A General Overview
by Peter Hampshire
(Found in a notepad/word doc if you purchased the EP digitally, inside the booklet of the physical release)
---

Home is a weird place to be when you're there. At least it was for me. I loved my family deeply but it didn't stop me from running as quick as I could from the place once my scholarship to Ithaca U arrived. That's when I first realized, home is the place where you are. Home moves when you do and it left me with a strange feeling, like all that stuff people once told me about home being this awesome place were all lies.

"Lets never meet again." Were the last words Laura Paige told me towards the end of March, she was completely serious and I was too. We were sick of each other and each of us were looking for a way out of the band. We disbanded and our contract with Shooting Star Records dissolved. It took two months for me to break down and call Laura and we agreed to meet up at my new workplace McDonalds so we could talk about leaving off on a sour note.

One thing turned into another and before you knew it, we said we were getting back together for a new album, even if it was just for our fans that we felt we let down. Before that though, we wanted to make sure we were back on even footing. We played a few dive bars to get back into shape and we talked more, to get more chemistry and in the end we're stronger for it.

So, then comes the conversation we had last month about why we really broke up. We didn't hate each other, we just pretended we did. Laura said something that made a lot of sense and I think it'll be good for everyone who listens to this to hear it:

"Maybe it's because we were scared about not being Home for all that time. I mean, we're on the road 24/7 recording, playing live shows and doing interviews. Maybe we need to slow down and think because if we don't...the past is gonna repeat itself."

I took those words to heart and I came up with a realization. It's not Home that we want to go to, it's the feeling we get. Seeing the people we love, things we know and things we are accustomed to. We try to make new memories to take the places of the old ones but sometimes...you've gotta just fall back into old habits.

I guess that's what this album is, us falling back into what we wanted to be a year ago. Us after we finished AATW, ambitious and ready for action. I hope everyone loves the new E.P. and I hope it gets good reviews but if you don't, thanks for listening anyhow. Just try to remember the things you love while you're listening, it might help a bit.

i.) Rain On [2:58]

Genre:
Noise-Rock, Indie-Rock

Overview:

This song is an intro we made for the new album to help get our groove back, it’s really noisy. Then we started writing down the lyrics, which are all about the feeling of being on tour and why we did our whole hiatus thing. It was weird asking each other how we felt before the hiatus. We each agreed that we were missing our hometown and that’s what the song is about, missing Ithaca and everyone from there.

Another theme prominent in the song is the fact that we both sorta hated each other during the hiatus. Most of the questions were what we were thinking about each other during that period and I think this works better than any interview on the subject could. I hope everyone likes it, it’s a pretty solid song and I’d like to call it Noise-Rock hybrid because it brings it a few other genres as well, I can’t say that I see it doing well on the sales charts though.

Sound:

Peter utilizes quick strums and his distortion pedal at the beginning of the song to give it a lo-fi feel before Laura enters with her smashing drums. At this point (twenty seconds into the song) Peter’s strumming speeds up but still becomes heavier. The lo-fi effect really shows in the fact that the lyrics and vocals to the song can’t really be heard over the sound. Peter’s quick strums make them sound as if they were static. The singing is in fact a mixture of Laura and Peter with Laura’s voice being the most easily heard.

At the chorus, the song’s drumming slows down and Peter’s strums, still loud and feedback heavy leave the chorus to be completely heard. It’s all slow and concentrated to let the song’s main chorus be heard in its entirety.

Lyrics:

Gone for a while now, never going back to that place again
Tomorrow will be a different day, broken promises will give way
When I look to your eyes, I see our past forays
So give way to our new life, break on past those old sins
We’re gonna have new ones for our new lives
We’re gonna find new inspiration, a renewed drive

[Chorus:]

It has been a while now, since you’ve been gone
I’ve had no other options, but to rain on
It has been a while now, since you’ve been gone
I’ve had no other options, but to rain on
Rain on
Rain on
On
On

[Chorus End]

I can hardly remember the Ithaca skyline, no more no less
I can hardly hear you, all I have is the memories from last December
This shirt, these flashbacks, hang with me with every fiber
Look at yourself now, who are you trying to impress
Can you notice me anymore, from that high horse?
Can’t you hear me anymore, listen to my tone of remorse

