Welcome to the official web page of Madeleine Rameau - the French folk sensation!

Bonjour everyone! My name is Madeleine Rameau and I’m a French singer-songwriter. I have been busking on the streets of Paris for a few years now, ever since I was 17, and have attracted a bit of attention, but not enough to take me anywhere. That is, until, Jason Smith found me and thought I was quite good. With his approval, I hope to get a record deal and, you never know, I might actually do quite well in the music industry.

There isn’t much about my life that’s particularly interesting. I came from a normal French family from Paris and have had a pretty reasonable upbringing and with practically no musical background whatsoever. I am 20 years old, have 2 brothers yada yada yada... boooooooring. Anyway, I’ve set out a little Q&A to help you get to know me better.

Who are your influences?

I have many influences from all across the table really. Bob Dylan and Dave McPherson are probably the two that I try and base my work around the most. Since I am also a female folk artist, the obvious comparisons to Katie Coyle are inevitable, but I’m fine with that, since she too is quite a large influence on my work. I just make nice sounding music though really, I don’t try and base it on other peoples work.

So how did Jason Smith find you?

I was busking on the streets of Paris as usual, and he came down and listened to me playing a few songs. Of course, I was wondering whether he was either a crazy stalker or someone that might help me. Luckily, he was the latter. He asked me for one of my demos and I gave him one. He emailed me the next day, saying he liked it and would try and help me. I was ecstatic.

Does that mean you’re banging him?

No.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

Hopefully with a few big records and critical acclaim, but who knows. I just want to make music that I like and if other people like it, and I make money from it, well that’s just a bonus. To be honest, it’s futile to attempt to predict the future. It’s impossible. I can’t even honestly say where I think I’ll be.

So what about your new EP?

Ah yes, the Paris EP. All 4 songs on there are personal to me, even the cover. I chose them carefully out of my large catalogue since they were the ones that represented me best. The production isn’t great on it, but the songs are really heartfelt and emotional. The title track is about all my years on the streets of Paris, seeing life go by. Kissed by the Wind is a song I made when I first fell in love. Breakthrough is one of my favourite songs of all time and The World is Falling Apart is the song I made when I fell out of love.

So, what about your sexual-

No, I am not a lesbian. I know I look like one, but fuck off.

What’s your personal motto?

It sounds quite pessimistic, but “Hope for the best, expect the worse”. It’s helped me quite a bit actually.

The Paris EP is out now. Purchase it online here

1. Paris
2. Kissed by the Wind
3. Breakthrough (Katie Coyle cover)
4. The World is Falling Apart

Oh yeah, you can listen to Kissed by the Wind free now. It’s streaming just below.

Kissed by the Wind (3:42) (Folk/ Acoustic Pop)

A light sprinkle of synth introduces the song as you can hear some people speaking in French and a tambourine getting ready. Little bits of laughter then initiate a sprightly, cheery acoustic melody on the guitar. It’s fairly complex, but it’s still very catchy. The synths make a bit of a backdrop as the guitar drops into the forefront for the first verse amongst some other percussion instruments that give it a live, folky feel. The guitar mellows down to simple strumming with a crescendo of synths in the background as Madeleine starts to sing in a smooth, simple voice. The percussion instruments are nowhere to be heard. A lone violin can be audible a bit at this point, although not completely. The vocals are double tracked so that one layer is at the normal pitch and one is Madeleine showing off her vocal talent by singing in a higher register. As it comes to the chorus, another sprightly melody makes it at the forefront of the song, along with the lone violin playing a jolly tune. The percussion instruments are playing as usual again. It then goes back to the pre-verse melody at the beginning as the next verse begins in a similar manner to the first one. After this, it goes into the chorus part twice. It then goes into a small synth part with the guitar playing a more complex melody for the pre-bridge. Once it comes to the bridge, the guitar plays a relatively simple 4 chords, but ones that give the song even more emotion. It then goes into the chorus again, with the violin playing a more prominent role and an unknown French male singing in the background. It then goes into the second part of the bridge, which is much like the first part, except with Madeleine singing in a more raw, powerful and soulful voice contrasting with the other layer of vocals, which are nice and simple. Then, it once again goes into two choruses which are as normal. After the final chorus, it goes into the initial melody fading the song out, alongside more laughter and voices.

