ALTERNATIVE PRESS, IN THE STUDIO WITH MISERY LOVES COMPANY

Following Misery Loves Company's decision to restructure and re-record their debut album, Alternative Press have been granted permission to be in the studio all week as we conduct interviews, get exclusive performances and an insight into what the album will hold. The pop-punk Californian quartet is composed of Lead Vocalist and Rhythm Guitar player Ryan Williams, Lead Guitarist and new member Nathan Barker, bassist Riley Donahue and controversial drummer Josh Heyler. You can check out a full statement from the band regarding this situation on their site misery-loves-company.com, original huh?

PART 1

First pictures of where Misery Loves Company will record their debut album. The studio is based in Los Angeles, Californi, so is very close to where the boys call 'home'. The studio is paid for by their record label Studio 60 Records, who the band say have been very supportive over their decision to delay their album release.

This is where the band will spend most of their time together, whether it be writing or just chilling. They will all be pleased to hear that WiFi is available so their thumbs can continue to update twitter. It is a nice area for the band and is very spacious which is a need for recording an album, bands often spend all the hours of the day and even night in here and its good to have some space.

UserPostedImage

The baby itself, the band have access to top class equipment and have been given everything necessary for recording a fantastic debut album. Without giving much away to begin with, the band have especially asked for the Piano to be installed into the studio, interesting, for what we reason we wonder? Of course, this feature will also show you who will be recording the album and who will be featuring unless of course they do it the modern way of recording it in a separate studio and sending their parts.. how times have changed.

Here is a quick interview we had with the band as they we're settling into their new home for the next few weeks.

AP: So, what are your thoughts on the studio?
Ryan: Awesome! Yeah, we really liked it, everything we requested is here all instruments we are going to experiment so thats really cool. So much more space than i thought, which is a really good thing, although after a few days its going to feel like a small space [laughs].
Riley: Yeah, big thanks to Studio60 for getting this sorted!

AP: We know you don't want to dwell on the cancelled album, but what was your main reason behind delaying it?
Ryan: Y'know it was really just because we weren't happy with it. After recording first time round, we we're like YES! This is awesome, but then we listened to other records like Riot! In The Boulevard's and realized wow, that's really polished.. ours sounded a little rough around the edges. So we thought, your debut album says alot about you as a band, so if their going to talk about it, make sure you give them something good to talk about!

AP: So, this is the first time that Nathan will be recording as an official member, how does it feel?
Nate: Really really cool [laughs]. Nahh, its really good to be an actual member now because i can really express my views on what we're doing where previously i was just doing what they wanted, no questions asked.
Ryan: Hey, you telling me you didn't like what we we're doing last time? Ladies and Gentlemen we are now recruiting for a new guitarist [laughs].

AP: You all sound more relaxed and chilled out this time, what's the reason behind this?
Josh: I think its the fact that we've been here before really. We aren't just jumping into the deep end anymore, we are walking down the steps into the shallow pool. If that makes sense, we know whats required and its not actually that scary.
Ryan: Nice swimming pool reference... [laughs]

AP: So, any hints on who will be producing or featuring on the album?
Ryan: Well well, that would be giving it away. But, i now realize your going to be here all week so you will find out.. anyway. Well, Sol Carter is going to produce 1 or 2 tracks, but we're still looking to secure some signatures on who will work with us on it. You will know soon, thats all im going to say.
Josh: As far as guest vocalists, we are looking to have 2-3 on the album. We haven't got anyone secured thus far, but ill tell you we want a female vocalist for definite, we have a few people in mind and we think you will be really impressed by it! We have also contacted a male vocalist, we aren't going to tell you his name incase he flat out rejects us.. that would be embarrassing. But yeah, we are open to mroe guests on the album.
Ryan: Family oriented band... or friends [laughs].

AP: Are you still a pop-punk band? And which directions will you be taking this time round?
Ryan: Yeah for sure we're still a pop-punk band. Even though i hate giving us a label because i think we're more than that, at times we can be Coldplay-esque other times we can be one of the heaviest bands around. Directions.. directions, am, we want to experiment more. I mean, have more than just emo-heartbreak songs, i mean sure the kids like that but we want to be more diverse. We are going to experiment with electro, now im not talking dance or house music, i mean, dont hate, but a little auto-tune. If it works, then we would like to add a little bit of that to give effect. But yeah, we want to make some heavy songs, like we used, but also lighter pop based songs.
Josh: I really wanna add the bongos to it.
Nathan: That would be fucking awesome! Some strings in their maybe? [laughs]
Ryan: Should never have mentioned that. We are pleased to announce Misery Loves Company will be working with Katherine Jenkins [laughs].

