The camera fades in from black to see a young TV presenter with a microphone standing in London's Oxford Street with a massive crowd of people behind them cheering and screaming. The time is five minutes before 9PM, the time when people were told to assemble here for the second phase of the social media driven PR stunt that has almost everyone in the industry intrigued. The crowd members gaze anxiously upwards, looking for any sign of the masked figures from last night appearing on a shop roof. Would they identify tonight who they are? The presenter has to shout, even with his microphone, to even be heard by the camera."Hello and welcome to this MTV Special live from London's Oxford Street! We're here because the nation's young adults have been gripped by this PR craze, as Twitter has crashed 4 times in the last 24 hours from trending topics such as #SHOUTITOUTLOUD #LEICESTERSUARE and, of course, #OXFORDSTREET. Last night, for those who do not know, a group of masked individuals in hoodies appeared atop a building in Leicester Square, throwing cards to the couple of hundred people who had followed the tweet instructions and gone there to create a flashmob. Well, that number last night was impressive, but tonight there are literally thousands of people here screaming and shouting. The craze has snowballed, and this might just be the biggest flashmob ever seen in history! Now we wait! Will we find out tonight who they were? I bloody hope so because I'm freezing! Anyway, it's one minute to nine...so let's see."The presenter turns towards the direction all the crowd are focused in, and the camera cuts to a view of a large clock situated on one of the stores nearby. It counts up towards 9PM....8:59:56...57...58...59...
The crowd scream at the top of their voices, as instructed, on the very stroke of 9PM. The sound in Oxford Street is deafening. The screaming and waving of mobile phones goes on for around 15 seconds before, all of a sudden, all of the lights in the street go out, one by one, so that only the Christmas lights are illuminated. And then the Christmas lights all go off at the same time. The street is plunged into pure darkness, as the crowd stand in silence, anticipating that this is all part of the stunt.
Just then, a solitary light flashes on in one building, way up high. The camera focuses on the House of Fraser store in the corner, as a window near the top of the department store is the only one lit. As it focuses, four hooded and masked figures stand menacingly in the window, looking down at the crowd below them. The screams from the crowd are electric, and just at that moment, another fgure, much smaller than the rest, but dressed exactly the same, walks up to window with a massive bag held above its head.
Standing still for a second, all five figures from last night survey the screaming crowd, camera flashes illuminating the street below as people struggle for a piece of social media history.
After a minute, two of the figures walk to the side of the window and slide it open longways. The smallest figure walks to the edge of the ledge, and unzips the bag, tipping it out on the street below, its contents flying towards the crowd below, some being carried further afield by the wind.
As they hit the ground, it is clear what they are...CDs. Is this just some band's promo of their new album? Who knows? People fight for the limited number of CDs for a while as everyone wants to hear the mysterious music that these figures are promoting. When the fighting eventually calms, the christmas lights suddenly jar back on. Those who care to look up notice that the only window not now illuminated, was the one where once the figures had stood.... On the CDsThe CD begins with a crackling style noise, like that of a radio with no signal. After a few seconds, a voice comes into focus. A heavily disguised voice, playing very slowly."Thank you all for attending Oxford Street. Your next task is simple and is described in four words. Serpentine. Wednesday. Nine. Scream".The crackling sound returns and plays for another 5 minutes |
