Hyde Park - London - 28/12/11 - 8:57PM


After the PR stunts so far on this run, be it the cards thrown to a few hundred from the rooftops in Leicester Square, or the teasers dropped from the windows of a department store in Oxford Street onto a few thousand, there is no doubt that this social media crusade from whoever is orchestrating it has been an unmitigated success for both themselves and the might of social media and the digitally aware generation Y.

However, even with that in mind, few could imagine the scene which is now a reality in Hyde Park in London tonight. The masses have again been informed by Twitter of a location and a time. But with two searches so far having proved fruitless for those looking for answers, why would anyone come? Would anyone come? Well that question can be answered with the simplest of glances across the park.

Along the edge of the Serpentine, the river/lake that flows through the park, is a barrier. One can't help but feel that this has now grown to the extent that security measures need to betaken to protect both whoever is behind it and those too curious to stay home. Behind that shiny metal barrier, a crowd has gathered, facing the water expectantly. The very definition of a flashmob has now been totally obliterated though. Many of these people have been here since midday, clamouring to get a spot at the front, in the somewhat vain hope that they might be able to gain an extra clue as to what is going on.

As it gets dark, and the cold of a winter night in London begins to draw in, chilling those in attendance to the bone, foot stamping and chanting begins. Chants of "PR PR PR PR!" rip through the night sky, accompanied by the thumping feet of thousands who are now squashed somewhat precariously between the perimeter of the park and the edge of the water where the barrier stands. Passers by look on with cautious curiousity, eager to know what has caused so many people to gather at this side of the park...nothing ever happens at this side of the park...

The time now is 8:58PM. Everyone had been told to assemble for 9PM...and the vast majority of the crowd had arrived long before. As the moments tick slowly away, the crowd appears to become slightly agitated. Those in attendance chatter excitedly, almost as if they expect an answer tonight. The fervent chatter carries across the park, creating an eerie sort of noise elsewhere, for the many dog walkers and lovers strolling aimlessly in other areas of the vast green space, blissfully unaware of what is going on over this side.

The clock ticks onto 8:59, ands people nudge each other and point, as a 60 second countdown is projected onto the outside of the small stone footbridge over the water. As it ticks down agonisingly slowly, some people join in. Eventually, as the timer reaches ten, the vast majority of the crowd join in enthusiastically.

10.....9...........8.......7...........6.........5........4.........3........2.........1.......0

At the exact stroke of 9PM, just as on the previous two occasions, the crowd lets out a raucous roar which echoes in all four corners of the park. Simultaneously, they also wave their mobile phones from side to side with a real vigour, no doubt showcasing the extent to which social media and the digital age has been vital in this large scale PR stunt.

And then...all of a sudden, from under the bridge, a boat floats slowly into view. Those behind the barrier cheer as if Jesus himself has just come into view, as the five hooded figures stand atop the small boat, their backs turned to the bank where their now captive audience stands. As the cheering and chanting gets louder and more frantic, and the boat reaches where the crowd is situated, the figures slowly turn, one after the other. Their faces are still obscured by the bandanas they have tied tightly just below their eyes. Their hoods are pulled forward so that barely an inch exists between the two. Just enough to see through.

Nevertheless, this is without a doubt the best look anyone has had at the group yet. They stand now just 20 feet from the crowd, unmoving...emotionless. All of a sudden, the smallest figure, clearly the ringleader, walks to the edge of the boat ands picks up a sports bag. It walks back to the middle of the group and unzips the bag.

Each of the group reaches into the bag, and within seconds they are launching small objects to those on the bank, causing a frantic scramble. Still, many cannot take their eyes off the 5 figures as they slowly float across the water.

Eventually, as the bag empties, the five figures calmly step off the boat and walk away without any emotion on the other bank of the river, again disappearing as quickly as they arrived. The miffed crowd look down at their hands...USB sticks...flash drives...but what is on them?




On the flash drives


The flash drives each contain two files, which are encrypted as to be opened in a certain order only. The first is called "WhenISeeYouCry.wma"...a double click on that file brings up a Windows Media Player window with the words WHENISEEYOUCRY splashed across it. After 30 (unskippable) seconds of silence, a chugging guitar riff comes in. The riff is accompanied by some heavy hi-hat and bass drum, and sounds cheery, happy and bubbly, but with an attitude.

After a while, a female voice comes in, pop-punky in tone, replacing the chunky riff..

Every time, it's getting hard to see//
What you wanted, you flashed and flaunted//
Did you want my heart to bleed?//
You lied right to my face, but boy you got no direction//
You wanna see me cry, is that a tear in my eye//
Are you looking at me or your own fuckin' reflection?//

The last word "Reflection" vibrates and echoes a few times, while the music in the background goes silent. After a second gap, a single drum beat comes in at the same time as the vocal restarts, along with the music, this time slower, smoother and a little less happy, but still bubbly.

But I won't cry, because I've seen it a thousand times//
You try to bribe me with your tears//
It's all a ploy, to mess with my mind inside//
I won't snap no more, I'm fighting my own fears//
That you would leave me, was always what I would dread//
But now I lost it and sometimes I wish you were dead//
Because every time I see you cry//
I wanna laugh, I wanna smile, I wanna see you die//


At that point, the song goes silent again. Another 30 seconds of silence for those listening to sit through, remembering and analysing the unattributed sample of the track.

File 2 is called "Next.txt". Clicking the file brings up a wordpad document which simply says...."All revealed...London Koko, 30/12/11...9PM"
