So, the singer-songwriter from the land of cheese and baguettes is back with an immense new single, entitled At Home. A lovingly crafted Indie Rock number, it is different from her usual pop folk outings, but she says it should give an indication as to what the album will sounds like. Oh, she's released a music video for it too, but that's plain fucking weird and will be shown shortly. The song was produced by none other than Jason "fucking" Smith.

AT HOME

1. At Home
2. April Come She Will (Simon & Garfunkel cover)

1. At Home (5:15) (Indie Pop/ Baroque Pop)

A short intro can be heard when the drummer taps his sticks together at a medium pace three times, before a wall of sound appears, including a piano, acoustic guitar, bass, the drums and a slide guitar which can be faintly heard in the background. The melody itself is quite slow and ethereal, and almost dreamy in a sense that it isn’t particularly minor or major. The piano, an instrument which Madeleine Rameau also regularly plays, is the main instrument here and the furthest forward in the mix, so you can hear the vocal melody that will become apparent in the verses being played out. The acoustic guitar is slowly strumming in the background, with the slide guitar using echo effects, due to the production of Jason Smith, making it sound even more ethereal. Jason decides to revert to bass for this song and plays a quite simple, yet very effective bass line, which is audible enough to matter, yet also relatively subtle. The chorus introduces the song with many layers of Madeleine’s vocals singing it in a falsetto tone. The piano is at the higher end of the scale here. The tune goes on until it reaches the first verse, when the slide guitar drops out and the tune gets slightly quieter. The piano takes on a different tune, one more reminiscent of the guitar melody. Madeleine is singing in a soulful, emotional jazz voice, which is quiet, but you can still make out what she is saying. After the verses finish, it goes back into the chorus, except with organs, similar to the Baroque era of classical music, appear, playing a mournful melody similar to that of the guitar, except they are barely audible, so as it doesn’t distract from the actual song itself. It goes to another verse again, except only the acoustic guitar and drums are audible for the first part. On the third line, a clunky piano and funkier bass are suddenly introduced into the mix, as well as an alien sounding Theremin courtesy of Jason Smith stuck in the background of the song, making it feel even more dream like. Following this, two more choruses play themselves out, and everything is kicked up a little. The instruments are louder, the vocal layers in the background are getting more emphatic and there are now symphonic elements such as violins in the song. This goes on until the last two lines, where everything cuts out to Madeleine and her guitar, with her singing in a falsetto. The song then fades out with that same guitar melody and Madeleine vocalising.

Lyrics:

Sometimes I get the feeling...
I’m moving past the healing.
And you can’t drink the holy water,
Just to make sure that you’re still breathing.

You pull the snake from your mouth...
And you swim past your emotions,
You're in a dark place now.
Where feeling is such an amusing notion...
Cause sometimes I get the feeling...
I’m looking towards the ceiling,
You’re a big girl now.
It’s time to begin the kneeling.

I can pull the wire,
And part it from it’s brother,
Your courage I admire...
And for me there is no other.
Every drop of acid rain,
Causes such immense pain,
But I’m a masochist,
So I will remain sane.

Sometimes I get the feeling...
I’m moving past the healing.
And you can’t drink the holy water,
Just to make sure that you’re still breathing.

We both know the reason why...
You chose to carry on and die,
But you have no regrets.
I’ll note your name to carve my eyes.
I’ll believe in anything...
I’m so delirious with joy, I could sing.
We’re all grown ups now.
With a pinch of salt rubbed in.

Sometimes I get the feeling...
I’m moving past the healing.
And you can’t drink the holy water,
Just to make sure that you’re still breathing.

Sometimes I get the feeling...
I’m moving past the healing.
And you can’t drink the holy water,
Just to make sure that you’re still breathing.

I’m at home, I’m at home.
Yes, I can tell I’m at home.

Sounds like: , except with a female on lead vocals.