AP: Finally, how much songs have you written for the album and do you plan on writing more?
Ryan: Yeah we've wrote about 15, i wanna write around 20-25. So then we have a diverse choice of which ones we feel would suit the record and which would be better of used a different way like a b-side or something. But yeah, its really exciting times here, can't wait to get it going! We would like to say once again, sorry to the fans. We promise to make it up to you with this record!

Check back tomorrow for part 2 of our In The Studio special with Californian rock band Misery Loves Company. Where their will be more interviews, song previews, lyric previews and some announcements about the album.

Bikki : Nice place you got there, and good to hear more people mixing up the styles and instruments, it's what we love to do at DBM. Spread the word, stay madcore.
Joshy : In other words, Bikki wants to sing and possibly play cowbell with you.
Bikki : COWBELL SOLO! *breaks out the cowbell*

PART 2

In today's issue, Misery Loves Company will be announcing who will feature on their album, which songs from the previously cancelled album will be on the record as well as a light-hearted Q&A session with the band.

Only one day has passed and the band are already feeling the effects of studio life. The long hours started yesterday, which means for the band less sleep, less free time and a quote from Ryan Williams "less happiness". The picture below is the first thing we saw when walking into the studio this morning. He certainly does look happy, but the other two, well, ill leave that for you to decide.

UserPostedImage

Now, yesterday frontman Ryan Williams told us that the band we're looking to have more guest vocalists on this album to match the different variety of songs they are looking to include. After a long day of calling people, he finally got 3! Here's what Ryan has to say on the whole thing;

Quote:
"Well, yeah i did say im going to announce the confirmed guest vocalists we have on the album so far. I stress so far, because we're still working to get more even if its for bonus track.. we want them! Ok ok, first things first. First to appear on a song titled Biting My Lip will be our good friend Alex Ward from Chasing The Sun. Alex has got a tremendous vocal range and some kick-ass screaming! Also, Biting My Lip will be a double bill feature.. so, we're also very pleased to announce that Sam Maine of The Verdict Is Vengeance will feature on that track! Sam is one of the best modern metal singers out there, serious, this guy can sing, sing sing (scream, scream, scream). Ok, and the final person i have to confirm today is someone the band really wanted to work with, she's not usually someone a pop-punk band would want featuring, but she has an incredible voice and we we're desperate to get her on. So, without further delay, we're over the moon to announce the amazing Chloe will lend her vocals for a track on our album! Its a really interesting bunch we've got confirmed so far and we hope you will enjoy. Also, by tomorrow i hope to confirm to you the final guest's we will have on the record. Exciting!"

Dance-Pop superstar Chloe will lend her vocals

So, there you have it folks; Alex Ward, Sam Maine and Chloe will all be featuring on Misery Loves Company's debut album. Alex and Sam will feature on a track named Biting My Lip, and if that title isn't enough to tell you how this song will go down.. we're here to help. Early details suggest its going to be really heavy! Ryan Williams confirmed yesterday that the band want to explore different styles more including some of the heaviest things they have ever done.. so, having a Metalcore vocalist and a Post-Hardcore vocalist together in a song tells us that this is maybe what he's talking about. Then their comes a complete opposite approach, featuring Dance-pop star Chloe. The London born singer will feature on a track yet to be titled, and again we can maybe paint a clearer image of what this song will be like from the hints the band have given us. Its not a surprise that Misery Loves Company love making ballads, they thrive on making people teary-eyed and from the early indications this song will be no different. If your excited about this album as we are, then you better put on your seat-belt because it will only get better. What? Too much cliche?

Finally, drummer Josh Heyler is here to tell us which songs have not been scrapped from the past album and will be on the next record as well as the new tracks.

"Well, the album itself will have 14 tracks, then we're hoping to have 2-3 Bonus Tracks along with that. But, the songs we are keeping are Darkest Nights our debut single which charted number 7 and went gold this week thanks to our incredible fans! Take It Away which is the only song that is co-written by me.. yeah, i suck [laughs]! A song titled Everytime, but that aint the original title of the track. Everytime was set to be just a Bonus Track of Our Last Summer but we really liked it and agreed that it should be on this album. So we have them 3 and we can also confirm the names of another 2 tracks entitled Let Go and Biting My Lip featuring Alex and Sam."

