21st IMA's - Riot! In The Boulevard Performance



The lights soften all around and the applause of the audience begin to fade as the next band are announced, “LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, RIOT! IN THE BOULEVARD.” as the band are stood at the centre stage, the drummer Nathan Mullen begins the music with four very loud drum beats as Jason Greenberg begins the bass-line intro to the band’s number 2 hit, Sweet Little Fantasy’s and as Justin Mullen kicks the band into full gear with his electric guitar, it seems that Amy isn’t onstage yet, but the band seem unfazed by this, maybe it was pre-arranged and as the music comes towards the first lines of the song lead singer, Amy Meyer comes running across the front of the stage with a microphone in her hand, she makes her way across the catwalk type runway and begins singing.

It’s pretty clear that this feisty young woman has a lot of energy and it’s also pretty clear that she likes to stand out from the crowd, tonight is no different. Wearing bright yellow jeans and her highly recognizable red hair, she shouts to the audience, “How Is Everyone Doing Tonight?.” before making her way back to the centre stage for the chorus of the song.

As the song ends Amy stops and encourages the fans into a massive sing-along to the chorus of the Leonard Cohen version of Hallelujah, with one arm held in the air she waves it from side to side, all the while singing.

And before she leaves the stage with her band she thanks the crowd. “Thank you everyone and have a kick ass evening.”

Sunday 12, June 2011 - Field Trip Festival
Riot! In The Boulevard



As the previous act leaves the stage, about 5 minutes pass before the next band arrive onstage, drummer Nathan Mullen arrives first, he sticks his thumbs up at the crowd and makes his way over to the drum kit located near the back of the stage, he sits down and starts a drum roll beat. Out walks Jason Greenberg holding his Bass guitar, he waves at the crowd and begins to play a familiar bass intro and as the drums and bass begin to get quicker, pyro sparks fly from the roof of the stage as Justin Mullen runs out onto the stage playing his guitar, accompanied by Amy Meyer.
As she reaches the microphone, the band are now in full swing, playing the highly recognizable introduction to the bands number two hit, Sweet Little Fantasy’s, Amy takes hold of the microphone and shouts, “SOMERSET, I WANNA HEAR YOU SCREAM!!!” as the crowd then erupts as she begins singing the first verse.

Amy Meyer and Justin Mullen are constantly moving around stage in an energetic fashion and as Amy runs back and forth between the band and the front of the stage she screams for the crowd to sing the chorus with her and as it arrives, the place erupts as they sing in unison.

She continue’s to sing and move around the stage throughout the song and the crowd revel in her energetic stage presence as it’s almost a sea of people jumping up and down and cheering for the still relatively new band, but having been in the UK for the best part of two months, the band clearly have a following.
As the song ends, the place briefly goes quiet before the band quickly begin the intro to the next song, their second single, All The Non Believers begins as Amy sings.

She pauses briefly and directs the microphone towards the crowd for them to sing the next part of the song, the crowd oblige as they sing.

Amy then takes the microphone and sings along with the crowd for the rest of the song, jumping up and down and running around the stage with guitarist Justin Mullen.

The crowd are at fever pitch already, twinned with the fact that the band are in very lively form and also the fact that they opened with their two biggest songs, the crowd goes silent as the song ends and they remain fairly silent for the next song which is a much more softer, emotional song. Amy takes the microphone and sits on the edge of the stage as she sings the next song in a softer vocal range.

She pauses briefly and then stands to her feet, she makes her way back to the centre of the stage and shouts, “One, Two, One, Two, Three, Four.” and begins to jump up and down and continue’s singing.

As the song finishes, she walks over to the side of the stage and disappears briefly, then returning holding an acoustic guitar. She walks over to the centre stage and turns and looks at drummer Nathan Mullen and nods at him, cueing him to begin a soft drum beat, before turning to the crowd, she adjusts the microphone and begins to talk. “Have you all had a good weekend … We got one more song for you … it’s the first time we’ve performed it live, so here we go … This is called A Moment, An Hour, A Lifetime” She smiles and nods at Justin and Jason as she begins to play the acoustic guitar, she then begins to sing.

She steps to the edge of the stage with Justin Mullen and leans in closer towards him, she holds the microphone close to each other and the two sing in unison, as the crowd cheers frantically.

