‘I Just Want You Back’ is the debut single from American Pop/RnB singer-songwriter Benjamin Luna. It’s set to be released independently and was written by Benjamin Luna and Alicia Lena, they also produced the song together. Benjamin Luna was spotted by Alicia Lena and the two became friends which has led to them working together on the song, Benji also toured with Alicia during her ‘Waking Up’ tour, he played guitar on her tour and made an appearance onstage with her at the 4th Chaos Awards last month, where they performed a duet on two songs. It’s set for release on December 18, 2011 and will be distributed by Itunes and will also be available via Benji’s official website. The funding for the recording costs were met by Alicia Lena and it’s thought that the single is the perfect opportunity for Benji to step out of the shadows, only time will tell.
Song Description & BackgroundHaving become close friends with Alicia Lena, Benji had been working on the song, he felt that there was something missing from the second verse of the song and couldn’t quite finish it, he called Alicia and the two spent time working on the song’s lyrics, according to Benji “For the life of me I just couldn’t quite get that second verse quite the way I wanted it, I needed for it to be from the female’s perspective and after a couple of days of working on it I called up Alicia, we hung out at her home and right away we got it, she listened to what I had written so far and the melody leading into that second verse was where the troubles were coming from, she came up with a slightly different melody and sure enough we managed to finish the second verse pretty quickly.” The two then headed into a New York studio to record the song and with the help of Alicia the recording sessions were funded and the single will be released independently.
The song is very much a ballad, the primary instruments are the drums that introduce the song and the piano that Benji plays throughout, his vocals are crisp and clear, he sings with enthusiasm at the start which quickly turns to a more emotional vocal throughout. His vocals are very soul-influenced, able to raise his voice almost seamlessly from soft emotional vocals to something with more power, the song is a ballad, the music rises and falls throughout with Benji’s piano playing that works well with the difference in emotion with the lyrics throughout.
