Biography

In the 2000s, when he wasn't shagging Hollywood starlets or performing stand-up comedy, Ryan Ross Hernandez was showing-off his two distinct gifts: His virtuosic guitar skills and his aptitude to create classy songs that went across a wide-range of genres including blues, rock, pop, and soul. Putting those abilities to use both on his solo albums and with the pop-punk band PANIC!, Hernandez earned big chart success, becoming the singer-songwriter of choice for millions around the world.

The musician grew up in Miami, Florida, Hernandez picked up the guitar at age 16 and was soon playing local blues clubs and bars. After he suffered from anxiety when he was 17, it was then that his songwriting career began in earnest. He use to write songs about his life and experiences to calm himself. After finishing high school, Hernandez enrolled at Florida State University on a partial scholarship. He dropped out right before his Sophomore year began to move to New York City, where he could begin an actual career as a musician. Hernandez recorded a batch of demos in 2000/1 which he distributed himself while playing gigs across the Northeast.

Hernandez's big break came after he appeared at 2003's South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas, when he was scouted and signed to a label. He was set to begin recording his debut solo album, when in 2004, while just beginning production on his solo album, joined the pop-punk band PANIC!, as a vocalist and lead guitarist. With Hernandez's support, the band was signed to a major label and released their critically acclaimed debut album We Are the Directors of This Dramatic Love Story, in 2005. During his time with PANIC!, the band earned four International Music Awards including Best New Artist, Best Single, and Best Band twice in a row, and sold over eleven million records. Ryan Ross Hernandez was a member of the band until 2007, when he decided to focus full-time on his solo career.

His first full-length album as a soloist, Matters of the Heart, was picked up and released worldwide on September 13, 2005. Matters of the Heart went 4xmulti-platinum on the back of number-one singles "Your Arms Feel Like Home" and "Driving Away From My Hometown".

Hernandez's studio follow-up, 2008's Dark Secret Love, debuted at number one on the charts and yielded another two number one singles "All You Need Is Love Is a Lie" and "Don't Know Why", in addition to winning Best Single at the IMAs for the number-one AC hit "A Never-Ending Trip to Heartbreak". That year, Hernandez began to abandon his sensitive balladeer image in favor of a smart-ass Renaissance man persona, complete with sardonic blog posts, becoming a columnist for Playboy magazine, a one-off acting debut in his very own written screenplay Something's Missing, and a memorable guest role on the hit comedy sitcom, 30 Rock.

Around the same time, Hernandez began to branch our musically as well. He appeared on Stephanie Fierce's "I Love the Way You Loath Me", which they co-wrote and shared vocal duties. In his own music, Hernandez began to focus on meatier stuff, particularly the blues. He quickly earned praise from all ends of the music spectrum. By then he already had two Best Solo Artist awards under his belt, and countless nominations for other awards. In 2009, Time magazine featured Ryan Ross Hernandez as part of its Time 100 series, lauding his "emphatic voice and emotional fearlessness."

Hernandez is also becoming a household name as a producer. He has produced for such acts as Infinite, Alica Lena, Reckoner, PANIC!, Ellie-Grace Summers, Michelle Greene, and Riot! in the Boulevard.

Over the years Hernandez has been the subject of much tabloid fodder, having been linked to an ocean of A-list starlets, ranging from actresses, singers, and models. His tumultuous relationships with fellow celebrities has made Hernandez a media staple in tabloids. He has also dabbled in stand-up comedy, and it's been long rumored that he is developing a variety show pilot starring himself.

In 2010, Hernandez released his third studio album, Let a Man Be Lost, which debuted at number one and has so far swapped four top 15 singles, including number-one single "The Halfhearted Lover". The album has been universally acclaimed by both fans and critics. He explored lyrical territory previously untouched, and created an album that ranges over at least half-dozen genres. The album has been his second album as a solo artist to sell over four million records in the US. It also became his first album to reach number one in the UK. During the album's cycle, he also banked Best Solo Artist at the IMAs for the third time, and Best Male Artist at the Chaos Awards for a second time. As of June 2011, he has sold over 10 million albums in the U.S. and 20 million albums worldwide.

