But does that mean you refuse to let your opinion of Slipknot change since you stopped listening to them eight years ago (or whatever it's been) in favour of your established musical preferences, or that you have semi-objectively dipped to their career from time to time and come to the conclusion they have no ongoing value?

The latter. They don't offend me greatly, but they really don't excite me in anyway either. So like I say, I'd rather listen to music I like than listen to a band I know that I'm not so keen on.

On the self/titled there was what you could broadly call rap:

Ten points for anyone who notices the Public Enemy shout out.

Wow, a topic about a band that isn't targeted towards 13 year old girls. Anyway, I think Slipknot is a metal band but they are more nu-metal than anything. Slipknot is such an ass kicking band though. I would love to see them in concert at least once in my life.

slipknot was the first band i ever really loved. i collected all their albums (buying a record at that time was, er, a big deal. y'know, piracy and all) and even snatched a bootleg copy of the first one (from '96?). even went to their show where they played together with slayer. sometime after that it just fizzled out, and thus began my third phase of Serious Music Listening -- the golden metallica era. but that's another story.

i still think mate. feed. kill. repeat. is a pretty solid album; funky as well, though the production is atrocious. for nostalgic reasons i can still appreciate a couple of songs on the 'real' debut too, but other than that . . . me and slipknot are over. :[
or maybe not

Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory is one of my favorites. And it's 16.7 million copies in the US, by the way. Still, Iowa was also kickass.

Johnny Young / Vocals & Guitar
Sev Young / Lead Guitar
Fred Johnson / Bass
Vic Dunlop / Drums

If you spell Chuck Norris in Scrabble, you win. Forever.

I don't think that's true.

Nu metal was the alt rock of metal. They were REM rather than AC/DC.

I see what your saying but been more precise, jazz fusion could be heard with Athiest and Cynic, funk stylings with Faith No More (if you want to call them metal), hip hop collaborations in Antrax with Public Enemy etc who all go much further back than Slipknot but anyways..

Faith No More being commonly regarded as the progenitors of Nu Metal.
