Katie's comments

You guys are probably very used to coming to one of the first listens of a song by Katie and listening to me talk and talk and talk about my newest song, and the meaning behind it, and who it's aimed at, and why it's sung how it is and stuff. Tonight though, I'm going to keep this short. Because for someone, this doesn't need that level of description.

This is the final song from my comeback EP, and the second single from the same. Honest truth time from Katie Coyle; this is the truest, most honest song I've ever written. While sometimes it can take me an age to write lyrics, I sat down with the subject matter playing through my head, and I wrote this song in about 5 or 10 minutes. The music came later, but lyrically, it was so damn simple.

The track, when you hear it, it'll be obvious, is about a girl. This is a real life person, and Katie's real feelings, which is why I opt not to write anymore about the lyrics. She knows, somewhere out there, who she is, and I only hope she gets to hear this song.

Musically, I wrote this on my guitar at first, as I do with all my tracks. It sounded a bit off though. Something just wasn't there, and it sounded a bit too chunky, even with just the most basic acoustic. So I sat at my piano...and the chords just flowed. For real. It felt like all these wonderful feelings were flowing out of me, and I played it all the way through in one go. It feels right to me, and I hope it portrays my emotions. Even if they are very sad, and a little downtrodden. I hope you all get the vibe.

This is without the saddest song I have ever done. It's not got the same depressing message that my early work did. But from my own view it is very very sad, extremely emotional, and most importantly...really true.

Even although this is a very personal track for me, I really hope people enjoy it. Because I love you all, and I love to make music that you guys enjoy.

Track description

The second single from Katie Coyle's comeback EP, My Smiles Don't Matter is a track filled with emotion, sadness, love and torture (not literally). The song portrays Katie's most secret feelings, allowing them to spill out and be heard by everyone she chooses to share her life with.

The track description is very abrupt. The song is possibly the simplest song Katie has ever done as well. It features just Katie and her piano. It is filled from start to finish with an array of slow paced piano chords, interspersed with very slow flourishes of single notes every so often.

Her voice throughout the song is strong yet soft. It sounds loud, but without ever engulfing and overcrowding the music. The voice Katie uses here portrays the strength of how she feels, as well as the power she holds within her as a person, and the way she wants the subject of the song to feel like Katie is with her, and supportive, even if...well the lyrics describe that.

The verses are sung in slow, short bursts, where areas the chorus flows a lot more freely, each line flowing smoothly together, whilst the bridges are sung in elongated singular line fashions, each one having quite an abrupt end.

The track ends with Katie's voice, no piano, sounding echoing, haunting, almost "lonely".

Lyrics

I'm standing here tonight//
And now I look in my reflection//
Stare into my deep brown eyes that shone so bright//
Why do I seek this false direction//

It wasn't your fault that this should be//
And I don't even blame myself//
It's a desire for what just can't be//
It's just my home I call this shelf//

And I wonder why this happened now, how it came to be so strong//
I feel a tear is in sight, I feel a tremble inside, 'cos I know that it's so wrong//

But my smiles don't matter as long you feel warm inside//
Turn a blind eye to my down-turned frown//
I'll try to keep it all, I'll hide//
No my smiles don't mean much, if it seems to make you blue//
I won't say it anymore tonight//
But when I'm alone I think of you//
When the wind comes…let it blow…//

It's been a long time since you knew the truth//
You thought my smile was painted on//
Like a marionette, in the throes of youth//
If you'll be happy I'll be strong//

And I know that it can't be//
I even accept the twist in fate//
But you've made me feel so wonderful//
You have so many golden traits//

And tonight my mood is swinging wide, like a pendulum inside//
If you wanna know the truth, you'd see I've smiled, I've laughed, I've cried//

But my smiles don't matter as long you feel warm inside//
Turn a blind eye to my down-turned frown//
I'll try to keep it all, I'll hide//
No my smiles don't mean much, if it seems to make you blue//
I won't say it anymore tonight//
But when I'm alone I think of you//
When the wind comes…let it blow…//

Go on, move on, you're a butterfly//
Burst out, move on, don't be afraid to fly//
I came, I saw, you with her now//
But if I made you sad I'd cryyyy….//

And if I make you cry I'll go away//
But if you want me to, then I can stay//
Whatever you need, I will come through//
Because the only smile I care about…is one belonging to you//

No my smiles don't matter as long you feel warm inside//
Turn a blind eye to my down-turned frown//
I'll try to keep it all, I'll hide//
No my smiles don't mean much, if it seems to make you blue//
I won't say it anymore tonight//
But when I'm alone I think of you//
When the wind comes…let it blow…//

And you know just how I feel//
Because I never shied away//
I just wanted to say this, it's so real//
This ain't the play within a play…//

No my smiles don't matter as long you feel warm inside//
Turn a blind eye to my down-turned frown//
I'll try to keep it all, I'll hide//
No my smiles don't mean much, if it seems to make you blue//
I won't say it anymore tonight//
But when I'm alone I think of you//

I want you to know…//
When the wind comes…let…it…blow//

Ryan: You were right calling this your most sad song to date. Everything about is, the lyrics, the music, your singing on it, everything you hear gives it that vibe of gut-wrenching sadness. I enjoy the simplicity of it, because I'm always saying simplicity is not stupidity, and this song is a prime example of that. I wouldn't want to be the girl you wrote this about right now though.

Nadia: You've got me wondering who this is about now! Simplicity is always the best with the more emotional songs, because I think when it's cluttered on the production side of things, it just takes away from it, so this is just perfect. Really amazing lyrics, sweetie! Your best song to date? I think so. :)
