PANIC!

Origin: Nashville, Tennessee, USA
Genres: Alternative rock, pop punk
Years active: 2004–present
Labels: Chaos Records

Biography

PANIC! is an American rock band from Nashville, Tennessee, formed in 2004. The band currently consists of lead vocalist and songwriter Ashley Perry, and composer, and multi-instrumentalist Gabriel Hunter. The was originally founded by Ashley Perry, Nick Asher as bassist, and Josh and Joey Fallon at lead guitar and drums, respectively. Gabriel Hunter and Ryan Ross Hernandez joined the band in 2005 just before hey were scheduled to enter the studio to record their debut album. Hunter joined as rhythm guitarist and Hernandez took lead guitarist duties from Josh Fallon, moving the latter to third guitar.

Perry and the Fallon brothers met at a private school in Franklin, Tennessee, agreeing to create the band just in matter of weeks from meeting each other. Before they had coined a name for the group, Nick Asher joined as the bassist. Asher was Ashley Perry's neighbor at the time. The band was very young at the time of forming the band, Perry was sixteen while Joey Fallon, the youngest member, was just fourteen. When Asher showed up, he was stunned to find out the drummer was only fourteen. He admitted "I had very, very, very, little faith in everyone in the band because of their age. I remember thinking, 'This is not going to work because this kid is way too young,' but that first day of practice was amazing. I knew we were on to something."

Ryan Ross Hernandez was originally signed to a record label as a solo artist in 2003. Hernandez was introduced to Ashley Perry by the label's A&R department in 2004. The original plan of the label was to create a duet project between Perry and Hernandez, with the rest of the band serving just as a backing band. When Hernandez joined the band, the rest of PANIC! saw it as both a move forced onto them by the label as well as a bad move due to Hernandez's trained skills as a blues and acoustic guitarist, but not rock disciplined. Hernandez reportedly wowed the members with the guitar tunes he could hit. In April 2005, after a small private performance for label executives at a concert hall, the band was signed.

During the first album, Ashley Perry served as the band's lead vocalist and primary lyricist, while Ryan Ross Hernandez was the primary composer and lead guitarist. PANIC! broke out of the music scene and reached mainstream success with their second studio album, Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner. Released in 2007 as the follow-up to their 2005 effort We Are the Directors of This Dramatic Love Story, the album won several awards and achieved quadruple platinum status after selling more than 4.1 million albums in the United States. It was a critical success as well, many acclaiming the vocals and joint writing of Perry and Hernandez. The album spawned two top ten hits: the double platinum certified lead single "I Liked You a Lot Better Before You Became a Fucking MySpace Whore" which reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and the platinum "Force Our Smiles, Baby, Half Dead". The group headlined tours around the world in 2007 and 2008 to support their record.

In November 2007, Hernandez announced his departure from the band to focus on his solo career. This brought Gabriel Hunter up to lead guitarist and Josh Fallon to rhythm.

In 2009, PANIC! released their follow-up album, Broken Down on Memory Lane, to major chart success, debuting at number one in seven countries and selling 560,000 copies in its first week in the US, with top five chartings worldwide. Broken Down on Memory Lane contained the hits "Disloyal Order of the Ignorant" and "There's Only One Exception When It Comes to Love".

After a two year hiatus and another three members departures, PANIC! returned this past July and released "Happiness Is Something You Need," serving as their one-off, comeback single. In an interview with MTV, Ashley Perry said that despite the band losing three of its founding members, they will be releasing new music in 2011, hinting likely to an EP release and a full-length coming in 2012. The singer also admitted that PANIC! style was likely to change with now her and Hunter at the forefront, but clarified that the band would still retain their signature sound.

Blog: Yes, We Are Still Alive

Are you still with us? Did we not lose you all to Riot! in the Boulevard?

It's been a long time hasn't it? It's been six months since we've announced our comeback and five months we've released a song. Well we've been busy. We spent nearly four months touring, first as a main supporting act for Ryan Ross Hernandez, then most recently we just came off of being a guest act on GirlSpice's North American leg of their world tour. We greatly thank both acts for still believing in us and letting us tour with them. (We also appreciate the cover the lovely ladies from GirlSpice of our song "Happiness Is Something You Need.")

We are currently taking a little downtime to spend time with our families and friends for the holidays, but very likely the first or second week of the new year, we will be back in the studio working very hard in the studio. We are currently aiming for a late-Spring or Summer release for our fourth studio album.

We do have a nice batch of songs that we recorded this past Summer during the sessions in which we recorded the song you've heard, Happiness Is Something You Need. We are currently debating about giving us guys those songs in the form of an EP or something, some time before we release the full-length.

As sorta our Christmas gift to everyone who has stuck around with us, here are some lyric previews to a few songs we've written. Some have a history that dates back and others are more recent tunes we wrote during our touring period.

Stay safe. We love you all.

