Background:

In early summer 2011 Nick Palmer began getting a lot of attention locally in Miami for his punk, hip hop, rap, crunk, metal genre mixing music. He was signed to Studio60 Records by the end of summer. It was announced that his debut album would come out that August. Nick however wasn't ready. He fought with everyone involved whether it was the other musicians or producers. He ended up scrapping the entire album and then moving the whole operation to Los Angeles to start over. Nick got started on the album and then halfway done he decided to just take a break and go on Electrodeath's Wicca Tour.

After going on almost all of the Wicca Tour Nick said that his debut album was "almost done". He re-entered the studio for a couple of weeks. THe first single from the album was "Breakout (Feat. Lily)" and it reached #5 on the digital song chart in it's second week and is still on the chart and possibly could rise higher. The single is reflective that Nick is making an attempt to mix funky electronic dance music with other genres.

"The Mad Scientist" is expected to be genre-bending. "On the old stuff I was working on before there was just too much going on and it wasn't working. On this we sort of went first back to basics and then said 'how can we now make what we have more progressive and amazing'". The result is an album in which every instrument is played by (with the exception of course of Lily's vocals on "Breakout") and every track mixed by either Nick or his brother Grant. "I think people will be quite impressed by everythin", says Nick. "I'm extremely proud of this album".

1. Popular Music Is Dead
Genre: Rap, Dubstep, Post-Hardcore

Uuh. Clear the room
Then clear your mind
New plans coming through
Mad scientist high
Popular music is dead
Praise the folk kid
Praise the metal head

Scream like the horrors from your dreams
Like they're here haunting your music scene
Like you cant escape them or be free
Or the number one disaster's name is me
Lock all the doors
Run for the hills
Rock like a star
Punk like a kid
Run for your life
Get your shotguns
Pop music is dead
Hear the the war drums

Can you hear the words?
It's dead!
Can you hear the noise?
Dead!
Can you hear it?
Can you hear it?

Contagious its spreading
Gunning for your
Safety's off it's ready
The new world order
The unemployed reporter
The www.internet
The whole god damn set
It's feeding this monster
This balance it's breaking
The world is shaking

Popular music is dead
Death to primetime
Death to white blue n red
Yeah pop music is dead
Didn't you hear what I said?

Can you hear the words?
It's dead!
Can you hear the noise?
Dead!
Can you hear it?
Can you hear it?

Dead! Dead! So Dead! Dead!
Get your war drums on!
Pop music is dead!

Can you hear them drums?
It's dead!
Can you hear the noise?
Dead!
Can you hear it?
Can you hear it?

Nick Talks "Popular Music is Dead"
I'm in love with this song slightly more than most the rest of the songs on this album, and I hope you like it. It starts with a little organ synth loaded with reverb and a nice bass drum oriented beat. There is a little bit of random electronica in the background but it is rather distant sounding. Meanwhile I am rapping like I just shot up on a bunch of stimulants or something. You can almost taste the swaggar that was filling the room the night I wrote this song. Then comes the dubstep breakdown for the chorus. The whole whomp whomp thing is kept in beat by a little bit of double pedal action on the drums. The heavy drums mixed with the dubstep are a great platform for me to scream the chorus like I am in a deathmetal band which is exactly what I do. The next verse and chorus are pretty similar. They are just as kickass as the first. Then the dubstep switches up like a blues guitarist who suddenly figured out he can play those same notes just mix up the variation a little bit. Meanwhile the drums stay heavy and I belt out some more lyrics before the last chorus for the song.

Lyrically I don't think you need to be a genius to figure out what I was trying to do. I am trying to kill pop music of course because it is kind of shitty and lame. Not to say that there isn't music categorized as pop that isn't good, just most of it sucks and the stuff that doesn't suck is progressive and epic. That's really all there is to say. Pop music is dead, straight and simple.

