Allura Silk: A Future Hip-Hop Titan on the Move
A 2-Part MTV Web-SeriesSway: Allura Silk’s name has been mention on many occasions in the last two years, as a serious contender for a future Hip-Hop veteran. As many of us witness, the girl has bars. But she hopes to become more than a Veteran, titan, star. In her quote, “It isn’t about becoming a star to me, being a veteran in the game is something I think we all as MC’s hope for one day, but to me there is more to it than that”. In a two part web—series here on MTV.com you get to take a look in the young rappers life and witness how it is two be what many call an endangered species, a female in the Hip-Hop World. Sway: I know the last couple of months have been crazy, how is everything going?
Allura: Yes, indeed it has. The last couple of months have been really hectic but exciting. I am excited about all of this.
Sway: I know it has to be, I wanna congratulate you on you signing your deal with Tric-Jam and now we hearing new music. (Smiles openly), things are looking good.
Allura: Yes!! Everything is falling to plan properly and intact. I know there were people who underestimated me and there are some people who still underestimate me. They’ve been wondering, Well, is she ever coming out with new music? But my album isn’t something I want to rush into to. I don’t want to just throw a couple of tracks together, stay a little bit of silly lines on some nice beats and deliver that as the finished package. I care about my music that is my foundation. I am a perfectionist to the core, if It ain’t right than Silky smoove gonna ge tight. *Sway burst out and laughs, Haaaa!* (Allura keens her back over a bit and begins to laugh almost as loud as him and fixes her hair while doing so. She puts her hand on his hand in a friendly manner and says…) No, but seriously though I have to make sure everything sounds and looks perfect. That’s why me and my team are on top of things to make sure things run smoothly.
Sway: So we have the single Bananaz out, we have the E.P dropping December 20th, and we have the album dropping next year. Do you talk to your contemporize/rivals. Because it seems that people in the Hip-Hop or MUSIC world period mention you and Nicki Minaj names in the same sentence a lot.
Allura: Haha, you know Sway. I support all my contemporizes. And to further add, there is no “rivalries”. And if our name gets mentioned in the same sentence, then hey I guess you just have to deal with it. But I don’t really have a relationship with her or a problem with her. I will say though, that we are in the same business and I respect her, but our music is really different and we are two very different artist. But I respect her.
Sway: How does it feel being a part of Tric-Jam and finding a home after being dropped by Chaos?
Allura: You know, (pauses for a moment), With Tric-Jam it feels like a family. Such a family environment you know. Truly we are. All the artist respect each other. They are just a label that totally 100% have it all together. I feel honored to be with them. But with Chaos, I have no ill will against them. I just don’t think that they were ready for an artist like me, and they didn’t know what to do with me. It was okay there. But I am glad I am not there anymore. I am where I belong.
Sway: Now, MTV was with Allura Silk for one week following her around, as she records her album and does press for her E.P. We followed her for seven days and you get to see a lot. Take a look
Allura Silk walks into The Hit Factory Studio in New York City in a pair of gray sweat pants, a baby blue T-shirt, a pair of Ugg boots, a scarf, sunglasses, a jean jacket, and her hair tied up in a bun. She sits with her best friend/hype-man, Omari. Allura’s producer then sits next to them and they begin talking tracks for the album. Allura explains to him that she needs the tracks done by early December so her label can hear them. Her producer then tells her she needs to add more vocals on there. Allura Silk walks into the studio booth. She puts her Dre Beat headphones to her ears and begins to harmonize. Then she begins to rap a bit.
Allura Silk listens to the track and everyone begins to scream, Her producers says, “SHUT IT DOWN! YOU JUST MURDERED IT! Radio stations are gonna love this”. Allura smiles and says “I hope so, I have a feeling this is one of those popular songs on the album that everybody would love. This one is for the streets”.After about 5 hours in the studio Allura and her best friend, Omari, leave The Hit Factory and go to get some dinner.
Allura’s Confessional
Allura Silk: So one of the biggest magazines in the United Kingdom called us, FHM Magazine. For Him Magazine. And they want me to do a spread for them, for their January issue. But…But…the big news is that they want me to do the cover! My first cover was Vibe Magazine but I just am shocked that my music is playing in the United Kingdom and there are people out there who know who I am. It’s just unreal. It’s unreal.
The next day Allura and her team fly out to the U.K to do the interview for the magazine and shoot the cover. The cover is being shot by the director of the Bananaz video, Collin Tilley. This is Allura’s first trip overseas.
Allura’s Confessional I AM SOOOO EXCITED RIGHT NOW!! (Allura Screams). I am going to the U.K to shoot my For Him Mag cover! This is my first time in the U.K. I thank FHM for giving me this opportunity. I am literally shaking. Allura arrives in the U.K 13 hours later. Once she arrives she rest for two hours to get off some of that jet lag. Still tired she gets ready for the show but doesn’t care about being tired because she is in the U.K shooting a cover for FHM. She conducts the interview and shoots the spread. (Here are two photo's from the spread)-photographer; Collin TilleyOver the course of the week MTV follows Allura while she finally finished her E.P and records her album currently.
