The rest of Outlaw in its entirety.

5. Me and My Uncle

This Grateful Dead tune just really fit the tone of cowboy and outlaw songs that we were going with for this album. It's a great song that has all the elements of a good story about cowboys. Poker, gold, a bar room fight, theft, and deception. What more could you ask for?

6. All That Glitters

It ended up sounding musically like Senor (Tales of Yankee Power) which is a Bob Dylan tune from Street Legal which has been covered quite a few times. But the story is completely different. We kind of went with a continuation of the Grateful Dead song. You can kill a man and take his gold. But then you can try to escape your guilty conscience all you want. Solace is hard to find when you're trying to drink it away or find it with a woman of ill repute. So he can't live what what he had done. He takes the gold he stole and buries it where he had stole it so many years ago.

7. I Used To Love Her

A simple acoustic ballad that follows the standard tale of good love gone wrong. A man finds out that the woman he loves has been unfaithful to him. On more than one occasion even. After finding this out from a friend he decides to take her for a little stroll down to the river. That's where he kills her and mournfully throws her body into the water. Then watches it sink to the bottom. This kind of song has been done many times before. But I'll be honest I never get tired of hearing about a song that contains a jilted lover. Be it a man or woman.

8. Mistaken Ballad

Couldn't honestly think of a title so we latched on to this at the last minute. Similar circumstances of a jilted lover that finds out his woman's cheating through a friend. In a drunken rage one night he murders her and the man she was seeing. Only to find out that she was completely innocent the entire time. A nice little twist on the familiar. Throwing in that little twist ending was a good way to round out a well written song.

9. Tumbling Tumbleweeds/Outro

Now you may wonder where you've heard this one before. This is played at the beginning of The Big Lebowski for starters and is by an old troubadour group known as the The Sons of The Pioneers who had Roy Rogers as one of their founding members. We messed around with static and radio feedback samples again to give it that old timey feel of dial radios from way back. However we did all of this acapella and chose not to instrumentalize it. It fades into the outro seamlessly which is basically just more play with ambient noise that is mostly static and us fooling around with our instruments. Gives that nice eerie feel of wondering what you heard was all just a radio broadcast.

Johnny discusses his plans to release a couple more solo albums. Exploring his musical chops once with something completely different.

I enjoyed doing this first album greatly because it allowed me to do some things that were different and express my love for things all things macabre with a cowboy twist. Because I also do have a love for the outlaws mostly. It grew on me from that childhood idea when cowboys and outlaws were cool. I think the next two albums are going to be on the more folky americana side with some alternative twist in it. No less folky but having way more electric involved. I plan on doing two more albums before getting the kids back together. Working with my other band Southland on this solo endeavor has been nothing short of enjoyable though. I plan keeping the project together as a side thing later on. You fans that have been waiting for a reuniting of TMK as it were will only have to wait until after two more solo joints. Then we'll be back tearing it up again.

Though once again name changes have been discussed. We're stil not sure if we've outgrown the moniker that we've given ourselves yet. But Nobody's Darlings and Subterfuge have been considered greatly. They were on the list at the beginning before TMK came out of nowhere and we decided to stick with it. There is a reason we wanted to call ourselves Subterfuge from the beginning just because we considered our sound a clever ruse. You didn't get what you expected with us because of the way we looked and we always had that ability to crank out something that nobody saw coming. So it also seemed a fitting name. Seeing as we don't consider ourselves genre specific.

But rest assured and sleep well at night people. Your favorite band will be back with a vengeance soon.

Johnny releases the name of the new album that he has already picked out. He also talks about crashing a certain tv show and playing a few secret shows for the smaller clubs.

Been sitting around and thinking about what to call the new album before we sit down to start making music for it again. We're going to call it aptly, "Shut Up, And Play That Guitar!" Going to bust out the electric guitar and tear up some alt. country, some progressive alt folky stuff, and some other fun stuff. So I think it's going to be a fun album. Grandaddy McDougal plans to make an appearence on the album as well. It's going to be a good one.