- Ashley and Hunter

Lyric Previews

Chaos Records' Legal Department Told Us the Title of This Song Was Too Explicit to Release As a Single, So We Now Gave It an Obnoxiously Long Title to Piss Them Off (A Song for Our Hometown)

Since the hiatus I've become addicted to eating Cheerios and drinking beer
And for the record, I hate the taste of beer, I just think it makes cereal taste better
We're still kids at heart who go to the local bowling alley at midnight
I don't need any maps because I know this town better than I know myself

I wrote "Broken Down on Memory Lane," alone in my basement
In LA we would piss off all the neighbors in Hunter's apartment building
At least it's better than when we stayed in hotel rooms side-by-side
I barely slept when I heard Ryan having groupie sex next door
This city's the country music capital but,
They've seen much worse than us,
Than some fucking pop-punk band,
Even if we lost our title to some band from Vegas

My fears of us wasting away were correct,
We all slept in while touring and talked shit in restaurants after shows,
I was better before the break but I'm feeling just fine,
At least I'm not as sad as I use to be
I've now just gone naked on paper

These Bones Will Forever Live in the Deep South

I was born and bred in the deep south
Nashville was raised on handsome mouth's
I was born in December of '88
Came up in a Christian household
I should get a cross tattoo on my thigh

The day I die, I don't want any funeral
There's not a goddamn dime you need to spend,
Just put me in the ground to rot and decompose
As long as I am in your heart always, that's all that matters,
Scatter all my belongs to the deserving ones who really need them
'Cause all that I am
All that I was is...

So go and carry my body
Bring me to the deep south
Somewhere they can come alive again
I give up New York, and always take Tennessee
Here's in the deep south

I can grow old or die young
Doesn't matter as long as my last days are spent here
Here in the deep south
The somewhere I belong
'Cause I was born in the deep south

The Critics Say the Only Top 40 Act That Talks About Fame As Much As We Do Are Rappers

I need you to say Riot! and PANIC! in the same breath
I dare you to lie and tell me they remind you of the same band
See I talked to God, woah
You see sometimes I travel to heaven,
So he told me to buy a gun and call this a "Hostile Takeover"
"Until they call you 'the poster kids of pop-punk,' again, don't stop shooting
Better yet aim higher and go for 'best band in the world'"

You're all junkies
And we are the chemists
Our label are the suppliers
And digital outlets are the dealers

Before you know it you'll be on the bandwagon again
You'll be taking one or two for the team,
You all know what I mean

Oh I'm so sorry, no, expect I'm totally not
Call in to your radio station,
And tell them you want to hear this song,
From those has-beens out of Nashville and Chicago

A Mental Breakdown on New Years Eve

Well I've spent the last two years on a ledge in my head
This isn't an anthem for all the dark clothes wearing teen girls, who swear My Chemical Romance is the best band in the world
Nor this is a song to play at a hipster party while they all wear jean shorts and drink Pabst Blue Ribbon beer
This is a story of spending sleepless nights under dirty sheets
While an ex-bandmate keeps putting off getting all of his shit out of our tour bus
Hunter and I are thinking of starting a bonfire with it

And everyone left
They are nowhere and I'm still feeling like a nothing
And I'll spend my time consuming vitamin water
While listening to the shitty music playing on the radio

I finally had a mental breakdown on New Years Eve
In an New York City club bathroom while my friends drank heavily into the night
I still have yet to catch any sleep this week, my vocal chords ache
The nightmares keep getting worse each and every day
I've lost a little part of me that week

Nadia: These lyrics are pretty much the reason GirlSpice were more than happy to have you both on tour, the lyrics are funny, down-to-earth and well thought out, I can't praise you enough. Cannot wait for the new album!

Blog: All Caps and an Exclamation Mark

Last night I had a business meeting in Lower Manhattan. A business meeting at two in the morning. I got reacquainted with some old friends and acquainted with some new ones. Open those brand new calenders for the new year, and put an exclamation mark on January 1st, 2012. Some massive news coming January 1st. You can call the new year, the year of the PANIC! We are coming back in a big way.

NEWS: It's the Start of a New Year

We promised you big news. Call us whatever you want to call us but we wanted to be the first big story in the music industry this new year. Our round-up of 2011 is pretty simple, we returned to the scene, we released a single, and we toured with Ryan Ross Hernandez and GirlSpice this past fall. All things considered we stayed pretty quiet this past year, but 2012 we see as a year that is career-defining for this band. This year we will release our long-awaited comeback album, the first since we've returned from our hiatus, the first album we make with a smaller line-up and our first record in three years.

We don't have a projected release date for our fourth studio album just yet. In the past six to seven months we've written many songs as well as recorded a lot of demos, which we will use as references when we enter the studio in about two weeks for our first recording sessions aiming towards the album. This is however, not the massive news we promised you to bring today. Anyone who follows us closely already knows all of this.

If you want to know the massive news, check out the video below.

Nadia: This is huuuuge news and I'm ecstatic for Ryan to be back with PANIC!, even if it's for just one album, I already know it's gonna be amazing. Me and the rest of GirlSpice loved having PANIC! on tour with us and we wish them all the best of luck with everything that's coming. Boots also apologises for disturbing your announcement. But hey, at least she made you blurt it out quicker! Boots will now officially be regarded as the wonder dog amongst PANIC! fans. ;)

Nate: Fucking Sellouts! Kidding. Will be great to see you all back together, RRH adds a certain factor no other musician in the world is cable of producing. I, for one am a huge fan of the single you released, and the snippets you released also we're pretty bad ass. Your little light=hearted humor with your girl-friendy, wife-person reminds me on one of my favorite tv show characters. Quote, "Women, god i hate em'" - Randy Marsh.

We have made it to the studio and we're exploring the oddest influences each of us have and mixing them together. It can only get stranger from here when Ryan joins us and brings his current folk/country influences.

This will be a long process. We currently have studio time booked in various studios in Nashville, Los Angeles, New York City, and London, for the next six to seven months. We'll bring you a lot of goodies along the way, before we reach the main entree.

By main entree, we mean our 4th studio album. You will have a new PANIC! album when the leaves start to change colors again, in September.

That is all. You can all go back to watching that film that John Cusack was in.
