On the eve of the release of an artist’s single you might expect them to be in some sort of place of residence anxiously waiting, or perhaps busy on tour, or maybe out doing promotional work for the single, or maybe having a few drinks and a celebration because their hard work is over. All of these are what would initially come to mind. Then there is reality. Reality is that, at least for the crunk, pop, hip hop, punk melting pot that is Nick Palmer. With the fate of his debut single fully out of his hands and soon to be hitting stores, Nick was not anxiously awaiting the release in some sort of place of residence, even though he was anxious. He was not out on tour, even though he was in a location where he could be on tour. He was also not celebrating, even though he had been very intoxicated. Nick Palmer was driving.

He didn’t know where he was going. Despite his best efforts he couldn’t quite think of where he was or how he had gotten there. He tried as hard as he could to make out his surroundings. It was dark. Around him he could tell that it was very mountainous. He looked anxiously around him. Slowly the seriousness of the situation dawned on him. He was lost.

It wasn’t just his location that made him feel lost. He didn’t recognize the clothes he was wearing. He couldn’t locate any of his personal belongings. His wallet, his phone, his ipod were all somewhere else. Finally he realized that the car where he was sitting and had glanced around for his belongings was unfamiliar. He was lost. His belongings appeared to be gone. He was in a car that was unrecognizable to him. Worst of all he had no idea how any of it had happened.

He continued driving. There weren’t any other cars on the horizon. He glanced at the clock. It was just after two am. He thought that as soon as there was an exit he would take it and find a town. From what he could tell he was driving up a mountain pass. As he drove he tried to think back to the last thing he could remember.

He recalled being home in Miami. He didn’t know how long ago. He had been finalizing tracks for his debut album. He remembered that something had gone wrong. What exactly had gone wrong he couldn’t put his finger on. Before that it had seemed as if it was coming together nicely. He remembered yelling and leaving in a rage.

Thinking harder he seemed to remember being in his car. He had been driving west. Whether or not he had had an ultimate destination in mind, Nick couldn’t remember. It seemed as if he had wanted to resolve something. Something had gone wrong and he had to fix it.

Slowly his memory came back to him. Details were still blurs, but he could remember where he was and a vague idea of why. He remembered driving through the south and some of the plains states. His instinct told him that his ultimate destination was California. He had been on his way to LA. Whatever his problem had been, the resolution was in Las Angeles.

He couldn’t remember much else. He was thinking harder. Had he been in his car when he left Miami? Had he been foolish enough to forget his belongings somewhere? Why had he needed to go to LA? Most importantly, where was he now? And why couldn’t he remember anything?

All of these thoughts caused him to lose his focus. His mind wasn’t in any way on the road. At the moment the road was relatively straight. There were no obstacles on it. Everything was ok. Roads however, are unpredictable. Mountain passes can be especially dangerous. There are sharp turns, wildlife, avalanches, and a whole plethora of things that could go wrong.

Nick though harder, trying to answer the questions that were spinning around his head. He didn't see the sudden turn in the road until it was seemingly too late. He made his best attempts to turn and stay in control of his vehicle. All he saw was a blur of what was illuminated by the slight moonlight and the car’s headlights, and then nothing. Everything went blank.

Nick woke up. The car he had been driving had spun off the road. Somehow it had managed to slide between two trees which obscured from the view of anyone driving on the road. He must have been knocked out for several hours because Nick could see the slightest bit of light on the horizon. The sun was beginning to rise.

He examined himself. THere was a bump on his head, and he had cuts here and there, but he couldn't tell that he had been seriously harmed. He stumbled slowly out of the car. After determining that nothing inside it would serve him any use, he walked over to the side of the road. As far as he could tell, there were still no cars traveling nearby on it. After deciding that the average person driving over some sort of mountain pass would probably not want to pick up a hitchhiker who had long vibrant red hair, and scratches scattered on his body, he made the decidion to begin walking.

As he walked h tried once more to recall exactly why he had been driving to LA, but he couldn't remember anything beyond what he had remembered while driving. However, now that he didn't have to attempt to focus on driving, he noticed his overall appearance. His shoes were the same white converse high tops that he had been wearing for years, but his pants and shirt were different. This struck a memory. Somehow he had lost all of his clothes apart from what he had been wearing. Then he remembered buying the clothes he was wearing now in some sort of city. His logic told him that it must have been Denver because he could remember driving through the plains states, and Denver was the first major city after them if you were going directly west. This led him to believe that he was currently walking down a pass somewhere in the rockie mountains.

He walked for quite a while. The sun was fully up and Nick guessed that it was mid morning. Then as he came around a curve in the road he saw it just down a hill. A town. It didn't look very large, but it was there and would do just fine as a place to stop and figure things out.