She continues to sing throughout the song and continues to move back and forth across the stage very energetically. She jumps up and down, encouraging the crowd to join in and as the song draws closer to the end, she stretches her arms out as wide, the band play out the rest of the song and Amy moves puts the microphone back in the stand. Once the music finishes she adjusts the microphone and begins talking. “Thank you all for coming out, it’s been an amazing time out here playing for you all. I hope you’ve all enjoyed the weekend as much as I have. Thank you, We love you all.”
The band make their way out to the centre of the stage and stand hand in hand and take a bow in front of the crowd, before leaving backstage.

Riot! In The Boulevard walk out onstage one by one, beginning with drummer Nathan Mullen, quickly followed by his brother Justin Mullen and then Jason Greenberg and finally Amy Meyer they all look surprised at the sheer magnitude of the gig, over eighty thousand people are here tonight and the band look a little nervous but quite excited by this prospect, they’ve performed at big events in the past few months but have always been a lot lower on the bill, today is different, they have more time and freedom tonight as they’re one of the main acts at the three day festival, as the band get themselves into place and start to adjust their instruments, Amy Meyer takes the microphone and runs out to the edge of the stage, “BARCELONA!!! How you doing tonight?” she pauses briefly before shouting, “1, 2, 3, 4!!!” as the band kicks into action and begins the intro to Sweet Little Fantasy’s as Amy starts to run across the stage and sings.

The crowd hit fever pitch already and sing along to the band’s debut single with its catchy chorus providing a perfect introduction for the bands performance today. As the music slows down and the song fades out as the band quickly play into the next song as Amy shouts, “Mona Lisa Where Are You??” she begins singing.

During the song, Amy only stops briefly to shout, “BARCELONA!!!” as she runs around the stage in expected energetic fashion, jumping up and down and running from side to side, she waves her arms back and forth to encourage the crowd to do so, it creates the perfect atmosphere for the band already as she begin to play into the next song, it’s a slightly less rambunctious performance as the song is slightly softer, Amy shows that she can also sing a soft melody just as well as anyone on Kiss Goodbye To The Harvest Moon.

The band pauses briefly which gives them the change to take a quick drink and adjust their instruments for the next song, as Jason Greenberg begins to play a soft bass intro, Amy is crouching at the centre of the stage and as the drum beats begin and the guitar intro from Justin begins, Amy jumps in the air and screams, “All Is Fair In Love And War!!!” and she starts singing with her trademark energy.

As the song ends, the band pauses once more briefly and Amy begins to sing an acapella intro to The Echoes Of My Soul. The band then quickly join in with thrashing drums and a powerful guitar performance from Justin Mullen and Jason Greenberg, providing a fiery rendition of the song.

As the song finishes, Amy walks to the very edge of the stage and puts her finger on her lips and whispers, “sshhhhhh.” The crowd go almost completely silent as Amy indulges and starts to look around the crowd, she looks at the faces of the crowd in the first few rows, and then steps back slightly before shouting at the top of her voice, “ARE WE THE NON-BELIEVERS!!!” the band then thrash their way into the song as Amy sings along with the crowd on the bands huge number 1 hit.

As the song ends, the band make their way to the centre of the stage and take a quick bow before they leave the stage, the crowd erupts in an attempt to get the band back and after about 30 seconds Amy Meyer and Justin Mullen return to the stage, Justin returns with an acoustic guitar and Amy puts her arm around his shoulders as he begins to play and she begins to sing, A Moment, An Hour, A Lifetime.

A clearly emotional and teary eyed Amy Meyer finished the song and looks at the sky, the crowd’s cheers providing the perfect backdrop for her emotions and as she looks out at the huge capacity crowd, she raises a little smile and runs her hands through her hair, Justin moves closer to Amy and puts his arm around her and whispers something in her ear, she looks at him and smiles, Justin kisses her on the cheek and then takes her hand and raises it in the air and encourages the crowd to cheer even louder for her, she smiles a little more and looks at Justin once more before wrapping her arms around him tightly, She takes
the microphone and shouts, “Gracias Barcelona, Te Amo, Te Amo, Te Amo.” Before leaving the stage.

