else is exactly the same. After these choruses, the notes are extended on for about 10 seconds, and the mood darkens again. A quiet alternative riff then happens for the “go now” bit, although it is no louder and the vocals are no more obtrusive than elsewhere in the song. An ambient segment happens for about 30 seconds, which consists on light harps, violins and synths, before it returns back to the chorus, in a dark tone for 2 time again. It gets slightly louder for the next bit, the bridge, but it’s still the same riff. The vocals are slightly louder and more high pitched this time, but are still relaxed. More and more synths are piled on top of the song, as well as natural noises. After this, it goes into one more chorus, before the last 4 lines are whispered quietly beneath the layers of ambient, which then fade the song out.

Please don’t ask why...
We don’t need to fight,
Are we all?
Susceptible to light?
Please don’t cry...

(I am lost)
I am the one,
Who fought?
Beneath the sun,
And the air...

Tell me why,
We won’t fight.
Are you blind?
Can we fly?
Don’t cry...

(I am lost)
I am the one,
Who fought?
Beneath the sun,
And the air...

Go now, go now,
Go now, burn beneath the sun.
Go now, go now,
Go now, burn until you’re done.

(I am lost)
I am the one,
Who fought?
Beneath the sun,
And the air...

(I am lost)
I am the one,
Who fought?
Beneath the sun,
And the air...

Do you know what it’s like?
To hold all in your palm.
To hold your eyes in your arms.
Between the lies and the psalms.

(I am lost)
I am the one,
Who fought?
Beneath the sun,
And the air...

To hold all.
To hold all.
To hold all.
And I feel... awake.

AND ON TO SIDE 2!

Lacuna (9:54) (Avant-Garde Metal/ Experimental Metal)

Aggressive electronic segments with no melody or tune introduce this side along with distorted synths and evil, demonic vocalisations in the background. A massive drum segment then comes in followed by a fast-paced, complex riff from the rhythm, which is a bit like a demonic waltz. The drums furiously pound away as if they were black metal once the main riff, crazy tapping and sliding, bursts its way through. This song is utterly chaotic. Everything is just as manic when the first chorus comes in with Jason screaming it ferociously, possibly harder than he ever has before. After this first verse, he erupts a massive bellowing scream, which lasts for about 13 seconds as the riff changes to a simpler one, but still retains the heaviness at the same manic speed. It then goes into the next vocal segment, which consists of classically high pitched screams from Jason and manic vocalisations in the background, along with his traditional wall of sound production technique in full utility. It then goes back into the chorus, and the crazy riff returns alongside many different vocal tracks. Some are screaming, some are singing and some are growling. Then, in a clusterfuck of sound, all the guitars do one singular crazy melody, which is like a distorted arpeggio sequence, before it all cuts out into a simple acoustic melody, accompanied by soft drum beats, but still with an electronic bass. This then continues in polyrhythms as Jason sings the next two bits softly similar to that which you would find in traditional rock. At the end of the “Gaia” segment, many symphonic and orchestral instruments build up tension, as well as Jason screaming through a megaphone whilst they do so, until it all boils down into a simple marching riff, with no drumming or anything as a background. After the next two lines, it then goes into a crazy guitar solo with Jason speaking softly beneath it in a sinister tone. This lasts for quite a while, until the same polyrhythms as the acoustic part come back, except in heavy electrics this time. After that part, it then goes into a quiet reference to Jungle 55 with the drumming and Jason screaming beneath the layers of ambience, before everything slows down into an absolutely gargantuan riff, with massive drum beats and a complex bassline beneath it. Jason shouts the next part (“Are we free?”) in a similar manner to a dictator, whilst screaming and crying occurs underneath this. This extends the nightmarish feel. It then goes back through a crazy arpeggio sequence into the chorus near the beginning for one more refrain. Everything then cuts out into a music box, with a vocoded Jason singing quietly beneath an acoustic and a violin, in a sad manner. The song ends on the extended note of the music box.

Hey goodbye,
You know I tried,
But to my surprise,
This man is dying,
It's cold, so cold, my son.
Nothing ever bothers me now.

Your eyes are broken!
Vandalised by the truth, close them again,
Hide what shames you most,

For a closed eye is better than a broken one.
Your head softens; soften like the words from your mouth.
I am flying in a paper plane,
Shoot me down like you shot down your hopes.

Hey goodbye,
You know I tried,
But to my surprise,
This man is dying,
It's cold, so cold, my son.
Nothing ever bothers me now.

(I was aware I was dazed by the sonic stars,
Mountains crumble beyond the clouds,
So hey now, put your fear behind you,
For one by one, you will disperse with the sun.

Further, Gaia,
Wasting time and light in irony,
Oxygen thief, reach out for me.
One is Gaia, Gaia is me.)

Ready?

Moving out!

(We've finally found our own world, this is our night. We don't have to worry about whether it's wrong or right. Because for once, this is our night. In a few hours reality will creep back into our lives and attempt to suffocate what air we have left to breathe, but before that happens, I'm telling you now, this is our night. When the sun finally appears through the cracks of the curtains, just close your eyes, this is our night. And when a week has passed, and you're wishing you were back there, just remember, this is our night.)

Let’s take this down,
Let’s dredge ourselves into oblivion!
Let’s take this down.

(In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility - I welcome it.)

And now, the show begins...

Are we free? Are we hurt?
Are we deserving, or just deserved?
And our sentence, have we served?!
This is not what I was intended for!
Are we human? Are we dirt?
Are we the observing, or the observed?
We cannot overlook the fact that we all die eventually!
Use your time, and abide!

(Further, Gaia,
Wasting time and light in irony,
Oxygen thief, reach out for me.
One is Gaia, Gaia is ki.)

Hey goodbye,
You know I tried,
But to my surprise,
This man is dying,
It's cold, so cold, my son.
Nothing ever bothers me now.

A beautiful, evil winter’s day,
Turns into a greyer shade of grey.
Yet grey is grey anyway.
I’d rather not live any other way.
