Julia was a singer in the multi-platinum electronic band ElectroDeath, where she spent twelve years releasing four records and selling over 35 million copies worldwide. After some internal fights due to creative conflicts in ElectroDeath, Julia decided to leave the band alleging that she no longer had anything to add for the band’s future music, so she was quitting it for a good cause. She finished the worldwide tour ‘WICCA’ responsible to promote ElectroDeath’s album ‘The Sun Will Rise’ and signed a deal with ‘Angel Music Records’. The album will receive a special deluxe edition, with three more tracks then the usual twelve. This edition will be released with a special DVD, where Julia recorded an interview speaking about each song on the album and its meaning. Background and Production Julia began working on the album while she was recording ElectroDeath’s album ‘The Sun Will Rise’, back at that time, several songs she had written for ElectroDeath was declined by her band mates and manager due to them being differently from the main theme choose for ‘The Sun Will Rise’. But instead of leaving those songs behind, Julia was encourage by her longtime producer partner Danja to record them and maybe use them for a solo project, that’s when all the speculations of Julia’s solo career began, but in the beginning everything was denied by the band and their manager, now revealed that it was denied due to promotion conflicts that a declaration of that would make for the release of ElectroDeath’s album. Julia passed the entire ’WICCA’ tour writing and producing her solo project secretly, she even rented separated hotel rooms, so she could place all her stuff for recording the demos and working on the album, this was reported by the media in that time, but it was interpreted as a fight the girls had, something denied after Julia kept performing on the tour till it ends in December. In January Julia had around 20 demos of songs that she recorded and instead of looking for a label to enter the studio she decided to defray the recording sections for the album herself so she could just search for a label to promote and distribute the album when it was already finished. She recorded the entire album on Sound Recording Studios in New York, with a bunch of new musicians she contracted to become her support band, but without any producer once she produced the entire album herself. From the 20 demos she had, She finished the recording sections with fifteen songs. On January, Julia released independently her very first single. The song ‘Sweet Decline’ was the main reasons that lead Julia to sign a deal with ‘Angel Music Records’ due to its strong impact on mainstream radios and digital sales. Its accompanying music video was shot on Paramount Studios topped the Music Box top ten countdown and well reached the third position on digital video sales. After Julia had signed a deal with ‘Angel Music Records’, they spread the promotion of her then independent single, making it top the Digital Chart and also reach the number two on the airplay charts. Julia revealed the name and cover of her album on February exclusive for Culture Uncut, and weeks after this, the website leaked online the supposed track listening of the album. Lyrics and Themes Julia showed a brief of three songs presented in the album in a short appearance she made on Ryan Secrets Radio show. All the songs are about relationship between humans, but not only as lovers but also as parents or friends. The main theme of the album is a self-knowledge of Julia’s own feeling, such as hate or love and also the way she connect with people around her. Tracks about love relationship like ‘Sweet Decline’, ‘As I used to’ or ‘Guilty on me’ can be related to the troubled Julia’s personal life, who has had several affairs with famous musicians like Katie Coyle, back the time Katie was heavily criticized about having two girlfriends at the same time. Other themes on the album are bias, self-help and death. All of the songs are basically pop rock songs influenced, with some electronic effects but everything was done to praise the amazing vocal ability of Julia, which was disguised while she was singing on ElectroDeath. Julia Volkova comments ‘This is the work of my life, well at least the work of my life right now! I never felt so freely before, everything was done because I wanted that to be done, there weren’t anyone telling me how to make my music, or saying what was plausible and what was useless. I don’t want to get in of what happens with ElectroDeath, I just want to let this album makes you all think why I quit ElectroDeath, here are all the answers you want to know. It doesn’t took me so much time to write or to produce it, because every song came so naturally and spontaneous to me, I was not obeyed to go on a studio and make up music from nothing, everything just came from inside my heart. As she starts to sing the song first strophe the song goes growing with a classical violin melody plus some low percussion giving the song a more dying feeling then when it first started. As the second strophe starts the song grows a bit more, with electric guitars and a very soft drum sequence, Julia sings this strophe with additional backing vocals recorded by her. The song goes growing as the melody keeps becoming more rock and faster too. The third strophe is the climax of the song, now we have the drums, the guitar, the piano and everything that has been added to the song’s melody from the beginning of the song. Before the last phrases of the song, al melodies stop and the song comes back to that simple piano melody of the beginning, Julia ends up singing the last phrases and the song comes back with all its full melodies ending it some seconds after Julia’s singing. Lyrics are about a relationship where Julia is facing the fact that she was never loved by the person she thought that loved her and also she is saying to her love interest that while she realizes it. It is written in a straight perspective, where a man is singing to his girlfriend. Julia's Comment: I wrote this song from the perspective of a girl who passed a long time trying to make her boyfriend loves her. People might think that only because I am lesbian I would only think about homosexual relationships, and they’re totally wrong! Once I felt in love for a man, and I felt that I would get married and be with him forever, I was a fool, of course, but I tried it. Sweet Decline is for all those people out there that ever felt hopeless in a relationship. When you look in the eyes of someone and you can clearly see that you are not loved by him. This can be really hurting and devastating. There’s a guitar riff plus a harmonica sound that goes although the song, also the drums are influenced by rock pop songs making the sound more upbeat and commercial then the others instruments played on the song. There’s a mess confusion of sound sin this song, nothing is really regular of follows a direction, and this is due to the grunge influence from the 90s. Julia is singing with so much anger what makes her voice really loud and sometimes gets her out of the tune, but also this makes the song what it really is a fury anthem of someone who really can put you under a heavy stress. The song has bridge moment where Julia mix her voice with several other backing vocals styles, giving another pop feel compared to the rest of the song. Another thing that is clearly perceived is the harmonica plus the electric guitar which compounds the main riff of the song, and this riff is pretty catchy despite it being loud and hard rock stylized. Another cool perceived thing on Julia’s voice is the ironic and angry intonation, Julia is really angry while she was singing this song. Julia’s Comments: I was going through so much artificial things back in the time I was recording with ElectroDeath. People were telling me what to do, how to do and more stupid then everything, they were telling me that I was totally wrong of doing that way, that I was becoming an old singer. You know I’m not the crying person, I don’t cling to emotional tearful moments, I deal with struggle with all my anger and strength. Really I felt like punching someone that time, if you look up for the song I made with Buzz & Hype for ElectroDeath last album ‘Uncontrollably’ you’ll see what I’m talking about. Just to fit in something I had to fake a disguise, to become someone I was not just to make someone else happy. This got on my nerves. And This song is for everyone that tries to say what you have to think, for everyone that thinks who knows you and keep telling you wrong. Screw them! It is a fun spirit melody and so does the lyrics. There’s not much of complex on its structure, it can be compared to rock pop songs, clearly a commercial song. We can hear Julia’s voice so clean and thin, like we never did before, also she is singing with more confidence and attitude, something that all rock singers must have. The song has a bridge in the middle where it comes back to the first slow down melody to rise again to the fast rock chorus. Also in the end of the song there’s a break melody which goes with Julia performing free style vocal sounds, showing how potent and beautiful her skills are. The last lines of the song are spelled by Julia in a smooth and clean tone, ending the song. Overall it’s a good track, very easy to become a hit, dues to its energetic and dynamic sound. Themes of this song is very generic, it can be related to all kinds of relationship, but in the departure view. Julia’s Comments: When you want to get off of a situation that leads you attached to someone, but it’s hard for you because you keep thinking in that person no matter where you are. This song is about stop thinking literally, just like its first lines, it’s about not thinking amore, getting over that person and feeling good about it, maybe deep inside your heart, there’s still a vestige of that feeling, but you know you already moved on. I felt this way some time ago about someone I really loved, and it was so hard for me to forget her, but I think I finally got over that feeling. This one starts with an acoustic guitar that goes although the song, this is softer song compared to what we listen up until now in this album. There’s also the addition of drums, bass and electric guitar especially on the pre-chorus and on the chorus of the song, where the song has its climax. The song goes with a straight structure that starts in the first strophes and goes till the song bridge where the drums gets heavier and the guitars are played in a different form than what they have been played so far. But in the end the song is another soft rock song, Julia doesn’t challenge so much her voice like she did in the first three songs of the album, and this is the main difference of this track. The chorus sounds a bit repetitive due to its lines and structure, the song ends with a brief break melody moment, and the sound of the bass in the end. This song is about saying goodbye to your lover, because you don’t want him anymore. Julia’s Comments: This one, I wrote in the final stages of the album. Like there are so many sad and depressive songs in the album, because they come from a hard moment of my life, which was last year, but I did not feel that way anymore, so it’s important for me to start the album with confidence and strength. Now I’m feeling soft and clean and finally over all the things that pushed me down in a certain moment. This song obviously is about another relationship, but if you look in the underlines of it, you can relate it to anything you got over on your life and I also think that this is probably the strongest song in the album, because you’re totally over, you’re in the control and you are saying that you don’t want that anymore. If we all could just say that when we need to say but we can’t, I’m sure there would not be so many people suffering out there, at least on love things. The song starts subtle and simple, with Julia’s clean voice followed by an acoustic guitar that is completed by some electric guitar chords. The first strophe goes quietly and calm down even when Julia reach the first chorus of the song, where only an electric guitar riff is added to increase the song, but everything seems to be produced around Julia’s amazing vocal ability. The second strophe of the song follows the same structure of the first one plus backing vocals, performed by Julia herself too. In the second chorus the song gets bigger, there’s the addition of drums and the free style vocal performance by Julia, where she reaches the higher notes of the entire album so far. The song breaks down again to that slow and calm melody of its beginning so Julia can introduce the bridge lines of the song, where she anticipates the final chorus of the song, this last one sung by Julia with all her strength. This song can clearly be a challenge for Julia to sing alive, but it also can be really beautiful. So far all songs in the album are being really intuitive and fun spirit. This is not a fun spirit song. Here the album starts to get dark and sad. The lyrics can really make you think the fact of your sad love moment, but the melody is heartbreaking. In this song we can listen an influence of Riot in the Boulevard sound. Julia’s Comments: I think this is the start of the sad songs in the album. The lyrics are not so sad at all, but you know I wrote this one a long time ago, crying, feeling lonely and totally broken. I never was an introspective person but somehow someone made me that way, because of the consequences or because I didn’t want to feel sad again. When you feel that something hurt you, you don’t want to feel that way ever again so you hide yourself, maybe this way you won’t feel bad. It’s complicated, but it’s a beautiful song in the end, I think it is. Julia sings the first lines of the song with a special effect on her voice, one heard on old songs, everything just to put the listener in the mood of an old fashion song. The song has this simple structures that starts out in the beginning of the music, there’re other variations while the song goes playing, like electronic effects and Julia’s free style singing. But the main melody is there, some moments the song left Julia singing alone without any melody, something to introduce another strophe. The song has no chorus at all, all strophes could sound like the chorus of the song, and also it’s a short song. Lyrics are about losing the love of your life and realizing that in the most depress moments of your life. It’s a sad song, and different from others there’s no perspective of a new change. Julia’s Comments: Not everyday you feel strong, there’re those days where you just want to feel sad, where you just want to connect with your deepest hurt feelings, I was feeling that way. This song came to me very simple and easy, It was me an acoustic guitar, I had left ElectroDeath and all that sad feeling inside my heart and all my loneliness and everything, I started to write it. It’s a real song for me, everytime I sing it, I feel my own heart beating and it’s probably my favorite song on the album. But I don’t see this song as a single, I don’t know if I’m ready to promote such a personal and vulnerable song like this. Maybe I’m not even singing it in my shows. I performed it on GMA and believe me, I’m not ready to perform it again. Here we have the perfect wedding of Julia’s vocal and the piano’s notes. The song starts with a brief introduction and suddenly Julia leads the song’s tune. It’s another sad song; lyrics are about saying goodbye to love feeling you have to forget to go on with your life. The song has a simple structure and one of the most beautiful choruses of all songs in the album. The piano melody follows Julia’s voice giving her all the responsibility to give the song’s intonation and she does a wonderful job. Julia’s Comments: do you ever feel so hurt and so divested that in the end you just didn’t have anything else to feel? This song is about that, and more, you’re already accepting the guilty for whatever the reasons that put you in that situation, because you just feel like you had no choice or direction to go. It might sound a little bit confusing, but I think the lyrics are really clear. The song has a base melody that is composed of acoustic guitar, piano, percussion and backing vocals, the addition of ambient sounds and other instruments comes along the song as Julia goes singing the lines of it. There’s a strong backing vocal help on Julia’s main vocal, these backing vocals makes the song sounds a bit more happy then others songs we’re listening till now. This also can be a break of all that heartbreak lyrics that the album has in previous songs. In the end of the song there’s a special instrumentation break, where creepy and spook sounds are added to the song base melody, and also ambient sounds such as wind and people’s laugh, changing the good vibe the song started to a creepier one, but it is still beautiful maybe because of the piano and the drums. Lyrics are about being happy because you are in love. Julia’s Comments: I’m not only made of sad songs, after this track you’ll receive a more hope feeling while listening my songs, I decided one day I would not write another broke up song, and I did it. This is a beautiful love story my mom and dad has since their marriage. It’s been 25 years now and they’ve been together, they passed through so many things and they’re still together and they love each other, it’s so beautiful nowadays to see a couple like them. I wish one day I’ll find someone I can love too, so this song would sound more real to me than it sounds now. The song has no drums at all, as Julia goes singing it the only thing added to its sound it’s some acoustic guitar riffs and more piano and more violin. Julia sings this song very high almost like she was whispering so the song could really be a lullaby. The song is not sad at all, it has a hope feeling that we all can relate, maybe because its lyrics which is about helping a friend or maybe someone you really love pass through a dark time. The song shows another amazing vocal performance by Julia, once again she has the responsibility to lead the songs melody, and she does a wonderful job. Julia’s Comments: It’s curious, the story behind this song. The person who’s singing it, I mean the lyrics were written by me, but also for me. I was really sad and didn’t know what to do last year, and my best friend came to pay a visit for me in the end of ElectroDeath’s tour, she said some of the most beautiful words I have ever listen to. The song also has a pop rock base, with drums electric guitar, bass and acoustic guitar as well, but that Indian instrumentations is also there, it’s a very unique song in the album compared to others, the lyrics are really inspiring talking about fate and the fact that we all have the control of our own fates, and we have the obligation to make it beautiful and good for us. The song is a perfect choice for a single, maybe it’s more alternative than other tracks but still fun and good to hear. The song has two melody breaks which by the way have the same melodies and are heavy influenced by Indian melodies which gives the song a magical feeling connected with its lyrics. Julia's Comments: I think we all have spiritual sides, I have mine too. And this song is about that, I think your spirit is where you put your fate, you have the control of your choices or at least you should have! When I feel lost and misunderstood I cling to this Indian spiritual connection I had for such a long time. It’s good and I feel powerful again. I like this song. Maybe that’s the reason this is the last song on the album. There’s not much rhyming on the lyrics ore beautiful difficult words like we saw on previous songs in the album, this is more of a nude song, where Julia is just saying and singing and feeling and transmitting her real feelings to us. The song structures goes with this acoustic guitar although the song, there’s a drum sequence that it’s added to the song when it enters its first pre-chorus and also the song gets bigger on its chorus, because there’s backing vocals and a more fast and desperate vocal performance by Julia. There’s also piano and some electronic elements on the song, maybe the producer which was not Julia, and by the way it’s the only song in the album which Julia didn’t produced, wanted to make it more of a pop rock song, so Julia could release this as a single too. Well the lyrics and the intensity that Julia put on her vocals makes the song a worth song and a very acceptable one too. Lyrics are clearly about Julia and her own struggles when dealing with relationships or personal issues. Julia’s Comments: This is a very intense song for me. I asked Danja to produce it, because I just couldn’t stand this song as it was when it was a demo. I wrote it entire in the piano, just by myself, saying what I had inside my heart that certain time, and when Danja transformed that darkl and slow song into this strong tune I felt so lucky to have him as a friend. It’s a beautiful song, too intense for me as it describes me so real, but a very beautiful one. Despite the rock and roll sound, here we have a ambient electronic track. This song is from the time where Julia was still making music for ElectroDeath, and just like ElectroDeath’s last album it has lots to electronic percussion and ambient sounds, Julia is singing without effects on her voice, but she is heavily supported by backing vocals, the song is also sad and hopeless and lyrics are about death. Julia’s Comments: This was the last song I wrote for ElectroDeath, when we were producing ‘The Sun Will Rise’ I wrote this song, I knew this would be a dark song to put in that album which was all ‘good vibration’ that time, so I kept this with me, it is perfect here as a bonus track, my last goodbye to ElectroDeath’s sound.