Ok, enough of the seriousness (for now) we sat down with Ryan and Josh for a Q&A session whilst Riley and Nate we're working hard... And lets just say some of the questions we're, unexpected. None-the-less this was good, as it allowed the band to be themselves and have some fun, here's how it went:

AP: What's your favorite body part and why? Annie, PA
Ryan: Interesting one, i would say probably say my Vagina. For undisclosed reasons...
Josh: Possibly, my legs. I really don't think i could live without them.

AP: Josh, will you marry me? Carly, MA
Josh: ... No [both laugh]. Me and Ryan are already married, sorry.

AP: [laughing] Guys, how does it feel to know girls masturbate over you? Laura, CA
Ryan: Good.. very good.
Josh: Cool!

AP: What do you guys do when you don't play shows? Carmen, Barcelona
Ryan: Well, basically.. get fucked up! But i realize that this may be a PG-13 issue, so, i enjoy golfing!
Josh: Well i-
Ryan: No point in asking him, there is enough pictures to show what he does [laughs]
Josh: Yeah... stay in school mmkay.

AP: What advice would you give people who fail there exams? Emma, London
Ryan: Join a band.
Josh: Yeah, it worked for Ryan... [laughs]

AP: Have you ever googled yourself? Chip, TX
Josh: Actually we googled Ryan today and it crashed the computer.. so we don't plan on doing it again.
Ryan: Valuable lesson kids, don't google me.. why would you google me?

AP: If you could have sex with any historical figure, would it be? Freddie, NY
Ryan: [laughs] Its gotta be William Wallace.. that Scottish accent.. mhmm.
Josh: Disturbing image. Ahh, mines would be the hot chick from like the 1800's-
Ryan: Dude they weren't hot back then.. they we're all hairy and shit.
Josh: What a false statement, they are just as nice back then, minus the make-up.

AP: Where is the weirdest place you've fallen asleep? Jacob, MI
Ryan: In my friends' Moms bedroom. You could imagine how awkward it is when your friends Mom tells you to get out of her bed.
Josh: Probably on the roof of Ryan's house.
Ryan: Oh yeah i remember that, Josh was wasted one night in mine, so we tied him to my chimney until morning [laughs] It was genius.
Josh: Bastards..

AP: Are you guys virgins if so, what age did you lose your virginity? Amy, MA
Ryan: Yes... yes we are Amy.
Josh: And we hope you are too!
Ryan: I actually lost mine at 16, it was on the back of a bus on a school trip. I remember that day..
Josh: I remember that girl [laughs]. I lost mine at 14, i was drunk.. and immature. [both laugh].

AP: Ok, we got time for a few more. If your band members we're all drowning, who would you save? Mike, UT
Ryan: Hmm, tough one. Probably Nate-
Josh: Yeah Nate can't swim, id save him.
Ryan: And he is the coolest, why the fuck would i save Josh or Riley? [laughs]
Josh: Word.

AP: Where do babies come from? Jessica, Dublin
Ryan: California.
Josh: Your bellybutton.
Ryan: I remember i used to think that
Josh: What do you mean.. "used"...?
Ryan: Moving on.

AP: Who in the band has the best pick-up lines? Radanshad, India
Ryan: Woww! I applaud you, fucking awesome name!
Josh: I thought you we're gunna mention someone from India likes us, thats pretty huge!
Ryan: Anyway, i would say probably you Josh.. especially the most corny and cheesy ones.
Josh: hey, dont hate the player.. hate the game [both laugh]

AP: Final question, a serious one. What would you jobs be if you weren't in a band? Numerous Askers
Josh: Probably running for president..
Ryan: Good choice, good choice. Id say id be playing in the NFL, yeah.

AP: Thank you everyone for sending in your questions! Sorry we couldn't answer them all.

Check back tomorrow for part 3 of our In The Studio special with Californian rock band Misery Loves Company. Where their will be more interviews, song previews, lyric previews and some announcements about the album.

ALTERNATIVE PRESS, IN THE STUDIO WITH MISERY LOVES COMPANY

You can check out a full statement from the band regarding this situation on their site misery-loves-company.com, original huh?

PART 3

As we walked into the studio today for day 3 of the 5 part special, we felt a real sense of excitement in the air with today being the first day of recording. The band have done writing with the exception of a few songs, they are now ready to get down to the tiresome business. Despite this, everyone in the room looks like little kids on Christmas, real excitement is flowing round the studio, we we're taking bets on how long it would last.. lets just say Phil (Cameraman) got it correct, 1 hour. During this first hour though, the band got a lot of work done! And today we're here to bring you some exclusive previews of the song's they are currently recording plus more news on guest artists appearing on the album.

