WE LOOKED LIKE GIANTS

UserPostedImage

Biography

We Looked Like Giants are a British alternative rock band formed in 2007 by lead vocalist Caleb Morgan, lead guitarist Jason Bradford, and bass guitarist Gavin Brady in London.

Caleb Morgan and Jason Bradford first met in college at the Royal Academy of Music in London, England, back in September 1998. The pair initially started an unnamed duo project during their first year of college, recording over thirty demos in a year, the duo had to heavily rely on using drum machines as neither knew how to play the drums well enough. By 1999, they were playing small gigs at and around the university, but they never gained neither the fan base or label backing to continue the ambitious project. The two remained friends over the years, but went their separate ways after they both graduated in 2002. Morgan moved to New York City soon after graduation where he found a job at Sony Music Entertainment as a songwriter. Bradford on the other hand, stayed in England and became a session guitarist.

In 2007, Bradford was hand-picked by famed singer/songwriter guitarist Ryan Ross Hernandez, to record additional guitars for his second studio album Dark Secret Love. Hernandez was so impressed with Bradford's work, noting his sparse arrangements and use of slide, that Hernandez offered him to join his touring band during the world tour in support of the album. It was during that time that Bradford met fellow Brit, Gavin Brady, who was the bassist during the same tour. After the tour ended, Bradford introduced Brady with his old college friend Caleb Morgan. The three came together and created We Looked Like Giants, which was suggested by Brady. At the time, the band was still without a drummer, and were declined to use drum machines in their music, as Morgan and Bradford had done years prior. The band's line-up was completed when they returned to London in 2008 and former classmate Wilson Cooper joined to take up percussion duties. Cooper had no previous experience playing drums, having taught himself how to play piano, guitar, and bass when he was a teen. He quickly learned the drums and became the final member to join We Looked Like Giants, making the band a quartet.

Inspired by bands like U2 and R.E.M., We Looked Like Giants decided that they would operate as a democracy (and that all future profits would be shared equally). Additionally, the band determined they would fire anyone who used drugs.

Since its formation in 2008, the band has recorded many demos with their own money, and have been building up a fan base, particularly in England, where they have played multiple gigs in the last three years. The band have gained the support of Ryan Ross Hernandez, who has been quoted as calling the band, "the only band who can dethrone Infinite from their title as best band in the world." The group considers the support from Hernandez as a blessing. Hernandez is currently financially supporting We Looked Like Giants, in their recording sessions for their full-length debut album, as an executive producer. It's unknown whether Hernandez is also serving as a music producer for the project. Lead vocalist Caleb Morgan has said of the band's sound that, "we're [We Looked Like Giants] not the heaviest of bands, we're more of a limestone alternative rock band."

We Looked Like Giants are currently signed to Studio60 Records and are expected to release their debut album in early 2012.

Sophia: Kimberly! Soooooo funny! You ask that with every rock band! Hehe! Hiiii!

Kimberly: I'LL MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Now this is what I'm talking about. Although I haven't really heard any of your music yet, you guys genuinely look like the real thing. But what really interests me is that, by looking at your influences, I can already tell that I pretty much have a record collection identical to yours. U2, Muse, Radiohead, Oasis... every single act you've listed is one I adore. Except for Infinite. Those guys are just fucking atrocious. But, with influences this good, it's pretty much a given that I'm going to love your music.

-Eric Quillington

(OOC: 'No, I don't want to battle from beginning to end/I don't want a cycle of recycled revenge/I don't want to follow death and all of his friends'. I was actually listening to the Viva la Vida album while reading this, so that was a neat coincidence. Coldplay are one of my all-time favorite bands, so I'm glad to see someone finally using them. Can't wait to see how you develop this band!)