The sell-out crowd at Wembley Stadium all await in anticipation of the next band, they remain in high spirits as they await the announcement, moments pass before a voice comes over the tanoy system, it’s not the regular announcers voice, it’s the voice of Riot! In The Boulevard’s teenage singer Amy Meyer. The crowd erupts she can be heard shouting, “WEMBLEY!!! ARE YOU READY FOR A DAMN RIOT!.” And with that the band come running out onstage with Amy being the last to arrive behind Justin, Nathan and Jason. She runs to the centre stage and stands on top of the amp located at the front of the stage, she looks around briefly and stretches her arms out as wide as they can reach. She turns and looks at the band before nodding her head, she then jumps down from the amp and takes the microphone as the band begin playing some filler music.

Thoughts Like This

She shouts to make herself heard over the noise of the crowd, “YOU GUYS ENJOYING YOURSELF?” she pauses briefly as the crowd erupts once more. “WE’RE RIOT! IN THE BOULEVARD FROM LAS VEGAS, NEVADA AND WE’RE HERE TO ROCK YOUR WORLD.” she jumps up and down briefly before the band begin the intro to the first song, “THIS IS CALLED … THOUGHTS LIKE THIS!!!”

Jason begins the familiar bass intro to the bands album opener as Amy begins to run around the stage as the music plays, she starts waving her arms in the air, encouraging the crowd to copy her which they oblige to as she begins singing.

She pauses briefly and walks back over to the centre stage, she stands next to her bassist Jason Greenberg and guitarist Justin Mullen, They all look at each other while continuing to play, Amy takes a step back and then runs forward, right up to the edge of the stage, she shout, “WEMBLEY!!! SING!!!” as she directs the microphone to the crowd for the end of the song.

As Jason and Justin swap instruments with the guitar techs standing at the side of the stage, Amy sits on the large amp located at the front of the stage, she introduces the song, “This is All The Non Believers.“ she begins singing accapella, while the band start to make their way back into position.

The band then begin playing the song as Amy stands to her feet and starts running back and forth across the stage, waving her arms in the air, Amy and Justin start directly running towards each other only moving in different directions as they pass each other, inches away from bumping into each other, they continue to do this during a bass solo from Jason Greenberg and then Amy stops to sing out the rest of the song.

As Justin switches to an acoustic guitar for the next two songs, Jason Greenberg begins the bass intro to the song, quickly followed by the drums provided by Nathan Mullen. Justin begins playing the acoustic guitar on the song which is given a softer sound compared to the version that featured on their debut album, Amy spins around in the centre of the stage, after two full rotations she moves over to the microphone stand, she holds it in the air before bringing it down closer to her mouth as she begins to sing.

The band continue to perform but the song has became more softer and emotional without Justin’s electric guitar, instead the acoustic guitar gives it something a little deeper and more meaningful, the band continue to play as Amy continue’s to run around the stage, her energetic persona on stage has given the crowd an entertaining set. She stops running around as she continue’s to sing.

Amy takes a quick drink of water as the band play a music filler briefly, She then steps back up to the microphone to sing along to the chorus, she encourages the crowd to wave their arms back and forth, creating a wave like effect as she sings the chorus.

The band return to playing fully electric for the next song, the band’s liveliest song yet. Amy steps up to the centre of the stage and shouts into the audience, “WEMBLEY, YOU’VE BEEN AMAZING!!!” she pauses, “BEFORE WE GO, WE’VE GOT ONE MORE SONG FOR YOU.” she pauses again as the crowd cheers, “ARE YOU READY … FOR SOME SWEET LITTLE FANTASY’S!!!” the crowd erupts as they play their most well known song, the band kick into full gear and Amy begins singing in typically energetic fashion.

She moves around the stage again, this time bringing both Jason and Justin to the very edge of the stage as they continue to play, the crowd from the front row are throwing their hands in the air in an attempt to touch the band members, they start to move further back to their original positions as Amy runs forward and starts singing.

As the crowd reach fever pitch Amy continues to see out the rest of the song, Jason and Justin stand side by side with Amy standing in the middle of them both, Nathan performs a brief drum solo as the band then play the final piece of the song.

The band end the song on a perfect high, Amy, Justin, Jason and Nathan all make their way out to the centre of the stage and take a bow, Justin, Jason and Nathan all quickly leave the stage as Amy climbs on top of the amp as the stage lights shine down on Amy Meyer, she takes another bow and shouts, “THANK YOU WEMBLEY, GOODNIGHT.”