Sounds kind of like this, but if this was like what is described above

2. Breakout (Featuring Lily)
Genre: Crunk, Metal
Red - Nick Palmer
Blue - Lily
Green - Both

I used to be part of the in crowd
Now I break hotel windows and start fights
Yeah, start looking at me like I'm too loud
Like I'll never be more than a highschool dropout

Now no more amnesia, no more stars
Just synth, drums, bass and guitars
No more hiding what we think
And no more drinking when we cant

but I just had to breakout
From the law school noose that's been tied for me
Like we ever tried to be a family?
You know you're no better
You know you're no better
You know you're no better than me

Say to dream big don't end up in the mud
but is it my dream wen it's all said and done?
Village fools who die alone on a boat
Are just like booze cruise kids who die of drug overdose

Just the kids lived fast and the fool had a dream
So don't look at me like my life is done
Like my achievements are none
Or like I'm not your son!

So I just had to breakout
From the law school noose that's been tied for me
Like we ever tried to be a family?
You know you're no better
You know you're no better
You know you're no better than me

You're no better than me!

So I just had to breakout
From the law school noose that's been tied for me
Like we ever tried to be a family?
You know you're no better
You know you're no better
You know you're no better than me

Nick Talks "Breakout (Featuring Lily)"
This song starts with very epic sounding electronic chords that fade in as I start to very aggressively not quite rap, but not quite sing the verse. Some nice bass joins in along with a really cool hip hop beat with some clapping and very deep bass drum. I got to play some guitar on this song which is cool. In the verse you can hear it in the background. The notes are pretty high and add some variation to the song. Then for the chorus I broke out the overdrive pedal for the chorus which is more punk rock than anything else. Lily sings in the chorus which is incredible. If I was as good at singing as her then my life would be dramatically different. During the bridge things get a little crazy with guitar. I play a really sweet solo while the drums also get heavy making the bridge basically heavy metal. All the while Lily is showing off her face-melting vocal ability. tHen there is one more chorus and that's the song.

Lyrically this song has two big meanings. One is more personal with me breaking out from my previous life. This song is aimed at my dad who always pushed me to be a lawyer or something. It is about me breaking out into the world I want to be a part of. On a bigger note the song is about everyone breaking out of their shell. The re-occuring theme throughout the album is just to let loose and not be held back by anything. That is what this songis about.

Glamazon: I will praise the lyrics to the first two songs, but I will strongly disagree with pop music being dead. Anyone with an opinion can say that about any genre, and I think this "holier than thou" talk of one genre being better than another is bullshit. Thank you. ;)

3. Take Me to The World
Genre: Rock, Funk, Soul

Take me to the world!
Sign me up for your lively earth
Tell me all about this planet
Like I'm newborn, in this atmosphere

Whooah! Make me more human
Wouldn't you like that?
You adopt it!
Transform it
Then make it whatever you wanted!

Cuz I'm just a life form trying to find my way
The smokes the booze, theyre all therapy
I'm really just tryin to change the world
But in life, I think twice,
So instead I'm falling on the ground
Just for the chance of a quick fix

Whooah! sell me like a circus clown
Wouldn't you like that?
You bought it!
Corrupt it!
Use it however you wanted!

Cuz I'm just a life form trying to find my way
The smokes the booze, theyre all therapy
I'm really just tryin to change the world
But in life, I think twice,
So instead I'm falling on the ground
Just for the chance of a quick fix

Cuz I'm just a life form trying to find my way
The smokes the booze, theyre all therapy
I'm really just tryin to change the world
But in life, I think twice,
So instead I'm falling on the ground
Just for the chance of a quick fix

Nick Talks "Take Me to The World"
This is probably the most funky song on the album. It startes off with this big saxaphone intro which is very sick! I got to play piano on this song which is great. The piano is probably closest to the style of Elton John than anything else. Meanwhile there is some nice simple drums and kind of background powerchords on guitar. I bust out a soulfully sung verse. At this point all you would have heard me do besides short parts in breakout is rap or scream. So the very soulful vocals might surprise some of you. The chorus is one of those stuck in your head at 4 am catchy types, so I apologize for the sleepless nights that you will probably have now. Then there is a really nice piano breakdown right after the first chorus. I love playing piano and got to sort of go insane during this song. Then during the bridge the horns get their turn to whale in what is a very fun song especially to play live. If you don't get it then see me play this song live and you will.

Lyrically this song is about corruption. Someone can be born into a society and not know anything and then they are conditioned to act a certain way because of society. In addition someone could find someone who is vulnerable and manipulate them. Having had problems with alcahol in the past I know that as soon as you're sober you sort of just have to avoid everyone that you know who will just try to bring you bak down. This song is about losing to that corruption and manipulation which is kind of ironic because it is musically the most happy sounding song on the album.