2. April Come She Will (Simon & Garfunkel cover) (2:57) (Folk/ Folk Pop)

This song is a cover of Simon & Garfunkel and is pretty different to the original, the most notable exception Madeleine and her distinctive jazz-folk-pop-punk vocals. The bright, sunny melody enters the song loudly as well as a tapping on the floor with feet, setting up a beat. Then, to make the song a little different, some soft drumming is introduced, almost like a March beat, but with the urgency and manner of a waltz. A bass is also used here, playing a melody not found in the original. This actually makes it a slightly more presentable and accessible format for people who haven’t heard the original. Another acoustic guitar, playing a slightly more modern and poppier melody can be heard at points. \the vocals then come in, and they sound quite joyous. Like Madeleine truly loves this song. She is singing calmly, with her voice double tracked in the background for emphasis, although on the last line of each stanza, she is on one layer, with her voice echoing slightly. The song then continues in a formulaic pattern like this until the end, where Madeleine plays a small, gentle solo and the drumming stops, leaving the acoustic alone to play the song out. It ends with the guitar on an extended chord, and a small conversation between Madeleine and one of her French peers.

Lyrics (credit to Paul Simon/ Art Garfunkel):

April, come she will,
When streams are ripe and swelled with rain;
May, she will stay,
Resting in my arms again.

June, she´ll change her tune,
In restless walks she´ll prowl the night;
July, she will fly,
And give no warning to her flight.

August, die she must,
The autumn winds blow chilly and cold;
September I´ll remember.
A love once new has now grown old.

For those who haven't heard the original:

Will this single reaffirm Madeleine's status as one of the brightest young things in music? Only time will tell. Enjoy!

I'm very, very impressed. It's nice to know at least one member of the family has gone on to become a talented solo artist. Of course, I'm the new singer of a fucking massive alternative band called Infinite, so I guess it's a fair compromise. But, still; since this is only the beginning, I imagine it'll just get better from here on out.

- Amelia Florentine

(OOC: Awesome job, as always. Your lyrics always put mine to shame, and not just because you take the time to write more than three verses, haha. I love your style to this stuff, too; I can instantly tell when something's been written by you, it's awesome.)
Kid Anything- Indie/Britpop/Shoegaze; influenced by Sigur Ros, XXYYXX, Kanye West, Blur, Oasis

(Bringing together an eclectic group of influences, Ulysses' songs are sung with carefree abandon by Nick Junk)

Kurt Ulysses - Songwriter, Guitarist, Backup Vocalist
Nick Junk - Vocals, Mojo

Infinite- Alternative/Experimental Rock; influenced by Muse, Radiohead, and The Beatles

(Known best for their experimental music and their frontman's eccentric behavior, the band disbanded after Eric Quillington's death to pursue solo careers or, in Matt Robert's case, peace of mind. Infinite released four albums over the course of their career; Blue Nebula, Midnight Skies, Insomnia, and Dancing about Architecture.)

Eric Quillington (Deceased) - Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar, Piano, Primary Lyricist
Matt Roberts - Bass
Greg Oldson - Drums, Backup Vocals, Secondary Lyricist
Amelia Florentine - Keyboards, Piano, Lyricist, Backup Vocals

"When asked 'how do you write?' I invariably answer, 'one word at a time', and this answer is invariably dismissed. But that's all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That's all. One stone at a time. But I've read you can see that motherfucker from space without a telescope."

Madeleine: Merci beaucoup, mon cousin génial! And well done on the whole Infinite thing as well :) We should totally collab one day.

OOC: Haha, thanks man :P I still suck at the lyrics part, especially compared to people like you, but I try.

Madeleine: Floptastic eh? I don't know what you mean... thanks I guess. But I'm not trying to be famous, I'm trying to make music that can be appreciated for what it is. If I've learnt anything, it's that fame gets you either pregnant, dead or drugged up. Plus, en mi opinion, fame is best achieved through talent rather than the embarrassment caused by a lack of.

erich:this is the best way to hear simon and garfunkel....someone else singing it.i appreciate their song writing, but cannot bear to hear them sing their tune.maddy does it right, not to mention her own song. which is just like smooshing crackers into dirty shapes. love it. normally i try to stay on suzie's good side, but i gotta dissagree with her.maddy is cute as hell, factor in that accent of hers and......well..let's just say absinthe and citroens arent the coolest things to come out of france.