In my spare time when I get to watch a little tv. I see a few shows I like Walking Dead, Myth Busters, Big Bang Theory, Adult Swim, and that kinda stuff. But this new Celebrity Big Brother has been catching my eye. I regret not signing up for it because it is for charity. I wanted to focus on my music and not be distracted with something else. However I figure I can still contribute by crashing the place. Maybe pull a Beatles and play on the roof of the place with the TMK boys for a little surprise visit. We've cleverly hidden how to get into this shindig and donate cash that we will give to charity ourselves. The way we did this was in the radio static pieces of Outlaw, just required a little sound manipulating and a good ear. Pretty smart huh? We may show up here in the next week or so. If we get arrested please post our bail!

Along with secret shows I've discretely booked a few small club shows with my solo band. Because I like the more close up and intimate setting the smaller clubs give. You get to interact with the fans more and have yourself a better time than you would in a big hall, arena, or ampitheater show. It's those kind of shows that are a sharp nod to our bar room, legion, and fire hall roots when were starting out. It's those kind of shows that I appreciate the most really. I'll keep you posted on dates when I feel like releasing them to the public. Get those general admission tickets while you still can if you're a member of the fan club or what not.

From Johnny's Blog:

We're gonna be playing mostly smaller clubs and bars for this little tri-state tour starting and ending in my home state. The next tour however will probably be a big east coast tour. The next being the mid-west and southern states after that. Trying to ease into touring again a little at a time before taking off on another big long one. Being that one of our members has a child we're doing more regional tours of this kind to benefit his wife and child. We are one of those bands that looks out for each other and family is important to us. However, we're looking for two acts to take with us on this little shindig. Only thing on your application needs to be a good personality, you can melt faces with rocking, and not being a dick. So come on and hang with us! Did I mention TMK was getting back together to come along for the ride?

AP

Alternative Press recently sat down with Johnny McDougal for a rather in depth interview concerning his solo career, reuniting his old band, and being so popular while still under the radar.

AP: Thanks for sitting down with us Johnny. Gotta admit your home and studio are beautiful.

Thanks! It was a real labor of love and it's nice to be able to record at home. You really put out great work when you're in a relaxed and comfortable place you know? It makes the music come out more easier and seems less forced.

AP: That's very true. So a lot of fans thought TMK was breaking up for good when you announced a hiatus and going solo. What are the real reasons behind all of this?

I'd say we were all just kind of tired and needed to rest. Joe's wife having a child made things a bit more complicated because he wanted to be around you know. He wasn't there for the birth of his son. That's really hard you know? So tensions were running high again because we were wanting to tour. But a lot of the guys wanted to stay with they're family and have some time with the people they love. As a band that grew up together we respect each other's needs and find family very important. It keeps us grounded. So we decided mutually to take a break and I'd get some guys together then go solo for a while. Southland emerged from that. Some old friends, a new friend, and a family member that formed an awesome band. They're a great group of guys and I still enjoy playing with them. Recording is a blast as well. This is definitely going to be a permanent staple side project once TMK gets rolling again.

AP: You really went in a different direction with Southland. Very light alternative and then just some straight folk with a darker twist. Do you think it benefitted you to spread yourself out a bit more musically?

It definitely gave me more room to explore and not feel confined. TMK is a band where the songs are a mutual effort. If one guy doesn't like something we'll work at it together to get the feel and tone that we want. But that's what a band does. It's a group effort and I'm not angry at all that some of my ideas didn't fit well. That's just how it is. The group band effort means compromise. So it makes us work like a well oiled rock and rolling machine. Joe and I are starting to find more common ground writing together though. So the new sound is a beautiful piece of art that we all found just fit. Doesn't mean the older stuff is going to come back. It will. We just feel the need to constantly evolve until we find that perfect fit. Southland is just a different type of band. It has more of the music and sound that I want with a bunch of great guys that are happy working with me. No hard feelings that I want to be up front and drive the music. We all have an understanding of each other and I make sure each guy in my solo group gets his fair share of time on stage as well as in recording. They all just work with me on what I'm doing and help me to make it better. It's been a good time and a hell of an experience for me.