4. Let Go
Genre: Crunk, Hip Hop
Let go!

Make your move, better think fast
Catch and throw, oh throw and catch
The world's a hot potato ready to go
Aint no use in denyin, you better know
Come on now throw your fists in the air
Drive in the wrong lane you dont care
There's a hundred bottles and they're all empty
Get your clothes man, and bro dont fuckin taze me

Hey!
Man you better let go let go
Damn!
Miami PD you gotta let go
Hey!
Goldman Sachs just let go
Damn!
Congress you gotta let go

Oh! Let's do this!

Now the soldiers, the heroes, the unemployed
Aint no one who should tell you what to avoid
THe people on the streets and the indie kid
You're gonna do this like no one did
Take the keys and the gas and get yourself out
Tell it to the dirty motherfuckers all full of doubt
Like they can take your picture or your name
But you wont be their bitch or play their game

Hey!
Man you better let go
Damn!
Miami PD you gotta let go
Hey!
Goldman Sachs just let go
Damn!
Congress you gotta let go

Le-Le-Le-Le-Let
Le-Le-Le-Le-Let Go!

Hey!
Man you better let go
Damn!
Miami PD you gotta let go
Hey!
Goldman Sachs just let go
Damn!
Congress you gotta let go
Nick Talks "Let Go"
The first half of my album is far more tame and contemporary than the second half and this song is no different. It starts out with some sweet squeaking hip hop followed by an awesome funk beat. I shout the song title really loudly and then heartpounding bass and keytar both come in mirroring what eachother are playing which is a really inspiring kickass riff. The guitar is very subtle in this song. It plays some power chords to compliment the bass and keytar but it isn't very loud. Meanwhile I'm busting out some nice rhymes with all of the swaggar I can possibly muster. Haha. The keytar can be heard easily in the chorus while the bass changes things up and plays a different lick to compliment the keytar which absolutely makes this song. THe words "Hey" and "Damn" are basically screamed in the chorus which makes it sound really cool. In the bridge the DJ record spinning thing comes back which is fantastic. They make my voice all high pitched and then make it slow and deep. It makes the song very fun. Overall one of the most fun songs I have on the record.

This song is about the world. The major theme of this song is a bit of a cliche but it is to be whoever you are. The idea of letting go is letting go of presenting any kind of facade to the world that is either false or not fully true. When you become who you truly are you are so much more likely to stand up for what you believe in which is what the second verse is about. When people stand up for what they believe in the world can actually change.
Sounds kind of like

5. Tell Everybody
Genre: Rap, Punk, Classical

From the So-Cal skyscrapers
All the way to Miami beach
Yeah go to LA or Phoenix
All the way to the northeast
You're givin me new haters
With your lies you preach
all about my dirty trick
One big libel feast!

Oh you can tell everybody
Tell them all about me
About how I just play these women
And sip these drinks

Tell everybody!
Tell them how I lie
Tell everybody!
Tell them how they'll cry
You can tell a thousand lies
You'll always be a jealous whore

From the white sand beaches to the rockies
Tell all of America about my games
Bring them the stories, make a powerpoint
Book all the talk shows
Make pamphlets, and kill all the trees
A thousand words can't hide your true aims
Even try to tell the kids smokin the joint
You're so desperate you want anyone to know

Oh you can tell everybody
Tell them all about me
About how I buy expensive gifts
And more expensive booze

Tell everybody!
Tell them how I lie
Tell everybody!
Tell them how they'll cry
You can tell a thousand lies
You'll always be a jealous whore

Oh you can tell everybody
Tell them all about me
About how I'll write her love songs
And rhymes for her friend