Kid Anything- Indie/Britpop/Shoegaze; influenced by Sigur Ros, XXYYXX, Kanye West, Blur, Oasis

(Bringing together an eclectic group of influences, Ulysses' songs are sung with carefree abandon by Nick Junk)

Kurt Ulysses - Songwriter, Guitarist, Backup Vocalist
Nick Junk - Vocals, Mojo

Infinite- Alternative/Experimental Rock; influenced by Muse, Radiohead, and The Beatles

(Known best for their experimental music and their frontman's eccentric behavior, the band disbanded after Eric Quillington's death to pursue solo careers or, in Matt Robert's case, peace of mind. Infinite released four albums over the course of their career; Blue Nebula, Midnight Skies, Insomnia, and Dancing about Architecture.)

Eric Quillington (Deceased) - Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar, Piano, Primary Lyricist
Matt Roberts - Bass
Greg Oldson - Drums, Backup Vocals, Secondary Lyricist
Amelia Florentine - Keyboards, Piano, Lyricist, Backup Vocals

"When asked 'how do you write?' I invariably answer, 'one word at a time', and this answer is invariably dismissed. But that's all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That's all. One stone at a time. Caleb Morgan: I can't really say I saw that coming. We do feel a bit more pressure now that we've gotten such good hype surrounding us before even having released a single song. We do love those bands. Jason and I probably spent our entire time in college trying to imitate our heroes like U2, and Radiohead, and Oasis, and failing every time. The wait for hearing from us musically, won't take too long, I promise that.

(OOC: Coldplay is very likely my favorite band of all-time, I'm not ashamed to admit that I know their entire catalog by heart. I've always wanted to do something with their face claim but never figured out anything with much substance to it, up until now. RRH is obviously my focal character but if any other act of mine has the potential to have Ryan take a backseat for a few months, it's this one. Thanks! I have so many ideas for them right now that I'm just trying to balance them out and not overwhelm people.)

BLOG - WLLG Has Reached a Deal w/ Studio60 Records

It's official. We are now signed to Studio60 Records. This means that we've now found a home to release our music for the foreseeable future. We are honoured to be part of the amazing roster Studio60 has. We thank the bosses over there, for the major opportunity they've given us. Which to us is a chance to release our music to whomever wants to listen, anywhere in the world.

In many ways, it's a dream come true for us four. Ever since we inked our names in all those dotted lines, we feel an excitement, an almost childlike excitement. As if this is our Christmas. All four of us have been trying to make a career out of what we've loved to do for the better part of the last fifteen years. And for the first time, we feel as though the dream is not just reachable, but at the brick of happening.

We are currently located somewhere in Liverpool, incognito, just writing and recording a whole lot of songs. We may head overseas to New York City when we are nearing completion of the album. We have enough songs to release three full-length albums at this point, but we just want to put our very best into this record. A debut album is the easiest album to make and also the most difficult. The easy part is that we are running in an absolute clean slate. No one knows what to expect of us, so we have no pressure in proving anything to anyone yet. At the same time, it's the most difficult piece of work we'll ever create, because it is what will likely decide our fate for the next five years. Or even if we'll still be doing this a year from now.

All we can say for now is that we're putting everything we have into this debut album. Not really thinking about singles at this point; what will or won't work on radio. We just want to make a great record, that we'll be proud of, and one that we won't get tired of playing five, ten, twenty, thirty years from now.

BLOG - In-Studio Update #1

This morning marked the first day the four us walked into Parr Street Studios in Liverpool as a signed band. It's kind of an odd feeling seeing that just last week we were playing music for us and for it to sound good for our ears, now we are actually working towards a goal. Today we haven't done much on the recording side of things, all things considered it's been a relaxing day in the studio. What did do today was listening to all the songs we have recorded already. Some songs date as far back as 2008. But we took every single thing we've ever recorded into account today. Completed songs, demos, songs without a chorus or hook, songs with a chorus but lacking verses, etc. We tried to group these songs into four categories: Album contenders, B-sides, Save for Later, and Shit Pile.

The album contenders category has approximately thirteen completed songs under it. All thirteen songs won't make it onto the record and as we continue to write new music, more songs are going to be going into the other categories.