AP: So you're going on tour again. Bringing TMK and Atomic War Bride on a solo/group tour. Anything to expect and thoughts?

The Outlaw Tour. Oh hell yeah. We'd been talking about getting back together soon and thought it would be a good idea to have a tour run. So we could get the gears oiled up and going again. I'm taking my solo group Southland along to promote Outlaw as well. We're going to have a nice mix of a little bit of everything. Erich Hess is a hell of a guy and we're on the same wave length musically. Having him along means we'll be seeing some damn good rockabilly tunes. I've been brushing up on my Flat Duo Jets along with Buddy Holly so I can drag Erich's ass on stage and bust a few of those tunes out. I want one more act and if I had to pick. It'd be Jason Smith. Just Jason by himself with an acoustic guitar is a sight to behold. I'd love him to just come along acoustically and have him sit in for a few tunes. This tour should be a blast. I'm bring my Grandaddy along as well. He's got "itchy feet" as he calls it when he wants to go on the road. He loved touring with me last time and it was just awesome. I also think TMK will announce their name change at the end of this tour as well. TMK just kind of named us by accident. We stuck with it forever and just feel it's time for a change.

AP: Sounds like it should be a good line up! You're Grandfather is an unsung legend. You have an immense popularity and are yet still comfortably under the radar. No awards to speak of or any accolades. Yet you don't complain. But are there mainstream artists out there that you like just out of curiosity?

It was never about the awards. Fame is relative to everybody. What it was about is the music and the love of playing it. We sell records to those who want to hear, enjoy, and respect us as artists. That's all I need to be happy. I don't care if we ever break the ceiling and go mainstream. I'm happy playing music and touring. I love being where we're at. Because fame is fleeting. Call it what you will. It is what it is to us.

As far as mainstream artists. Jason Smith of course will always top the list, Julia Volkova blew my mind recently with her performance on tv, Cassie Summers, that blonde chick that sings the country tunes whose name escapes me at the moment, and Lily Abbot of course. The girl has the voice of an angel.

AP: It's always a pleasure sitting down and talking with you. Thanks for your time and we can't wait to see you on tour!

I've always been a fan of Alternative Press. Thanks for coming and talking to me. I can't wait to go on tour as well! We'll keep rocking until the walls cave in!

erich: thank you kindly,mr johnny. i' dusting off the old twin reverbs and gassing up the caddy as we speak.

karoliena: a tour bus would make a lot more sense, rather than a near century old car towing a trailer full of equipment.

erich: yeah, but does a bus or van have the...presence of a vintage cadillac? no.

karoliena: the van would smell better though...

It had been quite a while since we've seen or heard from Johnny McDougal after his huge surprise performance at TA this year which blew the audience away. We were able to track him down by taking the long drive through West Virginia to his home and recording studio nestled in the hills among some beautiful scenery. As soon as I walked in I could hear some gritty slide guitar mixed with some traditional folk instruments like banjo and mandolin. I stood in the booth watching him do his work and making some beautiful noise with his solo project before he caught sight of me. He gave me a small smile and nod holding up a finger to let me know he'd be a minute before he finished. Then he stepped out of the booth wearing a backwards trucker hat, a misfits shirt, some worn out jeans, and chuck taylors. He looked like a mix of redneck and punk rock with the clothes he was wearing. Then he took off his hat and shook my hand walking me through his studio giving me a small tour before heading upstairs to his back yard. He looked off into the expanse of his back yard where I could hear the whisper of falling water that was rather tranquil and relaxing to listen to. Then he lit up a cigarette and took a drag while he sat down. After he pulled me up a seat he smiled and nodded once more.

Johnny: Ready to get this thing off the ground?

He laughed and leaned back in his chair throwing his legs up on the table getting himself comfortable as he addressed me. I'm their ghost writer and interviewer who has been a close friend of Johnny's for a long long time. Sometimes it's surreal to see how far he's come. Johnny's told me many times he'd rather me conduct their interviews and reviews than Rolling Stone any day. Which is kind of flattering. Though they seem more receptive to Alternative Press.

