I'm The Antidote, You're The Poison The Track The first song on the Big Light Show Demo, "Exploding Egos In The Night", is an angry pop-screamo/emo song. It is about being constantly put down by someone, being told that you're inferior, and being made to feel like that person is flowing through your system, restricting your potential. The track itself is very angry, which is why Cassie takes the lead with the vocals, her piercing, angry scream being far more prevalent in a song which is full of hatred and emotion. The song itself starts with an a cappella scream from Cassie before diving into a heavy guitar and drum breakdown. The first verse is then screamed in it's entirety, with short bursts of lyrics over short bursts of heavy riff. The final line is screamed in a way which emphasises every word as if it were on a different line. The choruses are all sung following a drum roll, which signals a more major key change. This is evident in every chorus, as we hear Lauren's very pop punk vocals, which play a foil to Cassie's scream very well indeed. And finally, the bridge is sung and screamed, as a mixture between the girls, before all music stops, replaced by Lauren's high pitched, beautifully toned voice, singing alone, breathing heavily into the microphone. This track shows a massive change from the normal MO of Big Light Show. But it is one that they hope will catch the attention of a record label at long last. Only The Wicked Rest The Track This track, the second on the demo, is a lot darker than the first. This time, the focus is on the girls, and how they feel about being the perpetrators of a fictional controlling relationship. There are feminist undertones to the songs, as, despite the fact that it shows remorse for being the uber-control freak in a decaying relationship, it also shows the strength that a woman can harbour, and that women don’t always have to be the “lower” partner in a relationship, playing second fiddle, emotionally, to a man. The song itself is heavier than the first as well. It starts with Cassie screaming over a fairly standard metalcore riff for the first line, which starts abruptly, with no intro, the vocals and music kicking in at the same time, before Lauren’s vocals come in over the same riff. This may sound obscure at first to have a pop-punk vocalist singing over a metalcore riff, but it definitely works, as Lauren displays her vocal range in the first few lines. The second half of the first verse (after the gap), is a lot slower, with the riff changing to a more standard pop-punk power chord progression than the start. After the “say one thing”…the music stops, and both girls sing (in their respective styles) the same last line, at the same time. One single “ding” on a cymbal welcomes in the chorus, which Cassie screams over an almost death core riff. The odd numbered lines are sung as two short-sharp individual bursts, whilst the even numbered lines are more of a standard rhythm. After the gap, the same riff applies until the last line, when the guitars stop, and only the drums and bass hit a note on every one of Cassie’s words. The “I’m so sorry” part starts with Lauren, very softly singing, almost whispering in fact, with no music accompanying her…and gets slightly louder before Cassie comes in, screaming the last line of the section, holding the note for about ten seconds, as a breakdown plays behind her mammoth scream. After this, a faster breakdown comes in as the chant-scream goes on (BMTH style) “Being…Awake etc etc” is sung by both girls, although Lauren very quietly. Then there is a chorus before the break down scream-chant comes back, with only Cassie vocalising this time, until it gradually fades. Cassie says: I like this song better than the first one. The first was all about anger, which I love, but this one is about power, and it has a real angst behind it as well. I love the chanting bit, and the chorus, which I wrote in its entirety, is obviously genius! Lauren says: This was actually the last song we wrote for the demo, and it was the first time Cassie and I saw eye-to-eye, so I think you can feel the song writing chemistry in this one. I think it gels together a lot better than before. I never thought I’d be doing songs like these in my life, but I have to admit, I really love this one.