The Rules Of Love And The Games You Play/The Echoes Of My Soul/All The Stars And Boulevards



As the audience slowly quieten down a little after the emphatic nature of the previous song, Nathan Mullen begins to play a loud and adventurous drum solo or could perhaps be seen as an extended introduction to the next song and after almost three minutes of freestyle drumming, Adam Benjamin joins in as he plays the opening riff to the next song on his guitar and is quickly joined by Justin and Jason which concludes the extended introduction and has now became what is a familiar opening, particularly to the die-hard ‘Riot! In The Boulevard’ fans that are in the audience, as the song progresses towards the opening lyrics of the song, Amy is sat on an amplifier as begins singing the opening lyrics, although it’s more like she’s talking fast rather than singing on the first verse of the song;

“My mind is in a different place these days/It’s like I’m tangled in your web and I can’t get out
I’m losing strength right now and I’m struggling to shout/Because I just can’t seem to figure you out
One moment you’re crazy about me/And the next I barely seem to exist
One moment, you wrap your arms around me/Then your pulling away from my lips
I’m just worried of losing you/It’s not something that I’d choose to do
I’m trying my hardest right now, but it looks like I’m gonna lose/It seems like I’m not enough anymore”

As the band slow down the pace of the song, almost to a standstill, Amy takes the instrumental break as an opportunity to address the song and perhaps even an insight into her own deep lying emotions, she raises her head slightly, not quite managing to out on a smile in this moment as she says, “It’s funny how your own song lyrics can come back to haunt you, huh?” She stands up from the amplifier and walks backwards slightly, closer to Adam, Justin and Jason and shouts, “Let’s do this!” and they begin to play with a heavier and more raucous rock sound as the chorus arrives, Amy begins jumping up and down and moving around the stage as she starts to scream out the chorus;

“These are the rules of love and the games you play/It drives me crazy every single day
But I guess these are the rules of love and the games you play/If we’re gonna be together then I’ll have to get used to it someday
I’m just worried of losing you/Because that’s not something I’d choose to do
I’m trying my hardest but it’s getting too tough/It seems like maybe I’m not enough”

She stops jumping up and down and moving around with energy as the music breaks down for a brief moment for the next small set of lyrics, she edges closer and closer to the front of the stage and addresses the audience, “These words are probably the most important and honest words that I’ve ever written in my life, and sometimes it doesn’t have to be articulate or deep and meaningful and full of metaphors, sometimes it’s just gotta be honest and real and this next line is very real to me … so I’m gonna need you to help me sing them, if you know them.” She closes her eyes, clearly gripping the microphone tightly as she prepares herself for the next set of lyrics, she opens her mouth and bellows out the following words, “Love is a word that can die/if we use it too much/But you see, the problem is/We don’t use it nearly enough” she opens her eyes again and smiles as she was joined once more in chorus by the vast majority of the crowd, the band play out the rest of the song with their trademark energy and enthusiasm.



Adam Benjamin walks over towards the front of the stage with his guitar hanging low over his shoulders, he continues to walk forward and begins playing a powerful opening guitar riff as he stands next to Amy, she watches him play the opening guitar riff and turns to signal the drum beat from Nathan, as the drum beat begins Justin and Jason start playing their guitar parts of the song, Amy stands confidently, her small frame looking incredible out shadowed by the magnitude of the audience in front of her and the huge stage that herself and her band mates have inhabited for the evening’s entertainment, she lifts the red microphone up towards her mouth and starts swinging her arm in the air while she begins singing the opening lines to the song with the fiery nature that we’ve come to expect;

“A huge insecurity burning deep inside/As I try to bury this pain, it’s impossible to hide
Instead they move up to the surface, threatening to break free/Threatening to tell the world, who I used to be
Is this pain really here, or is it all in my head/Will this worry last, I could tell the world instead
It brings me back to that place and the truth I have to face/Instead of living, I’m dying slow, instead of coming, I’ve gotta go”

She shouts out the words to the backdrop of the screaming audience and powerfully intense guitar riffs, she raises her hand in the air and shakes her head up and down, as the music progress she runs to the left side of the stage and encourages the audience to jump up and down, as they respond emphatically by doing so, she then runs across to the right side of the stage and encourages those in that vicinity to do the same and they respond in the same way. With a smile on her face she makes her way back to the center of the stage and begins jumping up and down along with the vast majority of the crowd as she starts singing once more;

“So if you believe what you want/Can someday come true
Open your heart and mind to the possibility of it all/And it will make its way to you
You may get what your wishing for as long as you believe/So make a wish and you will receive
The world is full of magic, if you open up your mind/You could be surprised with what you see
Surprised with what you find/So this is not the end of your dreams, this is just the start
Believe in the echoes of your soul/Believe it with all of your heart.”

