PANIC! Release Their Latest Song In Over Two Years, Happiness Is Something You Need

UserPostedImage

Released: August 11, 2011 (online)
Format: TBA
Recorded: June 2011
Genre: Alternative rock, indie rock, indie pop
Length: 5:12
Label: Chaos Records
Writer(s): Ashley Perry, Gabriel Hunter
Producer: Ryan Ross Hernandez, PANIC!

THE SONG

Fallen man's anthem “Happiness Is Something You Need” is a wrecking ball of determination that is firmly founded on the rolling drums, and the crunching guitars of Gabriel Hunter instrumentally, polishing their previous work in pop-punk, while diving for a stronger rock sound. The instrumentation is bold. When it hits the chorus at 50 seconds a wall of sound engulfs your ears. This track is full of anger and emotion and only gets better with every listen. The double-chorus slam of the song carries singer Ashley Perry to the front of the audience excitedly with her gruff declarations: “Let's agree that death is the final battle, we'll seat down and stare at the hourglass until the sand falls,” the singer declares in the second lead-in to the song's chorus section.

The song switches gears slightly and takes your view of PANIC! to another angle. You do not get much of a range from the vocalist, but she makes up for that with the different vocal styles she presents on the song. You already get the sense that PANIC! is still the multi-dimensional band even everyone loved years before, when you hear a experimental synths minute-long outro, with spot-on drumming near the end. As the powerfully moving, self identifying song gives such an exhaustingly pleasing performance the serious track's reverbed vocals joining the strange outro with such an upbeat set of instrumentation, as it flutters from each kit knock. After a few seconds of silence from the sea of sonic qualities, the song ends with a strangely placed drum machine final outro, provided by producer and former PANIC! member Ryan Ross Hernandez, oddly sounding like he has taken a page from Kanye West's “Love Lockdown”

BEYOND THE MUSIC

Ashley Perry:

"Everyone knows about the strife(s) the band had over the years. It's all been a process for us. From when Ryan [Ross Hernandez] left the band in 2008, to being pressured to create album when we knew the band was going through so much, to a hiatus that lasted longer than we had expected as well as losing three more members. In my eyes, this song is a huge turning point for the band. The truth of it is, growing up is not easy, especially when you have to do it with a certain attention on you all the time. There were a lot of times when I felt really alone or angry or insecure. I don't always feel good at confronting people, especially people that I love, like all the members that have come and gone during the course of this band. Sometimes it takes songs to get the point across. I know I'm pointing people out in specific in this song, but I'm being honest. I think it would be more unfair for our fans if we just came back and our first song back didn't mention the problems they've seen the band have over the years."

Lyrics:

Let's paint the walls and tell everyone we're okay
Sniff the ceiling paint and fall asleep to the sound of passing cars
Sing me a song, if it makes a difference these days I'm heartless
Give me a box of matches and I will burn this town to shreds

I'm not a savior and I'm not a prophet
I burnt all the pictures that had the six of us smiling
The fondness in my heart turned into the darkness in your eyes
We're just trying to keep our heads down
So no one remembers the stories we once told

Take my heart and do whatever you please
For everyone I've once lost, a new one has come along
The best way to treat your problems is to keep them stuck in your head
And just swallow your fears
My body is still aching from the aftershock of yearning

Find me a place where my mind is a quiet haven
Change, is never coming 'cause it doesn't exist
Lately the talk hasn't changed much
I just need an ambien so I can put my mind to rest

Find me a place where my mind is a quiet haven
Change, is never coming 'cause it doesn't exist
Lately, the talk hasn't changed much
I just need an ambien so I can put my mind to rest for the day

Let's agree that death is the final battle
We'll seat down and stare at the hourglass until the sand falls
I already have a plus-one in the afterlife
So I'll stand up today and face the day with a grin

Find me a place where my mind is a quiet haven
Change, is never coming 'cause it doesn't exist
Lately the talk hasn't changed much
I just need an ambien so I can put my mind to rest

Find me a place where my mind is a quiet haven
Change, is never coming 'cause it doesn't exist
Lately, the talk hasn't changed much
I just need an ambien so I can put my mind to rest for a little while

Take my heart and do whatever you please
For everyone I've once lost, a new one has come along
The best way to treat your problems is to keep them stuck in your head
And just swallow your fears
My body is still aching from the aftershock of yearning

I can't breathe
I'm losing the battle in my head
I forgot the day I still had faith

Oh... the fight is over
Oh... the fight is over
Oh... the fight is over
Oh... the fight is over
Oh... the fight is over
The fight is over now, now, now, now, now [until fade]

Ashley: Thank you! I mean Hernandez is okay, a little overrated if you ask me, haha. I'm glad you like it, we were worried about being a bit rusty after staying out of the scene for the last two years. But we love the song and think that it's the perfect way to let people know that, the exclamation point is back in the music industry. Hopefully the fans enjoy it too. :)

OOC: Thanks to both of you. I always get worried about how the lyrics will be received since this is just the second full song I've written, other than the snippets of lyrics I've made for RRH songs to use when I write his live performances, I don't have much experience in songwriting.

OOC: Thank you all. It really means a lot that it's getting a positive response. Except to see lyrics for all songs from one of my characters from here on out.

Billie Beckett: My favorite band from way back in the day, by that I mean about four years ago is back. Thanks for existing, and great songs!

OOC: I think everyone kind of covered how this is fantastic, so instead of sounding like a broken record or spending too long thinking of something creative to say, I'll just say that I agree.

OOC: Thanks the continued praise. I am self-aware and there are a few things that tick me when I look back at the lyrics and such, but I still do think I'm lacking a bit of PANIC! muse. Which hopefully I gain again, as time goes on.