GW: Yeah man as always. Good too see you. You've been hiding out for a while after that huge surprise performance at TA that nobody saw coming. What's the story?

Johnny: Oh man. That was something even we didn't suspect. A lot of artists ended up cancelling at the last minute and they needed people bad. So we decided to show up and blow up the stage at the very last minute. People had been waiting for us to come back for a while. We decided to do it in style. Though following Electrodeath was pretty difficult. But the response was amazing and I loved every minute of it.

GW: You guys haven't missed a beat. You played some new stuff and old stuff as well. Your sound seems to have changed a bit and you're taking in a different direction. Especially with that first song you played. Who you dedicated to somebody you have fond feelings for. But besides that it does seem that the band is trying something different.

Johnny: Yeah I'll be honest and straight with you. That song was for Lily Abbot. I am pretty fond of her. We never really got a chance to really take things any where. Touring schedules and things got in the way of it. But that's life. I won't lie and sit here saying I still don't have feelings for her. I do. As for the band well yeah we're wanting to try to have a more fuller sound I guess you could say. That's more of an alternative country punk kind of think that's a whole lot of rock n' roll as well. We just want a bigger sound that's more substantial than just the stripped down punk rock sound. Add more to the mix I guess. But that doesn't mean we're ditching our old stuff entirely. Just adding something new to a formula that's already working for us.

GW: Lily huh? I thought so. Anyway glad you're taking the band somewhere new. You were working your solo project's next album when I came weren't you? What's the deal with it so far and what can we expect?

Johnny: Yeah we've been hiding out working on the new album which is undergoing a title change along with some musical changes as well. We're going to be focusing on mostly electric/acoustic blues and country music. Mixing it with some traditional folk instruments like banjo and mandolin. Bringing in Joe's wife to do some backing vocals on a track and just really make another great rootsy type album. I've been having a lot of fun working on it and trekking around the woods in my back yard during the down time. Everything's been going well.

GW: Your Grandad's working on a new album with you as well right?

Johnny: That's been under wraps but yes we have. He's been sick though and we hope it's not too serious. Doctor's say he could have throat cancer. So we're hoping and praying that everything's good right now. But we have recorded a few songs for another album that he'd been wanting to do. Stepping in the studio with him is always a joy and more fun than anything else.

GW: So needless to say you've been busy but just enjoying your down time after that little surprise performance.

Johnny: Pretty much. It was a way of letting all the fans know that we weren't disappearing off the map. The way we did it was enjoyable as well and as I said the response was absolutely fucking incredible. We weren't expecting the roof to blow off the place but man did it ever! It's that kind of thing that makes you enjoy what you do and keep playing music. But I've been enjoying my time off and recording. In the mean time I plan to play around the tri-state area for a few small acoustical dates to keep the engines running for the live show. Because if you don't play live enough you kind of forget how it feels. You never want to stay stagnant on the live touring end of it all.

GW: That makes pretty good sense really when you put it all together that way. Your surprise appearance at the end of TA was very incredible as well. You busted out some new stuff and some old stuff that just sounded great all around. Besides yourself and recording have you been keeping up with anybody else lately?

Johnny: Yeah, naturally I keep an eye on Erich Hess and his gang of friendly misfits. I also enjoy Ellie-Grace Summers, Julia Volkova, Radio Vine of whom I send out my most heartfelt of feelings too for what she's going through currently, Jason Smith, Misery Loves Company, The Devil You Know, Abie Lena, and I've just started getting into Riot! In The Boulevard. Not sure how I missed them but they blew me away at the Field Trip Fest. I love musicians with fire and energy. Amy Meyer has that in bunches and to see her go off like a fire cracker on stage is something excellent to see. I've performed with Erich at least but I'd love to perform with the rest of the artists eventually. I respect all of them.

GW: So we can expect some slight touring and a new album coming out in the near future?