The previous song ends on a sombre note as the music slowly and softly fades out before the guitarists rapidly play into the opening of the next song, another from their self-titled debut and it’s energy and modern guitar sounds mix perfectly with its lyrics and tender but fiery lead vocals from Amy. Jason, Adam and Justin use the stage to its fullest as they move around with confidence and as Adam and Justin run past each other and entertain the left side of the audience and the right side of the audience respectively, Amy stands center stage and begins jumping up and down and run back and forth slightly as she sings the opening lyrics to the song along with the audience;

“Sleeping on the grass, looking up at the moon/Letting my mind wander free tonight because we’ll be gone soon
So sit beside me and we’ll sing underneath the stars/I’ll give you the backing vocals, you can play guitar
A Loveletter unopened, is a Loveletter unwritten/It’s not vampire’s and werewolf’s I refuse to be bitten
So with a heart of stone, I will soon die/Will I buried in the ground or an angel in the sky

A blistering guitar solo mid-way through the song by Justin Mullen has the audience cheering hugely and jumping up and down as the attention falls onto another member of the band other than Amy, something that has happened more often since the release of their debut album but of course it isn’t long until the spotlight falls back onto the red-haired starlet standing front and center but it seems like the band are comfortable with that, in fact it appears that the rest of the band prefer it that way as it gives a freedom for the rest of the group to express themselves without any pressure, as the guitar solo ends and the instrumentation gets back on track for the chorus, Amy takes the reigns once more and encourages the audience to “Scream so loud that everybody back home can hear you tonight!”;

“Some say love can conquer all/But it seems to set you up to fall
So forgive me for being heartless to you/But it’s for your own good, at least I’m being true
I’m gonna be leaving here tomorrow/So forget about me, forget about your sorrow
I’ll kiss you once, before I go/But after that, it’s no more

All the stars and boulevards/All the stars and boulevards”

As the guitar parts end along with Amy and the crowd’s vocals, it’s just left to the crashing of the drum cymbals to signal the very end of the song and with three powerful strikes the song ends and with it also seemingly the performance from ‘Riot! In The Boulevard’. Amy steps backwards a little and raises her arms out and is quickly accompanied by Jason and Justin on her left and Adam and Nathan on her right, they have their arms outstretched and connection together as they take a couple of steps forward to bask in their triumphant headlining set and they take a bow amidst the roaring cheers from the capacity crowd with huge expressive smiles on their faces as they leave the stage one by one, each of them raising their hands in appreciation of the efforts put in by the crowd the likely happens as they bellow out the name and begin chanting ‘Riot!’ in their large numbers.