We guess by now you have already heard, that Misery Loves Company will be working with no other than the infamous Kamikaze Kate on a song in their upcoming record. Kate has been involved in a high-profile relationship with Cassie Bitch, this is causing controversy already as one of Kate's ex's Josh Heyler, happens to be the drummer of Misery Loves Company. Awkward, right? This was fueled on twitter, with Josh ranting about being "fucked off" that Kate will be working with the band, however frontman Ryan has reiterated that their will be no problems during recording the as-of-yet unnamed track which is set to be recorded tomorrow.

UserPostedImage
Josh and Kate's relationship which ended in a train-wreck. Both have been warned to stay out of each others way.

Anyway, enough of this gossip shenanigans.. the band began recurring today and we got some exclusive previews of some of the song's they recorded. For legal reasons, we are not permitted to post the whole video of the song's we recorded but, we are allowed to bring you previews and pictures of Alex Ward recording for the much anticipated Biting My Lip.

The first song the band started recording is a track tentatively titled 'Let Go'. We we're given no indications on what the song will be like from the band but we got a glimpse of Ryan recording for it.

"And when its time to die
We’ll look up to the sky and imagine we can fly"

UserPostedImage
Ryan recording vocals.

We we're then treated to the first preview of what promises to be the "heaviest" song the band have ever done, with Alex Ward recording his bit for the track titled "Biting My Lip" which also features Sam Maine of The Verdict Is Vengeance, who is due to record his part tomorrow.

"Your bullshit doesn't work on me no more, i let you do what you want, i sit back and bite down on my own lip"

UserPostedImage
Alex screaming down the mic.

UserPostedImage
Guitarist Nate Barker records for a song titled "Everytime".

We snuffed around a little more to no avail which is the reason today's issue is going to be shorter. However, the band have told us that they will play us an acoustic demo tomorrow of one of the new songs! So, folks, get ready for the first taste of the new MLC record. Not only that, tomorrow will give us more drama and guest performers as Sam Maine, Kamikaze Kate, Chloe and Lily Williams all pop down to the studio to record vocals for tracks on the album!

Following Misery Loves Company's decision to restructure and re-record their debut album, Alternative Press have been granted permission to be in the studio all week as we conduct interviews, get exclusive performances and an insight into what the album will hold. The pop-punk Californian quartet is composed of Lead Vocalist and Rhythm Guitar player Ryan Williams, Lead Guitarist and new member Nathan Barker, bassist Riley Donahue and controversial drummer Josh Heyler. You can check out a full statement from the band regarding this situation on their site misery-loves-company.com, original huh?

PART 4

Ok, the issue is only going to be a 4 part special meaning this is the final episode. The reason behind this is that the band are taking a break tomorrow before getting into the nitty-gritty. So, today we will be bringing you more exclusive previews of new songs which will include those featuring the guest vocalists, more interviews with the band and a special announcement! The energy in the studio at the minute is really strong, the vibes that this album is taking are let me say, very different from what Our Last Summer would of been like. We heard the cancelled record, and the early signs of this sound much better!

Now, their has been a lot of negativity surrounding the future of certain artists on Studio 60 Records, and this also happens to be the label Misery Loves Company are on. With the announcement coming from the manager Gia, this morning that within the week they are planning to cut their roster down quite a bit. Jason Smith of MIND have already been told to shoo with indications that it may be due to his antics on reality tv show Big Brother. Much has been made of this and it has sparked many arguments on twitter, with all Misery Loves Company members keeping relatively quiet on the situation. We asked frontman Ryan Williams what are his thoughts on the current situation;

Ryan Williams about potential axe from Studio 60 wrote:
"Well, i actually just posted on twitter to inform the fans that this wont change anything, but ill expand here. We formed Misery Loves Company with no label, no manager, no help and no belief really, we had nobody backing us. Our parents we're telling us to give it up and go to college, make something of our life. But we always knew what we could do, we knew we just needed a break in the industry and thankfully that came. We set up our website, got a really good reception on our early material then before long we we're offered an unbelievable chance at Studio 60 Records. They we're nothing but supportive to us since joining, they 100% backed and respected our decision to scrap the previous record and to start this one. So in that sense, we would be really, really disappointed to lose that backing and support. I know it sounds cliched though but, its not the end if it does happen. We will just get back up and do it all again or even take a different direction and go independant (although this is not something we'd like to do). The world is our oyster. Saying that, we would be bitterly pissed if we we're dropped, we would love nothing more than to continue with Studio 60."

We hope that clears things up for you worried fans, and no matter what, he said that the album will be out by the end of September, so that's that. Looks like the band are set to continue from their impressive debut single Darkest Nights which charted at a high #7 and recently went GOLD. Phew.