Johnny: Most definitely. It's going to be a good one and I put a lot of work into it. I also can't wait to get out there on the road for a little bit either. I enjoy playing small clubs for acoustical gigs because they're just more fun and you can connect with the audience more. So I'll see you and everybody else when I get out there! Keep an eye out for my new album. Also I thank everybody that gave us a great reaction at Total Annihlation! It was one of the highlights of the band's career and mine.

GW: Thanks man. I always love coming out here to get away and interview you. It's always a pleasure.

Johnny: No problem my friend.

After the interview with Johnny he and I shared a joint then bullshitted about some things that will stay off the record for this interview. I took a hike with him through the forest trails behind his home then spent an evening with him and his band jamming in the studio having a great time with him as always. I took the long trip home feeling pretty satisfied with my visit as usual. Knowing that Johnny was obviously gearing up for another damn good album and was sure he'd put on another great series of shows when he went out on the road. The unique talent that this man possesses as a musician, song writer, and story teller never ceases to amaze me. I feel this is still just the beginning of a great career that he's going to have.

Johnny posts up in his studio blog about what he's been up to lately regarding the new album with his solo project, it's single release, and where it all came from.

I've been sitting behind my laptop for the past few hours trying to figure where to start from. After I hit TA with the boys I took a little pilgrimage down south to find myself. The solo album had taken a stall and we had completely scrapped everything we had worked on because it just wasn't coming together. The stress of knowing my Grandad was getting sick was getting to me. Where I found myself was in the heart of the Mississippi Delta in Clarksdale which was one of Robert Johnson's haunts and presumed where had soul his mortal soul to the devil. I rented a room above the Ground Zero Blues Club which is the blues club owned my Morgan Freeman. I spent nearly 6 weeks and spent time listening, hearing stories, and hearing the some of the best music from old men who will never see fame but go down being remembered as legends in their own time. I talked to men that had claimed to know Son House, Buddy Guy, and Muddy Waters. It's one of those real reverent moments that I have with my Grandad where you sit down, shut your mouth, and listen. Opening your mouth in one of those moments where these old men in there 70s, 80s, and some how made it to 90 and onward where playing the most pure music racked with emotion that you were made to listen. That's where it all started and I went home after I had my eureka moment then laid everything out on the table for the guys to gander at. Though it isn't strictly a blues album it is sort of the main theme of the album. Though I think this is the most musically ambitious album I've ever done without being behind TMK.

I've quit smoking as well. So it's done wonders for my vocal chords I'm able to change pitch and sound of my voice a bit to get a bit more of a higher squeak out of it when I choose to hold it that way for the duration of song. I'm not Jason Smith high but it's high enough for me of course. Though I may able to keep my low smokey rasp if I keep with my regiment of marijuana smoking. I'll be eventually taking myself along for the ride for the new Carnival of Sounds Tour throwing in a few of those dates for my own tour. Along with that I'm also announcing that I'm putting myself on the market finally for a record company. We all discussed it and figured it was long overdue. Though I'm not closing my studio and keeping it independent. I've also been asked to be in a movie with a small supporting part of an ex-junkie musician that runs a pet shop. I'll keep you posted on that. But I like being in movies. Anyway I'm releasing the new single which will bare the same title as the upcoming album. I'm very proud of the single. It was a song my Grandad wrote that I had another brainstorming moment on and with the gus behind me in Southland I was able to put a beautiful twist on it.

erich: always good to hear from this dapper chap. if anyone can wrest the blues from musical elite types and return it to the hands to which it belongs,it's johnny. i tried selling my soul for musical talent, but the devil didnt want to pay for what he was going to get anyway. he was a good guy and appreciated the humor of the situation. so he let me join hell's frequent sinner program. upon my death,i'll have my own victorian style mansion in flaming acres. only the most favored of damned souls get to live there. most importantly,i'll have a properly working tv. you see in hell,EVERY tv show and film has been reshot to star nicolas cage.....unless you are living in flaming acres. so "citizen kane" starring nicolas cage will never be seen by me!

karoliena: you got me into flaming acres, right?

erich: ma'am,i have but one soul....but i'll put in a good word for you.

karoliena: gee, thanks.it is the very least you could do.after all,i am carrying your non existant unborn child!