All The Non-Believers/Sweet Little Fantasy’s



A couple of moments pass before Amy makes her way back onto the stage, she stands on one of the amplifiers at the front of the stage and sways her arms back and forth before bringing the microphone up to her mouth, “England!” she roars, “You’ve been truly incredible tonight and we cannot thank you enough for sticking with us throughout the past three hours, this has been the most incredible experience we’ve had so far as a band and it’s really all down to you.” She smiles widely, “But we ain’t done yet!” she yells as the crowd erupt, “So I just wanna introduce you all to the best musicians you’ll ever find.” She laughs as the crowd cheer once more, “On drums is the guy who weighed almost 400 pounds when I first met him, but look at him now, rocking out on the drums in front of 150,000 people, ladies and gentlemen … Nathan Mullen!” She screams as Nathan runs back out onstage without a t-shirt this time, he assembles himself at his drum kit and begins to play a drum roll while Amy addresses the crowd.
“On bass guitar is without doubt the coolest man I’ve ever had the privilege of meeting, he’s introduced me to some of the best rock music I’ve ever heard over the years, the amazing … Jason Greenberg!” the crowd cheer again as Jason runs out onstage and begins to play a bass line along with Nathan’s drumroll.
“This next guy is probably one of the most quiet people I’ve ever known, he’s not afraid to voice his opinion and stand up for what he believes in and even though sometimes it’s caused friction between us both I would not have him any other way, we love this guy with all of our hearts, so please give it up for … Justin Mullen!” again the crowd cheer as Justin walks out onstage with his guitar, he walks over towards Amy and gives her a hug and a kiss on the cheek and he then walks across to the left of the stage and begins to play a guitar riff alongside the others.
“And finally, he’s the best friend anyone could possibly ask for, he’s one of the funniest guys you’ll ever meet and when you’re feeling lonely and homesick while touring he’s always there with a hug and a smile, he’s also the saviour of the band. Put your hands together for the wonderful … Adam Benjamin!” the crowd erupt into cheers as he runs out to the center of the stage and begins to play the opening riff to the next song.
Amy begins jumping up and down along with the crowd in front of her and starts singing;

Don’t ever worry, I’ll be around/I’ll come pick you up when you’re feeling down
And here’s something’s that I’ll say/Don’t ever lose hope, don’t ever worry

Amy then runs towards the drum kit and stars jumping up and down, before running from right to left across the stage and throwing her head back and forth as if she was standing in a mosh pit rocking out to her favourite band, the audience are now jumping up and down furiously which is incredible considering how energetic they’ve been throughout the performance and the fact that we’re coming up towards midnight but their energy levels along with the band’s haven’t wavered at any point during this mammoth set and they show no sign of letting up as Amy bellows out the chorus along with the crowd;

“We are all the non-believers/We are just losers and leavers
We are the lovers and breeders/We are all the non-believers
Don’t ever lose hope/Don’t ever worry
Don’t ever lose hope/It’s our love story
We are all the non-believers/We are just losers and leavers
We are the lovers and breeders/We are all the non-believers”

As the song ends with a crash of the drums, the next song quickly begins with the hugely recognisable guitar introduction and fast-paced drumming by Nathan Mullen, Amy throws herself around the stage with massive energy levels almost as if she’s lost herself in the moment, she runs across to the front of the stage and jumps up onto an amplifier again and waves her arms back and forth as she begins singing the famous opening lines to what has always been seen as the bands biggest hit;

“She wears her hair down low/She walks the streets once more
She writes up little fairytales in her head/It’s so tragic because they always end up dead
She’s got sweet little fantasies of running away with me/She’s got sweet little fantasies of coming away with me
They said her face, could launch a thousand ships/They guys were desperate to kiss her red lips
Instead she walks the streets at night, looking for tips/Show some skin once more and we’ll call it quits”

As Amy jumps up and down and runs around the stage with boundless energy, you can’t help wonder how someone so small can provide so much power and effort, the time frame of the red-haired front woman even in comparison to her band mates looks so small, not to mention in comparison with the size of the stage that they’re performing on, but it’s not something that is even a slight issue with the way that she uses the stage and throws herself around so comfortably and then as the thunderous drum beats signal the chorus, Amy jumps in the air and drops to the floor and she screams, “England” before singing;

“It’s all just a game they play/They’ll play it until your old and grey
They’ll mess with your head tonight/They’ll scream louder, “Hold on tight!”
I’ve got sweet little fantasies/Running away with me
Those sweet little fantasies/Are coming away with me
But tonight, your all alone/Your castle has turned into a home
There’s cracks in the fabrics and tears in their beers/You think you’d have learnt this time, that girl ain’t worth a dime

And with that, Amy stands to her feet as the band finishes the instrumentation to the song and they gather together at the center of the stage, they raise their hands in the air to the crowd and take a couple of moments to take in the magnitude of what they’ve just experience, They all bow once more and continue to stand together with a look of amazement and relief on their faces as the crowd beckon out the name “Riot! Riot! Riot!” and their joy and enthusiasm is evidently clear, there’s also a tinge of emotion on their faces but the lasting impression on the audience or anybody who questions them as just a teenage rock band will have surely changed after this performance, they aren’t just a teenage rock band anymore, their ages shouldn’t come into your thoughts anymore and despite Amy not turning 19 years old for another month it’s clear that they’ve proven that they’re more than just a group of teenage misfits and losers but instead they’re already a rock band that could become one of the greats, that’s in their own hands and as of right now they’ve already proven to be the most influential band of their generation.

