Running Changes - THE SHORT FILM Plot Summary / Trailer Short synopsis: Ryan and his live-in girlfriend Stephanie appear to be enjoying the perfect relationship: Ryan purchases an engagement ring for her pregnant prior to the opening of the film, seemingly ready to purpose to her. Having been a couple for two years, Stephanie wants to get married and start a family. Ryan on the other hand, has fears of being trapped and scared. He is worried of life and youth being over. At the wedding of his best friend, he meets a free-spirited, recently turned 21 year-old, Lydia, who opens his eyes and leads him on a dangerous path away from Stephanie. Trailer:
Ryan is shown walking on the Brooklyn Bridge, late at night, with a pensive look. His voice is heard narrating.
Since I was fifteen, I never pictured myself following the norm. Going to college, getting a job, meeting the girl, getting married, having kids. I had no desire for any of that twenty years ago, and I still don't now. I would picture what it would be like in my thirties and this is exactly what I saw; great friends.
We see Ryan and a group of friends sitting side-by-side beside a runway show, as models are passing by in skimpy designer swimsuits.
Ryan: Why we are at the New York Fashion Week for my birthday? None of us are members of Scissor Sisters.
Josh: Well we know you don't like strip clubs, so just imagine these models as high-end strippers.
Christopher: Except they probably won't take their clothes off in front of us.
As he says that, an attractive, young blonde model walks by them, giving Ryan a playful wink.
Ryan: [smiles] You know, this wasn't such a bad idea.
Josh: You're gonna sleep with her, aren't you?
Ryan: I only sleep with my girlfriend. Now if I were to fuck this model like if she were someone else, that's not cheating.
Josh: So she's just gonna blow you?
A beautiful girlfriend.
Ryan and his girlfriend are seen on a couch together, her legs draped over his, drinking a glass of wine.
Stephanie: I just wanna know what you're feeling because you're a tough guy to read.
Ryan: Tell you what, for your birthday, I'll get you a copy of my new album, then you'll know everything I'm feeling.
Stephanie: [laughs] You're such an asshole.
Ryan: [chuckles] Shut up.
She moves to sit on top of him as they embrace in a kiss.
Also, in that fantasy I was a famous musician who sold out Madison Square Garden.
A shot over the sold out crowd at MSG is shown, with Ryan playing a concert.
Ryan: New York City!
The crowd cheers loudly, the camera showing him with a sly smile.
Oh wait, that also did happen.
Ryan is with an acoustic guitar around his back, beginning to play "The Art of Getting By."
Tonight, I need sometime on my own To be just me in my home alone I got a pocketful of California green So no ones gonna tell me no
Ryan's girlfriend is seen sleeping on his chest, snuggling next to his body.
Steph and I have been dating for two years. She's smart, she's beautiful, she's hardworking, she makes me laugh. I guess if I absolutely have to become an adult and get married and all the other crap that comes with it, this is the woman I would want to do it with... right?
At a wedding scene, Ryan is sitting around with the same male friends we saw earlier, he strikes eyes with a pretty brunette at another table.
You see, when your young, no one lets you know that there are people that could come into your life and flip it upside down, be it for good or bad.
Ryan and the young woman are then shown together by the bar at the wedding.
Lydia: What are you drinking today?
He turns his head to see her, flashing her a small smile.
Ryan: Have we met before? You remind me of someone.
Lydia: I'm Lydia.
They're seen shaking hands, smiling at each other. We then jump to see the two sitting together side by side on the ground, next to a lake. The wedding reception can be seen going on at their backdrop.
Lydia: What are you thinking about?
Ryan: That everything in my life seems pretty planned out. Nothing surprises or excites me anymore.
Stephanie is seen leaning against the bathroom door, wearing a nightgown, as Ryan brushes his teeth.
Stephanie: Don't you want to get married someday?
Ryan: Steph, we've been over this topic before. I find marriage pointless.
The scene jumps back to him and Lydia at the wedding.
Lydia: That sounds pretty boring.
Ryan: I know. [they both laugh]
In a later scene, Ryan and his girlfriend are shown in the living room, Stephanie with tears in her eyes.
Stephanie: I need you to give me something for this relationship not to seem pointless.
Ryan is shown at the bachelor party for his friend, their seen having a beer as loud music plays in the background.
Christopher: Stephanie is perfect. She's beautiful, your family loves her, your friends love her.
Ryan: Well... what if she's just not perfect for me?
We're shown a split screen shot of both Stephanie and Lydia smiling, with Ryan's narrating again.
We all makes choices. It doesn't matter whether their the right ones or not. We have to see them through and deal with the aftermath.
Back to the previous scene with Ryan having a conversation with his friend.
Ryan: I just don't want to be married to Stephanie, and wondering, "What if? Why didn't I take a risk?"
Ryan and Lydia are shown again together, at the same scene by the lake.
Lydia: Life is simple. I don't understand why people want to bring so much pressure upon themselves. I think a lot of problems people have, they bring upon themselves.
Ryan: Who are you? [chuckles]
Ryan is again seen in a concert, playing guitar with his backing band. "Smoke in My Eyes," a song off of the Running Changes album is heard playing in the background until the end of the trailer.
I have a pain in my throat That's burning up my voice Riding on an open highway in the desert The rain is coming down and flooding the roads Finally I can feel the breath in your body I'm keeping up running til' I see the sun rise behind your back
We all grow up. We all face doubts and decisions.
Ryan is in his apartment, smashing an acoustic guitar to piece, hitting it against the floor and walls.
Ryan: What are you doing?! What the fuck am I doing?!
As the trailer started, we again see Ryan walking along the Brooklyn Bridge in the early mornings, with the highway mostly empty except for a few speeding cars. This time he is seen smoking what is seen as being marijuana.
Staying inside another night by this fire Stay up until the bottles of wine are running on empty If this fire fades out, we'll pour some alcohol and start it up again When you're running away, no, you don't look back I'm a lost soul trying to find What's this thing in my life that gives me strength To march on and fight for more than I
Saying you love somebody means nothing. It doesn't mean anything, anyone can say they love somebody. Feelings only matter to the one who experiences them. Now what you do for the people you say you love, that is what matters.