All I ever wanted was you,
Right here, right now, in my arms.
And my last breath will be right by your side,
As the sky is falling from the weight of my pride.

And I don’t know what to say, ‘cept you put me in a good mood.
And there’s nothing left to say, but you put me in a good mood.

All I can feel is you holding my hand,
Right now, I need you here.
The world is insane, but I’m not quite yet,
We’ll be looking back without regrets.

And I don’t know what to say, ‘cept you put me in a good mood.
And there’s nothing left to say, but you put me in a good mood.

And I don’t know what to say, ‘cept you put me in a good mood.
And there’s nothing left to say, but you put me in a good mood.

When it comes the time to confront the horizon,
I’ll make sure I’m coming home to you,
When I don’t know what to say about the dreams that I take hold of,
I’ll make sure that this, I’ll make sure of this, I’ll make sure...

And the world is falling down,
The architect’s home safe and sound,
Dreams pipe wrapped in a scroll,
I’ll make sure of this, I’ll make sure...

And I don’t know what to say, ‘cept you put me in a good mood.
And there’s nothing left to say, but you put me in a good mood.

And I don’t know what to say, ‘cept you put me in a good mood.
And there’s nothing left to say, but you put me in a good mood.

Ryan Ross Hernandez: I have yet to hear the EP, but I will give it a listen. I'm a huge fan of old-school folk music. I'm taking a turn into the folk world for my next album that's heavily inspired by Bob Dylan, Crosby, Stills & Nash. And obviously I am the biggest fan boy of Katie Coyle, so if you are influenced by both her and Dylan, I'm sure I will enjoy your music.

I have LOTS of very exciting pieces of news for you! One of them I will have to be quiet on though. I am touring with Mind for a start, which should be a lot of fun. I am also currently recording some new songs for you all with the assistance of Jason Smith. The last piece of news, as I said, will be revealed later. Au revoir!

So I wrote these new lyrics and didn't want to ruin the surprise... but ah well! This song is, at the moment, entitled The Great Collapse. It's one of my more melancholy ones. Enjoy!

I’d rather find Jesus, outside of a book...
The same thing goes for Robin Hood...
And you could fill up a lake with the tears of a crocodile,
As long as you promise you’ll make it worthwhile.

I cannot wait for the earthquake,
I cannot wait for my world to shake,
In the wake of the great collapse,
Between the heart and the synapse,
I promise you I will kill you right now.

I’d rather find heaven all on my own,
I loved you more than you ever know,
And you could fill up a lake with the tears of a crocodile,
As long as you promise you’ll make it worthwhile.

I cannot wait for the earthquake,
I cannot wait for my world to shake,
In the wake of the great collapse,
Between the heart and the synapse,
I promise you I will kill you right now.

I cannot wait for the earthquake,
I cannot wait for my world to shake,
In the wake of the great collapse,
Between the heart and the synapse,
I promise you I will kill you right now.

And when I’m done,
Pity myself,
I’d rather enlighten the dreams of the past,
I’d rather follow those who clean up the mess,
I’d rather yell through the great collapse...

I cannot wait for the earthquake,
I cannot wait for my world to shake,
In the wake of the great collapse,
Between the heart and the synapse,
I promise you I will kill you right now.

Someone hid the clue,
Someone got the axe,
Someone found Jesus,
Between hearts and the synapse,
Someone holds the one cure,
For the cancer that glows,
I only have one soul,
It’s not consolable.

I cannot wait for the earthquake,
I cannot wait for my world to shake,
In the wake of the great collapse,
Between the heart and the synapse,
I promise you I will kill you right now.

I promise you I will kill you right now...
Mail order brides, turtle necks and trophy wives.
It takes one to see the means to be,
The boy is of easy street.