The b-side category is one that we aren't looking into very much at the moment. It has about a solid nine songs/demos and we will probably look at this pile more when we are nearing the completion of the album. You never know, maybe one or two of these songs will sneak in later and take the place in the album's track listing.

The save for later category is made up of mostly unfinished songs, bar one or two demos that sneaked in here. This is the pile that has songs that are very unlikely to make it onto the record. We don't hate them, but these are a bit out-there in one way or another, outside of the idea we have for the record. For example there is one demo on here that we really enjoy but it's written in a way that it works best as a duet with a female. Obviously this being our debut album, we want it all to be us. Maybe when we are on album three (if we make it that far that is) we'll look back at that song and see what we can make happen.

The shit pile is basically what you get. Songs that are shit. They are abysmal. These are a lot of songs pre-date before the band was created in 2008. All four of us before starting this band has very ambitious ideas and they aren't bad in certain standards, but they don't fit in to what we are trying to accomplish as a band. The sound we are trying to grasp just isn't in these songs. Maybe if our debut album fails, we'll sell these songs to pop artists and make a quick buck as well as bank in a songwriter royalty.

I see this week as being one where we take the songs that are contending for a place on our debut album, and seeing what we can tweak and fix and re-record to truly perfect it. Of course, in addition to trying and write more songs, obviously that's something that we weren't prevent if it shall happen.

If you're reading this, please try to stick with us. We promise you the music is coming soon.

- Caleb

BLOG - In-Studio Update #2

Excuse us for the extended period of time we disappeared. A lot has happened in the last month or so since I wrote a blog. I guess the most important change since then has been that we've moved the production of the album to New York City. For nearly five weeks now we've been working at Avatar Studios. We prefer the change of scenario both in the studio and outside of it. The key reason why we are here though, is due to the fact that now serving as our producer is Ryan Ross Hernandez. When we were recording in Liverpool, we were self-producing which works when you have four set of ears within the band, in addition to sound engineers and whatnot. But having someone else handle the soundboards, really does take pressure off of us and just lets us be musicians.

Aside from being a brilliant musician and songwriter as everyone knows Ryan Ross Hernandez to be, he's a pretty smart guy. A few weeks ago the four of us were having dinner with Hernandez and we were discussing about music we like, music we don't like, and somehow the conversation delved into our current situation of a band that is currently recording their debut album. Ryan explained to us that a debut album could be one of two things; either you make an album that is brilliant to the musician ear or you could make an album that is good but reaches a lot of different people. He told us that he felt his debut album was good, but not great, yet he was fine with that as long as he reached a lot of people with it. I guess in someways he was saying that if you made a debut album that built you a large fanbase you'll be able to make other albums afterwards that is less appealing but you like best.

We have a lot of songs currently up on the dry-erase board. We've recorded in its entirely, over twenty songs, while having at least half a dozen more that are just missing vocals or drums before being completed. We have just one more week in the studio before we take a short two week break for the holidays. We will spend this week recording, writing, and listening. While we'll be going back to our respective homes for Christmas and New Years, I can safely say we'll all be working on potential track listings and be ready to share them with each other in January.

We promised we were going to put out music before the end of this year for anyone who wants to hear us and we will. This Friday, December 16th, we will be putting up for streaming a song from us. It will not be the first single off our debut album. It will be a song that probably has very good odds of making it onto our debut album. We won't be releasing this song for radio play or to digital outlets for purchases.

This is just us giving you all a glimpse to what you can expect from us in 2012.

- Caleb

BLOG / NEWS - Swinging on a Daydream / Song Stream

We have kept our promise to you all. You can now stream right here on our website, a song off our debut album, or at least we'll hopefully it makes the final cut. What you are about to hear is a song that is completely recorded, mixed, and mastered. Swinging on a Daydream, was for the most part written while we were still recording in Liverpool, but I never felt it was born there. It feels like it grew much more when we arrived in New York City.

