He then gets down and goes to Eric.

Jason's words surprise Eric somewhat, as he's not under the impression that he's in any immediate danger. Perhaps he just means any type of threat; rape, angry mobs, etc. Probably not rape, though. Seems like a highly unlikely possibility.