[Chorus:]

It has been a while now, since you’ve been gone
I’ve had no other options, but to rain on
It has been a while now, since you’ve been gone
I’ve had no other options, but to rain on
Rain on
Rain on
On
On

[Chorus End]

These dreams come again, I think back to those good times
I see you in the back of the cafe, holding on to old moments
I’m no better, standing here holding on to old remnants
Can you still see those moments, where we were at our prime
Can you still hear those songs
The ones that threatened to right our wrongs

[Chorus]

It has been a while now, since you’ve been gone
I’ve had no other options, but to rain on
It has been a while now, since you’ve been gone
I’ve had no other options, but to rain on
Rain on
Rain on
On
On

[Chorus/Song End]

ii.) Bagniokeeper [1:28]

Genre:
Shoegaze

Overview:

We, were born lucky in a way. Book of Love, I mean since we joined AATW a year or so after we became serious. Right from our inception we were kinda getting excited about joining a label and we finally did through the Comp. Now that we’re back, we’ve had a much harder time getting a label, people see us as ‘That band that won AATW’. From the point that we won the event, I was hoping that moment would never come but it has. Sara Daniels, a great artist in her own right, seeked to use the AATW moniker and run rampant with it but it’s not Book of Love.

Here we were, right in the middle of getting back together. It wasn’t easy, we spent around two months getting back into the groove of things and not only that we were having monetary troubles. We didn’t want to exactly cop out and make a quick album, so we just practiced and got everything right. Thankfully, Studio 60 picked us up recently and we’re back in the big leagues so to speak, but back then this song was written with that in mind.

Bagniokeeper: Brothel Owner.

Sound:

The production of this song embraces Shoe-Gaze fully, which leads to the Wall of Sound effects. It begins with the distortion effects on Pete’s guitar slowly building up. Pete’s strumming is slower and more in-tune with the curious feeling of the song, Laura’s drumming is in exchange as slow as Pete’s guitar and follows his lead.

The vocals are, like ‘Rain On’ hidden under the Wall of Sound. The melody of Laura’s voice can be heard quite well but the actual words are hard to make out since they are hidden under the distortion of his guitar.

Another interesting thing about the lyrics themselves is that they follow no real structure, instead telling the tale of the story until the chorus.

Lyrics:

You and me were always forward thinkers
This is a new experience, for you and I
Once we make it big though, they’ll thank us
With any luck, we’ll find our way back into the public eye
For now though, we should just keep it steady
They’ll all find us when we’re ready
Think back to those days, when we were on top
I tried my hardest but those memories never stop

[Chorus:]

I’m not ready for the future
I’m not ready for the future
Because the past keeps catching up with me
I’ve got no leeway, nothing left for me to see
The past keeps catching up with me
The past keeps catching up with me
I’m not ready
I’m not ready yet

[Chorus End]

Here we are again, our name on a bill
We better promise, our crowd to stay general
I can’t believe you’re here, waiting beside me
I can’t see past today, today, today
Just know, that my opinion won’t stray
It isn’t hard to see
Past the moonlit dates
So make me believe, in your fragile future

[Chorus:]

I’m not ready for the future
I’m not ready for the future
Because the past keeps catching up with me
I’ve got no leeway, nothing left for me to see
The past keeps catching up with me
The past keeps catching up with me
I’m not ready
I’m not ready yet

iii.) Tiny Outlet Shops [5:47]

(feat. Amber Lowell of Arcades)

Genre:

Chillwave, Indie-Rock

Overview:

Well, we were touring back before the hiatus and it was a really awkward experience because we were leaving out of hotels and everything we bought was from these Outlet Malls. That was hard for a couple of kids outta college. We were looking for a home on the road and we kinda found it, in those Outlet Malls. The stores had people that were nice because they wanted to be. It was great seeing them and we started to look forward to the break in-between shows more than anything else, it’s funny in a way.

