As promised, here is a list of songs we've recorded that are available for download for US$0.99 per song. All money raised goes directly to fund various charities, covering cancer, AIDS, poverty and childrens hospitals. No money goes into our pockets at all, the entire 99c will go to charity.
The songs are each their own. They are listed only in the order in which they were recorded. You may purchase what you like and play or group them however you like. Put them straight on to your mp3 player, put them on CDs with other bands' songs that you like. Make your own album of them as you see them fitting together. Make your own artwork and title for the album. Send it to us if you like. Modern technology is making music easier to be something collaborative, something to share. If you take one of our songs and make a remix or a cover, feel free to send it to us and, if you wish, make it available on this website for further download, and help raise further funds for charity.
Tracks
1. On My Own [Walkingshaw, Edmondson & Blackwell] 3:47
Played live at Festival de Musica, this song aims to combine a barnstorming, arm-in-arm-singalong chorus, with lyrics of self-reflection and coming to terms with who you are, both your good traits and your short-comings. Simple, power-chord driven melodies, verse-chorus-verse-chorus structure. Not reinventing the wheel, but it's instantly catchy.2. Yeah, Sure, Riot...Whatever [Holland & Walkingshaw] 4:05
Pilot at their most angry. It's about the London riots and getting pissed off about them, but then thinking, well we did some fucked up stuff in our youth, and wondering if our drug-taking and misbehaving could have turned into senseless violence if we were more bored. It's got this vicious sounding electro sound that sounds a bit like Kasabian, and the vocals are delivered in a way that is somehow a mix of folk and hip-hop, which is just perfect for the song. Nick really nailed the vocals.3. Medicine's For Pussies [Edmondson, Catalano & Blackwell] 2:32
Playful, cheeky Pilot, similar to (debut album) Bullets & Broken Glass's vintage. Jangly guitars and lyrics about legal and illicit drug use give way to a secy funk bass line in place of a chorus. Nick explains it came about from his Mum expressing concern at the cold and flu meds, anti-histamines, paracetamol and ibuprofen at his house, and the irony of that given his previous history of marijuana and cocaine use.4. You Took It Too Far [Edmondson & Holland] 4:49
Our take on a dance track. Nick and Stephen's 'Lightyears' dance project never came to anything, but clearly the desire to make dance music is still there. It's a bit like Daft Punk's Around The World in terms of having one lyric repeated over and over with the music gradually building.5. Just Pretend [Edmondson, Walkingshaw & Holland] 7.37
Starts as a really understated, minimalist, poetic number with a bit of a jazz feel to it. That continues for about four minutes before building into an old-school rock and roll riff (think Led Zeppelin meets AC/DC...not to blow one's own trumpet). This then gives way to a complex, psychedelic instrumental section over the last two minutes of the song. Clint explains it started as an attempt to write a song in the style of The XX, which then grew into something unexpected and is influenced by some of Clint's favourite bands in many different styles (eg The XX, Stateless, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Kasabian, The Beatles).6. Parasite [Edmondson] 2:57
Old-school, annoyingly catchy Pilot. Set to be a live favourite in the style of songs like Satellite and Goodness Gracious. Lyrics are seemingly random, but do seem to have some reference to an frustration with a former partner, so it's likely to be a song about Nick's ex-wife.7. Hired Gun [Walkingshaw & Holland] 4:00
Probably the closest we'll ever come to a glam rock song. Starts with a jungle drum beat before a sexy bassline and guitar riff kick in. Clint says he was listening to some Aerospliff albums and got jealous of the way their are revered.8. Neon Water [Walkingshaw & Catalano] 4:15
A psychedelic jam, with surprisingly druggy lyrics for a band that apparently have been off illicit drugs for several months.9. Tiny Town [Edmondson & Holland] 2:01
Keyboard-driven tune inspired by an episode of Two & A Half Men (Yes, they watch Two & A Half Men). It's an interesting tune which Nick describes as Klaxons meets The Wiggles.10. Sniffing Glue [Edmondson, Walkingshaw, Catalano, Blackwell & Holland] 4:38
Instrumental that starts out really trippy and psychedelic and finishes sounding like an 80s electro number. The title comes from Andrew referring to Clint's quote in an interview that they've done all drugs except heroin and sniffing glue, and saying that after listening to this song maybe they have been sniffing glue.11. I'm Big In Europe [Walkingshaw & Holland] 5:10
Another electro song that suggests that we've been listening to too much Klaxons. Title comes from a T-shirt that Andrew wears to bed, which in turn was taken from a shirt being worn by an actor in a Bundaberg Rum commercial. Would go down a treat at parties, though Stephen reports he's planning on doing a techno remix and releasing it on this site.12. Mudlark [Walkingshaw] 3:02
Started with some playful mucking about on the guitar which gradually turned into this indie number with a Vampire Weekend sort of flavour. Lyrics are about a carefree Summer. The title was changed from 'Summer' to 'Mudlark' after Clint saw a mudlark (type of bird) looking like it was injured and then suddenly coming good and flying away. He thought it had a playful spirit similar to his as he was making the song so renamed it after the bird.13. Get On It [Edmondson] 4:25
A belter of a song about partying and having good, drunken times with friends. Nick explains the title is a phrase Andrew started saying when he wanted people to start listening to a band he had discovered or go to an event he wants to go to. For example instead of saying "I've discovered a band called Fenech-Soler, they're quite good so maybe you should give them a listen," he'd say, "Fenech-Soler. Get on it." The phrase has recently become a catchphrase of the band, and forms the main part of this song's very catchy chorus.14. Sock Puppets [Walkingshaw & Blackwell] 4:50
One of the most beautiful songs we've done, in our opinion. A ballad that starts out acoustic and gradually builds up and up until your heart could just burst. We've not been listening to Biffy Clyro but it feels a bit like "Machines" from the album "Puzzle". Strange title, but it comes from a lyric in the song which is a reference to a How I Met Your Mother episode Andrew had been watching just before he wrote the lyrics.15. iKnow [Edmondson] 1:55
Crazy, bullet-fast song about some weird conspiracy theory about technology companies trying to keep us stupid to take over the world, that Nick came up with for a laugh16. Come Find Me [Edmondson & Walkingshaw] 3:13
A pull-on-the-hearstrings song that has the stadium-sized grandstanding and ambition of Kings Of Leon and the playfulness of Two Door Cinema Club. Sounds like it would be a single, but not a lead single, on most albums. Probably most similar in sound to songs like Russian Bride or If You Want It, but with more serious lyrics about a long lost love.17. Black Heart Kids [Holland] 4:47
Another song about the London Riots. This one is more melancholic and gives off a real sense of hopelessness about the future, with the main hook in the chorus being "Leave it in the hands of the black heart kids." Unlike anything else Pilot have done, a lot more emo than they're used to. Has a hint of Gotye about the instrumentation as well.18. There's A Lesson In This Story Somewhere [Edmondson & Catalano] 3:36
Created recorded and uploaded within 48 hours of first listening to the Bombay Bicycle Club album, "A Different Kind Of Fix." Has the indie sound of Pilot's early work, but with a more mature feel than...you know...the songs about taking drugs and masturbating. The theme of the song is about learning (or not learning) from your mistakes.19. Put You First [Walkingshaw, Holland & Blackwell] 4:29
Another love song. It's similar in theme to Sock Puppets, in terms of being about not feeling you're good enough or able to give enough love to someone. It starts with a slowly building, minimalist sounding bassline, before growing into a barnstorming singalong built on powerchords, much like On My Own.These 19 songs are all that have been recorded in our time in England. We're now preparing for our upcoming tours of the UK and Aus/NZ.