Tell everybody!
Tell them how I lie
Tell everybody!
Tell them how they'll cry
You can tell a thousand lies
You'll always be a jealous whore
Nick Talks "Tell Everybody"
I absolutely love this song. It starts with a big dramatic string intro which makes you think it will be some kind of jazzy thing but then the really bassy beat comes in. Meanwhile the violins are still playing this really epic sounding melody. Meanwhile I'm rapping away at the verse like I always do and a piano is playing subtely. Then all the sudden the guitar comes in as I start singing the prechorus. It works in harmony with the violins and the sweet hip hop beat. The chorus is straight up punk rock with a really cool bass line and a nice rock n roll beat while the guitar busts out the power chords. Then the strings break things down with a little fill that goes from really high notes down to where they begin playing that epic melody again as I rap the second verse. THe piano and bass oriented beat join back in also. After the second chorus the guitar goes off on a mosh worthy solo. Meanwhile the violins are playing the same epic melody this time joined by the piano. This all comes to a climax after I sing the last prechorus they all harmonize on a single note before the drums play a nice fill and then comes the last chorus of the song. The violins play more as the song fades out.

Lyrically this song is about a girl. If you didn't get that already then you probably didn't read the lyrics at all. Haha. Back in Miami I knew a girl and we were together for awhile. Then I ended it and she just talked a bunch of shit about me and the kind of guy I was. THis song is basically my response to that and I hope she hears this song so that she can hear my response to everything she did.

OOC: If you are one of this skimmers and you don't read everything then read this song. It is the most important one on the whole album.

6. Amnesia
Genre: Dubstep, Dance, Classical, Metal, Rap

(Italics = Screams)

Aaaah

This is the epiphany
Of all that my mind can see
With hotels and crashing cars
Alcohol smells and seeing stars
This is the journey
Of breakdowns and of me
With sleeping and newscasts
And hoping my life lasts
This is the anarchy
Of my happy family
Where conflicts all turn to dust
With these falling bricks and hidden lust
This is the study
Of how anyone could love me
While I sip on these mixed drinks
Kiss on the lip before my mind sinks
And so finally
The monster inside of me
That controls my every single move
And makes holes that I can't remove
He stands before me
He stands so dangerously
I can fight him to the death
But I can't spite his final breath

Where am I?
Where am I?

Nick Talks "Amnesia"
This song is the most trippy track on the album probably. If you heard a bunch of hype about my songs blowing people's minds then this is probably the song they were talking about. I sweet dance beat starts out. Some violins join in playing a sweet calm melody. Some wind instruments and a quiet deep horn also join in. The melody is calm and tranquil. Mixed with the dance beat it sounds really fantastic. This is the point where some synths join in. First comes the bass which is really fun and the type of thing that makes you want to just get up and dance. At this point I did do some singing, and if you saw me play this song live you'd be able to tell what I was saying but there is some sweet distortion on my voice to make it very alien like. A cool tremolo sound comes in. Meanwhile the violins get a little bit less calm. All of the sudden a little bit of facemelting dubstep aggressively comes in with the nice bass drop and some whomp whomp haha. As this is going on I let out a nice little scream that is still heavily distorted, but this time you don't have to feel left out because I don't even say any words. Now things begin to settle down with just the wobble bass and random ambient noises. This is when I begin to rap what are basically the only lyrics in the song because everything not rapped is either screamed or distorted to the point where they don't really sound like me. As I finish the drum beat kicks in again. THis time it isn't drum machine or anything like that. It is very funky and symbol oriented. Then very heavy guitar starts coming in. As it comes in the drums get much heavier, but then it is fought off by more random ambient and tremolo noises. It is like the relative order of the dance/dubstep section of the song is fighting off the chaos of the much heavier metal. THis happens a few more times. Then all of the sudden everything stops but the guitar as a single power chord is made to ring. THen things pick up. The drums are heavy. The guitar is playing an insane tapping riff. The bass remains a little bit funky and danceable which really makes this part of the song. I scream some lyrics every couple of measures as the guitar goes into an incredible solo courtesy of my brother Grant who is better at guitar than I am. Then the song fades into meaningless noise.

This song is about my breakdown that I had over summer. I'm not sure if you got that from my lyrics. I basically hit rock bottom when I was driving across the country stopped to get drunk and then ended up driving a car across a mountain pass with absolutely no memory of how it had happened. This is the darkest song on the album probably and also the most epic. I absolutely love this song.

Jennifer: This song speaks to me. I know firsthand about breakdowns. :/ Only 3 days left until this album is all mine.

OOC: Real cool stuff dude. I feel like the tracks you've been putting out here are being criminally overlooked, given how much time you clearly poured into this. Keep it up, I'll be reading for sure.