The thirty four year old musician, released his forth studio album titled, Running Changes, in November 2011.

BLOG #001: A Message from the Studio - Back to Work

Hi everyone,

Ryan here. I am writing this during my lunch break from recording in the studio. As you can see the site has been renamed to runningchanges.com to mark the official start of that era. The Running Changes era. It also means that I will be blogging more often. I know it probably sounds old school since most people are vlogging these days. Whatever the fuck that means. But I prefer the written word.

So... Let's see what things are on my mind today. I wanted to first thank everyone who has listened to Let a Man Be Lost. Be it if you bought it, downloaded it, burnt it. Thank you for giving it a shot, whether you liked it or not. I know many are thinking why end that album cycle so soon. Well, truth be told, that chapter of my life is done. Don't get me wrong I still love Let a Man Be Lost. It's the best album I've ever made and it may very well go down as being my best one. As a singer-songwriter, as a good singer-songwriter, you have to play songs up until the point when you can't connect with them anymore. Up until the point you feel as though you are being forced to sing it. I am not in the business to please everyone.

The minute you try to please everybody, you end up pleasing nobody.

I learned that lesson a long time ago. These days, I don't make music to please critics or fans. As narcissistic as that sounds, I don't write a single song thinking that it will be a number-one hit, or it will be raved by critics, or a fan favorite. All the songs I pin down are songs that first and foremost please me. Songs that I have a strong connection to. If any of the three things I said before do occur, that's fine. You won't ever hear me complain about being successful.

Secondly, as I am in the studio recording and writing new songs, I can't help but think of anthems. Not national anthems, although happy late fourth of July. I am thinking about songs that became political anthems. Protest songs. Whatever you'll call them. "Blowin' in the Wind", "The Times They Are a-Changin'", "You Haven't Done Nothin'", "A Change Is Gonna Come". Even entire albums have been unified into that one topic, the most popular example being "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye. All those are great songs. I don't write political protest songs. The closest song being "What We're Fighting For", off of Let a Man Be Lost. That song dealt into the beliefs of humans, but not targeting or blaming anyone for anything.

Music can't change the world. A million protest songs in response to military aggression can be written, have probably been written. They won't change anything when their governments simply ignore them. I believe celebrities should not get involved in politics. I believe politicians shouldn't be celebrities. Our command in chief of the United States is a celebrity. I won't say anything more since I don't want to start any online bullshit.

Back to my point. Music can't change the world. I love music. There is nothing else in the wrong that compares to it in terms of connection and feel, yet music can't change the world. Music will never change the world. As much as artist try for that to happen, it never will. I have this belief that everyone in my generation will die and things will still be exactly the same. Because nothing can change the course of the world. Not musicians, not celebrities, not politicians.

That's enough ranting for now. Most of you just want to hear me talking about what I am, a musician. Not a politician, not a world leader, not someone who can or will change the world.

I've been busy in the studio, both with my own music and working with Riot! in the Boulevard. What I like about producing for a band is that I can split everything up and everyone apart. I an have unorthodox way of producing especially when I am producing for a band. At the first recording, I just let them hear a rough demo of a whole song. Then each one of them only hears their parts from thereon until the entire song is mixed together. In my opinion it doesn't detract them from trying to get it to sound even better. When you a full song with all the layers, nine time out of ten your ear will tell you that's the best. And I do not allow that to happen when I am working with someone else. Even if that first rough draft is the best, I want to have a hundred different versions first. It really is frustrating to have me as a producer.

Working with Riot! has been one of the best creative experiences I've ever had. It'll blow you away when you hear their debut record. I promised myself not to slobber over Amy Meyer too much, but she is the best female vocalist to come out in recent memory. The last time I've heard a voice that amazing up close was with Ashley Perry. Amy deserves all the credit she gets. She really is that good tho-OKAY. (She's also fuckin' gorgeous.)

In addition, I also recently produced Michelle Green's lead-off single "You Just Lost Your Lover" from her upcoming sophomore album. I usually don't like people who get into this business too early because it gives them no time to develop. Michelle Green is an exception though. She has more talent than some people twice her age. She's an absolute delight to be around and I think she's gonna be around for a while.

I believe that's all the work I've done with others in recent memory. I will be working with Katie Coyle soon. She's the newcomer who I've praised the most because she's just that damn good. Her debut album is the album of the year in my opinion. Of course, until my album comes out.

Now to my own work. Running Changes, the title of my forth studio album. Running Changes is about 71% complete. A lot of people don't know that almost instantly following the release of Let a Man Be Lost, I started writing its follow-up. That's one of the main reasons why I decided not to tour. I feel that a lot of people after making their best album, take a long time creating the follow-up to it because they don't know how to follow it. Well I'm not trying to follow Let a Man Be Lost, I'm trying to create a record that is as different as I am a person from the last one. I spent a good two or three months recording in New York City, and now I am hoping to finish it in Los Angeles. My hopeful thinking is that the album will be done by the end of this month, but that might just be a wish. Be it whenever it's done, it will not be released until the time when it starts snowing in New York City. I'd like to have it released around October or November of this year. This album isn't a Summer record. This album is for those beautiful autumn months, and gloomy winter days. With this blog, I do hope to give you all little samplers of what to expect from the album. Not too much though. If you want to hear what I'm listening to for inspiration while recording Running Changes, go out and pick yourself up the following albums: Joni Mitchell's Blue, Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks, Neil Young's After the Gold Rush. Most of my current listening experiences have been these great, classic singer-songwriter albums.

I guess that's all I have to say.

Thanks for giving me what I have. It's time to go back to wondering how I don't let you down still... Something will come to mind, I'm sure.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

From LA.

BLOG #002: A Message from the Heart

I need to write this.

I'm fully aware that when I sing, say or write anything, fifty percent of the public response will be in support of it and the other 50 will want to discount it. This blog, though, is directed to 100 percent of people reading it. If a blog has any cultural effect, then it should be used for more than just celebrity gossip, pictures of sneakers, or funny youtube videos. (If you don't think my blog has any effect, than you can't by definition be reading this right now and therefore don't have to respond to it in any way. Isn't that neat how the brain works?)

I'm not writing about fame or success or celebrity or the media. That's my business.

This is about everyone.

This is about a level of self consciousness so high in my generation, that it's actually toxic.

There is a young teenage girl who is in her bedroom, posing in front of the camera she's awkwardly holding in her outstretched hand. She'll take a at least 123 photos until coming up with one she thinks she looks best in, which looks nothing like her, and after she's done poring over images of herself, will post one on her facebook profile and then write something like " I don't give a fuck what you think about me," as a caption.

It is about the person trying out for American Idol or X-Factor, who while going off about how confident they are that they were born ready to sing in front of the world, are trembling so badly they can hardly breathe and forget the words to every lyric of every song they thought they knew.

About someone who maintains a celebrity blog that subsists on tearing other people down but who has wrestled with a lifelong battle of acceptance with themselves.

It is about me, the guy who walks through a sea of photographers into a restaurant like he's Paul Newman, but who leaves a "reject" pile of clothes in his closet so high that his cleaning lady can't figure out how one man can step into so many pairs of pants in a week.

We all seem to know deep down that it's incredibly hard to be alive and interact with the world around us but will try and cover it up as best we can. For as badass and unaffected as we try to come off, we're all just one sentence away from being brought to the edge of tears, if only it was worded right. And I don't want to act immune to that anymore. I took the biggest detour from myself over the past year, since I decided that I wasn't going to care about what people thought about me. I got to the point where I had so much padding on that, sure, I couldn't feel the negativity, but that's because I couldn't feel much of anything. And I think I'm done with that.

I'm not the first person to admit we're all self conscious, But what I want to is to shed a light on why we're all in the same boat, no matter the shape of the life we lead: because every one of us were told since birth that we were special. We were spoken to by name through a television. We were promised we could be anything that we wanted to be, if only we believed it and then, faster than we saw coming, we were set loose into the world to shake hands with the millions of other people who were told the exact same thing.

Really? We're all just beautifully unspectacular, not special. And that truth is going to catch up with us whether we want to run from it or not. Paparazzi's follow me, but they don't know I'm listening to Bob Dylan when they're asking me questions. It's just a matter of how old you are once you embrace that fact. And for me, 31 sounds about right.

What now? I can only speak for myself: Enjoy who I am, the talents and the liabilities. Stop acting careless. In fact, care more. Be vulnerable but stay away from where it hurts. Read. See more shows. Of any kind. Rock shows, art shows, boat shows. Create more art. Wear more plaids and let my hair grow long. Only do things that I enjoy.

Act nervous when I'm nervous, puzzled when I don't know what the hell to do, and smile when it all goes my way. And never in any other order than that.

Give more and expect the same in return, but over time.

And when it's all over, whether at the end of this fabulous career or of this life, which I hope takes place at the same time, I should look back and say that I had it good and I made the most of it while I was able. And so should you.

I'm going back to work now.

Katie: sorry Chantal but I'm not ever going to judge anyone on what I read about them in the media, not after what I went through. Plus, Ryan is one person who was always standing up for me and looking out for me. Even if he has done wrong, doesn't he deserve a chance? He's clearly sorry.
I'm not saying anything against you girls or Nadia, I'm not taking sides, really. Just offering support.

Chantal: It's so obvious, are you blind or just thick? Maybe both? Just because he stood up for you doesn't make what he did right, the word SORRY means nothing at this point, it's a bit late now, isn't it? Take your support and offer it somewhere else, maybe to the girl who was CHEATED ON?? I can't...

Kimberly: AMEN! No one messes with our GirlSpice girls, grrr... don't you think locking Nadia up was a bit drastic though? AT LEAST GIVE HER SOME BOOZE IN THERE!

Chantal: No, she'll thank me later.

Sophia: Everyone calm down babes! Hehe! Hi Katie! Hi everyone! Awwwwwwww! I'm scared!

Katie: Hi Sophia :)
Chantal, please just hear me out. I feel sorry for Nadia...really I do, IF this happened. But, like I said, I won't judge anyone on what I've read on the Internet.
I never said what he did was right Chantal. I just think that Ryan deserves someone to be offering support. And because he did it for me, I'm willing to offer him my ear to listen and help.
Sorry always means something by the way. If it's sincere.

Chantal: Of course I'm going to support my band mates, and don't even start with calling me narrow-minded, I'm trying to WAKE YOU UP! At least I support the victim in all of this and not the person who can't seem to think without his penis for a second of the day.

Kimberly: FORGET THIS DRAMA! Wanna go clubbing?

Chantal: Not the time, really, not the time...

Katie: you're missing the point here. I say yes, you should stand up for your band mate, and yes I feel sorry for her, but I am standing by my friend and trying to help him through what is a difficult time for him as well. Who knows, maybe if he sees he's done wrong, and relaxes at my ranch for a while, then he'll feel better, and maybe regret what he did. All I know is that I will stand by someone who helped me, and someone I count as a friend. You will not stop me doing that.
I hope Nadia feels better soon.

BLOG #004: Monday Morning Gloominess

The following lyrics may or may not be from the first single off of Running Changes. I don't have a name for it yet, but the song absolutely broke my heart. I remember the night I wrote it in New York City, and honest to god, I got teary-eyed. Every songwriter in the world knows that when you feel that passionate or emotional about a song, it's a great fucking song. I just want to stress the fact that this is not a love song. Look closely at the lyrics and you'll figure out that it's far from it actually.

I am an author
Of days I imagine inside my head
Can you really believe a month is all it's been
You see this paper heart
The one I build with crayons and stones
I think I might have gone and inked you in

Day by day
Step by step
Let's build a yard together with a garden in the middle of it
Granted, it's not much
At least it's a start
Let's get the neighbors swaying
To the song in our hearts
And the shape of calling home
With a face to call home
I got your silhouette to call home

It's great you'll never see
The wreck of a man I use to be
It's difficult to believe a man can feel so small
You'll never look deep into my eyes
And make me feel like I'm a liability
I bet all the women think I've never been at all

Day by day
Step by step
Let's build a yard together with a garden in the middle of it
Granted, it's not much
At least it's a start
Let's get the neighbors swaying
To the song in our hearts
And the shape of calling home
With a face to call home
I got your silhouette to call home

One day I'll learn the shape of calling home
When I have your face to call home
Let's build a heart to call home

I think I wanna stay awhile
I think I wanna stay awhile
I think I might stay awhile
And I'm thinking about all of the time

Maybe baby, I can stay sometime
Maybe baby, I can spend the night
Maybe baby, I can sing you to sleep
And what I'm talking about is all of the time

And day by day
Step by step
We'll fix the cracks in the pavement someday, baby
And our garden in the yard will be a place to call home
'Cause we'll build it together with our respective hearts
And I know it ain't much
But a start is a start
To get you swaying to the song in my heart
With a face to call home

And I learned the shape of calling home
Now you got my face to call home
And I'm coming home
And I'm coming coming home
Home, home
Home, home
To the face I call my own

BLOG #005: Running Changes / LP #5

Running Changes is now a single disc album. Pretty much since after the release of Let a Man be Lost last November, anyone who has followed me since then, know that I've mentioned many times that Running Changes was set to be a double album. That is no more. The key to a double album is having two sides that are different yet connect in someway. That was not occurring with this album. There was no halfway point with either side. The more music I was recording, the more song selections I was making, the more songs I was mixing, it came to a point where I released that the initial big idea I had to release a "career-defining" double album, was not possible anymore. So instead or releasing to you all an album that really doesn't sound like an album but rather just a compilation of songs, I rather release to the public two great albums in the span of six to eight months. The album that will be released this November will be called Running Changes, and serve as my forth studio album. While the album following it will be released within the first six months of 2012 and be my yet-to-be-titled fifth studio album. Then support the release of both albums with a world tour.

At the moment, I have exactly two weeks before the tour with PANIC! begins, and hopefully by next week I will be turning in the mastered copy of Running Changes to Studio60 Records. Currently I am making the final song selection which is providing to be more difficult than one would expect. My sound engineer, Chad, and I are currently putting the songs into three different piles. The RC (Running Changes) pile which means that those songs will more than likely make the cut for the track listing. The 5th Studio Album pile which is made up of mostly demos or half-baked songs that were never finished and could see their home on the next album, this also includes pieces of torn-out notebook paper of songs that were written but never actually got a note down. And finally the Shit pile, the songs that were just shit and/or recorded while I was intoxicated. Trust me, you don't want to hear me play music when I'm drunk. My vocals are slurred, I try to create new guitar chords, it's terrible really. Douchebag times a hundred thousand.

I'm still unsure as to how many songs Running Changes will feature now that it will all be on one disc. I want to predict somewhere between the range of 13 to 16 songs. The track listing should be released soon after the mastered copy is turned in. A lot of exciting things coming in the next weeks, months, year. It's gonna be a thrilling ride filled with a lot of new music and touring, and hopefully less about my stupid mouth.

Nadia: Knowing vaguely how long you've worked on this album, I can imagine how hard it'll be to make up the final track listing. I'm so looking forward to everything coming up, including this fourth album, the fifth, and everything else. I may come to every date of your world tour if it doesn't conflict with GirlSpice's and act like some psycho fan. Supportive girlfriend. ;)