The walk down to the town didn't take too long. he decided to go into the first motel he saw and try to make a phone call. He walked inside. Looking around urgently he saw no payphone. There was a phone behind the desk, but an employee was chatting away. The motel was somewhat empty. Nick found a clock on the wall. It was 9:07 am.

He left the motel to seek a payphone elsewhere. He found a restaraunt where several people were eating their breakfast. He went inside. There in the corner was a payphone, and an older woman was busy talking on it. He started over towards it where he was going to wait, but before he got there he heard someone saying his name.

"Yes?," he said turning around. tHe few people who had heard him gave him a strange look. Then he saw the TV. It was some sort of morning news program. A young blonde woman was speaking. "The new story breaking at this very moment is that on the day of the release of his debut single, Nick Palmer, who was recently signed with Studio 60 records, has gone missing. Studio 60 Records and his closest friends and family both say that they hadn't heard from him in several days after he stormed out of the studio where he had been busy completing work on his debut album that is due out later this month."

Nick payed close attention. He was hoping perhaps that there would be more details, but the media knew less than he did. He turned around. The payphone was available. Nick rushed over to it. It was then that he realized the flaw in his plan. He had no money. He reached anxiously into his pockets. There was no money, but there was something. Nick pulled it out of his pocket. It was a photograph.

OOC: You're all too kind. Thanks very much. Expect the next and possibly final edition (depending on whether or not I get a stroke of genius) within the next few days or tonight if I stay up too late again. Like I said it all depends on if the creative parts of my mind are working or not.

Nick all of the sudden had this memory. It wasn't a memory of what had happened recently. It was from long ago. He remembered being a small child. It was at some point before his father had left. Nick had received a puzzle his dad. I was a simple jigsaw puzzle. At the time it had seemed massively difficult. He had spent hours trying to solve it. He remembered just not being able to quite get all of the pieces right. Then he had figured out where one piece went. Finding out where to put that one piece had resulted in Nick figuring out where all of the pieces went, and solving the puzzle.

He thought back. He thought hard. His mind was back in school. He didn't remember what grade, but he knew it was before 11th grade when he dropped out. His history teacher was talking about Albert Einstein. Albert Einstein who had in WWII wrote the letter to president Roosevelt that influenced him to start the Manhattan Project that would result in the creation of the atomic bomb. Albert Einstein who later said that doing this was a great mistake of his life.

Nick looked at the photograph and saw crazy grey haired face of Einstein looking up at him. This was like finding that piece of the puzzle when he was a kid. Beginning in what would become an endless wave of information crashing upon Nick's mind he began to remember all that had happened recently.

First he was in Miami. He had been finishing his album. He had hated it. The songs weren't bad. They just felt wrong and Nick had thought they were completely wrong for his debut album. He had gotten angry and stormed out. He didn't have money to fly, so he jumped in his car and began to drive to LA. He wanted to start fresh recording in a new city with new songs.

At first it had all gone smoothly. He had filled the tank whenever it was running low, drove until he felt drowsy and then slept until he felt like driving again. Nick's brother who had helped with the album had called when Nick was about 30 miles outside of Denver. He had said how Nick was making a massive mistake, and he needed to release the album. He said how he didn't want Nick to let all of their hard work and money go to waste.

Nick had thought about this for the next thirty miles. Then when he got to Denver he thought about it more in the first decent looking bar he could find. It had been by chance that as he turned to leave he had seen this photograph lying on the floor. He had easily related what he knew about Einstein to his situation. Einstein's letter was Nick's songs. It was no WWII and the atomic bomb, but Nick had ended up hating how his song's turned out. Now unlike Einstein he was trying to undo and find another way to go about things.

He had thought about that for a long while. He decided that to make full sense of it he had to have a few more drinks. What happened next was still hard to think of. Fully drunk he vaguely remembered somehow being convinced to sell his belongings. He had then bought the pants he was currently wearing. The rest was somewhat of a blur, but Nick knew he had somehow met some people and gone somewhere with them. The car must have been theirs and somehow he had ended up driving it alone. This brought him to the previous night when he had crashed.

Nick didn't know what to think of all of this. At the moment he didn't really care. Then out of the corner of his eye he saw a couple of quarters lying on the floor. They probably had been dropped by the elderly couple eating at a nearby table, but Nick didn't care. He picked them up, walked over to the payphone and dialed the first number he could think of...

13 Days Later

Nick sat in Las Angeles. He was in a small diner waiting patiently. His brother who had gone all the way out to Colorado to rescue him was due in the diner at any minute. The door opened and Nick looked up. It wasn't his brother. Nervously, Nick rubbed the photograph which he had carried with him since he had found it in his pocket all those days ago. His brother walked in. Nick stood up. "Let's go make some music," he said.