The song is different from what we know of ourselves. It doesn't have a chorus, it doesn't follow any particular song format excepts that it has verses and a outro, which is probably the closes thing to a chorus this song has. It's sound reminds me a lot of some afro-pop and highlife music. Are we intending for our band to head in this direction musically? No, not at all actually. But personally, I feel this gives anyone who listens to it an idea that we aren't going to put ourselves into just one category or genre. I can safety say that no two songs on the record sound anything alike. We each have different influences that we all bring to the table and try to bring it into a middle ground.

Swinging on a Daydream, in a word is about reminiscing. The nostalgic feeling of looking back upon childhood as an adult. About that time when you are a kid looking wide-eyed at the world, admiring the beauty of nature. When you mature and become adults, everything is so thought-out and calculated, it's hard to take solace in what's around you. It's not about longing for being a kid again or wishing you lived those years of innocence any different. It's a reflection of what life was like then. Everything up until the point where I sing, "now when the sky is falling," is suppose to be taken as a dream of sorts.

The outro, that final stanza is honestly my favorite part of the song. This song would mean absolutely nothing if it wasn't for me singing those final lines. It could be singing to your lover, or your best friend, or your mum, or just about pure carefree happiness. I recall smiling very widely when I sung that into the recorder. Swinging on a Daydream, is the most lovely, and joyous song on our debut album. Drummer Will Cooper and bassist Gavin Brady, put a lot of groove into this song. Almost some swagger, if we're even allowed to refer to ourselves as having any sort of swagger.

Enough of me babbling on. We hope you enjoy the song. We will have many more surprises and goodies for all of you who still want to listen to us, continuing to come your way.

Thank you for listening.

- Caleb

Winston: Wow, this is really weird. On first listen, I didn't catch on at all. It was like a mash of premier British musicians from the 80's up, even calling back to the days when I listened to Genesis daily. The prog rock influences are apparent with the guitar effects that one might miss if not a player him/herself. It all felt right but at the same time, conflicting in a way but then, then on my second listening I focused more on Mr. Morgan's voice and lyrics and on my third listen connected all of the pieces together which made this already solid song soar to new heights. You have got yourselves a new fan.

BLOG - Happy New Year / In-Studio Update #3

Happy new year everyone. With the throwing away of the old calenders from 2011, also comes our time to start getting serious on finishing this album. We came back to the states earlier this week and had a meeting with our label, with both parties coming to the verbal agreement of having our debut album turned in to them sometime next month. If we do meet that deadline, the album should reach torrent sites in March or April, meaning it will have an official release date in late April or so.

For this past week we have been spending tireless hours working with Ryan Ross Hernandez in studio. Right now our only goal is to record as much as we can. We may end up having enough material for three records, but we'd much rather have that many songs and then decide on the really great ones to make the album. I don't think, personally, I would feel comfortable recording exactly ten songs to put on an album and be that confident in just those.

I had a conversation the other night with Ryan. In that conversation he told me something along the lines that if we just pleased the ladies with our debut album, we could basically assure ourselves a lifelong career. I'll take it as a joke but if you've ever been to a RRH concert, you know it's probably not a joke. So, that is why our debut album will just feature fourteen mid-to-low tempo ballads and torch songs.

That is sarcasm of course, much due to the fact that we aren't good looking enough to pull it off.

Oh, I almost forgot about the most important piece of news for this update. On Monday, January 16th, 2012, we will be releasing our first single ever. The stepping stone to see whether we have an actual career or not. More news on that should be coming this week on here.

Happy Saturday.

- Caleb

BLOG - Thank You

Thank you.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.

Thank you to everyone who legally downloaded our debut single. And even the ones who didn't, we still love you, although we feel like disappointed parents towards you.

Thank you to all the radio stations that played our song, as well as those individuals who called in and requested it.

We were able to score a Top 5 finish in both the Airplay and Digital Download Charts. Maybe we actually do have a future in this business. Or perhaps this is still an effect of the hype we generated beforehand. Either way, we are over the moon right now.

If you still haven't heard our single, you can give it a listen below.

News about the album will be coming very soon. As well as our second single next month.

Happy Sunday.

- Jason, Gavin, Wilson, Caleb
