I found it really hard to get into The Pacific. The characters just weren't as interesting to me, there was no Bill Guarnere, or Bull Randleman. The episode of BoB where Bull got cut off from the rest of Easy Company during Market Garden was maybe my favourite.

i found the Pacific more real and less one sided than Band of Brothers, and i did find the characters just as interesting and engaging... Especially when you think of the hell they went through in guotocanal (sp?)

best BoB episode for me is probably Bastogne

I clearly need to give The Pacific another go. If I ever see the DVDs on sale I'll pick them up.

I know no where near as much about the Pacific war as I do about the European conflict. I'd actually quite like to see a Band of Brothers type program made but from a Russian perspective, because the USSR's contribution to the whole war effort is often overlooked. But I get the feeling that the number of people who died would be so damn high it would be nearly impossible to grow attached to any characters.

i think the very start of enemy at the gates sums up the casualty's the Russians suffered... one rifle for every five men.... christ.

but yes, i'm sick of how Americans think they won the second world war, when it was the Russians who made the greatest impact on the war...
Have you seen the film the way back? fantastic film about a group of people escaping from a siberian gulag and walking to India and freedom!

I preferred Band of Brothers. I just connected more with the characters and got engaged by their stories more. Personal favorite being the episode with the Doc, thought it was excellent.

I own both on box set, and really enjoyed The Pacific too. It had more action and shooting, but wasn't as engaging. Both were fantastic.

I remember a trailer for that & thinking I'd love to see it but then totally forgetting about it until just now! I'll need to keep an eye out for it, the concept is fascinating.

great concept, shite film... apart from the opening scene, and some of the open shots of the ruins... Ed harris is ok in it though..



edit - just realised your on about the way back and not enemy at the gates...

the way back is a fantastic film, that does sum up the human spirit and desire for freedom..

I just got done watching Source Code, the 2nd film made by Duncan Jones (who directed Moon, one of the best films of the last 5 years, I'm a total evangelist for it). So Jake Gyllenhall is an air force captain who wakes up on a train one day talking to a girl he doesn't recognise who thinks he's someone else, not knowing how he got there. He goes to the bathroom, looks in the mirror, discovers his face isn't his own. He talks to this girl, trying to explain who he is, & boom, the train blows up, & he's inside some pod where he finds out he's part of an Air Force program where he has to discover the identity of the man responsible for the bomb.

That's about all I can say of the plot without going into spoiler territory, but it's a really interesting concept. Just like Moon Jones takes a really interesting sci-fi concept & adds real heart & soul to it all. Great performances, a really interesting story & concept (all was important in a sci-fi flick), this is really worth a watch. It's got the fantastic concept, but at it's heart it's just an interesting fun action film, so I think it's maybe a bit below Moon, which was emotionally very powerful in my eyes.

Told you Source Code was awesome.

I'm currently watching through Twin Peaks, which is probably the weirdest show that ever got put on television. There's a woman with an all-seeing log, there's a crazy doctor who wears 3D glasses, there's a very attractive young lady who's got a crush on the show's main character, a ridiculously-upbeat FBI detective who seeks clues in dreams and visions.

Also, it's set in the Pacific Northwest, an area I intend to visit shortly.

Also, the soundtrack consists of about four musical cues, repeating over and over and over to the point that it's almost funny.

Also, turns out that Deadly Premonition borrows so much from Twin Peaks that watching Twin Peaks repeatedly reminds me think of the Giant Bomb endurance run of that terrible terrible game.

Twin Peaks was genious... david lynch at his best i think.

Made a habit to skip Lynch after Inland Empire and Eraserhead.

Robot Chicken - The 100th Episode is a really nice nod to the show's entire run.

Haven't seen Source Code because I was really disappointed that the epilogue for Jones' original film (Moon) got canned. It was called Mute and it was going to be a futuristic detective's tale which I'm sure I would've enjoyed.

Twin Peaks is really nice though, but Pushing Daisies has taken its spot for me. Saw it like 3 years back and I was really enarmored by how quickly the Pilot made me love and like every character that was brought up. Jim Dale's blissful narration, the kiss between the plastic with protagonist (a necromancer whose first touch brings the dead back to life and his second touch takes them back to the world of the dead, forever) and his child-hood love (who the protagonist ends up bringing back to life with a gang of the best supporting characters ever).

This all reminds me of the Frighteners, my favorite Peter Jackson film.

Last but not least, I've been watching the Walking Dead which is finally kicking it up and Rick is starting to act like he should. Like a fucking badass.

Yeah, but I feel like Mute should be more of a film than a Graphic-Novel. I love Graphic Novels as much as the next guy but my favorite moments of Moon were the moments of silence, where the atmosphere took over, and I don't think that can be conveyed properly over into Graphic Novel form. I'm sure Source Code is good though.

I'm very glad that after its extended hiatus, Mad Men, will be returning next week. It's very rare that a show continues to get even better with each passing season, yet in my opinion, Mad Men has done just that. Season 4 was just spectacular. By far, my favorite season yet.