Along the road, we met a few nice bands. These bands aren’t famous at all, they were fighting the hard life, playing small shows and looking for record deals in the wrong places. The best of those bands was Arcades, a four-piece from Athens, Georgia who performed two types of live shows. Either, slow and precise for the more sophisticated people or like mad people who want to get a point across. So, when we got the chance to talk with their lead vocalist Amber Lowell, we instantly hoped to record with her. So our conversation was awkward but we did end up getting the OK from her and we brought her into the studio. Amber is a hard girl to record with though, she’s heavy into some...bad stuff so recording with her was pretty volatile.

Sound:

The genre of this song falls into the ‘Chillwave/Glo-Fi’ movement. We let Amber record not only vocals on this track but also keyboards so that it would have the Chillwave feel. The song begins with the sound of distant drumming, slow and precise. For 20 seconds, the sound gets closer and closer until finally it stops.

At this point, five seconds of silence and then the keyboards chime in. The distant drumming comes back and the keyboards, cheerful tune remains constant through the song. There isn’t any guitar work for this song, only a steady bass-line like that of a 70’s funk song.

The production of this song is considerably lo-fi, so it has alot of the feedback of the bass still in and fuzzy sounds that can be heard.

Lyrics:

I’ve got a home now, I’ve got a home now
I’ve found my place in the world and it’s not here
It’s anywhere you choose to be near
I can still teach you if I remember how

Days be days and past be past
Tours last forever and never stop
My only home, is these tiny outlet shops

Far far away, I can’t keep my mind above the gutter
I wanna gooooooo, I wanna goooooo
Somewhere you’d never knooooooow

I’ve got a home now, I’ve got a home now
I’ve found my place in the world and it’s not here
It’s anywhere you choose to be near
I can still teach you if I remember how

Days be days and past be past
Tours last forever and never stop
My only home, is these tiny outlet shops

Far far away, I can’t keep my mind above the gutter
I wanna gooooooo, I wanna goooooo
Somewhere you’d never knooooooow

Now I’m live in the city, waning right and left
Hold on, hold on, hold on (for a moment)
Colder yet there, I’m standing here
Waiting for time to pass

"This'll sound lame, but I love the Book of Love. As should every other sane person on the planet. Ever since you guys emerged as the winners of that 'Around the World' contest a year or so ago, I've been anxiously awaiting to see whether you'll live up to the hype. And then I thought you disbanded, which sucked. Glad to see I was wrong! As I'm a huge sucker for chilled-out ambience, I must admit that 'Tiny Outlet Shops' is is one of my favorite tracks of 2011. I'd say it's about time you'd finish your fucking album, fellas."

-Eric Quillington
Kid Anything- Indie/Britpop/Shoegaze; influenced by Sigur Ros, XXYYXX, Kanye West, Blur, Oasis

(Bringing together an eclectic group of influences, Ulysses' songs are sung with carefree abandon by Nick Junk)

Kurt Ulysses - Songwriter, Guitarist, Backup Vocalist
Nick Junk - Vocals, Mojo

Infinite- Alternative/Experimental Rock; influenced by Muse, Radiohead, and The Beatles

(Known best for their experimental music and their frontman's eccentric behavior, the band disbanded after Eric Quillington's death to pursue solo careers or, in Matt Robert's case, peace of mind. Infinite released four albums over the course of their career; Blue Nebula, Midnight Skies, Insomnia, and Dancing about Architecture.)

Eric Quillington (Deceased) - Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar, Piano, Primary Lyricist
Matt Roberts - Bass
Greg Oldson - Drums, Backup Vocals, Secondary Lyricist
Amelia Florentine - Keyboards, Piano, Lyricist, Backup Vocals

"When asked 'how do you write?' I invariably answer, 'one word at a time', and this answer is invariably dismissed. But that's all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That's all. One stone at a time. But I've read you can see that motherfucker from space without a telescope."

Laura: OHMYGODTHATMEANSSOMUCHFROMYOUTHANKSSOMUCH. Haha, seriously though, Tiny Outlet Shops was probably only good because Amber helped us with her wonderful Chillwave stuff. Really, listen to Arcades, we owe them everything. As for that debut album...we'll see once Pete gets back from Big Brother until then, I'm gonna be completely silent and jot down a few ideas. These 3 songs will probably be on the tracklisting though.