In the midst of the awards being doled out to all corners of the music industry, seventeen awards in total. California is humid this evening and ‘The Kodak Theater’ is buzzing with the typical enthusiasm that you’d expect from awards night, especially for this the most acclaimed awards show in the music industry. Almost anybody who’s anybody is in attendance tonight and so the pressure to perform to your very best is always quite high. Luckily those that step forward onto that stage to perform at these events are generally experienced enough to handle the pressure that may arrive in the final moments before heading onstage.

Amy: “Hey, Justin! You remember we’re doing Trading Love and Faith first, right?”

Justin: “We are?”

Amy: “Yeah and the new one and ‘A Moment, An Hour, A Lifetime’”

Justin: “I don’t see that as a promising endeavour”

Amy: “It sets it up perfectly, slow and emotive is what I want and with you and Adam on acoustic, it’s gonna be the perfect way to accentuate the lyrics.”

Justin: “What? We’re doing it acoustic now?”

Amy: “Yeah … stop worrying. It’ll be fine, you easily know every chord change in the song”

Justin: “Good god!”

Amy: “Very good god!”

Prior to the band going onstage, they’re all stood together in the wings awaiting their call to make their way onto the platform which will see them perform to practically every country in the world. Their arms are wrapped around each other as they huddle together in the final moments before being given their signal to head onstage. Amy mutters a few assertive words to make sure that her band mates are feeling up for the performance, the fact that they’re currently at the early stages of a world tour will mean that they’re in the perfect shape for the performance tonight and not at all rusty. Although this will mark a rare awards show performance for the band who performed at the 21st IMA’s prior to their big breakthrough and have since avoided performing at these sorts of events.
Despite that fact, the band have picked up a total of five awards, four of which taking the ‘Best Band’ category and the other for the ‘Best Live Artist’ at previous ‘Chaos Awards’ and ‘The Fans Choice Awards’ and they’re up for another five awards tonight.
And as the stage manager gives them the thumbs up to make their way towards the stage, the announcement for their performance comes bellowing out of the speakers surrounded by a rapturous round of applause and cheers from the audience, mostly made up of fellow industry colleagues.

The band quickly make their way onto the stage and assemble themselves in their individual positions as the chorus of cheers run throughout the large ballroom, all with the exception of Amy. Nathan positions himself behind his drum kit and begins to play a very soft beat on the large instrument as Justin and Adam begin plucking the strings of their acoustic guitars and are backed by the steady and always solid bass line provided by Jason. As the slowly and melancholic sounds of the bands instrumentation plays, Amy slowly walks across the stage which gets the biggest cheer since their arrival onstage. Her red-hair perfectly shining and matching her pinkish-red lips, also wearing a very understated short black dress, she smiles with a childlike enthusiasm and grasps the microphone with her right hand and grasps the microphones stand with her left hand. The stage lighting is very minimal with the band deciding to use candles to add an atmospheric touch to preceding’s.
As the soft and gentle acoustics continue to play, they move from just filler into a familiar chord progression with slight changes to add to the difference between acoustic and electric driven music and Amy takes a deep breath and softly sings the opening to an album track that has recently become a fan-favourite;

“Echo, echo can you still hear my voice
It may have faded a little over time but it’s still within me
While I may have lost the things I once had
The fire in my stomach has never burned more deeply
And since you went away and left me alone
Well, to cut a long story short
I’ve spent these past few years in the shadows
Burying myself away until the perfect opportunity has arisen

Well I guess it’s time for my revenge

I’ll check myself in the mirror
To make sure my hair falls perfectly into place
I’ll wear those clothes that you used to love
I’ll stare at you with a smile on my face
And I’ll bite my bottom lip because I know you can’t resist it