Now enough of this depressive talk, the only part of this article that will be sad from now until the end will be.. the lyrics. Trust us, we we're crying like babies at hearing the full song's being recorded, well, i wasn't. Today is the day that Kamikaze Kate, Chloe and Sam Maine all popped into the studio to record their part's. We have to say, they all nailed their job impressively! They are also all on different vibed (is that even a word?) songs which the band promised, Sam is on the aggressive screamo song, Chloe is on a beautiful love ballad which the band have come to make their speciality, whilst Kate is on the most upbeat track on the album.
First into the studio was The Verdict Is Vengeance's lead man Sam Maine who went immediately into gear after a bit of joking around with the band.

"Fuck it, i can't keep up with it, are you a part of it, get me outta it" and "Alright let's just agree to disagree, cause when im with you bitch, you always seem like the wicked fucking witch"

Now that is what i call hardcore! This is the most aggressive lyrics we've ever seen on a Misery Loves Company track even heavier than their post-hardcore younger days. And im so glad they got Sam Maine on it, the song would just not sound the same without him. This is one of the most anticipated tracks of the new album, however i can't see it being released as a single for many reasons not least the language.

We then had the beautiful and delicate Chloe, and the complete opposite to Biting My Lip, this is a much more laid back pop-rock ballad which cries out for radio play. When Chloe entered the studio, the band kinda felt honored in many ways. Josh Heyler had this to say "When you have a pop superstar in your record studio recording with you, you know you've made it!". Interesting take Josh. Anyway, here is the sneaky glimpses we got of the song.

"Remember when, we’d stare right at the stars, We would pick out which one was ours"

This song promises to be a fan favorite and attract new fans, as its laid back acoustic feel with a strong build up into real Misery Loves Company comes. Sorry for the vague description, its all we're able to tell you at the minute!

Then comes Kamikaze Kate, and to say their was an elephant in the room when she arrived is an understatement. With 3 band members greeting her telling her how excited and stoked they are to have her feature whilst one little Josh sat back watching. It became evident what was happening and soon Ryan had a little word with Josh. So recording began, and Kate was soon up in the recording room, here's what we got.

"Put your glass in the air, tell em that you don't care"

Unfortunately that's all we caught of Kate's recording session. It was sound like a really different song for Misery Loves Company, and one which they enjoyed as a band recording. Another positive thing came by the end of recording, Josh and Kate had words. They spoke on friendly terms, what a turn around. I bet the band did not have this in mind whilst acquiring Kate's services for the album. Anyway, we are not a gossip column, moving on.

Ok, final part of this entire series coming up! We will be with Ryan and Nate as they answer a few questions and announce something really important!

AP: Ok, so, when can we expect the album to be finished up and the release date?

Ryan: Well, we're hoping to have album wrapped up within the next few weeks. We are lucky because we already recorded lots of demos of some of these songs so there ain't as much work to be done. But yeah, obviously that will take a while then to finalize it and shit. But yeah, we hope to have in in your hand by the end of September. Optimistic, we know, but why not, we owe it to the fans.

AP: Are you going to release a single and/or a music video soon?

Ryan: Yeah, again it wont be for a few weeks but we want to have a new single out there soon and a music video to accompany it. Nate is a pretty sick director, so yeah we want him to do it! But he wont so we'll probably bring someone in for it.

Nate: I really like music videos, they can show a lot about a band. I really wanna release Biting My Lip! Its a sick song!

AP: Final question. Touring?

Ryan: That's actually our announcement! Ok, so we are going to be touring for the release of the album from mid-September to around late October. Its going to be all around America and Canada. We are really stoked about and if it proves a success we want to move on to liek South America and Europe afterwards.. we love Europe!

Nate: Yeah, as far as support acts go we may be taking our friends in a band called Stay Cool, Skip School, there a bunch of young guys who play indie-pop-rock-punk kinda music haha. But yeah we are still searching for a support act, so stay tuned to be find out!

So thats it folks. Our 4 day special interview with Misery Loves Company has come to an end. As always though we will be first to bring you updates on the progress of the record as well as other music news regarding other bands. Thank you for watching/reading, its been a pleasure bringing this to you! AP

Kate : Fucking brilliant working with you guys again! Put your ass - erm, glass in the air! Actually, no, I like mine better. Should have done that. Tossers. And - kamikaze - Josh, you're not so much of a wanker as I thought you were. Still are one. Just not as much.

OOC : Great thread and glad to be part of it! (:
