CULTURE UNCUT - QUICKFIRE INTERVIEWBoth halves of BoL or now known by their better new nickname 'Books' hope to take indie rock to new levels by introducing lesser known genres into their new releases.Me = Verne Howitzer(VH), interviewer/intern for Culture Uncut.
Interviewees = 'Books' members Laura Paige(Keyboards/Vocals/Drums) and Peter Hampshire(Lead Guitarist/Bassist/Vocals)
VH: OK, screw the hellos. I'm getting right down to business.
Laura Paige: (slight chuckle) OK, no problem.
Peter Hampshire: Fire away.
VH: So, before this interview, you dropped a few hints saying that your new releases would incorporate a few of the lesser-known genres.
PH: Oh for sure. Most of the mainstream bands we see and even the indie-ish ones seem to fully ignore genres like 'Shoegaze' and even more experimental things like 'Garage Rock'. The biggest thing we hope to introduce is an even more prominent 'Noise' element. Our distortion pedal is aching for use.
LP: Ever since we began our hiatus, we each parted ways and began listening to our own bands. Bands we wanted to emulate. There's this chick from New England, Merril Garbus who plays under the moniker tUnE-yArDs. I want to have her type of sound more than anything.
PH: I've been listening to a few new bands too. Whirl, a shoegaze outfit from Seattle I think, and then you've got No Age. Really great bands. We've also been listening to more popular artists. I don't quite agree with what he says outside of music but I want to be known as the 'Noise RRH'.
LP: I'd like to be a bit more like Michelle Green, she's an awesome singer. I guess our new songs are going to be a weird event. People should like them.
VH: OK, next up is your Festival de Musica performance which had less songs than most other bands even though you had such a large performing window, why was that?
LP: We had a few more songs we wanted to perform, but we also wanted to make this more than a performance. We wanted the fans to be involved, you won't see it on the Youtube video but we did a few freeform improv songs that were based off of what the people attending were saying. It was fun.
VH: Final question, Big Brother, Peter's going on that in a few and I want to know what your stance is on that.
PH: I've got a statement I'm releasing later on.
LP: Well, Sara Daniels conflicted with us earlier this year but I'm sure that's water under the bridge. Alex P. is a pretty frightening guy and I'm sure everyone else won't be much of a bother...besides maybe hmm...I don't know who I want to say. It'll be interesting.
VH: Thanks for your time.