And as the song continues to move forward, the chord progression changes slightly with Adam and Justin now very dominant in preceding’s, using their abilities to change up the pace of the song in perfect timing with both Nathan and Jason who both combine perfectly to keep things in check with absolute ease which makes you wonder how this group of nineteen year olds (certainly until the end of this month at least) can be so perfectly tuned to their craft at such an early age, it appears that there is not any whiff of panic within the musicians and that professionalism runs through the entire band, starting from Nathan at the back of the stage and then through Jason and Justin and finally to Adam and Amy and it comes together in one fell swoop as Amy now raises her voice, keeping it melodically beautiful but now with a power and assertive ness as she belts out the chorus in typical fashion;

“I’m trading love and faith in the aftermath of heartbreak
This defeated heart is destined to be all alone
The girl that once needed to be protected and loved
Well, she doesn’t need that anymore
So I’m trading love and faith in the aftermath of heartbreak
Those things I’m learning to live without

See, I don’t need your arms wrapped around me
I don’t need your heart beating with mine
I don’t need you to hold me close on those cold winter nights
I don’t need any of that this time
I’m learning something that’s completely new
Apparently it’s a thing called loneliness
But everything you’ve heard about that is untrue”

The music continues to play through the final verses of the track in a similar vein and as the song ends the acoustic guitars continue but this time with a different chord pattern which indicates to the crowd that the band are moving into the next song, that indication is made clearer in more emphatic turns as Amy bellows out, “WRITTEN IN THE STARS.” and Justin takes a few brief moments of attention as the solitary spotlight hits him as he plays an acoustic riff, intricately plucking the strings of the acoustic guitar to create a moment of instrumental process and duly taking his opportunity to shine.
That of course changes as the spotlight then directs to Amy at the center of the stage, again her hands are grasped to the microphone and she’s swaying from side to side in an enthusiastic manner. As the music plays from behind her, she tilts the microphone towards her mouth and begins singing;

“I don’t know where we’re going, this is all brand new to me
I’ve heard people talk of love before, it’s not something I could ever see
I don’t know the direction, to lead you to my heart
I’ve never been one for perfection
And I ain’t gonna start

I’ve been independent
For as long as I can remember
I’m without a flame, I’m just a burning ember
I’ve kept my cards close to my chest
Taken care of myself and left all of the rest
Because I know that I’ll be safe and sound

It’s stuck like a memory that I just can’t let go
Just like a familiar face of someone that I used to know

The band continue to back the flame-haired singer with that same professionalism throughout and Amy gives a deep stare out towards the crowd and smiles slightly before closing her eyes for the briefest of moments. When she opens them again, she holds the microphone stand a little tighter, lifting it from the ground in the process and slowly moves a little closer towards the edge of the stage, she holds the microphone stand in the air for a couple of seconds before placing it back onto the ground, tilting it towards her mouth as she begins singing once more;

“Now I’m neurotic, vulnerable and scared
With all kinds of thoughts running through my head
But it’s all worth it when you hold me tight
Because I’m finally in love and I’m willing to brave the fight
I know we’ll make it and we’ll be alright
At the end of the day
When all is said and done
I’m truly yours
It looks like you’ve won

It’s written in the stars
It’s blazed across the sky

As the song comes to an end, the music stops completely dead and the audience go silent as Amy remains stood center stage and takes a few moments of silence to build anticipation. It’s widely expected that the band will then roar into action but they don’t, just remaining silent. And Amy holds tightly to the microphone and begins singing acapella into the raised microphone;

“I’m playing this game called love and it’s messing with my heart
I’ll fight my instincts, fight my feelings, but I’m just falling apart
I’ll close my eyes and let my mind run free
Holding you is where I long to be
And I’m trying to keep calm and fight what I feel
But a space in my heart is harder to heal

So I’ll try to move on and pretend that everything’s fine
But I know what I feel and I want you to be mine
So just tell me what you’re feeling
Is it the same
If I get hurt
You’re not to blame”

And as she arrives to the chorus, the band then finally return to their duties, Nathan hitting the drums with more force while the bass from Jason becomes more prominent with a riff that dominates over the acoustic guitars in this particular song. The acoustic guitar playing is still there of course and remains noticeable but it’s the combination of drums, bass and Amy’s vocals which see the song through to it’s anthemic and heart-breaking ending as Amy repeats the song’s main chorus through and through;

“People say it’s better to have love than lost
But if this is the pain I feel then I’m willing to pay the cost
Because living without you is a pain I can barely take
And although I’ll live on
My heart will still ache!

So if it takes a moment to like and an hour to love
